It has been thirteen years already that Geocell is our network. Its communication services are used by over a million and a half subscribers. For thirteen years Geocell has been part of our life and over this time it has implemented numerous social, charitable, innovative and original projects. Last year, the company faced a challenge of making a radical decision. It had to change its visual and strategic image in such a way as to keep its old values and to present to the public a completely new Geocell. First and foremost, the new-look brand was to be acceptable for the customers. The rebranding was determined by membership of the Nordic telecommunication leader, TeliaSonera. It has been already a year now that Geocell has stepped into the purple world. As you know, in the modern epoch the function of the brand has seen a dramatic increase. Therefore, the process of rebranding in business is associated with risks. There were certain risks in case of Geocell too but as a result of the well-planned campaign the rebranding proved successful. The new-look Geocell proved acceptable and amiable to people. It has become simpler to identify the brand. Achieving this was not so easy for the Geocell team. One of the challenges in the rebranding process was a visual part the introduction of a new color and a new logo. Geocell designers together with a marketing and PR team worked hard to achieve this.

Maiko Kvirkvelia (Geocell designer): People liked Geocells old image and logo very much. Therefore, replacing a successful visual design with a new one was associated with a great risk. At this stage I can say for sure that the step made by Geocell proved successful. The rebranding of the company left its major value unchanged. At first, it was very difficult for me to get used to the new color. First of all, I started collecting information about this color including its psychological explanations. I wanted to see what impression this color would make on me. I got a SIM-card in the new color and immediately realized that the novelty would be a success. I fell in love with purple very soon. It turned out a very warm and deep color, but a very difficult one to work with. Unlike the old concept, the graphic works in the new-look brand are reduced to minimum. We work on the photos, which stress emotions and original expressions of relationship. This is also very interesting because selecting image photos is a new stage for me. Boka Neparidze (Geocell designer): When TeliaSonera required the rebranding of the communication operators under its holding, I welcomed this news. It is good when a company undergoes certain changes, especially when a totally new color is introduced on the market. The entire marketing team worked fast, in a quality manner and, what is important, in a proper way. A new strategy laid out how the new image would be established on the market and in the minds of people gradually. People view Geocell as a company dear to them. Demna Japaridze (Production and Promotion Director of Rustavi 2): Geocell and Rustavi 2 TV have cooperated in several projects. These are: Geocell Lottery, Geobar, Geostar and the new Georgias Got Talent. Geocell agreed to become a partner of Georgias Got Talent immediately after seeing the trial castings and without even knowing how successful the project would be. This was a pure confidence in the Rustavi 2 TV team. What makes Geocell distinguished from others is that they are always innovators; they cherish relationships and think of integrating Geocells name into different projects. The new-look Geocell is totally acceptable for me. The new color is very nice and original. I think it is difficult to speak about the result of the rebranding yet as not much time has passed, but I always underline one thing, which is that people at Geocell know exactly what they are up to. They are exemplary in terms of advertising campaign. They managed to rebrand, to change the color and the logo so that the name Geocell is catching the eye more than anything else. They know exactly in which parts of the city they should put up their advertising banners and where they would be most eye-catching. Even their office locations are strategically selected and this is the proper PR and planning. Geocell has paved its own way.

of buying our products. This is determined by the proper perception of the brand. As a client and as a specialist who has an experience in rebranding, I think that the new-look Geocell brand was timely and needed. I know that TeliaSonera made a global rebranding of its companies but, in case of Geocell, I think this change was really beneficial. I wont hide that at first, the new image of Geocell seemed strange and foreign to me; perhaps, because there was no brand with this color on the market before. On the other hand, it had a coloring of a female romanticism and provoked associations with a perfume firm. But I want to emphasize that the rebranding campaign was very well-planned and that helped the company to effectively establish a new brand on the market and to make it likable. I liked the communication campaign carried out by the marketing department, because it was quite complex and integrated. I have even noticed that when I see purple on the invitation I immediately think that it is from Geocell, although it may be from another company.

