FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Praised be Jesus Christ! Many of you remember the assassination attempt of Pope John Paul II on May 13 th, 1981. Afterward, Pope John Paul II remarked that one finger pulled the trigger, one finger guided the bullet. Our late great Pope always believed that Mary protected him that day and thought it was more than merely a coincidence that he was shot on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. Ever since his Mom died when he was a little boy, John Paul had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. His filial devotion to the Mother of God grew even deeper when he read St. Louis de Montforts book True Devotion to Mary. St. Louis de Montfort was an itinerant preacher in France in the early 1700s. He believed that devotion to Mary was the quickest, surest, and safest way to become like Jesus Christ. Simply put, for Christians the goal is to become like Jesus Christ. St. Louis de Montfort taught that the recipe for achieving this would be analogous to how Jesus came into the world the first time, namely that the Holy Spirit overshadowed a humble virgin from Nazareth and the Word became flesh. St. Louis therefore believed that if we grow close to Mary and pray to her, then the Holy Spirit will recognize her in our heart and soul. And when the Holy Spirit sees Mary in us, He comes quickly and makes us more like Christ. Pope John Paul II believed and lived this too, and no one can doubt the spiritual progress he made in his lifetime. St. Louis believed that the devil would try to destroy his work because it had the potential to produce many saints. And wouldnt you know it, his book was lost for 140 years after St. Louis death before someone discovered it buried in an old trunk. Ever since it was rediscovered, countless souls have benefitted from St. Louis Total Consecration to Mary. It is a 33-day prayer (one day for each of the years Our Lord lived in this world) that helps us grow close to Mary and become more like Jesus. I made this consecration for the first time when I was in college and it helped me find my vocation in life. Every year with the high school seminarians we would pray these prayers and I know they helped each of us immeasurably. I hope youll consider making the consecration with us this year. Well begin on February 21st and end on March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation. I have 300 copies of the Total Consecration and they are available on a first come, first served basis. For those interested, I will use Saturday morning Masses to explain more fully this beautiful devotion. Mary, Mother of us all, pray for us! May God bless you and your family! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin St. John Catholic Book Club will meet again On Tuesday, February 28, 2012, when we will discuss My Grandfathers Son, A Memoir, by Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas. On March 27, 2012, we will share comments about Expecting Adam: A True Story of Birth, Rebirth, and Everyday Magic, by Martha Beck. On April 24, 2012, we will discuss Benedict of Bavaria, an intimate Portrait of the Pope and His Homeland, by Brennan C. Pursell. On May 22, 2012, we will discuss In The Land Of Invisible Women, by Qanta Ahmed.. Questions? Call Mari Bohman at 715-384-3919.
