READING Part 1 Read the text below and decide if the statements 6-13 are True (T) or False (F). THE HIGH SCHOOL PROM Having a big party in the junior years of high school called a "prom" is a great American tradition. It's a special night, which people plan very carefully, and remember for the rest of their lives. The high school prom season usually starts in April and continues through May. Planning starts as early as February however, when the magazines and stores begin to show prom fashions. Proms are held in many different places. Some schools still hold their proms in school gymnasiums but this is considered a bit old-fashioned now. Most high schools today have their junior (first year of high school) and senior (last year of high school) proms at a hotel or a country club. Girls spend a lot of time deciding what kind of dress to wear and fashions change from year to year, and from school to school. As the proms are quite traditional occasions, classic clothes are usually a good choice. One of the most important aspects of the prom night is finding a date. It doesn't have to be a regular boyfriend or girlfriend, but you do have to know who your date will be some time in advance of the prom so that you can plan it together. No one wants to go to the prom alone and people get really upset about it if they don't find a date. Boys are expected to buy a "corsage" for their female dates. This is a small flower arrangement which they wear on their wrist. The presentation of the corsage to the girl happens before the prom usually at their parents' house. Sometimes at the prom the students elect a prom king and queen, who are the most popular couple of the year. They are given crowns and lead the dancing when the music starts. 7 Proms are important events in the life of an American graduate. 8 Fashion show is a part of a prom. 9 Holding a prom out of school is a modern tendency. 10 The choice of dress to wear at the prom depends on the school you go to. 11 I Preparations for the prom begin long before the party itself. 12 You must take your boyfriend or girlfriend as a date for the prom. 13 Before going to the party boys usually buy some jewelry for their dates 14 The king or queen is usually invited to the proms.

HOW TO PASS ANY EXAM

If you're like most people, you are afraid of taking exams. There are a lot of reasons why people are afraid of exams. One of them is what your peers and employers are going to say if you don't pass. The real problem isn't taking the exam; it's preparing to pass the exam. I've got a buddy who prepares himself for failure. He doesn't believe it, but it's true. How does he do it? He'll tell himself over and over that he is not good at taking exams. By the time he starts the exam, his brain has been conditioned that it's okay for him to fail because he's not good al taking exams. The moral? Tell yourself that you are good at passing exams. First of all, study every single day at exactly the same time. When I prepare, every day I study at the same time that coincides with the exam start time. One of the most effective tools you can use to learn new material is flashcards. Get yourself five hundred or so three-by-five cards, and write a term on one side and the definition on the other. Gather a maximum of five test-takers who can meet even/ week. Each of you will create and bring 20 exam-like questions that deal with only two to three objectives to each meeting. Revise each of the questions as a group, using any reference to prove or disprove answers. The night before your exam can be a stressful, sleepless night. I recommend that you take a nice, long walk or jog. Exercise can reduce stress and help you sleep. As far as studying goes, I always study my usual amount. When it's exam time, arrive at the testing center early. When you're in the testing room, roll your shoulders, breathe deeply- ease yourself and relax. Hopefully, if you prepared properly, your score will be greater than just the passing score. If it is, celebrate! Reward yourself with something you wouldn't usually do. If you don't pass, don't worry; there is always next time. Try to remember about the exam and the questions that puzzled you the most. Count the exam as part of your studying routine. In fact, reschedule to pass the exam again so you've got another deadline to work toward. 15 Most people are afraid of exams because 16 If you want to pass an exam 17 You should study 18 Effective way of study is a b c a b c a b c a b c they don't prepare for exams. of other people's opinion. they have real problems. believe you are good at doing it. believe your buddy. make you brain work. just a single day. using instruments. every day. revising in group. preparing 20 questions. dealing with objectives.

Module Education I course Achievement Test Part 2 Read the text and questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet. Being an older student At 32, I have just finished my first year at university. As well as attending lectures regularly, I have had to learn to read books quickly and write long essays. I decided to go to university after fourteen years away from the classroom. As a secretary, although I was earning a reasonable amount of money, I was bored doing something where I hardly had to think. I became more and more depressed by the idea that I was stuck in the job. I was jealous of the students at the local university, who looked happy, carefree and full of hope, and part of something that I wanted to explore further. However, now that I've actually become a student I find it hard to mix with younger colleagues. They are always mistaking me for a lecturer and asking me questions I can't answer. I also feel separated from the lecturers because, although we are the same age, I know so much less than them. But I am glad of this opportunity to study because I know you need a qualification to get a rewarding job, which is really important to me. Unlike most eighteen-year-olds, I prefer a weekend with my books to one out partying. Then there are the normal student benefits of long holidays and theatre and cinema discounts. I often have doubts about what I'll do after university, but I hope that continuing my education at this late date has been a wise choice. 15 What is the writer trying to do in the text? A help lecturers understand older students B explain her reasons for returning to study C suggest some good methods for studying D complain about the attitude of young students 16 What can a reader find out about the writer from this text? A when she left school B how long her university course is C where she will work in future D what subject she is studying 17 How did the writer feel about her job as a secretary?
