Closing message from Mufti Menk

A brief Introduction
The Send A Scarf initiative was thought up as a community project to better the lives of our Sisters in Zimbabwe. After a visit to parts of rural Zimbabwe, it became clear that of the numerous challenges in the area, one which could be solved both immediately and effectively was through clothing. In particular, the fact that so many women currently have to struggle with tattered cloaks & scarves, while we are so fortunate to have more than enough. The idea, was to collect cloaks & scarves in as good condition as possible and then take them to women who would make best use of them. Not only would we be providing a basic essential, such as clothing. But by showing each and everyone of them that someone cares, we are actually sharing our hope and love with others.

End of Campaign Message

ASSALAMO ALAIKUM WARAHMATULAHE WABARAKATU In the name of ALLAH, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Peace & Salutations to our NABI (SAW). We start this report with a lump in our throats. As we come to the end of our campaign, we would like to share some of our feelings and thoughts. The first HADITH that says Definitely actions depend upon our intentions was the originator of our campaign and hence its always been about the drive and not the collectors. We praise and thank the ALMIGHTY ALLAH for having given us this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our Sisters in Zimbabwe. We have grown from learning to use our computers and typing with one finger to responding to emails on our cellphones. We would like to thank each and every one of you for participating in this campaign. Without your contribution, this campaign would never have been a success. This campaign started after EID UL ADHA. Our aim was to provide 1000 cloaks, 1000 scarves and 1000 Burqas for our Sisters. Thus far we have dispatched three consignments. One in December (2011) which has already been distributed. Another around the middle of January (2012) and the third had us dispatch 43 boxes at the beginning of February(2012). We one further consignment of 30 boxes ready for dispatch. Our policy is to wait for one lot to reach and be distributed before we send the next.

We would like to thank the following people for extending themselves to us. Saleem Kajee of Textrim Durban Muhammed Ebrahim of Moosa Sales Room Fordsburg These individuals, have helped us by supplying fabric at below cost, to make new cloaks. Brother Hassan Issac from Jack Ruby Fabrics Durban, for generously donating rolls of fabric for making Abayyas. Alhumdulilah, we managed to make 1214 NEW Abayyas. Sister Elaine (who is Christian) was the seamstress who stitched these Abayyas at a very low cost Mr. Henri Gradwell (a Jewish Gentleman) from Durban, who extended himself in organising the lovely tactile fabric for Burqas. We have thus far only managed to make 500 Burqas due to a shortage of fabric. Therefore, this part of the campaign is not complete and on going. We would like to thank each and every one who volunteered as drop off points. I have to single out two sisters, Raeesah Dhabelia, who is a Matriculant from Lenasia, for having gone the extra mile and ensuring that items from that area were packaged and examined before being dispatched to our Durban Collection Depot. Sister Rookeya Jossab of Trendy Kidz, for allowing herself to be our dumping site and for sorting, washing, ironing, packaging of garments and using her garage as a storage site. Furthermore, we have to thank those who through their acts of kindness, helped harness resources. Starbell Transporters of Durban for Transporting our boxes to Zimbabwe, free of charge. Mufti Menk for tweeting. The gist of it was If you have a garment that you have not used for more than a year, consider donating it to a deserving organisation ffd by www.sendascarf. co.za that made our campaign go from national to international instantly. Apologies to Mufti Menk if my quotation is not correct. Everyone who provided transport to the courier site & the people who provided the packaging. I thank all donations from our international contributors from as far as Mauritius and the United Kingdom that have already arrived.

Due to your generosity, we can proudly say that there are more than 1250 used Abayyas and 2000 scarves on their way to our Sisters in Zimbabwe. Last, but not least, we would like to thank our husbands for being patient and always not so encouraging. Saying we have bitten more than we can chew. Our children who were coerced into grudgingly packing of boxes, labelling and dropping them off. There are many people who may have been omitted to thank, acknowledge or reply to. We humbly apologise for our shortcomings with regards to the above.

Collection Statistics
The Send A Scarf campaign began with humble beginnings back in November 2012. Since then, the momentum generated has been amazing. We have collected a significant of cloaks and scarves from women in South Africa who have become like family. Having set out to collect 1000 cloaks, we are over the moon that we can clothe more than double that number of women in Zimbabwe. This is all down to everyone who has contributed. The work of our Sisters cannot be praised enough. Sisters Moshina & Yasmin decided to add a further contribution by having newly made cloaks commissioned. The most amazing part of this campaign has been the reach of the initiative. We managed to gather collections from all over South Africa. In total the Send A Scarf campaign has collected over 3000 items. Thank you all.

International Reach

he Send A Scarf campaign was started not realising the power of an idea. In fact the concept to collect cloaks and scarves for Sisters in Zimbabwe has been so far reaching, we have collections in place we had never thought would hear about it. The determination of Sisters around the world and the connectivity of new media has meant we have received collections from Malaysia, the UK and even Canada. Had we known this campaign would have an international appeal, we could have planned better. But this experience has taught us all a great deal. Perhaps if there ever is another campaign we will take this into account.

Our Journey and Conclusion

It has been an absolute privilege, honour and an amazing experience writing, learning and working with each and every one of you. This initiative was started with very little expectation, but a belief that there are women out there who care for their fellow Muslims. Over the past few months, we have interacted with so many of you, that we have practically become family. Thank you for joining us on this journey. It has been an experience we will never forget. If we were to take away one lesson from all of this, it would be that as individuals we can shake things up, do our bit and be a force for good. But as a collective, we are powerful enough to force change and make things happen far beyond our expectations, far outreaching what we could achieve alone. The Send A Scarf initiative has provided a platform that is unshakable, resilient and strong. All this comes down to each of you. Thank you for taking the time and showing you care.

The founders of the project, Sister Moshina, Sister Yasmin & Sister Fathima have dedicated selflessly to this project and really do deserve all the accolades & plaudits. They are too humble to share the trials and tribulations they faced but perhaps one day they will. It is no mean feat to have collected and produced so many items of clothing in such a short space of time with little more than an idea, infinite energy and relentless determination. In part it is due to their indefatigable approach together with the sharing of the burden by Sisters across the country and even the globe. You all have contributed to a community that can achieve great things. If at all possible, please remain in contact so as to maintain this network of incredible women. Your efforts mean that in another country, perhaps one you may never visit, there is a woman who is smiling because you took the time to show you care. That smile will resonate across her community. With the child she teaches, the family she looks after and the community she contributes to.

Message from Mufti Menk.

Wa alaykumus salaam. Jazaakumullah for your e-mail in which you have indicated that the campaign has come to an end. It is extremely heart rendering to know that the Sisters have been so forthcoming and that the response to the appeal has been so tremendous. May Allah Almighty grant every single one of them a most complete and deserving reward, in both worlds. Indeed it is also our fervent prayers that The Almighty grant a full reward to every single one of those who played a role in the entire campaign in whichever way they possibly could and did! In the meantime we have been taking every opportunity on our outreach and dawah programmes, to distribute the cloaks and scarves to the Muslim ladies from the rural and high density areas of different parts of the country, and cannot fully describe (in words) the joy, jubilation and elation of the recipients/beneficiaries. Truly

speaking, not only has this campaign provided them with decent attire but also given them a sense of belonging and identity as Muslims! Once again Jazaakumulla Khayran fid daarayn! Salaams and best regards to all

Many of us have excess clothing that we have not made use of in over a year. Consider transforming that into a charity!
