ATTACKING PLANTS IN THE LOBBY
With the lovely Ladybird Johnson Wildower Center just across the freeway, we
knew we wanted to pay tribute to the amazing ora in such close proximity with our
new lobby decor. Of course, we had to put our own genre lm-loving twist on that
idea, because plants are cool and all but what if they were jaw-snapping, mutant
plants! And so we came up with the idea of the new under attack lobby theme that
well be using for all Alamo lobby decors from here on out, and made Slaughter
Lane the very rst to be attacked with these monstrously awesome monster plants
created by Blue Genie Art.
NEW TABLES
A practical highlight, yes, but one were very excited to see in action! These new
tables are custom designed for two folks to share. Theyll feature plenty of room
for food and drinks, to be sure, plus ample room in between them for getting to and
from your seat -- no more ducking out under the tables necessary!

GRAND OPENING EVENTS
Afternoon Tea: SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
Dir. Ang Lee, 1995, PG, 136 min
SR 3/24
You might think we created our new Afternoon Tea series just to have an excuse
to nibble on delicious British baked goods. Or you might think we started it as a
reason to watch period lms with gorgeous costumes and classy British accents.
Well, congrats, smarty pants, because youre correct on both counts! Were excited
to bring Afternoon Tea with the Austen classic SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, featuring
luminous performances by Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet set against the
beautiful English countryside to our brand new Slaughter Lane location. The
Academy Award-winning screenplay highlights the thrilling (but always polite!)
drama and heartbreak of Jane Austens novel, complete with secret engagements,
scoundrels and the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood. Feel as elegant and rened
as the Dashwood sisters while you sip on tea, and swoon with a scone over the
adorable Hugh Grant and exceedingly dashing Alan Rickman. Whether your
inheritance is 5000 or 500 a year, everyone is invited to this delightful and
delectable afternoon! (Sarah Pitre)
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
Spaghetti Western Dinner
Dir. Sergio Leone, 1966, R, 161 min
SR 3/22
The Spaghetti Western Dinner is a hallowed tradition going back to the early days
of the Alamo. We screen a classic Italian-made Western and serve up all the salad,
foccaccia and spaghetti you can eat. Dont forget the red wine!
Quentin Tarantino has called THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY the best directed lm
of all time and we wouldnt presume to disagree with him. Sergio Leones mastery
of the frame is apparent throughout. Naturally his cast doesnt hurt: Clint Eastwood,
Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach (who steals the movie) became instant screen
icons, and deservedly so. Composer Ennio Morricones theme song has become
aural shorthand for the western itself, but the entire score is purest genius. As a
lm its the richest, most satisfying evenings entertainment imaginable. Perfect
proportions of violence, humor, intrigue and now pasta. Dont miss out!
PEE-WEES BIG ADVENTURE BIKE-IN ROADSHOW
Dir. Tim Burton, 1985, PG, 90 min

dinosaurs, wild animals, ninjas, chubby billionaires, escaped convicts, buckin
broncos, tone-deaf hobos, unwanted romance, bbing gypsies, clumsy Godzillas,
basement-less Alamos, vengeful boyfriends and even an undead trucker! Fun
didnt exist until Pee-Wee invented it, and now the most funrocious, funtacular,
fungorious funsplosion in the history of FUN will be presented on the big outdoor
screen! So bike on in to the most hilarious, entertaining and downright PERFECT

LORD OF THE RINGS HOBBIT TRILOGY FEAST
Dir. Peter Jackson, PG-13, 640 min, digital
SR 3/25
Behold, friends big and small, elf and non-elf, its our One Feast to rule to them all!
Normally we only embark on this epic cinematic and gastronomic adventure once
a year in Austin, but we just couldnt resist making it a part of our Slaughter Lane
Grand Opening festivities. For those whove never heard of this life-changing quest
and/or dont know a hobbit from a hobo, well, heres the deal: At the LOTR HOBBIT
TRILOGY FEAST, we snuggle up together in the theater and brave our way through
the ENTIRE extended-cut versions of the LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY -- nearly 12
hours -- all while devouring food and imbibing drink inspired by Tolkiens Middle
Earth! Each of the seven courses is served during Hobbit meal times (which is
pretty much ALL the time)! When we reach the end and the King (spoiler alert!)
ascends to his rightful throne, you too will be ready to return to the Shire and be
greeted as a hero by your loved ones who didnt think you would make it all the
way...and then pass out in a blissful food- and lm-induced coma.

