Arundina graminifolia Bamboo orchid

Bamboo Orchid Plant

All around the world the bamboo orchid plant is admired. It is one of the most beautiful of all the orchid species. There are now vast numbers of types of orchids, some of these are expensive to buy while some are quiet cheap. Equally some orchids require very specific environments to grow and flourish while others are of a sturdier constitution. However, the bamboo orchid plant is a rare breed and therefore not for a novice gardener.

The bamboo orchid plant has a lovely aromatic fragrance, emitted from flowers which are usually soft purple, pale pink or a delicate white. Unlike many orchids the bamboo orchid plant will grow quite high in the wild, sometimes as tall as five feet. There are some environments in which the bamboo orchid will blossom all year round, but it is usually found in flower during summer and through to autumn. The soft colours and the fragrance of the bamboo orchid plant flowers is a great attraction for butterflies, bees and birds. The bamboo orchid plant gets it name from the tall stiff stems which can look like reeds, unlike the usual orchid stems.

The Pacific islands and many areas in Asia are the natural home of the bamboo orchid plant. It is now however, growing in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Panama and is found in large amounts in Hawaii. Despite this increase in the number of areas where the bamboo orchid plant is now growing, there are still risks of extinction in some areas. It is believed that there may be less than two hundred plants now growing in the wild in Singapore; it is thought that the reason for the drop in the number of population of the bamboo orchid plant in this area is due to the destruction of the rainforests.

The bamboo orchid plant can be kept successfully as an indoor plant, however, you will need to make sure that the environment is suitable and that the situation of the plant is correct. The bamboo orchid plant likes humidity at a minimum of fifty percent. If you are in a dry climate you can

place a bowl of water near the plant which will gradually evaporate into the atmosphere creating the desired humidity. The bamboo orchid plant does like the sun, however, it will need shade as well, so near a window would probably offer the best place for your indoor bambooorchid plant. If you live in the tropics you will be able to grow the bamboo orchid plant outside.

As will all orchids the bamboo orchid plant needs to be grown on the correct environment, if you are thinking of growing an orchid it is best to find a local specialist or visit a good garden centre for advice before you buy and they will also be able to make sure that you buy the most suitable species for your situation.

The pink, purple or white daffodil-shaped flowers of bamboo orchids emit a lovely fragrance. This makes up for the fact that the flowers of Arundina bambusifolia are short-lived when cut and so are not often used in arrangements. The leaves, on the other hand, have greater longevity and make a great spray of foliage which will fill out a bouquet.

These terrestrial orchids grow wild in Hawaii. Under ideal growing conditions, they can stretch to 8 feet tall. It will remain much smaller when grown as a house plant. The bamboo orchid gets its common name because its tall, stiff stems resemble reeds or bamboo. This sets it apart, aesthetically, from most other orchids. In its native habitat (the Pacific Islands and parts of Asia) it can bloom year round. Outside of its native range, it will bloom late summer through fall. The large, fragrant flowers are attractive to butterflies and bees. This is an orchid that grows best outdoors. This is because of its need for high humidity. That being said, all orchids like more humidity than is typical in the average home. I once wandered into a specialty shop down in Mt. Dora, FL. The owner hybridizes orchids as a hobby. She had set up a room at the back of the store where she kept the part of her collection which was for sale. I had never seen anything like it. It was a small room, dimly lit and overflowing with every variety of orchid you can imagine. All in bloom. The fragrance enveloped me as I entered and I didn't want to leave. Ever. She had a vaporizer running, which sent a perpetual mist into the air. I think this intensified the perfume.

Cymbidium Boat orchids

Cymbidium plants are sympodial and grow to a height of 60 cm and the racemes as high as 90 cm. The raceme grows from the base of the most recent pseudobulb. Each flower can have a diameter of 5 to 10 cm, according to the species. They bloom during the winter, and each plant can have up to fifteen or more flowers. The fantastic range of colors for this genus include white, green, yellowishgreen, cream, yellow, brown, pink, and red [and orange] (and there may be markings of other color shades at the same time), but not blue and black. The flowers last about ten weeks. They have a waxy texture. The roundedsepals and petals have about the same dimensions. They show very diverse color patterns, different for every species.

It is one of the most popular and desirable orchids in the world because of the beautiful flowers. These plants make greathouseplants, and are also popular in floral arrangements and corsages. They have been cultivated for thousands of years, especially in China. Cymbidiums became popular in Europe during the Victorian era. One feature that makes the plant so popular is the fact that it can survive during cold temperatures (as low as 7 C or 45 F) [Actually they will survive at temperatures below 32F for short periods and even as low as 28F].
