SURPRISE! SURPRISE!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

has a business; my concern is if fair for one is fair for all, then why is Keith harassing me even though I am on a commercial piece of property and have been zoned for 20 years to conduct my business? One thing you have to remember, Randy Heckman is the fire chief and Keith Grannis is the assistant fire chief. Keith has sat on the village board in the past and apparently did not have an issue with Randy Heckmans business. Keith has stated that you can only run one business from a piece of property, yet Randy does multiple businesses: snow removal, landscaping, mulch, topsoil, sand, gravel, as well as makes deliveries. My business does all these same things, but I am the one that has been made to change the way I conduct business. I guess Randy thinks it is ethical to give your word and then not keep it, like Keith did in regards to my south parcel. Maybe he feels that makes our supervisor trustworthy and fair. Maybe he thinks selectively enforcing rules on everyone but his friends or granting variances to ex-school teachers is fair and ethical. I strongly disagree. If Randy thinks our township should be proud of a man that has led a board to take our township in this direction, I think Randy is looking out for Randy and future benefits to being in the good old boys club down at the fire barn where Randy, our Supervisor and Zoning Administrator hang out. If Randy would like to discuss this one on one, instead of behind my back, he should stop in and see me face to face. Anything I have to say or have said to people I say to them first instead of gossiping down at the fire barn with the good-ole-boys. JOHn POwEll Reynolds Township

TO THE EDITOR: In the Letter to the Editor written by Randy Heckman, I am not surprised that he stood up for Keith Grannis, they are good friends. They have worked together doing lawn care, snowplowing and landscaping for years. I am writing this letter because Randy brought up Keiths ethics and honesty and the services that he has done for this community. All these services that Keith Grannis does for our community he gets a salary for: school teacher, coach, supervisor, etc. All paid positions that the rest of us in the real world call jobs. As for Keith being fair, ethical, and trustworthy and above reproach, there are many in this community that would disagree. I have to wonder while Keith is living in the township and a board member how he can be so far above reproach. He can go to Randys house, on an agricultural piece of property, in the village of Howard City, that basically has the same ordinances as the township, and in fact, sits in the township, and pick up lawn care equipment and go to job sites in the past for Randy with a clear conscience. Randy is running a commercial business on agricultural property, and has been for years, which is fine by me. However, our supervisor equates that with breaking zoning ordinances and stealing from taxpayers, since he does not pay commercial taxes on that property, this all seems a bit hypocritical to me. It also brings up the question of a conflict of interest. I do not believe that Randys business meets the guidelines of a home based business, according to what I have read. Like I said, I am glad that Randy

hopes of creating the greater possibility of healthier communities. Day of Dance not only increases awareness of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, but inspires immediate action for better health. This program has resulted in thousands of people in our community being exposed to the powerful concept that good health can be just a dance away, said SHGMs Brenda DulaneyConnell, RN, MSN, Spirit of Women Coordinator. Coronary heart disease, which causes heart attacks, is the single leading cause of death for American women AND men. Many believe that cancer is the number one cause of death, but as devastating as a cancer diagnosis might be, this is still not the leading cause of death in our nation. Nearly twice as many women in the US die of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases than from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer. And many of the causes of heart disease are preventable or reversible through healthy lifestyles. Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial and Spirit of Women focus on dance as a means

to take steps for a healthier life because dancing can burn as many calories as swimming, walking, or riding a bite (as many as 200 400 calories per hour). Many health benefits may result from dance if it is done on a regular basis as a form of exercise. Benefits include weight maintenance or weight loss, blood pressure and cholesterol management, increased energy, decreased sadness and depression, increased coordination and muscle strength, and an overall sense of well-being. Day of Dance for Your Health takes place during Heart Health Awareness Month and participants are encouraged to wear red to show their support for womens heart disease awareness. Plan to join Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Newaygo Middle School for Day of Dance 2012. You can pre-register for the event by calling 231.924.1100 or go online at www.spectrumhealth.org/ gerber. Registration will also be available at the door the day of the event. For more information, please call 231.924.7139 to speak with our Day of Dance Coordinator.