LADIES OF THE 80s Sing-Along
SR 3/24
Girls just wanna have fun!
Thank you, Cyndi Lauper, for showing us that it would be okay to show our TRUE
COLORS. Thank you, Madonna, for telling us what it feels like to be touched for the
very rst time. Thank you Pat Benatar, for standing heartache to heartache with us.
And Olivia Newton-John, we never would have known how to get physical without
your guidance. This show is for all of you. The LADIES OF THE 80s SING-ALONG has
been one of the Action Packs most popular shows for years now, and this year
weve got all of the favorites back, with a few choice new selections that havent
been featured in any Sing-Along before. So well have the 99 red balloons bouncing
around in the theater, and well have naked men raining from the balconies for
the Weather Girls. Forever is gonna start tonight and dont ya wanna dance with
somebody? (Greg MacLennan & Henri Mazza)
Master Pancake: BACK TO THE FUTURE
Dir. Robert Zemeckis, 1985, PG, 116 min
SR 3/23
Master Pancake lampoons BACK TO THE FUTURE, a lm so iconic that for a brief
period in the mid-80s it convinced people that De Loreans, down vests, and Huey
Lewis were cool. Michael J. Fox (FAMILY TIES, TEEN WOLF) stars as Michael J. Fox
-- or Marty McFly as hes called here -- who travels back in time in order to save
his professorial pal Doc, played by Christopher Lloyd (TAXI, STAR TREK III). Along
the way, McFox ends up inventing rocknroll, changing history, and almost dating
his own mom. Youll have 1.21 jigowatts of fun at this Oedipally complex movie, as
Master Pancake ris on BACK TO THE FUTURE! (John)

If theres a mission that no man could survive... then John Matrix is the man for

the mountains of northern KahLeeFornia when he catches wind that someone is

GRAND OPENING EVENTS
Cinema Cocktails: FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
Dir. Terence Young, 1964, PG, 115 min
SR 3/26
One of the coolest things about our new Slaughter Lane location is that we can
watch the latest state-of-the art digital restorations of classic movies while
enjoying a wider assortment of adult beverages. Were not going to tell you what
to order when you sit down to watch this all-time favorite Bond lm, but well
denitely have a Russian vodka martini, shaken and not stirred as we watch Sean
Connery outsmart S.P.E.C.T.R.E and romance Soviet beauty Tatiana Romanova in one
of the most exciting Bonds ever. Superior entertainment and superior spirits. This
is living.
THE THING
Dir. John Carpenter, 1982, R, 109 min
SR 3/26, 3/28
John Carpenters brain-blasting masterpiece of shape-shifting horror returns to
the big screen to erase all pretenders to its throne! Though technically a remake of
the 50s classic THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, its an entirely dierent kind of
lm. The story follows a group of researchers at an Antarctic base who accidentally
unleash a frozen alien force that can occupy the bodies of living creatures. The
constantly metamorphosising creature is displayed very, very graphically, thanks
to the work of practical eects genius Rob Bottin. Its a visceral horror movie that
punches you in the face with gross-out gore eects and then knees you in the groin
with pinpoint suspense timing. Kurt Russell is at his badass best as Mac McReady,
a Vietnam vet with a shady past who is mankinds last hope against the invader.
Could this be the best sci and/or horror movie of the 80s? Yes. Yes it is.
Girlie Night: DIRTY DANCING
Dir. Emile Ardolino, 1987, PG-13, 100 min
SR 3/27
When DIRTY DANCING came out in 1987, it changed my life. As I breathlessly
watched Baby and Johnny stun the country club set to the soaring notes of Time
of Your Life, I realized that dance had the power to change things! Dance could
overcome social and racial barriers; it could break down prejudice; it could even
transform a really annoying person like Baby into someone awesome! Thanks
to DIRTY DANCING, I came to understand the power of dance, and consequently
discovered my favorite genre of lm: the dance movie. Baby and Johnny paved
the way for future silver screen amalgamations of love on the dance oor; in
other words, without DIRTY DANCING, there would be no STEP UP 2: THE STREETS
(a horrifying thought, I know). With such a monumental legacy, DIRTY DANCING
deserves our utmost respect, as well as a high amount of romantic mega-sighs.
Obviously, theres no better place to celebrate it than Girlie Night, where chair
dancing is encouraged and absolutely no one will be put in the corner.

