Be spontaneous
Everyones up for an
impromptu dinner party and
the location is your place! Dont
fret, you can still set a table thats
a feast for the eyes on the spur of
the moment, says Sam. Take
your cue from something in the
room and build on it. The
bead-draped chandeliers and
glassware make the scene
sparkle, while sheepskin rugs
warm it up. Scatter fruits, plants
or berries according to the
season. And here a lot of lighting
goes a long way. Mix lamps,
candles and tealights to create
a welcoming glow.

A MEAL IS
WHAT YOU
MAKE IT
Eating should be about more
than just refuelling. Dinner
time should be about more
than just food. This festive
season, IKEA FAMILY LIVE
stylist Samantha Grigg
turns the tables to make
the everyday extra special

Eat your greens
Indulge your natural passions
at the dinner table, says Sam.
This tabletop becomes a living
surface with unpotted moss
and succulent plants. Just
ensure your table is moisture-
resistant. I turned a room
divider into a natural backdrop
by weaving twigs and ivy into
it. Ivy wrapped around the
back of the chairs with palm
leaf place mats and earthy
crockery complete the look.

Every tradition starts somewhere. For Danes
Lasse and Henriette its in their Belgian home,
where they settle down for dinner and share
Christmas tales with their children
Who wants to be away from home
at Christmas? Lasse and his wife
Henriette are both Danish but
theyve lived in Brussels for the
past 10 years. In fact, this is
the only home their children

the holiday, but a few years ago
they started a new tradition
a Scandinavian Christmas in

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
BUT THERES STILL A LOT OF STIRRING GOING ON
Last week we had a party with more than 70 guests. Brussels is a real melting pot and there
were people of about 18 nationalities, including close friends from Denmark. We had a cocktail
competition, with 40 or 50 of us squeezed in the kitchen making drinks that was fun!
But Christmas itself is more intimate, just for the family and close friends. The Danish celebrate
Christmas on 24 December thats when the whole family gathers for Christmas dinner. Theres

Being an expat has its advantages, says Lasse. We wouldnt be able to get away with a bright red kitchen in
Copenhagen! We chose a galley design and included a breakfast bar where we eat most of our meals. Im
pleased I left the layout to the IKEA kitchen designer. The space works. We have drawers down low that the
children can access it makes it easier for them to help at mealtimes and plenty of cupboard space to keep
worktops clear, leaving room for the family to cook together. O ABSTRAKT/FAKTUM kitchen units High-gloss red

We decided to invite some

They were puzzled, but

Christmas is a time to
celebrate what is special

EVERYDAY
MAGIC
S
wedish artists Carl and Karin Larsson portrayed
a world that is both everyday and magical. At its
heart was their family home, Lilla Hyttns, and
thecoXpleVte[tileVfXUQiVhiQJVDQdpDiQtiQJVfoXQd
their inspiration in rural Swedish life. Their decoration
is recognised by people today as quintessentially
Swedish, says trends analyst Paula Eklund. At its root
was the idea of good design for the practical, everyday
life at home, but imbued with a playful spirit.
This year, we are celebrating Karins 150th birthday,
explains Lilla Hyttns museum director Lena Nyberg.
Her style is still so modern, she was way ahead of her
time. Her simple rocking chair design similar to the
LILLBERG rocking chair from IKEA was so shocking
to the carpenter who built it, he insisted on delivering
it to her at night!
The Larssons love of everything in its purest form
was rooted in the natural environment, says Paula.

world. Today, the Larssons vision still strikes a chord.
Never more so than on festive occasions, when we
have an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy simple
pleasures surrounded by our family.

Blue is cold. Cool, more like,
says Margareta. In fact, its very
hot right now. Usually its a colour
for the spring/summer season, but
this year its in for winter as well,
especially in darker tones.
Blue is safe. Its dependable, and
it goes with everything. Everyone

the other colours in the home.
Because of this, designers like it
if you buy something in blue,
you know its going to last.
Blue is serious. But it can be fun
you just have to incorporate it
into your own style.
Designers only do black, right? But I wear
blue all the time, says Margareta van den Bosch,
trendsetter at H&M for over 20 years. So blue is
the new black