Misha Giorgadze (Director General of Eastern Promotion): The relationship between Eastern Promotion and Geocell started in 2000 when our company established a festival tradition in Tbilisi. This is quite a good example of a successful cooperation that has covered concerts and shows including the Tbilisi Jazz Festival and the Black Sea Jazz Festival, which we initiated three years ago. We greatly appreciate the confidence that the company has reposed in us. Our relationship has been developing over the time. When a company decides to rebrand itself, it is a risk. But in case of Geocell this risk resulted in success. I think the new-look Geocell has become more interesting and even entertaining. Besides pure informative material, the advertising campaign should have something else positive with it, at least at the mood level. That is why I think that this whole process was a success. It is difficult to put it in words but one of the components that catches my mind in the new-look Geocell is a certain positive attitude that has a good effect on my mood as well. I have a feeling that I am dealing with a company that knows what it wants, what its customers want and what is needed to deliver messages to the customers easily and clearly. The new logo of Geocell is much more acceptable than its previous red ball was. As a result of the rebranding, the scene visual of the jazz festival has also changed. What Geocell needed as a company in order to be heavily presented on the jazz festival, was achieved. On our side we showed that we have a backing of such a strong company. Thus, our cooperation was fruitful and successful for the both sides. Both sides get in this cooperation what they need. I am saying it very frankly and not for the sake of compliments.

These days, honing an accurate public understanding of a modern brands corporate culture would be impossible without a comprehensive review of the businesss corporate design. Thats why leading companies do their best to formulate a corporate strategy that will later become the defining factor of their corporate image. This method has become a general precondition for a companys successful development and is seen to be the most important part of a products gaining a unique position in the consumers mind. Geocell the leading mobile communications operator in Georgia is distinguished for its clearly expressed corporate style. It is enough to mention the name of this brand for a certain chain of visual images to emerge in our minds: the natural purple stone logo; service centers designed in a unique style... In fact, Geocell offers a vivid example of how a brands corporate image can become widely recognizable. Throughout its existence Geocell has made changes to its corporate image several times. Last year it carried out a radical re-branding campaign and presented a new face to the public. The logo, the color and other attributes of the company have been changed. What has remained unchanged are the name and values of the company. The initiator of Geocells re-branding was the Finish-Swedish telecommunications giant TeliaSonera which unites a number of successful mobile operators in different regions of the world. One of the key components of a companys corporate design is the style and design of its service centers. Service centers are the things that demonstrate an organizations corporate image and the specificity of its activities. Geocell re-arranged and refurbished all of its service centers and offices according to a new set of corporate attributes and standards. Every detail is taken into consideration: coloring, lights, accessories and other interior components that underline the companys individuality. The Geocell office is not just a unity of functional and material traits, but the new interior includes all the components of visual design that create the needed positive emotional atmosphere. The new office design has been enriched with the elements of nature, which, together with the brands new color, create a pleasant and comfortable environment. Instead of conventional graphics, the walls of the new office are covered with photos featuring familiar faces and topics in turn uniting traditional and modern, elegant and practical. Besides, the interior is arranged so as to facilitate the interactive communication between the customer and the service personnel. Geocells re-branding campaign, including the development of its new office, design was implemented by Landor Associates, which is one of the worlds leading consulting companies in the field of strategic brand management and design. Landor was founded in San Francisco in 1941 by Walter Landor, a young designer of German origin. The company was one of the first in the world to prove that design is an important tool for making a brand successful. Clear examples of this is the work created by Walter Landor himself for famous brands.

Addy Walcott: The interior design concept was to move Geocell away from the institutional look and feel often associated with cell phone providers to a style and approach that takes its cues from retail. The shift in the consumers mind should be something like going from an office to a shop. As a result, the space provides a more invigorated customer experience which enlivens the brands promise. Geocells offer is now better communicated through the integrated display band and add-on services. - What is the key element of the Geocell office design that highlights the companys corporate image most strongly? A. W.: The main element that forms the corporate look is the use of material. The color purple is the most distinctive aspect, especially as it is not often used in the cellular retail landscape. The combination that creates this look is simple: a grey tile floor, clay colored walls, purple feature walls, and the use of white and timber for all customer touch points, display