THE LIFE AQUATIC DINNER PARTY
THE DARJEELING LIMITED Avery Beer Dinner
Dir. Wes Anderson, 2007, R, 91 min
SL 3/20
Join as we celebrate brotherhood, the Kinks, train travel, the pain of life, Indian
food and of course CRAFT BEER with this special presentation of THE DARJEELING
LIMITED. Filmmaker Wes Anderson has a knack for poignantly exploring the
quirkiness of his characters while simultaneously revealing glimpses into the
human condition- oh, also his soundtracks are always pretty groovy. Adrien Brody,
Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson star as three guys with unique enough
schnozzes to play believable brothers on a spiritual journey across India to cope
with the emotional baggage left behind by their recently deceased father. Weve
worked closely with our friends at Avery Brewing Company to pair their superb
The witty jokes and breathtaking scenery will pair impeccably with the Avery

Fish and Chips Dinner Party
Dir. Wes Anderson, 2004, R, 119 min, 35mm
SL 3/7
Once internationally famous and respected, oceanographer Steve Zissou now
nds his whole world in crisis: His best friend and longtime partner was killed
by a mythical shark while lming their latest adventure; he ex-wife/co-producer

Wilson) has just showed up who thinks Steve might be his dad. Under these
circumstances Zissou and his trusted team of intrepid (mist) explorers -- along
with a very tenacious, very pregnant journalist (Cate Blanchett) -- embark on
a quest aboard the Belefonte to track down the elusive shark A wonderfully
o-kilter, surprisingly touching study in human imperfection, THE LIFE AQUATIC

loaded with his signature charms and boasts a killer soundtrack. For this special

Jay, who reveals personal childhood stories and the struggles of life in Memphis.
ALMOST FAMOUS
Dir. Cameron Crowe, 2000, 122 min, R, 35mm
RZ 3/5
Inspired by writer-director Cameron Crowes real life experiences as a teen rock
journalist, ALMOST FAMOUS is an ode to 70s rock n roll thats loving and nostalgic
in the best ways possible, and certainly was one of the best movies of 2001 --
and one thats actually aged very well a decade or so on. Sure, it teeters a bit
on the schmaltzy side but theres just so much about this movie that is right on.
Like what? Well, theres Stillwater, the lms ctional band, a set of hazy, hirsute
70s heroes-on-the-rise who are probably the realist movie band ever. Theres
the soundtrack: The Who, Skynard, Simon & Garfunkel, and of course Elton
Johns Tiny Dancer (featured in the lms schmaltziest yet most memorable
and moving scene). And theres the characters, all of whom happen to be eshed
out real people instead of 2D rock. Oh, and then theres the cast. Its a veritable
whos who of talented folks, like heavy hitters Frances McDormand and Phillip
Seymour Homan, then-newcomer Patrick Fugit, the always likable Billy Crudup,
and Jason Lee before his name was Earl. The lm also probably launched Kate
Hudson into romcom superstardom; but hey, it also was one of the rst to bring
Zooey Deschanel to the worlds attention too.

Dir. Je Lieberman, 1981, R, 98 min, 35mm
RZ 3/20
UNSEEN EXTENDED CUT; NOT AVAILABLE ON DVD! Why do fancy, rich city folk love
to traipse out into the wilderness and disturb REAL people? I mean, I dont see
any cannibalistic yokels sub-leasing the condos in downtown Austin. Anyway, the
machete-wielding hillbillies of backwoods Oregon have had their ll of sexually
active young professionals, and JUST BEFORE DAWN chronicles their extremely
ecient systematic nerdicide in juicy detail. The blood-crazed locals use every
available method of homicide, turning nature itself against our hapless, helpless
protagonists. Director Lieberman had worked in similar locales for his 1976
carnivorous worm epic SQUIRM, but this vastly superior rural slashbash nds him
at the peak of his anti-human talents, and its climax features one of my all-time

