An overview towards the progress of architecture in Indonesia from the 1990s to the present date.

The gravity upon the matter is indeed a sensitive issue since the 1990s were indeed a though time in Indonesia due to the monetary crisis followed by the May1998 riot. Likewise, from a socio-political point of view, architecture is not a dire subject to be focused on since it is considered to be trivial compared to the propensity towards chaotic legal matters. However, like an infinite force of energy that never ceases to disappear, architecture pertains towards its own existence for its own sake (art for arts sake, lart pour lart - oscar wilde). The longevity of the survival of architecture projected resilience and strength, an embodiment of the structural code. The uprising of conflict about A constant state of retrospective contemplation caused by a reversibility towards backwards regression and forward progression, this is indeed an ambiguous disorder, hence the concentration is laid upon the buildings that emerged during the 90s era instead of focusing on the back and forth projection of architecture in Indonesia. The study upon this topic is focused on the style/archetype of the building followed with the generative process behind it. Hence, a suitable case study that yields to an analysis of the composition. Taken from a neutral point of view, the building that I chose should shine above ephemeral trends, thus showing integrity from the ideals of concept without any influence towards political/economical/commercial sense. Likewise, I find selasar sunaryo art space intriguing since the idea behind it is truly remarkable. The success of its architecture outwit the test of time since the reputation of the building is highly regarded even until the present date due to the dedication of Mr. sunaryo himself to let art co-exist with architecture, hence allowing architecture to grasp a bigger scope where a post-modern value intervenes(form follows fun), associating pluralism with expression to communicate/convey a message. Here, architecture is no longer a machine to live in where any factor outside function is eliminated, in fact, architecture has transformed into a cosmos where the building is an imagery of a being hence serving more than just function since it also has an orientation and outlook. Built during the year of 1998 in Bandung, Selasar Sunaryo Artspace is a public building serving primarily as a Gallery to exhibit the works of contemporary artist in order to sustain the value of art and to educate the public about arts through various interactive programs. Function-wise, the incorporation of structural vision to aid in the deliverance of its function is indeed endearing, allowing subtle sublimation by provoking space to give a sense of presence, hence a projection towards the purpose of the appointed space, shown through the allocation of effective zoning and circulation, a paradigmatic entity consisting of a synergy between the space and the building, in which a harmonious balance between nature and the building is synchronized inside-out, hence experiencing dualism between extroverted and introverted space from any standpoint since both values exist equally.

Mr Sunaryo once stated that The concept of the building is to merge architecture with nature, following the flow of a river, hence a metaphor towards natures mechanism, adopting an empirical experience to be incorporated to the composition, in which the conjunction of spaces between the inside and outside resembles the harmony of natures constructive interverence, superimposed accordingly to attain order and balance. There should be a relationship between the site and the building in order for the whole composition to unite harmoniously.(implementing a design method in the form of a correspondence between the site and the building).
