Analysis of Ode to the West By Percy Bysshe Shelley

The poem wants the reader to realize the connection of the west wind to the life of poets when you look it in a deeper manner. It gives me the the knowledge that poems give information and experiences in a different manner that it touches your senses. In the ode to the west wind the poet divided it in to five parts that explain 5 different things that is connected to the west wind. Each part of the poem explains different faces of the west wind making it more clear and understandable. Colourful words and the use of iamb make the poem more enjoying and wonderful. As I read the poem I analyse that it is praising the west wind in two different manner both destroyer and preserver of life. Destroyer because it take life and destroy properties while preserver because it gives birth to new life when west wind comes. The poem creates a good understanding of the west wind and the connection of it to the life of the people living where it blew. The poem entails experiences that you can imagine when you read it. It makes the reader feel the destruction made by the west wind which is seen through the

whole poem. Preservation of life is tackled mostly at the end of the poem which make a twist to the idea of the west wind. The poet gives also the characteristics of being courageious in times of disaster which can be seen in part 4 and part 5 that explain that the poet wants him/her to be an instrument that gives alarm to the people when the west wind come. Comparing it to other poem that I read, I mostly understand whole poem because it is briefly discuss inside the classroom. The clarification and definition of unknown terms to me make the poem easy to digest. I easily understand the poem because of the experiences that is familiar to me like the experience of having a strong wind which blew out roofs making infrastructure to crush and kill people, the tremendous dark clouds which are floating in the sky during a bad weather and the huge ocean waves that crashes barriers and make large flood. The poet use simile and metaphor to make the senses of imagination work, in each part a different face of the poem is view making the reader read it to the last word. In my experiences I dont really understand poems easily I used to have a dictionary besides me but in this poem I understand it quickly. In my own analysis the poem is fantastic, I actually realize that it is good to read and read poems. It contribute me some points to love reading poem because of this I will read more poem. I really like the last part of the poem which gives the ending and the conclusion of it. I dont like the part which the poet wants to give up his/her

life in the poem. If I am given a chance to rate the poem In a scale of 10 I will rate it 10 because for me it is perfect. I am glad that I have given a chance to read and analyse this poem it is not waste of time and it is a good past time and a habit.
