Overcoming service delivery and assurance challenges for operational excellence


The 5620 SAM helps service providers, cable multiservice operators (MSOs) and enterprise customers address the key challenge of ensuring operational excellence while they converge services over their IP/MPLS network-infrastructures and introduce advanced IP-based services to customers, including businesses, residential subscribers and partners. The 5620 SAM has evolved beyond the traditional element-management-system fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security (FCAPS) functions to tightly integrate equipment, routing, network and service management. The 5620 SAM sets the standard in automating and simplifying each aspect of the service-deployment life cycle: from robustly managed networkinfrastructure growth through continually increasing platform scalability,

to expansive service provisioning that allows for increased productivity, to heightened assurance that proactively prevents problems and quickly isolates those that arise, to vital statistics for service billing. It also allows for strategic product evolution with the AlcatelLucent product portfolio that facilitates entrance into new business opportunities in managed virtual private network (VPN) business services, triple play, metro Ethernet aggregation, mobile aggregation/backhaul, and enterprise Ethernet access.

High performance, highly modular


The 5620 SAM, Release 6.0 consists of four functional modules: SAM Element Manager (SAM-E): Element management providing traditional FCAPS functionality SAM Provisioning (SAM-P): Networkinfrastructure management, scripting, service provisioning and customer management SAM Assurance (SAM-A): Physical-, network- and service-topology views; operations, administration and maintenance (OAM) servicediagnostics tools (fault/service/ customer correlation and configurationchange management) SAM OSS Interface (SAM-O): Operations support system (OSS) interface gateway The 5620 SAM is the cornerstone of the Alcatel-Lucent SR management portfolio and is used in combination with other applications to deliver seamless solutions. The 5650 Control Plane Assurance Manager (CPAM) offers real-time control plane visualization, proactive control plane surveillance, configuration validation and control plane diagnosis, and with the 5620 SAM, enables service providers to assure network and service availability against control plane misconfigurations, malfunctions and undetected routing updates, and also accelerates service problem resolution over an IP/ MPLS infrastructure.

In the Alcatel-Lucent leading Triple Play Service Delivery Architecture (TPSDA), the 5620 SAM is integrated with the Alcatel-Lucent 5750 Subscriber Service Controller (SSC) to offer dynamic policy provisioning and session access control (SAC) based on bandwidth availability. This capability arms service providers, cable MSOs and enterprise customers with the flexibility to offer a variety of residential subscriber services through self-care portals without impacting the quality of experience of other users. The 5620 SAM also plays a critical role in management for aggregation in the Alcatel-Lucent Metro Ethernet Network Architecture (MENA) and Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture (META).

established policies. These policies are used by operators or OSS applications to bulk-configure parameters on various objects. Changes to policy parameters are applied to all objects using the policy, thus reducing the amount of time required to update a configuration. Policies can also be used to autocreate objects based on a set of rules. Autocreation of service tunnels in a group of routers, according to a userdefined topology, is an example of rule-based policy commissioning. The 5620 SAM policy management enhances standardization and network predictability. Troubleshooting is also simplified with managed CLI scripting for third-party device configuration, in which the system compares new scripts with records of standard configurations.

Network commissioning automation and assurance
Network commissioning and assurance encompass the equipment, routing and service-tunnel provisioning and troubleshooting necessary for preparing the network to deliver services. Automation for these tasks can significantly prevent misconfiguration so that services can be delivered faster. Assurance provides network visibility so that problems are easily detected and isolated for quick resolution during and after the commissioning process. The 5620 SAM offers four methods of automating commissioning, thereby increasing the speed and reducing the risk of errors during the networkcommissioning phase: Concurrent, multiple-object editing using a GUI-driven, form-based configuration method Predefined configuration steps guided by wizards Managed command line interface (CLI) scripting that extends configuration to third-party devices Policy-driven configuration and object autocreation The 5620 SAM also provides networkconfiguration assurance using policy auditing, which reports deviations from

