WRITING A COMMENTARY 1000-2000 WORDS

FOCUS INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH BASE TEXT What the text is and its social context. (What was happening politically/socially /intellectually at the time?) AUDIENCE VOICE Explain why you chose the base text. What attracted you/interested you about the base text. TRANSFORMED TEXT What the new text is (genre) and its social context. What do you want to show happening politically/socially/intellectually at the time you have set the story or what do you want to show about the time (now) that you are writing it in?) Explain why you chose to write the transformed text. Why you were interested in creating the transformed text you have written.

Who the base text is aimed at? What is the intended effect on its target audience? (What does it want the audience to think about, react to, respond to?) Whose voice do we hear in the base text? First person/third person/omniscient narrator/the authors own voice/an invented persona? What is the context for this voice meaning how does it show the character(s) relating to the events around them. What is the intended effect on the relationship with the reader? i.e. as a reader how does it involve us in the story?

Who the transformed text aimed at? What is the intended effect on its target audience? (What does it want the audience to think about, react to, respond to?) What/whose voice have you chosen for your transformed text? What is the context for this voice meaning how does it show the character(s) relating to the events around them. What is the intended effect on the relationship with the reader? i.e. as a reader how does it involve us in the story?

THEN YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON YOUR OWN TEXT FOCUS OF YOUR TRANSFORMATION MORE DETAILS OF YOUR TRANSFORMATION PURPOSE GENRE SPOKEN LANGUAGE/DIALOGU E FEATURES IMAGERY GENDER TALK LANGUAGE CHOICES TRANSFORMED TEXT What genre have you focused on and why? Which character have you focused on and why? What aspect of the story/poem/drama have you focused on and why? Explain how you have changed/developed any aspect of the original story/poem/drama and why. E.g characterisation, plot, etc. Why have you written your piece/ To get a moral across? To entertain? To express strong feelings? To express an intellectual idea? Explain the features of your new genre and how you have had to adapt the base text to fit the new genre. Purpose phatic, expressive, transaction, instructive etc. What kind of imagery have you used? Have you made your men/women talk differently relate it to theories of Eggins and Slade or other gender based theories. Words chosen compare to the original text why chosen? Intended effect. Use literary terminology e.g. simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia etc. Parody? Satire? Descriptive? Sentence types e.g. declarative, exclamatory, imperative, interrogative Simple/complex examples and why used. YOUR NOTES