Clement Bruno, my father, is a chef. Self-taught, self-made. He has worked for 26 years to build
a restaurant that is true to the rustic principles of food he learned in his mothers kitchen - cook
what is close to where you live, and cook it with care. And now if you ask him, he will tell you the
best kitchen is designed like a matriachs kitchen - warm, inviting, unfussy, where good food is
cooked in a simple, satisfying way. He is a post-war child. Born in 1947 in the small family house
down the hill, which my great grandmother bought in 1922. 7his part of Provence was poor then,
and Dads life was the same. He was raised by two strong women, his mother and grandmother,
after his own father left. From an early age he learned to work hard. He would go into the woods
to help forage for food they could get from the ground, usually mushrooms and truffes. 7he
family were lucky enough to have chickens, and ate scrambled eggs with truffes for breakfast,
then whatever was left with toast for dinner. 7here was no waste. Dad says during that time all
he wished for was chocolate, but now he loves to cook with truffes because they remind him of
his youth. His skill has earned him Michelin stars and the title 7ruffe King. He will tell you: 7he
whole world passes through here to eat at my table. But I know everything he has achieved with
his restaurant he has worked hard for, to save us children from what he went through.
2nce I hnished my studies in hotel management, I moved back here - but I wanted a home
of my own. I bought this place and it really is all mine - the space, the style, the mortgage!
I started from scratch with everything. My family havent all been round for a big meal yet but
today Dad, my brother Benjamin, who is also a chef, and my mother Nicole, will come for lunch
with me and my girlfriend Nelly. Now well see if Dad likes to cook in my kitchen!
I PAY IT
FORWARD TO
My grandmother! She cooks for me in
the week - she wouldnt eat if she was
on her own. But Nelly teases me that
I visit her to get out of cooking! In the
restaurant and at home we do the little
green things - recycling bottles, cartons and
paper, washing dishes with organic cleaners
and using eco-friendly light bulbs. My father
plants lots of trees and I drive a hybrid car.

Four golden rules for
entertaining? Make guests
feel like they are in their
own house. Cook what you
are used to. Do whatever
you can afford and the
best you can do. Samuel
The kitchen
should be convivial,
a host should be
open and attentive
Dad has taught me the value of sharing
your good fortune, says Samuel. At the
restaurant we give guests gifts, when people
join the staff we help to make their life
easier - hnding them a place to live, being a
friend. I dont cook much, but I get pleasure
from cooking for my friends. I pick what will
be fun to make - sometimes just to see how
it will turn out. And I make sure I have time
and energy for them. If I cant give guests
that, its better not to invite them - however
good the food might be.
The best food is
cooked with love
and sentiment
You cant be a good chef or a good host if
youre not generous, says Clement Bruno.
Cooking is a love story. You cook with care
and put yourself into it. It isnt important for
the food to be fancy - simple and honest is
good. It is the attention you put into the
cooking that is key - and a good guest also
appreciates this! I remember one restaurant
visitor we actually asked to leave. He wanted
to add cheese and ketchup to his scrambled
eggs and truffes - as if it were fast food!
He didnt understand he had sabotaged the
food - he had to go.

This is also
the story
of a kitchen
makeover that
nearly wasnt
HOW I PLANNED MY KITCHEN
I saw my kitchen in the IKEA showroom and
liked it straightaway the big square of
wood was just what I wanted. But I changed
everything else around. Usually people have
their hob on the island unit but I didnt want
that. To have a big extractor coming down in
the middle of the room would close off the
space. And experience of my fathers kitchen
told me that the best place to chop, slice and
dice food is by the sink. And you need a lot
of space to do this. But to actually cook, you
dont need that much room, so my oven is in
the galley of cupboards running along the
back wall where there is limited worktop
space. Why white? You never get fed up
of white, do you? And its easy to add
accessories to change things.
2004: I have a new home. 2ne room and a
garage. The kitchen is tiny - a galley of cupboards
along part of the wall in the main room. Im
starting from scratch. My idea is simple - create
a modern home to be happy in. 2h, and at least
three rooms.
2007: Work should take a few months. I found the
kitchen I want while in the local IKEA. Five months
on and no end in sight. IKEA FAMILY LIVE magazine
is interested. I keep telling them they can come to
photograph my hnished place in a couple of weeks.
But in the southern sunshine everything seems to
take longer.
2008: The magazine is still waiting. And so am I.
Its good I still believe my childhood dream, that
anything is possible!
2009: Done at last! The magazine is coming today.
Better get some baguettes and fruit.