THE DEADLY SPAWN
Dir. Douglas McKeown, 1983, R, 81 min, 35mm
RZ 3/6
McKeowns low-budget backyard sci terror epic is THE dening accomplishment
in the mighty 80s Homemade Horror genre. An alien meteorite unleashes a
hideous, carnivorous beast that gorges insatiably on the unwitting denizens of a
New Jersey town. The massive meatmonster grows exponentially while it casts
o knife-faced leechlets to further the annihilation. No one is o limits; old ladies
and adolescents and everyone in between are all fair game for this unstoppable
eating machine. From unbelievable creature creations to some of the best horror
dialogue ever captured, no shoestring production before or since has contained
a fraction of the fearless lmmaking on display here. Shot for the cost of a new
washer/dryer combo, THE DEADLY SPAWN is a bona de, undeniable f-you to major
studio exploitation crammed with an impossible amount of ambition, masterful
latex eects and unbridled, esh-ripping satisfaction. (Zack)

NOT AVAILABLE ON DVD! Ill go ahead and tell you the plot but that doesnt
mean youre gonna accept it: A group of college students lock themselves in a
medical facility to play an all-night walkie-talkie version of Dungeons & Dragons.
Unbeknownst to them, an experimental biologist (played by the great Roddy
McDowall) has chosen this very same night to inject a baboon with a serum that
makes it go violently maximum butt-shit insane. The building quickly transforms
into a one-boon slaughterhouse, as the role-playing goonwads are systematically
disemboweled by the most spastically pissed-o primate to ever beat its face
against a ruptured torso. The producers must have knit a really big blindfold to
wrap around every single member of the ASPCA, as Shakma slams and claws and
shrieks like Louie Anderson at a pizza sale. Any major studio horror production
would nd a way to simulate a rabid baboon on a rampage, but this no-budget
fatalityfest uses the REAL DEAL. Truly, genuinely terrifying. (Zack)

The thinnest plotline imaginable (two foxy sisters hit the road after killing their

EMMA MAE
Dir. Jamaa Fanaka, 1976, R, 100 min, 35mm
RZ 3/7
From the great Jamaa Fanaka, director of crowd favorites PENITENTIARY and
WELCOME HOME BROTHER CHARLES, comes this underheralded blaxploitation
classic. Emma Mae, straight o the farm, comes to live with her aunt and uncle in
the projects of South Central LA when her mother dies. At rst Emma Mae, with her
Southern drawl, unfashionable Sunday clothes, and country ways, seems totally
unequipped to deal with the big bad ghetto, but pretty soon shes at the top of
the heap, mainly due to the fact that she can kick more ass than a donkey. Its not
typical blaxploitation, so if youre looking for an excuse to dress like a pimp and
drink Colt 45, you may be disappointed. But if you love black culture of the 70s get
ready to have a new favorite movie. Fanaka really takes the time to create eshed-
out, memorable characters - and he lets them talk, hilariously and engagingly. So
that when the time comes for Emma Mae to kick ass you may be surprised to nd
yourself standing up in your seat cheering her on. (Lars)
THE LIBERTINE

RZ 3/28
Hollywood movies have always had the biggest budgets, the most well known
stars, the most procient technicians etc. But one thing the American lm industry
has never been able to gure out is how to make good sex movies. In the 60s and
70s European lmmakers turned out sex movie after sex movie, some of them
classics, most not, but on the whole pretty hot stu. This movie is fairly goofy in
some ways but it carries a charge where it counts, just below waist level. Its the
story of a young widow (Eurosex goddess Catherine Spaak) who discovers that her
sainted late husband had kept a specially outtted apartment for his extramarital
frolics. And what an apartment! Mirrors on every wall, secret cameras, built-in
bondage playscape. Shes shocked, but intrigued. Thus begins a delirious sexual
odyssey. She indulges her every desire until she nally nds the one man who
can satisfy her weirdest, most desperate need. You wont believe it. Originally
distributed by Radley Metzgers Audubon Films. Music by Armando Trovajoli. (Lars)

Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, the lm follows the tribulations of our four heroines:
Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. Each of the 4 ladies represents a dierent
personality type: promiscuous, easy, trampy, and brothel-ready. To round out the
cast and make it feel less WASPy, the director has given a small role to Jennifer
Hudson, fresh from her 7th place nish on American Idol and still rocking a perm!
For those of you who never thought youd be interested in seeing this movie (Im
looking at you heterosexual men) think of it as GHOSTBUSTERS for women. The
four main characters wear ridiculous outts, romp around NYC, and are always
getting slimed. For those of you who love this movie, its an excuse to see it all

BREAKIN 2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO
Studio Ghibli Retrospective:
NAUSICAA AND THE VALLEY OF THE WIND
Dir. Hayao Miyazaki, 1984, PG , 117 min, 35mm
SL 3/2-3/9
All the Miyazaki hallmarks are in place: rapturous explorations of natural vistas,
a fascination with ight and ying machines, and a spunky female lead out to
change the world, or at least hold her corner of it together through sheer love.
Nausica is the princess of a rural valley that lives at peace on the edge of a
deadly fungal wasteland, until a ship carrying a weapon from a bygone industrial
age crash-lands nearby. When warriors from a far country come to retrieve the
artifact, their invasion draws Nausica and her people into a sprawling political
conict. Part epic adventure, part environmental tract, part early testing ground
for the themes and characters of Princess Mononoke, Nausica is in some ways a
grim and serious lm, but it mixes a sweet optimism into its horror-lled lessons.

Turbo (Michael Boogaloo Shrimp Chambers), Ozone (Adolfo Shabba-Doo
Quinones) and Special K (Lucinda Lucinda Dickey Dickey) returned to the big
screen just seven months after their initial pop-n-lock opus, this time to rescue an
inner city youth center from a diabolical (a.k.a. Caucasian) land developer. NOTE: if
you didnt see the rst movie, dont worry about it, because neither did this lms
screenwriter. Anyway, with the help of newly inducted action-dancers like 8-year-
old Lil Wizard, a mime, and spandexpunk Jane, their road to inevitable triumph is
both unrealistic and unreasonably entertaining. Just take my word for it: this is the
most body-rockin pop-n-lockin never-stoppin musical megaride of the last two
centuries! AND itll be preceded by an all-new elektro-fueled set by Austins own
unicorn/eagle/dog rock combo: The Charles Edward Cheese Band! Youd be straight

The Late Show: DUNE
Dir. David Lynch, 1984, PG-13, 137 min, 35mm
RZ 3/2 & 3/3
According to Hollywood lore, director David Lynch was hot o an Academy Award
nomination for THE ELEPHANT MAN when George Lucas approached him with an
oer to direct RETURN OF THE JEDI (!?!). Sadly, Lynch declined and well never
get to see how the mind behind ERASERHEAD would have envisioned the Battle of
Endor. (And perhaps sadder still, Lucas didnt think to call him up again a decade
or so later...) What we do have though is DUNE, Lynchs feature lm take on Frank
Herberts sprawling sci- saga about a prophesied messiah coming to his destiny
in an galactic feudal society that runs on spice. Condensed down to a too lean
137 minutes, the plot of DUNE is murky like the air during a sandstorm on the titular
planet -- especially for those unfamiliar with the books. No matter, it still has more
than enough Lynchian panache to be worth a watch or re-visit (especially if one is
well spiced). And if thats not enough for you, well, would it help to know that you
see Sting running around crazy-haired and mostly naked and the soundtrack is by
Toto? Yeah, I thought so. Put that in your stillsuit and suck it, Lucas.

