FROM THE PRINCIPAL]S DESK:

Last year I made an unfortunate mistake when I promised the students to spend a day on the roof of the school if test scores met the goals because students met all of the goals set by the state (math increased about 7 points!). This means that one day before testing I plan to honor that promise and spend the day on the roof. Also, for this years test students will vote again for what I do if scores improve. As of today Thursday, February 02, 2012, we have 59 days of school left. End of year testing will be April 14-30. Therefore, we have less than 50 school days before testing. Everyone has been working hard to be prepared. Keep up the good work. We are ahead of other schools in our district on AR books even though they have more students :) GO WOLVERINES!!! The academic team has been practicing each Tuesday, and we appreciate Yvonne Jones, Sandy Lewis, and Phyllis Coots volunteering their time. Basketball homecoming was a success, congratulations to Queen Breanna Shepherd and King Chase Adams. Next week is the Boys Basketball tournament and cheer competitions. Good luck teams. There is a dance scheduled tomorrow night, February 3, 2012. There is a play scheduled for Thursday, February 16 in the school gym after lunch. Archery will also begin practice next week. The coaches will be Clarence Jr. Maggard and Johnny Ray Johnson. ESS will begin next Thursday; buses will run. Our school has taken a new look with the construction nearly complete. I would like to thank the Leslie County Board of Education for seeing this project to completion. I would still like to see an addition to connect the gym to the cafeteria (rooms 7 and 8), new ceiling tiles in some classrooms, and a sign out front. Patrick Morgan, Principal

School Clinic Health Update

By: Anna Carey, Executive Director of COLLY

100 Things to do instead of Drugs

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"

The UNITE Club is staying active doing community service projects and learning reasons and ways to not do drugs. To celebrate the 100th day of school the Unite Club came up with 100 things to do instead of drugs. Some of my favorites were talk with friends, eat curly fries, and to clean your room. The theme seemed to say, we would rather do anything than drugseven clean our rooms! The UNITE Club is always trying to think of new ways for community service projects so for the 100th day celebration we chose to do 100 Pennies for PAWS. We have raised almost $100! For every donation we posted the names each student with the names of all their animals. I found out our students have lots of dog and cats as well as fish, horses, goats, chickens, hamsters and even a hedgehog! HLS students love animals. We have lots of ideas for the coming months. Stay tuned!

Kindergarten Physicals The school clinic is now offering physicals for those children currently in Headstart that will be entering kindergarten this fall. This is a required physical for children before they begin kindergarten that the clinic staff will be happy to perform. Physicals are covered by Medicaid. Those with private insurance will be required to pay their co-pay. For those without insurance, the cost is $60. For more information visit the ladies in the clinic or feel free to call them at 279-4657. Some Questions and Answers about the Flu What is the influenza (the flu)? A virus that causes the flu and can be broken into three different types: A, B and C. Influenza can be transmitted through air droplets, contact with nasal secretions, or an infected surface. People often talk about having the flu, but people with the true flu are REALLY sick! What are some symptoms of true influenza? Sudden onset of high fever (102-106F), headache, chills, sore throat, muscle aches, dry hacking cough. Occasionally one can see vomiting, diarrhea, and croup in young children. How is it diagnosed? It can be diagnosed simply by symptoms alone. However, by coming to see your provider a rapid flu test can be performed to give a more definitive result. This test consists of a q-tip swabbed in ones nose. This can tell if you have type A or B influenza or neither at all. This test is helpful, but not always 100% accurate. Your provider will mostly go on your symptoms. How is it treated? Tamiflu is a wonderful medicine when used within the first 48 hours of symptoms. However, after 48 hours Tamiflu loses its effectiveness and there is no other medicine available to treat the virus. Managing symptoms with over the counter medicines is the best form of relief, along with some much needed rest. CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS MUST AVOID ANY ASPIRIN WITH INFLUENZA SYMPTOMS for risk of Reyes Syndrome. How can I prevent it? The best way is to get your flu vaccine every year! Continue frequent hand washing, covering a cough or sneeze, avoiding contact with those who are sick, and staying home if you are sick.

A Visit to the Challenger Center By: Mackenzie Adams

On Wednesday, January 25, 2012 Mrs. Mitchells 4th grade class went to the Challenger Center. They were 18 different activities in the museum. One of the activities that we to do was control a rover. Another on is we go to make a crater and see what the light source on the Mars looks like and go in the A-Cube. The A-Cube was the funniest one. When you walked in the A-Cube you had to put on glasses and different shoes. It was like a big computer screen and it was 3-D too. Once we had completed the stations we sat down to watch two fourth graders interview an astronaut and a coal miner. Their jobs were very similar. After we finished we got to go the gifts shop. There was lots of really odd stuff and food to buy. After that we went to eat lunch over at my moms school (Hazard Community College). We got to go upstairs to do another activity. We got a plastic container filled with birdseed with different color beads and bbs scattered throughout. The beads represented different minerals needed for humans to survive on Mars. We used a serving spoon, slotted serving spoons and magnets to get all the different beads out. I loved getting to go to the Challenger Center!