and communication. - What style or mix of styles can we attribute to the design of the Geocell office? A. W.: Geocell belongs to no particular design trend. We at Landor dont believe in simply following the ever-changing fashions of the design world. Instead we try to place our solutions under the rationale of a clear strategy and positioning that creates difference and longevity for the brand. - How successful was the attempted harmonious amalgamation of local, cultural, psychological and other factors with international standards? A. W.: The Geocell design does have a basis in the conventions found in contemporary cellular retail environments through its modulation and display touch points. However there is built-in updateability for reflection of the local market and following style trends through 2D media. The local always comes alive in the media and communication. All the in-shop advertising and 2D collaterals are produced locally and with Georgian landscapes, Georgian faces and voices all talking the Georgian language. In the environment the clearest demonstration of this is the super graphic from the launch campaign of a Georgian field in bloom and integrated digital display. The synthesis of Geocells strife for constant innovation and the effective design decisions of Landor have proved to be a powerful corporate instrument. Geocells corporate style has introduced a very effective novelty on the local market that will remain topical for a long time to come.

Now, we are here too in the green office of radio Green Wave. Do you know the best way to follow current events as they unfold? How to always be up to date and not miss a single important piece of news? In fact, its very easy. All you need to do is dial the magic number 700-500 and you will be able to hear our latest news bulletin exclusively on your mobile phone. The information is updated every 20 minutes. Three years ago, Geocell and Green Wave decided to take on a project that had never before been attempted in Georgia: to create a special news bulletin for mobile phone users, specially Geocell and Lai-Lai subscribers. The idea is that if you do not have enough time to read a newspaper, watch the news on TV, listen to the radio, or log on to the internet, you can dial a special number on your mobile phone and immediately hear an accurate, up-to-the-minute news bulletin prepared for you by Ana Sidamonidze or Eka Gaprindashvili. Im in the studio and in fact they are getting ready to record another bulletin right now. I lean on the wall of the recording studio, hoping that I wont cough or drop my notebook. Ana puts on her headphones and starts reading the text. She records the important segments of hourly news in separate messages with small pauses between them. On the other side of the glass window the audio editor Giorgi Amiridze records her voice and fills these pauses with special music. One more minute and the news bulletin is completely edited and ready to be presented to the public. Treasury that needs to be rediscovered

I should start with a small revelation: in most of the subjects at school I had ok grades but there were a couple in which I got very high grades to make my grandma happy. Such was history. I was told all the time that history was like a fairy tale and all I had to remember were the dates and the rest, and if I imagined properly, I would remember naturally. So, it is a fact that I have always had a good imagination and I never had problems with telling stories emotionally. In short, I was quite good in history (or fairytale narration). How much I worried about the stories in my history book and how well I heard the cry of the nation tired of all kinds of invasions is another thing. The fact is that once (I was 14 or so) I happened to be in the Ikalto Monastery. While I was there I did not pay much attention to the guide who told us about the monastery complex and its role in Georgian history. The only thing that was important for me at that moment was finding a photo angle so that grass, a piece of the church and my new white sports shoes would all fit in. Well, I told you I was only 14. I remembered this sad page from my childhod after I mentioned Ikalto the project of the century started by Geocell in the spring of 2008. The aim of the project is not just the physical rehabilitation of this cultural-educational center but a revival of its meaning and function. Although Geocell has carried out a number of charity and social projects, it has never taken on anything as grandiose as the rehabilitation of Ikalto, which unites not only the company team, but also 2 million people along with them.

Several familiar facts from history

In the 6th century, a group of clergymen came to Georgia from Syria who people called Assyrian fathers. Their objective was to protect and strengthen the Christian religion. They spread out across different parts of Georgia and built a number of monasteries. This helped to spread the religion and to strengthen the Christian faith among local people. The Assyrian Fathers included such luminaries as Shio Mgvimeli, Anton Martkopeli, Tadeoz Stepantsmindeli and Zenon Ikaltoeli. The latter is the one who conceived of and built the Ikalto Monastery 7-8 kilometers from Telavi, in the Kakheti Region of Eastern Georgia. Later on Arsen Ikaltoeli established a school-academy on the territory of the monastery complex where, the students studied religion, rhetoric, astronomy, philosophy, geography, geometry, singing, and so on. It is known that apart from their academic training the students also learned metallurgy, ceramics, wine-making, pharmacology and many other interesting subjects. This place was a center of learning which had no equal in all of Georgia and was a recognized cultural-educational center. After it was burnt down by the army of Shah Abas in 1616, the Ikalto Academy stopped functioning.