America: A Nation In Pain

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
Chances are youre one of the 100 million Americans suffering from body pain. According to recent research, up to 90 percent of pain sufferers dont get the relief theyre looking for with their current pain medication. So next time, rather than reaching for a pill, consider some of these misunderstood or overlooked pain remedies: Physical Therapy: Physical therapy can be an effective way to alleviate all types of musculoskeletal and neuropathic types of pain. A primary goal of physical therapy is to help chronic pain patients become stronger. In addition, physical therapy can teach people how to move safely and functionally in ways that they havent been able to in some timehelping them to avoid injury or reinjury. exercise: A consistent exercise routine can help control pain. Thats the word from Dave endres, a physical therapist and co-founder of SPeAR Physical Therapy in New York City. He says exercising for just 30 minutes a day at least three or four days a week will help with chronic pain management by increasing endurance, muscle strength, joint stability and flexibility in the muscle. Massage Therapy: Massage therapy is an effective part of pain relief and management because it can help reduce inflammation and swelling and soothe stiff, sore muscle, which ultimately relieves pain. Stephanie Smith, Spa Director and licensed massage therapist at the Viana Hotel & Spa on Long Island, says that while physical therapy focuses on strengthening and stretchingsometimes with the use

PAIN: While most Americans still turn to over-the-counter pills to handle pain, other methods of pain relief are growing in popularity.
of mechanical methods, heat, and electric stimulationmassage therapy focuses on the muscles, soft tissue, and softening restricted tissue. Topical Relief: Americans are steadily starting to adopt what the rest of the world had known about for years: topical pain relievers, such as patches and gels, which are safe, effective methods for pain management. Two of the latest developments are the Salonpas Pain Relief Patch and the Salonpas Arthritis Pain Patch. They are the first and only FDA-approved overthe-counter pain relievers approved for sale using the fDAs New Drug Application process. Clinically tested, they relieve mild to moderate pain for sore muscles, backache, sprains and strains, as well as joint and arthritis pain. These Salonpas patches are manufactured using a new ultrathin comfort stretch technology, enabling them to stay in place and provide up to 12 hours of relief. Social Security will never run out, or, why retire, if you like what you do?
By Jeanne L. Jerow, Attorney, Counselor, Mediator Howard City
Question: What will you do when you grow up? Answer: Whatever I want to. At least thats what we all planned to do, if we had any plan at all at the beginning of this lifejourney. If you did put a plan together maybe it was to learn a trade, or to take the risks of business ownership. Maybe you took a certicate program and opened your doors to business, or graduated with a college degree and paid back your community helping people work through their own issues. Maybe you train dogs, or kids, preach, build, landscape, barber whatever it is, you do what you want to, and you earn your living. Are you going to retire? Now youre 55 and your family and friends are asking: when are you going to retire? Stop asking me. Fact is theres no reason at all that you have to retire if you like your work, or your income. If you do, therell be money. If you do retire, dont worry. Social Security provides about 40% of a retirees income. And its not going anywhere. Statistics from the Congressional Budget Ofce, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Social Security Administration are not as gloomy as so many television news programs try to feed us. Fact is there will be Social Security when youre ready to retire, because its an easy problem to x. Here are the facts that matter. There are 54 million people receiving some form of Social Security this year, including 34 million retired workers. And about 78 million baby boomers are turning eligible, 1 turns 65 every 9 seconds. In 2012, Social Security will pay out more than its tax revenue for the rst time since 1983. Note this is not the rst year that Social Security has needed government attention to be self-sustaining. On the current course Social Security benets would continue to be paid for 25 years before cutbacks begin, with 75 cents being paid on the dollar starting in 2037. Thats the problem, the big fear that the newspeople are threatening us with. But that wont happen. Why? Because the Social Security problem is easy to x yes, you heard it here rst. 5 choices. Sure, all the politicians will want to tout the good, the bad and the ugly about every idea another politician has for xing Social Security because she didnt think of it rst, but there are basically ve, and only ve, ways to x it. We could: Raise the earliest age to retire up from 62 maybe to 64. And why not? Were all living so much longer now, and being so much healthier now remember when Grandma die at 68? Not now. Women live to 85, men to 78 on the average. And weve all heard the stories about people who die soon after they retire because they had no purpose in life any more. Facts are people stay healthier if they stay busy. Raise Full Retirement Age up. Currently you can retire at 62, but until full retirement age, which is 65, 66 or 67 depending on when you were born, Social Security holds back $1 for every $2 you earn. After that you get to keep it all. Well, if youre still making money like always, whats the sense in giving you Social Security retirement income at 66 when youre not retired? Change the amount or frequency of cost-of-living increases (COLA), at least temporarily. Increase the amount workers and their employers pay into the system meaning increase the payroll tax. Even a tiny bit more per person especially if its the employers portion and you work for a company thats making good money with your help will make a huge difference Make some adjustments based on your income or wealth. So, for example, we could let Warren Buffet have his wish and not pay him Social Security because he makes way too much money. He thinks its a great idea and so should we.

The 75 year rule. Theres no way we can predict the economy, the stock market, or who will be the next Idol. And every 75 years (think back how much things have changed in every 25 years in history!) we have a whole new world to face. But the Congressional Budget Ofce has posted this: if we only increased the earliest retirement age to 64 and the full retirement age to 69 by year 2025, and reduced the annual cost-of-living increase by 1% now, Social Security would not run out of money for the next 72 years, by which time the baby boomers will no longer be around to plague the system. Lets just do that and stop the quibbling.

