Pastoral Corner
rayer, fasting and almsgiving are the three facets that make up the jewel called the Lenten Season. Fr. Richard Rohr says that it should be a season of "wondrous encounters." In the first preface for Lenten masses it is described as "this joyful season." So far it almost sounds like Christmas and in some sense it is. It isn't about external gifts given and received, but about internal gifts and treasures discover deep within ourselves as individuals and as a community of faith. It is time to take stock of our assets and liabilities so we can become a new creation for others. The legs of this journey of discovery are; prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The first leg, prayer, is a journey into solitude and silence. Find a comfortable place away from lots of distractions. Sit comfortably avoiding any painful or distracting pressure points. Gently bow your head and softly close your eyes. Notice your breathing, let your breath be your mantra - move into the silence, try to hear only the silence. Let all distracting thoughts or noises just pass through you - noticing again and again your breathing will help you let go of whatever is distracting you; and continue to move into and around in the silence. You will find that this is a very spacious and peaceful place, a place that will become available to you almost at anytime, anywhere. At first try it for just a few minutes at a time, and build up gradually. This place of quiet and solitude, deep within you, ought to become a place that you visit regularly. This place is good in and of itself, but also as a starting point for any period of prayer. We see Jesus going to this same place often in his ministry; this is where he gained his balance and discovered where he needed to go. he second leg of the journey is fasting. We need to fast from what distracts us. We need to fast from the past, and we need to fast from the future, so we can be truly present to the present moment and what lies right in front of us. It is all about developing awareness to really see and feel what is right in front of us. We need to fast from the past, what could have been or should have been, what people may or may not have done to us. We also need to fast from the future, what might or might not happen, what we may or may not be able to do; all so we can just be aware of the present moment where we can actually do something with what is in front of us. The third leg of the journey is almsgiving, mostly giving of ourselves to what is in front of us. This is the key to the ministry of Jesus. He didn't go out looking for work, the work came to Him. Jesus blessed, embraced, held, listened and shared His life and power with all those He encountered. Jesus was attractive because He was at peace with Himself, because He was truly present to the present moment and discovered His true identity and power. The same is true for us, we too will discover who we really are, what we are capable of and what we are called to do when we are truly present to the present moment and the people and events that are before us. o prayer is more than saying prayers, it is ourselves becoming prayer, becoming what we pray for. Fasting is more than giving up stuff. We need to fast from all that distracts us from the present moment and what we are called to do in the present moment. Almsgiving is more than throwing money at a situation, but asking for the help to do, with the help of our Higher Power, what is in front of us. It is all about awareness and living to the full each moment that is given to us.