churches located on the territory of the complex (Sameba, Peristsvalebis Ghvtaeba and Kovladtsminda) have been rehabilitated several times, time has taken its toll and brought quite a damage to the complex. I do not know if this job, now known as the project of the century would have started at all if it hadnt been for the Geocell team that visited Ikalto on a tourist trip. When they saw the problems which existed at the site which threatened the entire monastery complex, it was decided that something needed to be done urgently to save this unique monument. With the blessing of David, the Metropolitan of Alaverdi, and the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Monument Protection, Geocell started this very difficult job which the restoration-rehabilitation of the Ikalto Monastery Complex. The rehabilitation work was preceded by excavations during which archeologists worked for several months to uncover the secrets of this monument. The main goal of the excavations was to reveal the infrastructure of this historical monument and to study the architectural shapes of the separate buildings of Ikalto so that the restoration work would be carried out properly.The excavations were successful and important discoveries revealed facts about the complex that had been unknown until now: 1. According to the archaeological discoveries, the Academy located in the monastery complex is dated to the 14th-15th centuries. This discovery has questioned the famous fact that Shota Rustaveli was working in this Academy. 2. The discovery of the graves belonging to Arsen and Zenon Ikaltoeli is considered to be one of the most important discoveries. Paata Nutsubidze, architect-restorer of the Georgian Patriarchate, said that this is a unique discovery the discovery of the graves of two Saints simultaneously. Reportedly, Georgian Patriarch Ilia II plans to arrive in the near future to hold a solemn opening of the graves. 3. Among the things that were discovered were walls built with cobblestones and two tombs with roofs that still bore the marks of treasure hunters. 4. It became known that the Church of Kovladtsminda was covered with one meter beneath the earth, and after it was removed we were presented with quite a tall and different-looking church. 5.The household items found here give an idea about what life was like in Ikalto. 6. coins was found in which the earliest coin is an anonymous Mongolian coin marked Jaanuri I (1261-64) while the other 11 are Ilkhanic and were made in the reign of Abu Said (1317-35). It has been proven that a portion of these coines were minted in Tbilisi. 7. At this stage the temple with the domical roof, which is in the gravest situation, is being renovated. A reinforced concrete pillow was placed in the foundation deep into 1,5 meters that has saved the temple from demolition. 8. The dome was roofed with Spanish-produced natural clay tile, which visually creates an effect of oldness; the remained roofing works are still underway. 9. The faade of the temple was cleaned from lime cover. It was whitened by Russians (like other Georgian temples) in the 18-19 centuries, when the Church in Georgia was absorbed into the Synod Church of Russia, ending autocephaly for the Georgian church. The cleaning works have completely changed the temples architecture. Its old, classical, Kakhetian architecture has appeared: combined cobble-stone and brick, ornamented and decorated Georgian brick. The next stage of restoration envisages hiding of existing dents, cracks and other flaws by smoothing the walls. The flooring works are also planned. Much is still to be done to ensure that the complex starts working at its full capacity. However, scaffolding will soon be removed and the liturgy will be resumed. Considering the planned works, the renovated temple will probably open this year and receive the parish quite soon. And finally I will not continue to list all the discoveries made in Ikalto, maybe you are already tired with these details. I mentioned above that, for Geocell, the physical reconstruction-repair of churches was not the main goal. The key objective is to make Ikalto a cultural center again. In autumn 2009, Geocell held a literary contest for students in the Ikalto Monastery Complex. Although it was a modest one-day event, what better place could be found for students to take their first steps in writing?!