TIME TO
SHOW YOUR
DARK SIDE
For designer Henrik Preutz, walnut
mixed with warming rich tones is
perfect for a cosy home this winter
WHATS WITH ALL THE WALNUT?
ITS EVERYWHERE THESE DAYS!
Well, walnut does make a home feel cosy. Ive just
designed the ENGAN chest (pictured, 4), part of
the ENGAN bedroom range, in walnut effect. Its
a nice tone to bring in warmth. They say that dark

myth. I think it works best against white walls, for a dramatic effect.
And dont be afraid to use it with other bright colours its actually

WHAT ELSE DID YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU WERE
DESIGNING THE ENGAN RANGE?
The original brief was to make simple but functional furniture for the

PLANT A TREE
Me and the kids love the
outdoors. And although the
tent is stored away now, the
colder weather doesnt stop
us getting out into nature.
This month well wrap up
and go for long walks. If you
fancy getting out and about,
join an organised tree-planting
event, like the one we went
on, pictured above. Trees are
so important. A family of four
can get all the oxygen they
need for a whole year from
just one average mature tree.
So why not plant your own?
November is the best time
for it the soil is warm after
summer but damp from the
autumnal rain, helping a
young tree take root.
Meanwhile, in our own
garden, weve set aside a
small corner as a wildlife zone,
with logs and trimmings left
to grow wild. Its the perfect
habitat for many insects, so
its a great way of teaching the
kids about the natural world.
CHARLIES CHALLENGE
When on a walk, I like to pay
it forward by picking up litter
and putting it in the bin, or
recycling it, to improve the
walk for the next person
who takes the same path.
SORT IT OUT!
Up to 60 percent of the rubbish
in the average dustbin could be
recycled. To get into the habit,
it helps to have an easy-to-use

Food production accounts for 20 percent of the worlds energy

I'm Ailbe. I'm ve years old. I like
riding my bike, treasure hunts and
craftwork. On winter evenings it
gets dark early and I can't go
outside to play. I like doing crafts,
especially cutting things out. Mum
has been to IKEA and bought me
a new lamp called SUNNAN and it
is very special because it's solar
powered. That means it gets
energy from the sun. Tonight, I'm
making a chain of paper children.'
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The SUNNAN solar-powered lamp
can provide up to four hours of
light, explains Marianne Barner,
head of IKEA Social Initiative.

At IKEA, we believe every child

a new desire. In 1989, the United
Nations adopted the Convention
on the Rights of the Child. The
IKEA Social Initiative supports
projects run by UNICEF and
Save the Children, the two
leading global organisations for
childrens rights. The aim is to
give children a better start in life.
Lets hear it

5,500 miles away in Shahdara, on the outskirts of
Lahore, Pakistan, it's 9.07pm. Zubair is carefully
folding his school uniform and smart new tie before
going to bed. I'm 12 years old,' says Zubair, and my
father is a beggar. He would take me to the streets
with him to beg. Ever since I joined the Education
and Counselling Centre No. 7 in Shahdara, I wear
my school uniform and a tie.'
Almost 4,000 children are enrolled in 13 EC Centres
in Lahore,' says Shamshad Qureshi, UNICEF Child

GIVING PROTECTION
There are thousands of children
like Zubair, who have suffered
exploitation and abuse but are
now in a protective environment
at the EC Centres, says
Shamshad Qureshi, UNICEF
Child Protection Specialist.

I have a right to special care
Signicant changes have already
taken place in the lives of the
disabled children involved in the
IKEA-supported initiative in
Vyborg,' explains Paula Keskioja,
Save the Children Programme
Manager for Russia. The children
have become more condent, and
take an active part in activities
like clubs and summer camps.
Taking stock of progress made
so far in breaking down barriers
to social exclusion of disabled
children, there is strong promise
and potential for the future.'

I have a right to equality and a good education
If I couldn't go to school,' says Lu Thi Dung, I would
certainly be very sad, because I would miss my friends
and my teachers.'
Receiving an education in the language you speak
is a basic requirement in fullling a child's right to
survive and thrive and expand their opportunities
so they're able to reach their full potential,' says
Hiba Frankoul, UNICEF International and Corporate
Alliances Specialist. Through the support of IKEA
Social Initiative, UNICEF is working to improve the
quality of education of ethnic minority children in
Vietnam, where such children are usually educated
in Vietnamese - though few actually speak the
language. UNICEF works with schools and
communities to provide education in a safe,
child-friendly environment and incorporate classes
taught in the children's indigenous language. An
estimated 120,000 students like Lu Thi Dung have
participated in the project so far.'

It's home time! Time to play!' says Ins. There has
been a lot of ghting here and my school was damaged.
Before Save the Children came everything was broken,
but now we have a new roof and new chairs and tables.'
With money from IKEA Social Initiative, Save the
Children are rehabilitating schools in Ivory Coast,
providing quality primary education in a safe
environment for 250,000 children in the war-torn
country,' says Johanna Schuster, Save the Children
Corporate Communication Manager. With a good
education the children of Ivory Coast are better
equipped to face the future and can actively change
their society for the better. Just ask Ins.'