Ill be the rst to admit that when I was in high school, I thought cheerleaders
were kinda lame. I mean, the big hair, the short skirts, the pom poms... what was
the point?! But then I saw BRING IT ON, and suddenly, I totally wanted to be a
cheerleader. I wanted to shellac my head with hairspray and perform crazy ips
in the air and compete at Nationals and shout Brr! Its cold in here! There must
be some Toros in the atmosphere! and irt with a boy just by brushing my teeth
because cheerleaders can do all of those things! At least, they can when theyre
played by a chipper Kirsten Dunst, a badass Eliza Dushku (I still think of her as
Faith) and a erce Gabrielle Union. Throw in the adorable guitar soloist Jesse
Bradford, and Im ready to pack up for cheerleader camp. While it might be hard
for some people to believe in the awesomeness of BRING IT ON, we know the truth

Big Screen Classics: HAROLD AND MAUDE
Dir. Hal Ashby, 1971, PG, 91 min, 35mm
RZ 3/19-3/27
Black comedies dont come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and
they dont come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the
perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by
Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old
named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth
Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude nds something oddly appealing about
Harold, urging him to reach out and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling
morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--shes a lot more fun than
the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make
Harold & Maude one of the sweetest and most unconventional love stories ever
made. Featuring soundtrack songs by Cat Stevens, this comedy certainly wont
appeal to all tastes (it was a box-oce op when rst released), but if youre on
its quirky wavelength, it might just strike you as one of the funniest movies youve
ever seen. (Je Shannon)
BATTLE ROYALE
Dir. Kinji Fukasaku, 2000, NR, 114
LC & SR 3/16, 17, 18, 20
One of the most controversial Japanese lms of the decade is nally getting a
much-deserved theatrical release! A bona de cult sensation, BATTLE ROYALE
made a big impression on a certain Mr. Quentin Tarantino and denitely served
as inspiration for that other movie coming out about teens brutally ong each
other in a Most Dangerous Game of survival (psstTHE HUNGER GAMES). Like a
CLOCKWORK ORANGE for the 21st century, this blood-soaked satire by the late
great Japanese director Kinji Fukasaku is the tale of a dystopian society of the
not-too-distant future overrun by teen violence and rebellion. In an extreme eort
to restore order and curb the countrys pesky juvenile delinquent problem, the
Japanese government passes an act which sanctions an annual death match where
an entire high school class is kidnapped, taken to a remote island, and given three
days to kill each other -- leaving just one victor. Long withheld from U.S. theaters,
BATTLE ROYALE is a provocative masterpiece-- dont miss your chance to nally
see it on the BIG screen!
Asian Invasion: FLYING MASTERS OF KUNG FU
Dir. Artis Chow, 1979, NR, 88 min, 35mm
RZ 3/18
Last year we played the Taiwanese reality eraser SHAOLIN INVINCIBLES, starring
the immortal Judy Lee and a bunch of kung fu gorillas. Afterwards none of us
were quite sure if it had really happened. Here the diminutive Miss Lee lights up
the screen as the Heartless Lady who will stop at nothing to nd her fathers
killer, even though the real culprits have framed her for murder and dispatched
an all-star assortment of bizarre and colorful super-killers to stop her. Theres a
one armed swordsman, a female dart specialist, and best of all a guy who throws
gnarly exploding metal skulls with his mind! Lee (wearing a high bouant hair-do
with a bone in it for some reason) rips them apart and looks great doing it, like a
deadly Asian Pebbles Flintstone. (Lars)

The quintessential midnight movie. I mean, Jack Nance as Henry Spencer with his
crazy eyes and frizzed up, backlit pile of hair has been the poster child for cult
movies for decades. Then theres the lady in the radiator signing In Heaven. Oh,
and then theres The Baby. Dear god, THE BABY!! Horror lm? Hallucinatory satire?
A dream of dark and troubling things, as David Lynch has described it? Its any

