The tasks presented in the course are meant to prepare students for activities they will have to perform in real life situations either as medical students or as health care professionals, (e.g. asking for or giving information; reading scientific journals; listening to lectures and taking notes, writing an application; communicating with patients and their families; meeting fellow doctors). The various tasks require learners to practice the language skills they need. Each task demands the use of one main skill which is integrated with other skills. While trying to extract the main ideas from a lecture, one will have to take notes, which will later use in writing a report. The course consists of a range of interesting and challenging topics, of stimulating activities that engage students thinking abilities. C. Course Requirements This course is focused on vocabulary issues, consisting of a variety of exercises appropriate for students requiring a working knowledge of English medical terminology. Knowing specialist vocabulary involves more than simply recognizing it. It is important to remember the meaning of a word and to use it correctly. Grammar mistakes may cause serious misunderstandings while they way people pronounce words may also lead to wrong medication or diagnosis. For these reasons it is important that students practice specialist vocabulary so that they can learn top use it more confidently and 1

effectively. The vocabulary taught in this course gives definitions in simple English, which students can read and understand. Students must get used to writing medical terms and to applying them in real life. The Vocabulary Sheet Record at the end of the course plays a key role in language learning and it has to be done at the end of each lesson. It proves a good understanding of the meaning of words. D. They practice different elements of medical vocabulary, enabling the student to gain a fuller understanding of the words learnt. The first section is focused on word-building exercises, encouraging the student to identify links between words and to learn morphologically related words (verbs and nouns which have the same stems). Part 2 The second section analyzes the parts of speech where the emphasis is on understanding meanings and how to use terms in their correct grammatical forms. Students find it easier 2

to assimilate new vocabulary if the words are learned in related groups or in grammatical contexts rather than in isolation. Words often occur in the same context as their opposites and therefore it is easier to learn the pairs of opposites together. Glendinning, Eric H., Professional English in Use. Part 3 The third part of the course helps students practice the pronunciation of medical vocabulary, including topic-specific exercises such as identifying diseases and illnesses from their descriptions. There are also some activities like puzzles and quizzes which are meant to expand students knowledge and use of vocabulary. Glendinning, Eric H., Professional English in Use.