OFFERING EQUALITY
If these children only learn in
Vietnamese, school is foreign
to them and they often drop
out. But learning in their own
language from pre-school is a
good foundation, says teacher
Ly Mui Xuan.
CHANGING THE FUTURE
IKEA Social Initiative sides with
the many children, says Marianne
Barner. Since 2000, IKEA has
been working with UNICEF and
Save the Children, supporting
childrens rights. A new

supports UNICEF and Save the

RAISING AWARENESS
A pressing challenge is to get
more disabled children into school.
Equal opportunity in education is
a precondition of a society that
is open and accessible to all, says
Paula Keskioja, Save the Children
Programme Manager for Russia.

Hi, Im Ken Hermann. I like the cool, bare look.
7URXEOHLVLQWKHORQJ'DQLVKZLQWHUP\IULHQGVQG
it a little too cold. Can you help me warm up my home?
Simple! says IKEA FAMILY LIVE stylist Mikkel Kure
Friends homes are so inviting My living room is
rarely used, admits Ken. It gets a little cold in here in
winter. I go to friends houses and they are cosy with
curtains and rugs to warm your toes. When its cold
outside, even my coffee may not be enough to entice
friends over. I was a barista for three years and love to
make coffee the proper way. Thats my excuse for having
a machine thats more expensive than my girlfriends car!
I think the place probably does need a little warming up
MIKKEL: With the strong contrast between the Danish
winter and summer, Ken needs light, movable additions
like cushions, throws and rugs that can be changed easily.

IKEA SOCIAL INITIATIVE
SUPPORTS PROGRAMMES IN
Russia
Save the Children is working with the parents of 500 disabled
children in the Vyborg region of Russia to promote their
childrens right to physical, emotional and educational
development. Through training staff and raising public
awareness, they hope to combat discrimination.
Vietnam
Most ethnic minority children in Vietnam learn from teachers
who do not speak their language. Up to 70 percent of minority
Hmong children drop out of school compared to the national
rate of seven percent. UNICEF is working to provide training
for educators and classes taught in three indigenous
languages. It has already ensured an estimated 120,000
students havent missed out on a quality education.
Ivory Coast
Civil war has devastated the education system in Ivory Coast.
Save the Children has been working to get more than 250,000
children back to school. The Rewrite the Future project is
making school buildings safe, providing basic equipment
and improving teaching quality. So far, 20 schools have
been rebuilt or equipped with furniture, and 500 children
who have never been to school before have been able to
start their education.
More than six million children are being helped by the
34 UNICEF projects alone. Read more at IKEA.co.uk
A chocolate bar? A newspaper? For some
children it means access to a quality
education in a safe environment.
Every year IKEA Social Initiative donates
1 to UNICEF and Save the Children for each
soft toy bought by customers in the run up to
Christmas. Since 2003, over 14 million has
been raised. Last year, just by popping in
store and buying a toy for a loved one, IKEA
customers helped raise over 4 million.
So what difference can 1 make? In
Albania, it buys pens and notebooks for
four school children, and in Bangladesh,
5 provides a teacher for 25 children

oxygen mask, put yours on.
You need a strong focus on
yourself to help others or youll
end up feeling resentful, tired
and put upon.
Showers might use less water

I guarantee everyone who
feels guilty for taking time for
themselves has the least reason
to but really needs to, says Liz.

responsibilities, but you also
need to be aware of your
responsibilities to yourself.

Lotta Khlhorn, designer of the

textiles can make a huge difference
to a room, to a mood, to a persons
life. I look for ideas that add
more to every day

DRESS FOR DINNER
ANNAMOA is the third textile
collection I have designed for
IKEA. I love the endless
possibilities of fabric. Even simple
ideas, like throwing fabric over a
dining table, can change a room.
The crab underwater motif makes
the perfect table dressing for
traditional Nordic seafood feasts.
I also hang fabrics on a washing
line in my kitchen. There are so
many patterns I love, but not
always the space or time to show
them all. This way I have a
constantly changing display.

MAKE LIGHT WORK OF IT
I work on paper and thats how I think of textiles.
Anything I can do with paper, I can do with fabric
covering shelves, hanging in a frame, even
ZUappiQJUoXQdabXcNetoUoZeUpotIf\oXUe
stuck for ideas, just think: What would I do if it
were paper? Repeating patterns is a great idea
show it on a chair pad, a lampshade, a cushion
as is using design on a grand scale. If you see
a pattern you love, let it cover an entire wall like
wallpaper, or a window. With metre fabric you
dont even have to sew. Just clip it to a curtain
pole with hooks.
HOW WILL YOU USE
YOURS? 100s of different
textiles to try in store!