Layer 2/Layer 3 VPN and composite service-provisioning acceleration


The 5620 SAM supports the following services, which follow the same provisioning model to ensure consistency and reduce operator errors: Internet enhanced services (IES) Ethernet virtual local area network (VLAN) services Virtual private wire services (VPWS), also known as virtual leased lines (VLL) (Ethernet, ATM, frame relay, IP pseudo-wires), including pseudowire switching and redundancy Virtual private LAN services (VPLS) Multicast virtual private LAN services (MVPLS) Virtual private routing networks (VPRN), also known as IP-VPN Service mirroring Service providers, cable MSOs and enterprise customers can define service policies, bind them to service templates, and eliminate repetitive and error-prone data entry. This enables providers to customize and standardize their service offering, allowing operators to provision services rapidly and consistently. step-by-step through the process of specifying customer information, selecting service endpoints, and predefining service policies and their attributes (for example, per-service or per-subscriber quality of service [QoS], access control list [ACL] filters, and schedulers). For operators that manually bind sites to service tunnels, the 5620 SAM can automate service-tunnel bindings in the opposite direction. For accelerated activation, a service can be instantiated through automatic mesh binding between sites. The newly activated service can be tested by simply triggering one of the tools in the service test suite. Individual component tests related to the newly provisioned entity are automatically created, with detailed test results containing numerous testspecific data response states and values, target/source information, probes, timeouts, loss, jitter, average/ min/max/standard deviation, sum-ofsquares, round-trip times and more for the specified test (chosen from numerous ping, trace and other tests). Test success or failure is reflected with a separate operational status flag. For flow-through provisioning, templates, policies, automatic binding and automatic post-testing are also available. In addition to the services listed above, the 5620 SAM supports composite services that combine multiple services, such as: VLAN connections to a hierarchical VPLS IES spoke into a VPLS VPLS connected to two customer premises equipment (CPE) Ethernet rings VPRN (IP-VPN) to VPLS interconnection to form a new end-toend service entity This multiservice association is autoinstantiated using service-connection points, correlated with any faults found on the embedded service components and displayed on the service topology map.

View of all physical and logical layers of the network


The 5620 SAM offers a comprehensive array of physical-network or logicalnetwork views that support operators during configuration and subsequently during troubleshooting. Serviceaffecting problems can range from simple to complex for quick diagnosis and resolution; for example: A physical hardware problem leading to a down-port state Misconfigurations of port-mode, encapsulation, or MTU size parameters Failing to add a service access point (SAP) to a service An OSPF, IS-IS or BGP routing-instance network-interface misconfiguration that causes a lack of interface peering, causing MPLS label switched paths (LSPs) to go down, that in turn cause service tunnels (session distribution points [SDPs]) to go down, and so on Even with a fully redundant AlcatelLucent SR network with configured service resiliency, there is always a risk that problems may surface. The 5620 SAM is ready to alert and make the root cause of these problems visible so that corrective actions can be taken quickly. In addition to the traditional equipment view and physical topology, the 5620 SAM offers OSPF and IS-IS views, which are organized by areas and show routing adjacencies. Also available is a network view, in which operators can drill down into any network element (NE) to view its configured protocols (OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, Label Distribution Protocol [LDP] and MPLS) and their associated interfaces, administrative status and membership area. The topological maps graphically depict: Physical topology LSP topology Service-tunnel topology between nodes Service topology, including color-coded active/standby paths, deduced VPRN topology, and end-to-end composite services maps

The service-topology maps are invaluable for operators who need to visualize all resources traversed by a service, including the actual routes across the network.

Root cause and serviceimpact analysis


The 5620 SAM offers integrated fault and service management: alarms generated by a network object are propagated to higher-level objects in the managed-object hierarchy. This immediate correlation of network events with services enables service providers, cable MSOs and enterprise customers to quickly determine which customers are affected by a network event. A service alarm can be further leveraged to determine the sites and service components that are affected. A state cause, such as a binding or MTU mismatch, can be found against the affected components, pointing to the root cause of the impacted service and enabling operators to quickly identify the cause of the outage. The 5620 SAM, Release 6.0 offers enhanced alarm correlation that can dramatically reduce the number of alarms in the alarm window by collapsing correlated alarms into a single correlating alarm for easy determination of the root cause of the problem. An object life-cycle status has also been introduced, allowing further filtering on in-service alarms for Network Operations Center (NOC) operations or maintenance/commissioning alarms for those performing provisioning tasks.