Nutrition: A key to health for seniors

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
Many believe that the idea you are what you eat has particular significance for seniors. Thats because following a healthy diet can often lead directly to a better quality of life, including being more alert, having a stronger immune system, more energy, faster recuperation times and the ability to do a better job managing chronic health problems. Its also said that eating well can lead to a more positive outlook and better emotional balance. Plus, it can also help to keep muscles, bones, organs and other body parts stronger over time. comes to getting enough vitamin B and vitamin D. n After age 50, a persons stomach produces less gastric acid, which can make it difficult to absorb vitamin B12, a vitamin needed to help keep blood and nerves vital. In order to get the recommended daily intake (2.4 mcg) of B12, it may be necessary for some to take a supplement. n As people get older, their skin is less efficient when it comes to synthesizing vitamin D, which, together with calcium, can help to protect older adults from osteoporosis, so taking a supplement may be to your benefit. In both cases, as with any vitamin or nutritional supplement, its best to consult your doctor before beginning a supplement program.

Stay Hydrated
Part of a proper diet is making sure you drink enough water. Seniors can be prone to dehydration because their bodies may lose some of their ability to regulate fluid levels and their sense of thirst on a regular basis. Drinking water with meals can help them avoid urinary tract infections, constipation and possibly confusion.

Get an Assessment
Since poor eating habits are a primary concern among the senior population, home health care aides are playing an increasingly important role in providing support for those who might be at risk. In light of this and other issues, Interim HealthCare one of the leaders in the home care industry, providing services to over 50,000 individuals nationwide offers a free independent living assessment for seniors. To learn more or to take the free assessment, you can visit independentlivingassessment. com.

I recently had a colonoscopy and everything was good. Great news since at age 44 I did have precancerous polyps removed from my colon. Presently colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. The large majority of cancers of the colon start as a polyp. A polyp is like those pesky little skin tags that some people get under their arms or around their neck (these on the skin are rarely cancerous). There can be two kinds of polyps in the colon (also called the large bowel or large intestine). One kind is called hyperplastic; the other is adenomatous. The hyperplastic polyps are like the benign skin tags. The adenomatous polyps will become a cancerous growth about 80% of the time. The good news is that this process from polyp to cancer takes a long time, about seven years. So, to prevent colon cancer, everyone should get a colonoscopy somewhere between 40 and 50 years of age. Statistically, colon cancer rarely occurs before age 40. If there is a family history, bowel problems (chronic constipation or diarrhea), bleeding, or a sudden change of bowel habits, the rst colonoscopy should be done in the early forties. If no problem, then one can wait a bit, but have this done at least by age 50. The colonoscopy is simple. The clean out prep with laxatives the day before is the worst part and that really is not that bad. A light anesthetic is given by IV so there is no pain or embarrassment to this procedure. A exible ber optic scope is inserted into the rectum and passed all the way to the junction of the small bowel and large bowel. If there are polyps present, the Doctor (surgeon or gastroenterologist) will remove them at that time and they will be sent in for analysis (biopsy). Follow-up scopes will be scheduled based on the results. Two to ve year for adenomatous (pre-cancerous) polyps and seven to ten years for hyperplastic polyps. Less invasive preventive measures are very helpful to insure that the polyps do not develop in the rst place. Fiber is extremely important in the diet. Both soluble ber from things like apples and oatmeal are important and insoluble ber from vegetables and whole grains provide the rest of the benet. Fiber preserves the bulk or size of the bowel movement to maintain proper muscle effectiveness as things move through the system. It also acts like a mechanical scrubber to keep the walls of the colon healthy. We recommend a colon cleanse every 6 to 12 months to keep the cell membranes of the inside of the colon functioning properly. The herbal cleanse should contain something to remove parasites and a cellular detox. We like the TIAO-HE cleanse by Natures Sunshine. Yeasts are a healthy symbiotic organism (they clean up sugars that were not absorbed by the small bowel) in the digestive tract. But it is only healthy, if yeast stays in balance with the other healthy ora (bacteria) like acidophilus. Out of control yeasts can give off toxic by-products that cause many systemic problems like chronic fatigue. They can also add to the allergy load if one is allergic to molds and fungus. Yeasts are controlled by seeding the bowel with probiotics or good bugs from time to time, especially after antibiotics, steroids, stress, surgery, and Halloween (high sugar diets). Yogurt and supplement probiotics are very important. Do these simple things and keep a healthy colon your whole life. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