All the employees of Rustavi 2 have Geocell numbers and I have a BlackBerry phone from Geocell, which I use all the time. It was the next-to-last day of the final casting session and we were almost done with selecting the participants for Georgias Got Talent when I received an email on my BlackBerry. I was in the Opera House and if it hadnt been for BlackBerry I would not have read that email until I had returned to the office. The email was from a Georgian fan of Michael Jackson who did an imitation of the King of Pop and sent me photos in which he was playing in a costumed show. I dont like arrogant girls. I like tender women. But also, the more unapproachable, the more desirable they are. I like honest and kind people. Most of all I love my mother and singing. This is probably how this article would have started if our goal was to introduce people unknown to the reader or if we were collecting data for a music encyclopedia (and, I hope that time comes as well!). But in this interview you will not find much statistical data. Their names and vocal skills are well known to the public. Besides the fact that both of them are already famous singers, there is one thing that makes them stand out from their colleagues: both are Geostar winners. Giorgi Sukhitashvili won the singing contest in 2008 while Nodiko Tatishvili did the same in 2009.

What has Geostar changed in your life? Nodiko: Nothing much. Now I am fully focused on my work. I do not have time left for a personal life. This is how I am when I work, everything else becomes of secondary importance to me. Salome Bakuradze who was one of the participants is my best friend. In the same contest together with her was this crazy friend of mine (Giorgi Sukhitashvili) I was split in two: one day I sat among the supporters of Salome and was worried that Giorgi would be upset and the next day I sat among Giorgis fans worrying about not making Salome upset. Tamuna and Nini Tsiklauri are also my friends. Every Sunday I nearly died of worry. All of my friends were eliminated one after the another but in the finals I did not worry at all: both participants were winners for me. Describe Nodiko in three words Giorgi: Star from Gldani! Nodiko: Why didnt you let me speak first? Now mine will sound like a copy: Most talented villager! What is your style of singing? Giorgi: Generally it is difficult to speak about style in Georgia. If you choose one style, you will not succeed. So, I prefer being the socalled everyman singer. I think Nodiko is a pop singer he sings popular songs in every genre. Nodiko: I agree. Giorgi: By the way, we have never discussed this topic. Nodiko: I feel myself particularly comfortable in several genres. Giorgi: I think no. The only thing that makes us different is our place of residence. Nodiko: True, I have the mentality of city dweller and you have a mentality of villager. Giorgi: Plus, I am from Kartli and therefore more honest and nave. Nodiko: I am from Kartli as well, by the way. Giorgi: And also punctual! I am never late. Once I made it from my village (Karaleti) to Tbilisi in 32 minutes. The most memorable day from Geostar Giorgi: On the eighth was a Geostar casting in Gori and on the seventh the war started. I have not shaved ever since. This story may not fit in with the mood of our interview but it was this day that was most memorable for me from the Geostar period. I mourned over each person who died and I was ashamed as my house was left untouched when about 40 houses in our village were burnt Many later concluded that my victory was determined by the fact that I was from Gori. Nodiko: Gio, wanted to take part in Geostar much earlier than the war happened. Giorgi: At first, I was very depressed to hear such talk but then I acquired a stimulus to prove to everyone that I could do it. I think I did

