Strand: Strategies, Tools and Resources for Digital Classrooms Research shows that within just five hours the brain remaps itself permanently, differently, more superficially when reading electronic texts than when reading paper text. Online readers skim text, click to links away from the page, and scroll rather than read deeply. When writing notes for a research paper, they struggle with reading complex vocabulary, sentences, structure, and ideas because the brain has learned to gloss over text rather than read it deeply. Fast readers will copy/paste text without understanding or reflection, or in frustration purchase a paper. Expert, fluent readers reflect on the text, incorporate it into their long-term memories, and generate independent thinking. The presentation will discuss current brain research about students online reading and demonstrate how PaperToolsPro, online software slows the reading process to make students reflect on their reading and become expert readers who write plagiarism-free papers. 10:45 am - 11:30 am (Session 2) - Broadway A Authoring Video Comics Jan Cosmos - Viterbo University Strand: Innovative Technologies Teachers and students, express yourself through video comics! 11:45 am- 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 3 Creating Digital Fractured Fairy Tales Patty Tzortzis, Luke Larmee & Gayl Carpenter - Evanston District 65 Strand: Standards-Aligned Lessons and Projects In this session, teachers will learn how they can use iMovie, GarageBand and several web sites to create amazing fractured fairy tales with a digital twist. We will visit some great web sites where students can digiatally create their story, see how we can use a wiki to teach a lesson and put it all into iMovie for our finishing touches. This project was completed last summer and student exemplars will be shared with participants. 11:45 am- 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 4 Extreme Teaching - Scaling Mt. Web 2.0 Alice Hartel - McCormick School & Ami Young St. Dennis School Strand: Strategies, Tools and Resources for Digital Classrooms In Extreme Teching, schools can save thousands of dollars utilizing free Web 2.0 resources to incorporate technology into the classroom. Web 2.0 tools span to assist every content area in the curriculum. With the need for every student to feel connected through technology, Internet based Web 2.0 tools provide that link. Scaling the mountain of available tools can often seem overwhelming. From story starters to classroom book creation to teaching Digital Citizenship through social networking, ideas and examples will be demonstrated to show the simplicity of incorporating these tools. 11:45 am- 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 5 Touch Technology Jill Tarnowski, Laurie Lambie & Amy Wonsil - CCSD 46 Strand: Strategies, Tools and Resources for Digital Classrooms See how elementary students are using iPod touches to improve reading fluency, practice basic skills and share information. 11:45 am- 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 6 Using a Miniature Interactive White Board Cary Weisgram - Chicago Public Schools Strand: Strategies, Tools and Resources for Digital Classrooms Using an interactive whiteboard in a secondary English language arts classroom can be a challenge since it is only actually interactive for one person at a time. With off the shelf parts, including a notebook computer, wii remote controller, pico projector, and light pens, a teacher can provide a shared computer interface to groups of three or five students at a time that is well suited for modeling thinking processes with graphic organizers, text annotation, presentation making, and writing workshops. This cheaper alternative to a full size interactive surface fills the gap between Smart Boards and iPads and with some new business laptops and camcorders featuring built-in projectors, this project aims to give a peek into the future of the ideal one-to-one student school laptop. 11:45 am- 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 7 Tech Tools for the World Language Classroom Julie Jezuit - Lincoln Middle School Strand: Standards-Aligned Lessons and Projects In this session, attendees will learn about technological tools that can be used in the second language classroom to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, along with cultural knowledge while at the same time developing 21st Century Skills. Many of the tools are free or low cost and can be accessed at school or from home. All samples are aligned with the national and state foreign language standards.
11:45 am- 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 8 Danville New Tech: Students Experience with PBL and 1:1 Adam Babcock - Danville New Tech Strand: Standards-Aligned Lessons and Projects Danville New Tech students will facilitate this poster session on what you know and need-to-know about the project-based learning process and share their experiences in a collaborative 1:1 environment. Impact of Free-Range Media on Learning Michelle Luhtala - New Canaan High School, CT Strand: E-Learning and Online Citizenship Many educators are concerned about the impact of filtering on teaching and learning in schools. Internet censorship is most often fueled by fear. Costly litigation, online predators, network security, privacy breeches are commonly cited as justification for aggressive filtering practices. While these concerns are legitimate, they deny students the chance to learn and publish online in a supervised, instructional setting. This is a prerequisite skill for success in todays world, and even more so in tomorrows. In this session, participants will investigate the power of teaching and learning with participatory media, its impact on 21st Century skill building among learners, and how it facilitates assessment. The presenter will feature five lessons, all of which empower 21st century learners.

Using Curriculum Loft Cloud, teachers upload content that is aligned to standards and those resources are made available to students, parents and administrators from any web-enabled device. Curriculum Loft Explore pairs the cloud with 1:1 computing. Student Android devices are managed safely and effectively as all content is driven and stored locally on student tablets all while maintaining teacher control of the content students are capable of accessing. Lastly, Curriculum Loft Analyze is a way for teachers to assign and collect homework, tests, quizzes, and projects. Teachers and administrators can then examine the resulting data from this web-based tool. Now going 1:1 can be done safely, effectively and affordably for your school or district!