Service verification and proactive SLA testing


The 5620 SAM has a number of leading service-aware diagnostic tools to verify all aspects of operation, both end-toend and across all IP, Ethernet, MPLS and transport layers. Test suites, combined with an ordered series of serviceaware OAM tests, simultaneously test every aspect of a group of services or network objects such as routers, LSPs or tunnels. The 5620 SAM automatically creates all necessary individual OAM

tests for each entity contained in the group. In addition, tests are automatically updated when objects are added to or removed from a group. Test suites can also be scheduled for each service and compared to configurable parameters, such as jitter, delay and packet-loss metrics, to proactively detect service and network degradation. Rule-based alarm notification further automates service assurance and adherence to service level agreements (SLAs) by directing the operators attention and escalating alarm severity when a test suite fails certain criteria over a defined period of time.

Mediation for OSS applications


The 5620 SAM functionality is fully accessible through an open OSS interface. The open OSS interface uses Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Java Messaging Service (JMS) to seamlessly integrate with external OSS applications for flow-through process automation of frequent management tasks such as inventory management, service activation, performance management and fault management. OSS systems can also create and execute CLI scripts to configure, activate and retrieve faults for third-party devices, thereby reducing costs by providing a single and stable integration point for a large number of NE types. At the time of each new 5620 SAM release, the 5620 SAM-O further reduces OSS integration time and cost by certifying a number of established brand products from industry-leading independent software vendors (ISVs), such as Axiom, Cariden, EMC (formerly Smarts), HP, IBM (formerly Micromuse and Quallaby), InfoVista and Subex Azure (formerly Syndesis), through the AlcatelLucent Connected Partner program.

Upgrade service
The upgrade of the 5620 SAM software components in a network requires a thorough understanding of 5620 SAM system administration and operating system (OS)-specific requirements. The upgrade procedure must be planned, documented, and tested in advance on a lab system that is representative of the target live network. Alcatel-Lucent offers an upgrade service that should be engaged for upgrades. The 5620 SAM upgrade service ensures that proper planning is done to allow for a successful upgrade. It allows for the necessary preparation, including an assessment of upgrade requirements for network implementation of the 5620 SAM software, method of procedure (MOP) development, and lab-environment testing that delivers consistent, repeatable upgrade results. The upgrade service also includes technical support from experienced Alcatel-Lucent subject-matter experts, who are available to assist and answer questions during or after the upgrade.

User security with Scope of Command and Span of Control


In a time of corporate mergers and acquisitions, outsourcing and organizational change, service providers are being pushed to cross corporate and global boundaries to fulfill expanding mandates and responsibilities. Networks may now be used by others worldwide, and change management and secure access are critically important and/or even demanded by government regulations and policies. With the 5620 SAM Span of Control, providers can subdivide their networks to the lowest level of NEs to assign clear ownership with enforcement using security privileges (for example, subdivide by geographic location, organizational groups, role/job function, or on an individual basis). The 5620 SAM, Release 5.0 introduced Scope of Command to allow only specific users the privilege of using specific functional operations and commands. Now, the 5620 SAM, Release 6.0 introduces Span of Control to protect against prohibited user functions within the scope of the network and to assign service-management responsibilities by allowing only specific users to access specific NEs.

Custom Service Portal and OSS toolkits


The Alcatel-Lucent Custom Service Portal and OSS toolkits enable service providers, cable MSOs and enterprise customers to create or supplement an existing customer portal by using the Alcatel-Lucent Portal Development Service (PDS) to fully leverage the 5620 SAM-O interface. The service-aware nature of the 5620 SAM and the availability of all services through the 5620 SAM-O interface provide a comprehensive, end-to-end customer view that is correlated with end-to-end operational status and supported by extensive testing capabilities.

Develop CLI/scripts that can be deployed centrally across the entire network using a sophisticated GUI builder. Develop scripts to easily provision a service by looking at a map and selecting the multiple endpoints of the service. The 5620 SAM scripting simplifies flow-through provisioning for all service types with a few templates, using a service topology and common model of all services, including redundancy and variance.

Block attempts to change equipment/routers by users who are not within an operators profile (for example, for port or site configurations). Block attempts to access scripts, templates, and test suites outside of an operators span. Add prefiltering to a user profile for common objects, alarms and OSS (for example, users could only see LSPs terminating on a router inside their span).