it. At least people from where I come from contact me even today and are happy for every step forward I make. I think the most memorable days from Geostar were the initial days. Then everything continued in a usual way. Every next appearance on stage was just another opportunity for me to say what I had to say to the public. As for the victory, I could not express my emotion, I just smiled. Well, I just could not fake emotion. I have graduated from the Theatrical Institute and acting is my profession but in real life I cannot do it and I dont want to do it. Geostar is a certain show with sharply distinguished heroes. This is at least what can be seen from the outside. You know Geostar both from the inside and the outside. What did you expect before going there and what did you find backstage? Nodiko: I found exactly what I expected to find. I knew that I would worry, I would be happy and that SMS-es would decide our fate. Plus, I am a maximalist and all these feelings were particularly strong in me. At the end of every concert my blood pressure went up and I though I was going to die. Giorgi: In the final round of Nodikos contest Vazha was leading until the final seconds. But I was still sure that Nodiko would win. You want to know why? Until the last moment he was never in first place. I was 7-8 times among the outsiders and Nodiko was there 4-5 times. I was never in first place. But you know what happens then? People start reacting. We Georgians are like that: if we feel sympathy towards someone, automatically we are in opposition of the other candidate. This is what happened in Nodikos case as well: a lot of people started to send SMS-es and tipped the balance in Nodikos favor. Vazha is my friend. We work together and I do not say it to upset him, but Nodiko is a singer with a broader range whereas Vazha sticks to a more specific genre. In this case, Nodikos experience, his multi-genre talent won him the peoples sympathy. You have to hit the point and Nodiko did it. Nodiko: The most important thing in this contest is to leave it all on the stage, to do everything you can do. This was the most important thing for me. Giorgi: The difference between Nodiko and I was that I did not worry. It did not matter for me when I would leave the contest. My biggest wish was to be in 4-5 concerts at least and to acquire the experience of singing with the band. Geostar gave me that experience. It was the greatest happiness. My childhood dream has come true. You know, everyone has a dream in childhood and it happens often that you grow up and go in a completely different direction. In my case, this did not happen and I am a singer now. So I have to think of a new dream. (smiles) My favorite concert was the last one. Of course, somewhere deep in my heart I wanted to win in the contest but more than that I wanted to be fair. I knew that the only way that I could have been kicked out was related to the number of votes I received and not a badly performed song. Nodiko: I completely agree. Contestants receive SMS-es for different reasons. I have often heard: I sent him/her an SMS because he/she is so good-looking because he/she sings so well because he/she is so cute For me, of course, the assessment of my performance is the most valuable. they saw that I was a good singer or they liked me Anyway, all of this was my fault. It is a fact that personal sympathy means a lot. You have to understand music well in order to assess the singer as a singer. Of course, not every listener can do it. Giorgi: You may not have a very musical ear but you may compensate for that by being smart. You can even get the jury to pardon a wrong note if avoid irritating the listener. There were moments when I forgot lyrics during the Geostar concerts. Were human: things like that happen. But I managed to replace the lyrics I forgot with new ones in such a way that nobody realized they were just invented. But the evaluation of the jury is mostly focused on the musical abilities of participants. I can put it very simply: I listen to all kinds of music; there was a period when I even listened to experimental music. You know what that is? Somebody poured ink on their hand, then rubbed it onto paper and wrote some musical notes. Then he played them. I listened to such a composition that lasted a full 18 minutes. Finally my dad rushed into my room and told me to turn it off before I went crazy. But I am interested in everything and thats why I try all these different trends. After that I listened to hard rock for quite a long time. Not because I am a fan of Marilyn Manson, but because this is my profession and I have to know it. You never know when you may need it. When I studied in the Theatrical Institute I studied the epoch, the lifestyle and the psychological type of my character. The same works for songs. I have never sung a foreign song without translating the lyrics. I have to know what I am singing about, dont I? Many people can sing well but you have to show your unique and versatile talent. This is your only chance of distinguishing yourself from others. Nodiko: True, it is necessary to show your individuality to the audience on the stage. It must be loaded but not artificial. Giorgi: You should not perform according to the principle of I can do that too. Nodiko: You have to be honest and sincere. As soon as you try to cheat, you will have problems developing into a professional singer. That was my main objective to show my best on the stage, not to get any specific remark form the jury. I have the ambition of being a singer. I always welcome advice but I dont like criticism. Well, I mean I dont want to deserve criticism and I do everything to avoid it. You are called the Geocell children. Geocell made the project, you became famous. What happens next? Nodiko: Nothing happens next, if you dont want it to. Geocell supports you if it sees that you have an initiative. Giorgi: You have to have enthusiasm. I am angry when I see someone sitting with his legs crossed and whining. You may not have money, you may have problems but what is most important is the fire in your eyes. Those who know the meaning of such eyes, will understand you by all means. You may be less talented but your motivation will move you and get you to do the job. Luckily, I dont have to complain. I took a pause and now I am working on an album. If I started it right after the end of Geostar, I would not have made it. All this requires a lot of effort and experience. This album will not be for commercial purposes but for the purpose of music itself. I may offend someone with these words but I prefer to work on quality and to sell fewer copies and hold on to my reputation as a musician. As for Geocells role in my career, Geocell and I are very good friends. It helped me start working on the new album. But we all have