PUSH BOUNDARIES
My apartment is rented so there
are things I cant change, but I
dont let that limit me. I love to
hang wallpaper everywhere, but
that is a big commitment.
Covering a wall with a fabric is
great as you can change it
whenever you want a new look.
And the fabric you take down can
be remade into a skirt, a tea
towel, a bedhead

7 QUICK
QUESTIONS
How do you describe yourself? Im a 46-year-old
designer of patterns for textiles, book covers, even
train stations. Im a wife and a mother of three.
Where do you call home? A 1750s three-bed
SWoFkholmaparWmenWZLWhloYel\orLJLnalreplaFeV
Why design? I discovered I could draw when I was
10 and felt I wanted to do it all the time. The choice
wasnt so strange, my mother is an art teacher.
How did you get involved with IKEA? It started
with a phone call. Its important that the person who
calls me is inspiring they were.
Is IKEA a good boss? Well, ANNAMOA is my third
collection for them What I like about IKEA is being
allowed to keep my style, its a dream for a designer.
Whats the story with ANNAMOA? I was asked to
work with animals and traditional tales, so I sought
out animals like crabs, foxes, tortoises and hares.
What do you like most about designing for
IKEA? I love to be surprised by who uses my
designs. I was shopping and saw an old lady with a
walking frame buying the MALENA patchwork pattern
fabric from my last collection for IKEA.

ith restaurants spread
from New York to
Tokyo, Stockholm to
Chicago, four cookbooks and
two television shows, you might
think Marcus Samuelsson has
discovered it all but hes still
searching. The world of food is
getting more and more varied,
Marcus explains.
Marcus can trace his own love
of food back to his Swedish
grandmother. Growing up,
MEN AT WORK
The percentage of families in which men help
out in the kitchen has risen from 27 to 67 in the
post-war period. And 60 percent of men now
cook regularly, spending an average 41 minutes
DGD\FRRNLQJ&DQLWDOOEHWKH-DPLHHIIHFW"
THE CUTTING EDGE
The language of food is getting
more diverse its good to be
part of the dialogue
Marcus
we did a lot of cooking together.
She was from Skne in the south
of Sweden so her cooking tended
to be very rich.
His journey has brought him full
circle as a new partnership sees
Marcus bringing his expertise to
IKEA kitchen tools, beginning with
the SLITBAR, GYNNSAM and IKEA
365+ knife ranges.
People often come up to me
and say, Oh, I had Swedish
food in IKEA. So I share
something with IKEA we both
have a love for Scandinavian style
and food. Today, travel and the
internet mean we are able to
discover a lot more. Japanese
food was unknown in the West
25 years ago, but now its much
more mainstream.
We are continually learning new
tastes, and as we learn, we want
to try new things in our kitchens.
Next issue, Marcus reveals the
best tools for smarter cooking.
THE ESSENTIAL
COLLECTION
There are certain knives every
family needs, says Marcus.
CHOOSING KNIVES
What to look for in a
good everyday knife for
your kitchen:
The steel is very important in
a knife and should be easy to
maintain, explains Marcus. Also,
a knife should be sturdy and feel
good in the hand. Check the tang
how far the blade goes back into
the handle. A full tang such as
in the SLITBAR and GYNNSAM
ranges offers the most stability.
USING KNIVES
Marcus tips for prolonging
the life of your knives:
Rub them on a sharpener before
every use to keep them in good
condition. And always hand wash
knives rather than putting them in
the dishwasher. I would advise
against keeping knives in a drawer
with other cutlery because every
time you open it up, the blades
get damaged. And of course, keep
knives out of childrens reach.

cooking go in store to

1. WHITE WASH
You might notice our MARKR
cabinet looks a bit different to the
usual dark wood version. Thats
because we love the cabinet and
its design, but for our home
we wanted something white
with a vintage look, so we

is interested in home furnishing.
3. BOX CLEVER
I was looking for a clever, sleek
way to deal with my recycling
waste and I came across TRONES.
Its supposed to be for shoes,
I know, but it also works for my
recycling. I have one box for each
type of rubbish stacked against
the wall, and when each one is
full, I take the box out to the
recycling station. Easy, and it
looks good in our kitchen.
Johan Arnmarke, Sweden
Great idea. But dont forget to
check out our new solutions for
recycling. And more new products
are coming soon.
4. PHOTO FINISH

our scarf holder weve made
it into a picture frame for photos
of our granddaughter. What
do you think?
Irene Wimberger, Austria
I love how youve found a
surprising way of using IKEA
products. I wonder if any readers
have an alternative use for the
