Workshop on Solar

Power Project Development

22nd & 23rd February 2012, Hotel Shangri-La, New Delhi

The Indian Renewable Energy sector is progressing rapidly. Installed grid connected renewable power generation capacity of India has reached 21.12 GW. This is more than 11% of the total installed capacity base of the country. The demand for power has been increasing in India due to the growth in the Countrys economy. Over the last 10 years, energy and peak demand shortage averaged around 10.3% and 12.9% respectively. In meeting this growing demand, renewable energy is playing an ever increasing role. The availability of abundant solar energy has prompted policy makers of the country to frame favourable policies and regulations to develop the solar energy resources. India has today only around 42 grid interactive solar photovoltaic power plants with aggregate capacity of around 143.5 MW, that generate around 240 million units of electricity in a year, in sharp contrast to the estimated potential of 50,000 MW. Most of the existing capacity today is offgrid and for standalone applications in lighting, telecommunication, small power requirements, battery charging, water heating, cooking etc. 2011 has been a remarkable year for the Indian solar industry. The country's huge potential is finally being realised and the industry is rapidly developing and turning India into one of the world's biggest PV markets. In just one year, India's installed capacity has risen from 22 MW to 143 MW and is expected to extend up to 400 MW within next one year. This is only just the beginning. The various bidding rounds issued by the national and regional governments have been met with unprecedented enthusiasm from national and international players. The number of projects is continually growing and India's pipeline is expanding explosively. By 2014, India is expected to have 14.5 GW of installed solar PV capacity. Some experts have predicted that this base will hit 33.4 GW by 2022. Under the JNNSM scheme of MNRE, NVVN Phase I, Batch II bidding results shows that there will be addition of near about 350 MW of Solar PV within next one year if all of the selected projects are executed successfully. The present central and state policies for Solar Energy is developing favourable conditions and various new business models are emerging which reinforce the exponential market growth for solar projects. The current opportunities are attracting intense excitement from entrepreneurs and investors to be a part of the solar growth story of India. However, these opportunities are not without challenges. There are various types of contractual structures and financing mechanisms to contend with. Technologies, business models and market dynamics are evolving. The success or failure of solar projects depends not only on getting units installed, but learning how to financially structure projects.

The proposed workshop will provide an incisive map of the market opportunities, segments, models and barriers in solar, guiding the participants through the site selection, technology selection, finance, planning & development process in a systematic step-bystep approach. International and Indian Case studies will focus on the soar photovoltaic (SPV) as well as on the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies for grid connected power generation. The workshop will be conducted by some of the most experienced industry professionals. The specific objectives of the workshop are to understand;
? the outlook for solar power development given the What is

developments in policies, regulations and conduct of various players? ? reverse bidding for solar has impacted capacity How the addition and what is the outlook for the future? ? What could be the potential trajectory of addition of solar power and its impact on the market? ?select an appropriate SPV technology which meets the How to local site requirements and realises the maximum yield? ? the criterias for a solar site selection and assess the What are solar potential of the site? ? the different steps followed for the solar power What are development? ? the statutory clearances and approvals required for What are solar projects and the related agencies with which the solar developer needs to interact. ? the different financial models and benchmarks to What are assess the project viability? ? the different options for financing solar projects in What are India? ? the criterias on which a lender evaluates the project What are feasibility? This workshop is structured in such a way that it will provide a good balance between theory and practice. The theory will be put in practice with the use of several real-life case studies. The objective of the interactive case studies would be to enable application of the understanding and knowledge gained at the workshop in preparation and delivery of an effective bid / implementation of electricity portfolio, in a simulated environment. The Indian electricity markets, though young, are very dynamic. This course will give the opportunity to get a good overview and understanding of the complexities and risks of the Solar Energy Market in India and will equip attendees with a practical insight into those issues.