Chemistry 101: TO CATCH A THIEF
Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1955, NR, 106 min
VL 3/28
Movies and love are hopelessly entertwined for most of us. While the truest love
we know is found in real life, its eeting and subject to the inconveniences of
daily living. Not so in the best romantic movies. There is no laundry, no babysitter,
no mortgage; only beautiful people saying beautiful things in beautiful settings.
And even among those romantic movies there are the really special ones, the ones
where we feel a real spark between the performers. We call that spark chemistry.
Chemistry 101 is a new ongoing series of classic couple movies. This time we
have a great one: Cary Grant plays a retired jewel thief who woos rich debutante
Grace Kelly in the south of France. Is he after her jewels? Does he have a dark
secret? Well let director Alfred Hitchcock dish out the plot points. This is a superior
Hollywood romance starring the most charming leading man in movie history and
a gorgeous, real life Princess.
Broadway Brunch: MY FAIR LADY
Dir. George Cukor, 1964, G, 170 min
LC 3/24, 3/25
The science behind our newest series is founded on two simple truths: 1. Brunch
makes us happy. 2. Musicals make us happy. From there, it didnt take a complex
formula for us to gure out that we should combine them into Broadway Brunch,
the greatest addition to mornings since the invention of the mimosa. And were
launching the series with one of our favorite musicals of all time, MY FAIR LADY.
Winner of eight Academy Awards, the lm stars the incandescent Audrey Hepburn
as Eliza Doolittle and the debonair Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins, the professor
who tries to teach her to speak like a lady. Join us for an early afternoon of
delightful songs, tasty brunch food and a little rain in Spain. Even if you danced

loverly. (Sarah Pitre)

Many people may take a jaded eye towards taboo content in movies these days. Not
us. We still get excited any time boobs appear on screen. The appeal is timeless.
And what better cinematic showcase has there ever been for the human anatomy

gratuitous era when erotic encounters happened exclusively under neon lights to
the sounds of smooth jazz. Get sucked into a world of forbidden passions, sexual

we screen NIGHT EYES, the sultry and dangerous tale of a security guard (Andrew

becoming embroiled in her adulterous web. Come recapture that magical feeling

At every installment of Cinema Club we welcome a guest expert for a very special

written girl gang movie THE VIOLENT YEARS (1956), which postulates that juvenile
delinquency is a communist plot. Second is the hard-bitten psychological horror
lm THE SADIST (1963), starring would-be teen idol Arch Hall Jr. as a psychotic

At Girlie Night, were obviously huge fans of strong, dynamic heroines. And Im
pretty sure that no one has ever been as elegantly badass as Cate Blanchett in
ELIZABETH, which is why its the perfect lm to continue our Afternoon Tea series.
This movie is packed with the classiest actors in the biz, from Georey Rush to
Richard Attenborough, and Joseph Fiennes handsomely performs his swoon-
inducing duty. But of course, its really all about Cate Blanchett. She dees societal
convention, ghts against power-hungry noblemen, launches military battles and
still manages to look completely gorgeous the entire time. At Afternoon Tea, well
crown her the queen of our hearts while sipping on tea as beautifully complex as
the costumes and snacking on treats as delicious as the intrigue! (Sarah Pitre)

Dionysium
SL 3/7
The Dionysium oers a unique, innovative program of debate, lecture, declamation,
theatrical presentation and music in a salon-like atmosphere on the rst
Wednesday of every month at the Alamo South Lamar. Audiences enjoy oerings
not to be found elsewhere in Austin, including the recitation of famous speeches,
participatory discussion in a formal, moderated context, and the opportunity
to participate in the recreation of Ancient rituals. A typical Dionysium show
will feature a lecture, a declamation, a drinking song, a lm or live musical
performance, an appeal to Dionysus, a ction-writing contest, and plenty of strong
drink. But the heart of every Dionysium is the debate, pitting two experts against
each other in toe-to-toe parliamentary combat. Dionysium debate resolutions
have covered everything from Social Security reform to the future threat of
genocidal robots.

THE INTERGALACTIC NEMESIS
Live-Action Graphic Novel
Book Two: Robot Planet Rising
SL 3/3, 3/4
THE INTERGALACTIC NEMESIS is a true Austin original and, thanks in part to a
screening at Fantastic Fest, is now touring the world! Picking up two weeks after
the end of BOOK ONE: TARGET EARTH, we nd Molly and Timmy on Robonovia, the
Robot Planet, in search of the robot LBDO who has somehow become lost in space.
But somehow, Mollys former anc Dr. Lawrence Webster (the world-famous
interspacio-temporal quantum physicist) has journeyed to Robonovia. And just who
is the golden robot Alphatron? And why is he being so darn nice to Dr. Webster?
The creators of ROBOT PLANET RISING have taken an original comic-book series,
removed the word balloons from the art, and project it panel by panel on our screen
while three actors voice all the characters, a Foley artist creates all the sound
eects, and a keyboardist performs the score. LIVE AND IN PERSON!