Information fluency, knowing how to use and evaluate information on the Internet effectively and appropriately, is critical. High-level, problem-based web investigation and evaluation skills are not generally taught in school. Although many students perceive themselves to be skilled web users (rating themselves as good to advanced on a recent survey), when tested, the average pre-test score among middle and high school students was 45%. Improving students' digital information competencies requires practice. Learn about a project at and related study developing fluency through a series of web-based modules at Northwestern's Center for Talent Development. 3:45 pm- 4:30 pm (Session 6) - Ruby LP to CD to iPod Touch...whats in YOUR music classroom? Amy Becker - The Skokie School Strand: Strategies, Tools and Resources for Digital Classrooms Is the music equipment in your classroom reflective of current technology? Prior to last year, the music teachers in our district were primarily relying upon books, LPs and CDs for reading, listening to and recording music. Some of us had never used an iPod and others of us were using our personal iPods to supplement our school equipment. Come see and hear how using an iPod Touch has enhanced the ways students and teachers experience music education in our K-8 general music classes, instrumental and vocal ensembles. This increasingly popular model of classroom instruction inverts the traditional model in which students "sit and get" information independently outside of class. In a flipped classroom, students learn independently from video-based lessons and do their "homework" in school with the teacher's help. Chris Gales and Jamie Workman, biology teachers, who have flipped their classes, will share their experiences about implementing the flipped model during this session. They will discuss their rationale for flipping the classroom, the nuts and bolts of flipping, and offer an analysis of assessment to demonstrate the efficacy of this model

A variety of activities and successfully-tested strategies, which support best practices in literacy, will be shown. Projects are designed to improve literacy skills, increase background knowledge, provide for differentiation and enhance motivation. Benefits include incorporating community resources as well as connecting the students and their families to the learning environment and the world around them. Some project-based ideas that span content areas as well as writing across the curriculum will be demonstrated. All projects are correlated to WIDA and NETS standards as well as Illinois state goals. One of the greatest gifts we can give students is the skill to learn independently. This landmark teaching methodology employs elements of UDL, Blended Learning, Standards Based Grading and Asynchronous Mastery. This model is being used in classrooms from kindergarten through the college levels and in all subject matters. Flipped classrooms are hubs of learning where teachers interact with every student every day. This facilitates differentiation of learning. Advanced students move ahead and struggling students get the extra help they need. Students spend more time interacting with teachers and the content rather than sitting and getting from the teachers

11:45 am - 12:30 pm (Session 3) - Salon I SPOTLIGHT SESSION KEYNOTE SPEAKER The New Classroom: How Information Technology is Transforming Educational Space William Rankin - Abilene Christian University Strand: Innovative Technologies Our classrooms project a particular set of expectations and behaviors that impact the sort of teaching and learning that takes place within them. The relationship between people and information has shaped these spaces, and they reflect that relationship in some very specific ways. Yet as our relationship with information begins to change, our classrooms need to change, too, encouraging new expectations, built on new perceptions, and stimulating new kinds of activities. In this interactive presentation, you'll discover some of the reasons we've shaped our classrooms as we have, some principles for reimagining and restructuring them, and some ways to envision the future of teaching and learning. 11:45 am - 12:30 pm (Session 3) - Salon II CORPORATE PARTNER Bring Learning to Life with Meaningful Teacher Professional Development Programs Marisa Sergnese Polyvision & CDW-G Strand: Leadership, Management & School Improvement This 75 minute session will provide an overview of the PolyVision professional development courses that focus on developing instructional design methods for educators to master the technology tools they have, enhance curriculum delivery and improve student performance. 11:45 am - 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 6 Social Self-Efficacy in Online Environments Michael Manderino - Northern Illinois University & Gena Khodos University of Illinois Chicago Strand: E-Learning and Online Citizenship This study compared 535 high school students efficacy for engaging in social interactions in virtual environments to their self-efficacy in face-to-face environments, specifically for both academic and non-academic tasks. A comparison of social self-efficacy in face-to-face non-academic environments and social self-efficacy in a virtual non-academic environment suggests that students perceive themselves as more socially efficacious in a virtual environment when performing non-academic tasks. However, no significant difference in efficacy exists when comparing academic tasks in virtual and face-to-face platforms. Given students affinity for engaging in social tasks virtually, and the lack of difference in efficacy when engaging in academic tasks, attention to task design is important when integrating virtual environments for academic pursuits. 11:45 am - 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 7 What to do with Web 2.0 Kirsten Innes - CCSD #46 Strand: Innovative Technologies See how we are integrating Web 2.0 applications into our elementary curriculum. Computers will be available so you can try some of the applications for yourself. 11:45 am - 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 8 PLNs for Emergent K-12 Educators Jay Percell - Illinois State University Strand: Leadership, Management and School Improvement While Personal Learning Networks may be commonplace among veteran, tech-savvy educators, they are foreign to many teacher education candidates preparing to enter the field. Creative project-based learning assignments should be implemented that encourage teacher candidates to develop PLNs even before finishing their coursework. Thus, youthful, exuberant first-year teachers, already technologically-minded, will have the tools and resources that allow technology to impact their future k-12 classrooms from day one. 11:45 am - 1:15 pm (Poster Session 2) - Marsalis 10 Virtual Worlds - Visit the HIVE! Gordon James - Schaumburg High School, Dr. Lilly Lu, Northern Illinois University & NIU Graduate Students Strand: E-Learning and Online Citizenship Join graduate students and staff from Northern Illinois University as they introduce you to the growing world of HIVEs, or highly interactive virtual learning environments. The history of gaming in the classroom, Second Life, and Open Sim are just a few of the topics to be covered. Also included are ideas for developing gaming and learning portfolios as well as innovative ways to share these portfolios through the use of machinimas. 12:45 pm - 1:30 pm (Session 4) - Augusta I/II Mobile Devices in the Classrooms Michael Jones - Bloomington Junior High School Strand: Strategies, Tools and Resources for Digital Classrooms Come explore the world of mobile devices with the Bag Boys.
