Lesson Plan Educ 4414

Title: The Five Senses Book Subject Literacy Time: Fall Strand: JK-SK

Lesson Description The students will draw or write in their book to show that they can demonstrate an understanding of the five senses on each day of the week

Ontario Curricular Overall Expectations 2 demonstrate independence, self-regulation, and a willingness to take responsibility in learning and other activities Ontario Curricular Specific Expectations 1.1 recognize personal interests, strengths, and accomplishments 2.3 demonstrate self-motivation, initiative, and confidence in their approach to learning by completing learning tasks Lesson Goals (clearly identify what students are expected to know and be able to do, in language that students can readily understand )
The students will be able to show what they like in answer to the question, What do you like to (sense)? and record their thoughts in a book that will be finished by the end of the week. Students may choose to write or draw in the book or do both

Success Criteria (teachers will identify

the criteria they will use to assess students learning , as well as what evidence of learning students will provide to demonstrate their knowledge and skills

The students will actively involve themselves in the creation of The Senses Book. Each day of the week, students will draw or write about one of the five senses. At the end of the week, their books will be finished, and will be discussed with the class in a large group setting in a general Q&A. Assessment Assessment Mode: oral/ performance/ written/visual Assessment Strategy: book on the five senses Assessment Tool: visual /observation, checklist Materials Paper, markers, pencil crayons, crayons, pencils Lesson Format What Teachers Do/Say What Students do: Motivational Hook/engagement /introduction (Minds on) Show a completed book by teacher that Q&A models what is expected of the students Carpet rules Go through each page and show what has been recorded by teacher Explain that every day one of the pages will be completed Explain that their names and the front cover are to be completed During /working on it/action ( Hands on) When they are working on their books, Q&A teacher to instruct the students that Carpet rules they are to write one thing that they like to taste (Day 1) after they have written

After: Consolidation ( Reflect and Connect) What are some things that you like to taste? Q&A (solicit several responses) to get the Obey carpet rules students thinking about what they can record in their books Do this for each day of the week/sense Direct students to activity centres only when they have completed the work on their books and returned their books to their bankers boxes Have the stations preset with ink blotters, whiteboards, tracing sets, transportation sheets and allow the lego, train set, overhead, and puzzles to be opened up but not the Imagination Centre as students may still be potentially working there on their books

Educational Assistant Support Needed Differentiated Instruction considerations/accommodations/ assessment Illustrations go with the words in each book.
