Creativity is: Originality, imagination, inspiration, ingenuity, inventiveness, resourcefulness, creativeness, vision and innovation.

Apply them to coursework descriptions justify how you have demonstrated them how creative do you think youve been? what has prevented you from being more creative? has a set of menu of tasks made it easier to be creative or would you have preferred a free choice on what you could make? Were you pinned down too much by the task or did it free you up to be creative within the boundaries of the task? At AS During the AS coursework I didn't think I was all too creative compared to other pieces of work I had seen by other people in my class. I didn't have Photoshop at home, and I was kind of new to photo editing. The only software I had used before was Picasa, which is a lot more easy to use compared to Photoshop. I was resourceful in the fact I used my friends camera as mine wasnt very good and I mind mapped ideas I could do using any equipment or props I already had. The vision I had was mixed for my magazine as Im pretty picky and I found it hard because I wasnt very good with cameras or Photoshop so I guess that prevented me from being creative. At A2 When creating the A2 coursework, I think the fact we had problems finding people to be in our video because they were all camera shy, or they didn't fit the part or felt comfortable. We had a really bad time finding a drummer and had to kick two people out and move the band positions around. We luckily managed to get a studio through a friend for free. The only problem was that the manager cancelled on us twice and we had to find a slot where people could get the time - this caused us a lot of problems by cutting down our time. We didn't have a big budget, and we didn't have much access to equipment out of school - we didn't have the editing software or decent cameras. On the other hand it's pretty lucky we had the bass, guitar and mic, but we hit another problem when the studio decided we had to take our own drum kit and we didn't have one. We managed to borrow one off of a friend, but he forgot a pretty vital piece which looked a bit strange on the camera. I managed to rip a bit of paper out of my book and used that for a snare. I thought that was fairly creative considering I worked with the basics. It doesn't look like a snare, but at least she wasn't imitating and playing 'air drums'. From a slight angle it also didn't look much different as you couldn't see it too clearly. I thought that this showed creativity and inventiveness using a completely random object to replace the visual of another. I think it also allowed us to take inspiration from the 'cheeky' vibe of the video. When editing the software I had a bit of fun playing around with the visual effects and decided to put in a black and white effect that fades in as soon as the slow verse starts. It was an idea that came whilst we were recording the video for a mickey take of a real pop boy band that had the lighters in the air kind of feel. We weren't exactly original, as you need other ideas to be creating and influencing a new idea. We did use the Sum 41 video to implement into ours as it fit with the meaning of the title 'Fat Lip'. I don't think we were very creative as we 'copied' the video in a sense where we did similar stunts. I think we were creative when we incorporated ideas into our own video and trying them out ourselves. I think that if we had a free choice on what we could do, I would have been stuck wondering what to do as there were many choices. Thinking about it now, I would have loved to do two advertisements in a 50s style for something modern, such as a video game. I think it allowed us to be creative within the boundaries of the task which is something I find easier to work with than given a completely 'free choice'. I think because we have had so many issues, it highlights that we have been inventive when it came towards solutions for these issues.

"A process needed for problem solving...not a special gift enjoyed by a few but a common ability possessed by most people" (Jones 1993) I agree in the fact that it is a common ability, but the level of creativeness varies between people as I think there are different levels of creativeness. Not everyone is the same, so I think that different situations affect creativeness and inspiration. I would agree to an extent that it is needed for problem solving as you need different viewpoints to attack problem from.

"The making of the new and the re arranging of the old" (Bentley 1997) I like this quote a lot because it refers to keeping references and ideas from old media texts and changing them and integrating them with new ideas. It doesn't throw any good ideas away, and the references can take you back to a different year allowing you to see different points of view from people as products of their time. I agree with this quote because this describes postmodernism and creativity within itself. You need to be creative to take what someone else has made and add your own twist to it. "Creativity results from the interaction of a system composed of three elements: a culture that contains symbolic rules, a person who brings novelty into the symbolic domain, and a field of experts who recognise and validate the innovation." (Csikszentmihalyi 1996) Im not so sure about this quote, I dont really understand it. "There is no absolute judgement [on creativity] All judgements are comparisons of one thing with another." (Donald Larning) I believe this quote is true in the sense that there is no true judgment of a creative piece of work, peoples opinions vary which cannot be right or wrong. Although, comparisons are made a lot and the level of creativeness can be seen as long as the work is explained to the person viewing it. "Technology has taken all the creativity out of media production" I dont agree with this at all, this is because a number of creative texts have been made using technology such as photography and a number of videos. Editing is used for creative effects. I think to enhance creativity; you can use any number of tools to produce whatever you want. "A project that is too well planned lacks opportunities for spontaneity and creativity." I also believe this as sometimes good things happen when they arent planned. Instead of stressing everything into place a laid back approach is always good too. Overworking it just doesnt work all the time, and then it looks like some things have been forced too much. It does depend on what it is that youre working on. "Media producers can learn nothing from studying the conventions of old texts" There are constant intertextual references made within films, themes of photo shoots and novels. Producers can learn a lot from studying the conventions of old texts; learn from producers mistakes and methods. "The creation of bringing something new into existence this particular understanding of creativity involves the physical making of something, leading to some form of communication, expression or revelation" (David Gauntlett) I do agree that with creativity it needs all of those things to produce something new. "If creativity is not inherent in human mental powers and is, in fact, social and situational, then technological developments may well be linked to advances in the creativity of individual users" (Banaji, Burn and Buckingham, 2006). Not so sure on this one.

