Bio-waste in energy and fertiliser out

- recycling energy
The Ecopro plant
converting bio-waste to energy & high-class biosolids
Cambi is a Norwegian
company specialising in
biological waste treatment
We design and build plants for treating biological waste
Every plant we deliver is based on our patented Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP), a highly effcient
and cost effective treatment process.
Cambi plants feed on organic waste, both from households and industry. And our plants are hungry:
High digestion rate and high dry solids improves the digester capacity.
Our projects comprise the whole range from preliminary studies and design to commissioning and start up.
In addition to turnkey plants, we also offer fnanced projects (build, own, operate, transfer - BOOT, etc)
and operation & maintenance contracts.

Bio-waste to energy and high
class biosolids/fertiliser
Cambi provides bio-waste plants,
focused on maximising biogas production
and minimising fnal product mass. Because
waste quality can vary a lot, our systems are
designed to handle most variations.
Our patented process meets all known
environmental requirements, including the
Animal By Products Regulation (ABPR,
1774/2002/EC) category II & III materials.

The Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP)
Cambis patented Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) treats municipal and industrial waste prior to anaerobic
digestion. Most conventional biogas technologies operates with 70C. The Cambi process treats the organic
matter at 165-170C, dissolving it into an easily digestible feed for biogas production by anaerobic digestion,
while destroying any harmful organisms (pathogens).
The THP is highly energy-effcient with low operating costs. It also eliminates odour problems associated
with the treatment of organic materials. The end product (digestate) a pathogen free and pasteurised biosolids
can be applied to land directly, composted or dried.

Signifcantly increased biogas production
All Cambi plants have closed systems to minimize all
potential smell/odour. The biogas can be used to produce
green electricity in turbines/engines, where exhaust heat
is used to provide all or most of the steam needed in the
THP process. The biogas can also be upgraded and used
as renewable vehicle fuel. Higher digestion rate and high
dry solids digestion (10-12% DS feed).
We know biological waste treatment
Cambis THP is designed to handle almost all types of
bio-waste. The process can also treat a wide variety of
biological wastes, including categories II and III animal
by-products. Cambi has already delivered a plant for
household waste and industrial food waste, and have
signed a contract for another one to be completed in 2008,
both located in Norway. The thermal hydrolysis process is
also operating in 11 commercial sludge treatment plants
around the world.
The main advantages of Cambi THP over
conventional anaerobic digestion

Slaughterhouse waste Other biological waste (agriculture)
Final products
Pathogen-free nutritious fertiliser produced from biowaste can be
used as a fertiliser in agriculture, or as an organic soil improver.

Input/material to be treated:
Source separated household waste and sludge from wastewater treatment plants.
Capacity: Designed for 30,000 t/a (can easily be upgraded to 40,000 t/a)
Mass balance:
Input organic waste 30,000 t/a *40,000 t/a
Biogas 18.9 GWh *29.6 GWh
+ Existing landfll biogas 5.7 GWh *5.7 GWh
Electricity production 9.4 GWh *13.8 GWh
Biosolids to agriculture 13,300 t/a *15,400 t/a
* Upgraded version
Manning: 5 persons
Output/energy: Biogas converted to electrical power; THP steam and digester heat.
Location: Verdal, Norway.
Start up: 2008
Project: Lillehammer-GLR (www.glor.no)
Input/material to be treated:
Source separated household waste and food waste from industrial sector.
Capacity: 14,000 t/a
Energy data: For every 1000 kg input, there is approx. 380 kg reject and 150 kg
of digestate. The plant makes about 300 kWh of electricity per 1000 kg
of post-reject waste.
COD conversion 68 % and VS conversion 70%.
Manning: 3 persons
Output/energy: Biogas converted to electrical power, THP steam and digester heat.
