CHAPTER:1 INTRODUCTION TO TOPIC Whether people live in huge cities or isolated villages, whatever language they speak, they all want to have the best for their children and families and to live in peace and harmony, with economic and physical security, personal dignity and in a supportive community. But too many people are at risk from situations that threaten their capacity to live with a minimum of socio-economic security and human dignity they are vulnerable. Indian Red Cross works together with other National Societies all over the world to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity. The first part of this mission statement, to improve the lives of vulnerable people, captures these objectives while adding a dimension of capacity building, sustainability and dignity. Indian Red Cross works through mobilizing the power of humanity to provide support and solidarity. Indian Red Cross is open to all individuals, who can find in the Red Cross "space" in which to come together to exercise their responsibility to assist others and find solutions to community problems. The mobilization of beneficiaries, volunteers and donors is the manifestation of that responsibility. By working in this way mobilizing the power of humanity the Indian Red Cross empowers people, promotes cooperation and lasting peace. The vision of Indian Red Cross is to become a leading humanitarian organization serving vulnerable people by the end of 2007 To fulfill this vision requires several development activities. Many of them have been identified during the process of developing this National Development Plan. Three strategic directions, four objectives and seventeen actions have been defined. Three cross cutting strategic directions have been considered when developing this National Development Plan. Focus on disaster prone states Focusing on core programs Focus on branch development

SOCIAL AWARENESS ABOUT HUMANITARIAN VALUES work is based on raising the awareness and strengthen the knowledge, understanding and respect of the public authorities and others to the Fundamental Principles, the Emblem and International Humanitarian Law. This is possible with the help of an oraganisation which work on the same namely Indian Red Cross Society. Too many people die as a result of no access to even the most basic health services and elementary health education. Health and community care has become a cornerstone of humanitarian assistance, and accounts for a large part of Red Cross spending. Through these programmes, the Red Cross aims to enable communities to reduce their vulnerability to disease, and prepare for and respond to public health crises. The aim of the topic is to influence the behaviour of the people we work with, through a better understanding of Fundamental Principles and humanitarian values. The three main target groups are those working within Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, public and private authorities and members of the communities where we work. Red Cross promotes the Humanitarian values, which encourage respect for other human beings and a willingness to work together to find solutions to problems. From the seven fundamental principles, the movement aims to influence the behaviour of all the people.

Seven Fundamental Principles of Red Cross 1. Humanity : The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavors, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples. 2. Impartiality : It makes no discrimination as to nationally, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress. 3. Neutrality : In orders to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature. 4. Independence : The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement. 5. Voluntary service : It is voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain. 6. Unity : There can be only one Red Cross Or Red Crescent in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory. 7. Universality : The International Red Cross and Red Crescent.

STRUCTURE

CHAPTER:3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

PRIMARY DATA: There are three methods in which primary data has been collected: y Observation: In such type of method of collecting primary data, information is collected by observing the situations or events existing in the organisations itself. It is not always possible to qualify the data and draw accurate conclusions on the basis of such data. I visited the paalanghar of indian red cross society, Nashik situated in Nashik city itself where children between the age group 00-05 are admitted and taken care of them right from their education to their diet.Amoung those ,there were children who were HIV+ and they were treated well by the members with good concernand without any discrimination. y Questionnaire: In this type ,the researcher prepares a list of questions to study and collect data on personal preferences, social attitudes, opinions, etc. The questinnaire are made to the respondents and they are supposed to furnish the information. we asked different questions to the members, associates, coucellers as well as to the children of that paalanghar about how they feel residing here and about hier education. Questions asked to the members about how the take care specially of HIV+ children and their education is carried out.

y INTERVIEW: Interview method is a powerful technique of collecting data.it is an oral method of communication and obtainig data in field surveys. The data is gathered with the help of discussion with the respodents. It is a direct method of collecting data. We interviewed the parents of the HIV+ children who participated in the councelling sessions as well as we interviewed the counsellers and members who provide information about first aid treatments and vaccination programs. Also we interviewed the children of paalanghar of red cross in nashik about their care taken over there. SECONDARY DATA: The data which is already collected by others can be termed as secondary data .the researcher may make use of such secondary data for conducting researcher eg.reference books, website, any printed material or even unpublished data etc. Interview method is best suitable for this project. we interviewed our guide Major.P.M.Bhagat,secretary of IRCS, Nashik. The Indian Red Cross is a voluntary humanitarian organization having a network of over 700 branches throughout the country, providing relief in times of disasters/emergencies and promotes health & care of the vulnerable people and communities. It is a leading member of the largest independent humanitarian organization in the world, the International Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement. The Mission of the Indian Red Cross is to inspire, encourage and initiate at all times all forms of humanitarian activities so that human suffering can be minimized and even prevented and thus contribute to creating more congenial climate for peace.

Indian Red Cross Society is running youth peer education programme, care and support at Bel-Air hospital in Nasik and a special capsule on stigma and discrimination with the support of German Red Cross in three districts of Maharashtra. The Nashik district branch also conducts interactive sessions for PLHIV with the community people under anti-stigma and discrimination activities. Street plays are organized wherein HIV positive people play the role of negatives and vice-versa. Dandiyas are also organized for bringing laughter and cheer to their lives. Amol Kulkarni, Nashik District Project Co-ordinator, Youth Peer Education Programme, who is the initiator of Jeevanjyoti says, By forming a Self Help Group (SHG), we aim at economic empowerment of PLHIV and helping them in finding better ways of livelihood. With our efforts we have just got trained some of the members in making diyas, sky lamps etc. which they would sell during Diwali period. Thats not all, some are now empowered to provide catering services during our YPEP activities and elsewhere. We are helping them to be selfsustainable. One country that is moving towards requiring first-aid training , where traffic accidents are a leading cause of fatalities: more than 1,600 annually. With the support of national authorities, the Red Cross Society in Nashik is working to expand a programme that has already offered first aid training to more than 3,000 licence applicants. The victory is not without challenges the most immediate one being a lack of mannequins, a costly investment for developing countries. Now that we have the mandate, , the Red Cross Societys acting, we must demonstrate the capacity to deliver.

Key recommendations by Red Cross: Governments should promote compulsory first-aid education in schools or among those applying for driving licences, according to the advocacy report. A similar approach should be taken in the workplace. The report calls for time limits on first-aid certificates that would trigger refresher courses. Protect those who respond. Only eight of the 52 countries surveyed have legislation to protect people providing first aid, yet fear of liability often discourages people from giving first aid. Invest. First-aid training and education is cost effective, it reduces the severity of injuries and the subsequent cost of medical treatment. HIV/AIDS AWARENESS IRCS helps and supports the vulnerable people to handle HIV/AIDS epidemic and respond to public health crisis with particular focus on HIV Aids.
