Manistee High School Band students
get visit from Spanish conductor

There are many lan-
guages in the world, but
music is a universal way of
communicating among all
people.
Members of the
Manistee High School
bands had the rare oppor-
tunity recently to tap into
the knowledge of conduc-
tor Llorenc Mendoza-Ruiz
who came to them from
Valencia, Spain. Mendoza-
Ruiz was brought to
Manistee by Ferris State
University concert band
and symphony director
Richard Scott Cohen, who
is a friend of Manistee Area
Public Schools director of
bands Cynthia Swan Eagan.
Mendoza-Ruiz was
in Big Rapids earlier this
month at Ferris State
University to serve as
a guest conductor at a
Intercultural Concert at the
college. He and Cohen have
been friends for the past
20 years, and that is why
he was invited to serve as
a guest conductor for that
concert.
This is the fifth year
that Big Rapids has had a
Festival of the Arts, and
as director of the concert
bands and orchestra at the
college, I do a concert every
year and bring in a guest
artist, said Cohen. This
year, I brought in a good
friend of mine from the
Valencia area of Spain.
Cohen said that part of
Spain is well known for its
musical background. He
said Medoza-Ruiz is one of
the best in that area, and
has conducted symphonic
bands throughout Spain,
France, Italy, Holland and
Germany.
I have lived in Spain
twice, and the second
time it was as a Fullbright
Scholar doing research
about the incredible band
world they have in that
area, said Cohen. They
have 537 band clubs in an
area that is half the size
of the lower pennisula of
Michigan. It is a big cul-
tural symbol of the region,
and our guest conductor is
one of the most renowned.
He is a wonderful teacher
and conductor.
It was the driving force
why Cohen invited him
to the be the 2012 guest
conductor. Cohen added
that he felt some of the area
high schools could also ben-
efit from the opportunity.
We are going around as
a cultural exchange to the
high schools because bands
in Spain do not work like
they do here, said Cohen.
Most school age stu-
dents take band after
school instruction, and it
is not part of the regular
day studies. The students
also participate in many of
the community bands with
other age groups.
Swan Eagan said that
when Cohen contacted her,
she jumped at the opportu-
nity to bring a world class
conductor to the classroom
to work with her students.
He is actually going to
be rehearsing our students
for some of the pieces we
are going to be doing at our
festival next Thursday,
said Swan Eagan. So, this
is a wonderful opportunity
to have two great sets of
Ferris State University Music Director Scott Cohen,
Spanish conductor Llorenc Mendoza-Ruiz and
Manistee Area Public Schools Director of Bands

Its always best to plan in
advance.
Thelma Duggin, a former
health industry CEO, knew
this to be true in business
and in life, but when it came
to the life of her mother
Elizabeth, advance planning
was a pretty tough sell.
Elizabeth was in her
late 80s at the time and liv-
ing alone in her Alabama
home. Duggin sensed that
her mother could use help
doing light chores around
the house. Her greatest con-
cern, however, centered on
Elizabeths overall care as
she continued to age.
Fortunately for Duggin,
she had access to a pro-
gram called Solutions for
Caregivers, available through
her workplaces employee
assistance program, that has
nurses assess a familys situ-
ation and needs, develop a
care plan and discuss recom-
mendations with the whole
family.
Duggin and her sib-
lings, none of whom live
in Alabama, arranged for
Solutions for Caregivers
to develop a care plan for
Elizabeth. She was assigned
a case manager named Kathy
Hawk to work directly with
Elizabeth at her home.
The way Duggin saw it,
Its better to do this before
they need it.
But there was an issue.
Mom did not want it,
Duggin said.
It turned out this simple
step helped the whole family
outpace a series of potential
problems. When an illness
placed Elizabeth in the hos-
pital, she asked to receive
care from her former physi-
cian. Kathy filled out the
paperwork to enable that to
happen. Elizabeths condition
required her to receive care
at a skilled nursing facility;
Kathy rated different facili-
ties and found one that most
closely met Elizabeths needs.
She took the reins when
Elizabeth developed diabetes
and, later, a blood clot.
It comes down to peace
of mind for your loved one,
said Duggin. You feel totally
comfortable and confident.
Kathy will pick up on things
when she talks to our mother
that we wont. Its been a
lifesaver.
Now 91, Elizabeth
remains active and actively
involved with her family.
Elizabeth now resides
in assisted living. She talks
with Kathy weekly and Kathy
sends the family a weekly
report.
