Lesson Plan TWO

Subject: Unit: Topic: Core Learning Goals:

BIOLOGY
Ecology Ecosystem and Public Laws 3.5.1 The student will analyze the relationships between biotic diversity and abiotic factors in environments and the resulting influence on ecosystems. 3.5.2 The student will analyze the interrelationships ad interdependences among different organisms and explain how these relationships contribute to the stability of the ecosystem.

Objective:

Students will be able to: 1. Explain how human activities disrupt ecosystem by watching short video clips and; 2. Describe how Public Laws and the different DHS agencies work together to maintain and regulate homeostasis in the ecosystem by creating a project-based output
LCD projector, laptop, document reader, worksheet By looking at your TerraAqua Column output, name the abiotic and biotic factors and briefly explain how they interact with one another. Accommodations: Use of Highlighter; Extra Response Time; Repetition of Directions; and Use of Large Text (as needed) Class will be shown a short video clip on ecosystem and its disruption. Then students will share their reactions and reflections about the video. Accommodations: Extended Time; Extra Response Time; Repetition of Directions

Powerpoint Presentation and Video Clip

Through powerpoint presentation and video clips, class will discuss ecosystem and how the interplay of the two variations (biotic and abiotic) affect the ecosystem. Disturbance in the ecosystem will also be discussed as well as the US Public Laws on the Environment and the different DHS agencies involved.

Various agencies under DHS will be briefly explain using a document reader. Students will be given a copy of this for their reference.

Accommodations: Prompting When Students are Reciting; Modifications of Questions; Replay Video if Necessary;
Guided Practice: Teacher will introduce how the class project will be accomplished. Guidelines and rubrics to be used for grading purposed will be discussed to the students. Clarifications and questions will also be encouraged. Students will start brainstorming about the project which will be turned in after 5 class days. Teacher will go around to provide assistance.

Accommodations: Extra Response Time, Repetition of Direction; Partner with a More Proficient Student
Independent Practice: By partners, students will have to come up with a project outline. Then they are allowed to bring it at home for review and improvement. Accommodations: Extra Time; Repetition of Directions; Partner with a More Proficient Student PROJECT-BASED OUTPUT: Environmental Public Laws will be shown to the students. By partners, they will choose one Public Law and research about it. After a week, students are expected to present it to the class and turn in an output which could be in the form of a powerpoint presentation, storyboard, a recorded role play or a podcast (song). Students output in any form mentioned above should have the following parts and elements: 1. How does population size affect success of an organism? 2. What is the impact of big changes in a certain population? 3. How can a change in the environment/ecosystem lead to epidemic of disease or disease outbreaks? 4. Identify and explain the ways in which terrorists can use abiotic factors like water, air and soil to plot their attack on the US? 5. DHS is responsible for taking security measures, protection, response, recovery and assistance from both disease outbreak and terrorist attack. Accommodations: Extra Time; Modification of Questions; Less items PROJECT Outline

Project Outline
Title
Here are examples of 3 common types of titles Question: Why are Environmental US Public Laws important in keeping balance within an ecosystem? Summary: Ecosystem and (Specific Environmental Public Law) 2-Part: Ecosystem: Specific Environmental Problem and/or Corresponding Public Law

Abstract
The abstract is a short (about 50-100 word) summary of the entire paper. It should include: objectives, brief description of the project and conclusions. It is usually one of the last parts of the paper to be written.

Introduction
1. It describes the focus and purpose of the project you are presenting. 2. It gives an overview of what is contained in the project.

Discussion
This section is where you prove your point. Also give some description or guide to help the reader recognize your important points. Make sure that your output includes the answers to the questions below: 1. 2. 3. 4. How does population size affect success of an organism? What is the impact of big changes in a certain population? How can a change in the environment/ecosystem lead to epidemic of disease Identify and explain the ways in which terrorists can use abiotic factors

or disease outbreaks? like water, air and soil to plot their attack on the US. DHS is responsible for

taking security measures, protection, response, recovery and assistance from both disease outbreak and terrorist attack.

Conclusions
Here you state what you learned or proved. You may also describe interesting observations, new questions, and future work here.