Dir. Norman Tokar, 1975, G, 100 min, 35mm
SL 3/31
This rampaging Disney Western has three orphans bursting into a wealth of trouble
when they stumble across a huuuuge gold nugget. They semi-accidentally join
forces with two bumbling outlaws the great Don Knotts and the almost-as-great
Tim Conway! - to fend o the greedy townspeople and a surly gang of vicious,
greedy sharpshooters. Knotts and Conway are comic masters, and its pure bliss to
see them ham it up to the max as lovable rogues. With a patented Disney cast of
immensely likable actors including Harry Morgan and the inimitable Slim Pickens,
this really is a genuine classic Disney Kids Favorite that stands the test of time.
The only people who love it more than kids are their parents. So if you like to
laugh, dont miss it. But be warned: your kids will be doing their best Slim Pickens
impersonations for weeks afterward!

FUNNY HA HA 10th Anniversary Screening
Dir. Andrew Bujalski, 2002, NR, 89 min
RZ 3/25
10 years ago, Andrew Bujalski made an excellent, very inexpensive lm in a
style that adapted John Cassavetes techniques and took advantage of its own
technical limitations. The critical praise was enormous and the inuence was wide.
Before long it was a movement - mumblecore. Like most artistic movements, it
encompasses many ne works and provides impervious cover for many bad ones.
But the one that started it all deserves to be appreciated on its own considerable
merits without having to drag mumblecore around with it like some horrendous
tail. We are honored to welcome the writer, director and star of FUNNY HA HA,
Andrew Bujalski back to the Alamo to present his lm and reect on his own
memories of making the lm as it exists today, both as a freestanding work and as
an inuence on the work that followed.
AGFA Reel One Party
RZ 3/4, Only $1
At a secret location in Austin, theres a huge lm archive known as AGFA, the
American Genre Film Archive - this non-prot archive counts among its board
members and advisors Alamo Drafthouse founders Tim and Karrie League and
programmers Lars Nilsen and Zack Carlson. Many of the lm prints contained in the
archive are not fully documented so periodic inspections are conducted at which
time we string up several reel ones, that is to say the rst 15-20 minutes of
dierent movies, for the purpose of taking note of the credit information, condition
of the lm and general plot information. For folks interested in print collecting,
obscure lms and movie history, its fascinating. Past reel one screenings have
uncovered some real gems and some real boring doo-doo, so approach it with a
sense of adventure and help us rediscover a few lost chapters in our movie history
while beneting a great cause.

Austin Film Society Doc Night:
THEY CALL IT MYANMAR: LIFTING THE CURTAIN
Dir. Robert H. Lieberman, 2011, 83 min
SL 3/21
Second only to North Korea in its isolation from the world community, Myanmar
(aka Burma) lifts its veil of secrecy through the camera lens of Cornell professor
Robert H. Lieberman. For two years he travelled throughout the beautiful country
capturing impressionistic images of its people and places, a country composed
of seven major ethnic groups and more than 130 languages. But this is far more
than a travelogue of pretty pictures. Dr. Lieberman secured interviews with various
people, including Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi, who have suered
under the 48-year military dictatorship which plunged prosperous Burma into
poverty. With this lm and with Secretary of State Clintons visit to Burma, there
is renewed hope that the country will once more be open to the outside world and
benet from those connections. English/Burmese with English subtitles.

FILMS OF THE MIDDLE EAST AND BEYOND
Tuesdays @ 7:00pm Feb 21 - April 3
In the past year, the Middle East and North Africa have been transformed by the
Arab Spring, with revolutions in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and Yemen, endless strife in
Syria, demonstrations elsewhere, and the American military withdrawal from Iraq.
Our series of lms from these regions will continue looking at the lives of ordinary
people as depicted by lmmakers native to the region. We will see a love story in
Yemen, a dreamlike world in the Tunisian desert, the struggles of a young woman
in Iran, the strife within a family in Baghdad, a meditative view of Israel, and the
comic dreams of an Algerian gardener. Chale Nafus, Director of Programming,