Applying theories to my coursework "The making of the new and the re arranging of the old" (Bentley 1997) As I agree with this quote I can link it to my coursework. I looked at other texts that had already been made and learnt to input ideas from those texts into my own. For my AS coursework I used a number of old rock and metal magazines that I collected from my friends and a number of my own magazines too. For A2, I had a look at Sum 41s video and used that to innovate it within our video. "There is no absolute judgement [on creativity] All judgements are comparisons of one thing with another." (Donald Larning) I do compare my work to other peoples work in my class, unfortunately leading to believe mine wasnt as creative as theirs but I know I usually put myself down a lot so I try to ignore what I think. I dont mind peoples opinions but I do like constructed criticism. We didnt receive much for our work at A2, but I think everyone was a bit too nice we were too! But it wasnt very constructive. For AS I think I was creative with mind mapping ideas, but I didnt portray it in my work as much as I wanted to as it looked fairly boring/plain and not so professional. "Technology has taken all the creativity out of media production" We used a few effects on our video editing software at A2 and they were pretty creative! Especially with the ideas and reasons behind them. I think it would have been good to have used physical materials to construct our AS work, but thats why people take Art. We pretty much purely used technology for our pieces and I believe its not the tools that you use, its just merely how you use them. You can be creative with anything, and I tried my hardest with photos and the materials around me for AS. "Media producers can learn nothing from studying the conventions of old texts" We used a few ideas that were innovated from other texts. For AS I used a number of magazines to take ideas from, and I sometimes cheekily took some ideas from other class members and twisted them to fit my genre. For our A2 work, we used ideas from the video and innovated for ideas to fit them to our own use and budget.

How do Rube Goldbergs ideas fit in with what you have learnt about creativity? He brings a number of objects together to create a kind of domino affect. The first time I watched it was a few years ago, and I thought it was really awesome. It takes a lot of patience and a lot of precision to create something similar to that. To what extent are they demonstrating creativity? which theories could be applied to goldbergs ideas? Explain why which theories conflict explain why

Coursework

Write up a 750 word response outlining the extent to which you were creative in your AS and A2 coursework tasks: During AS I used an SLR camera and Photoshop but I wasnt very used to working with either of these, although if I had more time and planned my work properly, I think I would have been able to enhance the creativity with my work a lot more. Now I have more experience I think I would be able to enhance creativity. It hindered my ideas a lot because I was unsure of how I could do something using the tools and whether it was achievable using those tools. At A2 I found using the video editing software a lot easier because it had a logical layout that I found easier to work with. Using a video camera was fun because theyre more straightforward compared to an SLR camera that has lots of buttons. Because it was easier to use the tools, I think it enhanced the creativity. We wouldnt have been able to use certain effects in our work otherwise. "The making of the new and the re arranging of the old" (Bentley 1997) I think this is a quote that can be applied to my AS and A2 work as I took ideas from different sources that would have been similar to my own work, and used those ideas to innovate into my own work. "Technology has taken all the creativity out of media production" is a quote I think I can challenge because I did use technology, but it is still creative. Personally I think its about how you use tools and not what tools you use when it comes to being creative. At AS I used other metal and rock magazines to influence my ideas on how I should layout my own magazine as it was the same genre. Looking back, it looks nothing like the other magazines but I think that was because I was unsure on what I could do and how to do things using Photoshop. During A2 we used a lot of influences to create our video such as the bands official videos, other videos done by them and videos made by other artists of a similar genre. When it came to music I thought we made a good choice at A2 as it was rock/punk and a lot of people picked alternative/indie. Its a classic song that we know in our generation and it was really popular. The official video was brilliant and it let us take it any way we wanted. With camera work we tried to incorporate ideas with the worms eye view to highlight the band should be looked up to, and we used an old camera and a new camera to juxtapose the quality to show a home video kind of look. We also tried to use typical places we would find teenagers; venues, parks, alleyways etc and because we are of that age, it was easy. When creating the A2 coursework, I think the fact we had problems finding people to be in our video because they were all camera shy, or they didn't fit the part or felt comfortable. We had a really bad time finding a drummer and had to kick two people out and move the band positions around. We luckily managed to get a studio through a friend for free. I wouldnt say we were original at all because we innovated ideas from the official video and we wanted to have a go at making something similar. I think we were original in the sense we had to take what we saw and apply it to the resources we had and could find. I have found a lot of creative skills such as the tools on the software that I could take into future projects.
