Method of Analysis : Description: Take about 20 ml of sample in a clean Nessler cylinder, observe visually the physical appearance. Requirement: It should be clear, colourless liquid; odourless and tasteless.

3.2

Acidity/ Alkanity Acidity: To 10 ml, freshly boiled and cooled sample in a borosilicate glass flask, add 0.05 ml of methyl red solution. Requirement: The resulting solution is not red. Alkanity: To 10 ml, freshly boiled and cooled sample in a borosilicate glass flask, add 0.1 ml of bromothymol blue solution; Requirement: The resulting solution is not blue.

3.3

pH Measure the pH of the cooled composite sample in a suitably calibrated pH meter. Requirement: The pH should be between 5.00 and 7.00.

3.4

Conductivity Conductivity of the sample is measured in a suitably calibrated conductivity meter at a temperature of about 25.0C Requirement: The conductivity should be less than 1.3 S-cm-1

3.5

Ammonium Sample Preparation: To 20 ml of the sample add 1 ml of alkaline potassium mercuric-iodide solution. Standard Preparation: To 17.5 ml Sample add 2.5 mL dilute ammonium chloride solution and add 1 mL of alkaline potassium mercuric iodide solution.

Requirement: When viewed vertically the sample preparation is not more intensely coloured than a standard preparation. 3.6 Calcium and Magnesium To 100 ml add 2 ml of ammonia buffer pH 10.0, 50 mg of mordant black II mixture and 0.5 ml of 0.01M disodium EDTA Requirement: A pure blue colour is produced. 3.7 Heavy Metals Standard solution: Into a small Nessler cylinder pipette 10.0 ml lead standard solution (1 ppm Pb).add 2.0 ml of the test solution and mix, add 2 ml of acetate buffer pH 3.5, mix, add 1.2 ml of thioacetamide reagent, Test solution: In a evaporating dish evaporate 150 ml of the sample to 15 ml on a water bath and pipette 12 ml into a small Nessler cylinder add 2.0 ml of the test solution and mix, add 2 ml of acetate buffer pH 3.5, mix, add 1.2 ml of thioacetamide reagent Requirement: Allow to stand for 2 minutes and view downwards over a white surface; the colour produced with the test solution is not more intense than that produced with the standard solution. 3.8 Chloride

To 10 ml of the sample add 1 ml of 2M nitric acid and 0.2 ml of Silver Nitrate, solution. Requirement: The appearance of the solution does not change for at least 15 minutes. 3.9 Nitrate Sample Preparation: To 5 ml in a test-tube immersed in ice add 0.4 ml of a 10% w/v solution of potassium chloride, 0.1 ml of diphenylamine solution and, dropwise with shaking, 5 ml of sulphuric acid. Standard Preparation: 4.5 ml of nitrate-free water and 0.5 ml of nitrate standard solution (2 ppm NO3) add 0.4 ml of a 10% w/v solution of potassium chloride, 0.1 ml of diphenylamine solution and, dropwise with shaking, 5 ml of

sulphuric acid. Transfer the tubes to a water-bath at 50o and allow to stand for 15 minutes. Requirement: Any blue colour in the Sample preparation is not more intense than that of standard preparation. 3.10 Sulphate To 10 ml of the sample add 0.1 ml of 2M hydrochloric acid and 0.1 ml of barium chloride solution. Requirement: The appearance of the solution does not change for at least 1 hour. 3.11 Oxidisable substances To 100 ml add 10 ml of 1M sulphuric acid and 0.1 ml of 0.02M potassium permanganate and boil for 5 minutes. 3.12 Requirement: The solution remains faintly pink. Residue on evaporation Weigh an evaporating dish which has been previously cleaned and dried to a constant weight (W1) at 105 . Evaporate 100 ml of the sample to dryness on a water-bath and dry to constant weight at 105o. reweigh the dish (W2) Difference in weights gives the Residue (W2- W1) Requirement: The residue weighs not more than 0.001%W/V (1 mg) 3.13 Total Organic Carbon Total organic carbon content is measured by a suitable instrument Requirement: Total organic carbon shall not be more than 500 ppb.(0.5 mg/L) 3.14 Carbon dioxide To 25 ml of the sample, 25 ml of calcium hydroxide test solution is added. Requirement: The mixture remains clear.
