Bates Award of Excellence in Student Teaching

Teaching is a complex endeavour that requires years of practical and applied experiences, which is why it is impressive that Angela Yedersberger developed many of the characteristics of a Master Teacher during her internship. Angela taught 8 weeks with full time responsibilities and handled herself like a seasoned veteran. Angela is an extremely worthy candidate for the Bates Award of Excellence in Student Teaching. Angela demonstrated excellence in all areas of her internship. She was enthusiastic about teaching her subject matter (regardless of grade or content) and her students. Her passion for teaching was obvious to the students and staff of Clavet Composite School. Angela took great interest in the students as individuals. Ms. Yedersberger demonstrated this by arriving early to school and chatting with students before class, during breaks, and after school. Along with her teaching responsibilities, Angela coached a Jr. Girls volleyball team throughout September and October. Ms. Yedersberger developed a positive rapport with the students which carried over into the classroom. Students were excited to try new things while under Angelas care and responded enthusiastically to her lessons. Angela made learning fun by adding interesting and practical examples; she used a variety of technological mediums in her lessons that grabbed the attention of her students. Ms. Yedersberger encouraged her students to do their personal best and developed a safe and comfortable environment for all students to learn. Angela motivated students to work productively and assume responsibility for their own learning. As a result, Angela was able to maintain appropriate classroom behaviour without disrupting instruction; a characteristic of a Master Teacher. Angela was sensitive to the students academic and personal welfare. She paid close attention to the behaviour of her students in and out of the classroom and was aware of each students academic performance. Ms. Yedersberger sought out struggling students and invited them for extra tutorial help and encouragement. Angela continually reflected on her practice to determine if there was a more effective way to cover and present the subject matter. She strove to present in an interesting manner so the content remained relevant to her students. Angela is a very personable caring individual. She is bright, knowledgeable, wellorganized, extremely prepared, and incredibly hardworking. As stated above, I believe Angela has the potential to become a Master Teacher. I believe she will continually strive to be the best possible teacher no matter the content, grade level, or class composition. Angela strives for excellence. I highly recommend Angela Yedersberger for the Bates Award of Excellence in Student Teaching and would welcome the chance to provide more information should it be required.
