WORKInG WITH YOUR ADvISOR

The relationship between advisor and advisee is one of shared responsibility. Though you are ultimately responsible for the choices you make in college, the university realizes that you may need the mentoring and advice of academic advisors. Your academic advisor is your primary resource regarding academic issues, opportunities, and programs and could perhaps be thought of as the coordinator of your educational experiences. Advisors can help you fully understand all of your options and avoid needless mistakes, but only if you take the initiative to seek their advice.

Advisor Responsibilities:
1. Clarify university policies, regulations, programs, and procedures 2. Be available to meet with you each semester 3. Offer advice on selecting courses and to assist you in developing an academic plan 4. Be a responsive listener and to refer you to appropriate support services when needed

Student Responsibilities:
1. Take the initiative to contact your advisor 2. Come prepared for meetings 3. Keep your advisor informed of any changes in your progress, schedule, and goals 4. Be familiar with the requirements of your major and schedule classes accordingly 5. Be knowledgeable about policies, requirements, and performance standards

5. Discuss your academic performance and its implications 6. Help you to explore your interests, abilities, and goals and to relate them to academic majors 7. Be knowledgeable about career opportunities 8. Offer you the opportunity to actively participate in the advising relationship

6. Be knowledgeable about prerequisites and discuss course sequencing with your advisor 7. Follow university procedures for enrolling in classes and adjusting your class schedule 8. Observe academic deadlines and make advisement appointments well in advance of those dates 9. Keep a personal record of your academic progress