to understand well that Geocell is not a production company! It has put us on TV screens for three months and made a huge PR success of you, what else does it have to do? I am 24 year old and I need to act now. When I am over certain age, I will start evaluating others myself. But now I have to act and to create until I dont have any obstacles. I cannot wait for the situation to improve in Georgia. We are needed now for those listeners who cheered for us and who liked us. Otherwise, our colors will fade. Then new singers will come and we wont be topical any more. To surf you need a big wave, which we have to create ourselves. And what do you do to make that happen? Nodiko: Giorgi said that some singers sit without a job and whine I had such a period when I virtually sat at home all day. I have been in many contests, especially before the crisis. I was satisfying my musical demands but then the crisis happened and the contests stopped. This is equal to tragedy for me: you want to do something but you cant! Giorgi: Remove that sadness from your eyes. Nodiko: Then there was Geostar! Now I want to make an album

that I will record with the help of Geocell. From Rustavi 2 I received a promo video. So I have work to do everyday and I have a zeal to do all that. After Geostar big prospects have emerged in my life and if I complain I would be ungrateful. The creators of this project have already done a lot of things to me and I know that they will do more. And all this is because I want so. I really want Nodiko Tatishvili to establish himself as a singer. How well are you prepared for experiments? Giorgi: Because I am an actor by profession, I am ready for any experiments. For example, I can shave my head and break my teeth right away if it is necessary for the job. My album will be totally different from what I was on Geostar. It will not be Giorgi Sukhitashvili as the audience knew him before. What is Giorgi Sukhitashvili like in peoples minds? Giorgi: People know that I sing cover versions of famous songs. My new album will have nothing like this. The idea came from the tour which was done by the band The Shin. This tour gave me a lot. Giorgi: My role as the role of a singer in this process is very concrete: I am an export product that has to do its job which is to sing well. Popularization is somebody elses task. Nodiko: Lets leave marketing and commercial calculations Giorgi: Why? Nodiko: I will tell you why. I can sing a very good pop song which at first glance is meant for a larger audience. But in fact, it may not turn out that way at all. That is why I will make my album so that I feel comfortable with it. My mood will then transfer to my audience. Giorgi: Nobody believes in singing with glass eyes Nodiko: Having only technique will not help. What kind of audience do you think is your audience? Nodiko: I do not want to be a popular singer for only teenagers. But I also dont want to be popular only among those over 40. I want to create music that will be listened to by wide spectrum of people. I know that I will have to work hard and to think hard but my goal is to make people love Nodiko Tatishvilis work at the age of 18 and at the age of 58 as well. A singer has to be a peoples singer Giorgi: How ambitious this guy is Nodiko: However, at some point I may choose a more specific genre Giorgi: Ok now, let me put in a word too Nodiko: In the end, Nodiko Tatishvili has to be a peoples singer. Giorgi: There is Maeterlincks The Blue Bird that is considered a fairy tale. However, it is not just a fairy tale: children go to find some kind of a blue bird, which in fact it is a symbol of truth. This story for me is the best example of how one can maintain the balance between a child and an older person. It may not be doable in one project, I mean for Georgia. But if it is not liked in Georgia, I will go somewhere else. I feel most comfortable with jazz, which does not have a wide audience in Georgia. Over time I will see how in demand I am and then I will make my decision. I cannot do things that I dont like only to earn money. To this I prefer office work. I dont want my work to be recognized 200 years from now like Mendelssohns! I dont want people to listen to my records and say: oh, how good this late guy was(smiles) Does your musical image transfer to your everyday life? Giorgi: Of course, it does. For example, I walk with a barrel hat on me. Nothing special but it makes me look different Nodiko: As one of those who does not wear a barrel hat, a couple of hairs left above the upper lip also a sign of being a special type for this guy. Giorgi: I have had this for nine years. I have my own whims and one of them is football. I am a great football fan on the club level I cheer for Dinamo Tbilisi and on the national level, of course, I support our national team. Then comes Germany and Bayern. Nodiko: I am not interested in football. Giorgi: You are a mongrel. Nodiko: In my family all the men are diehard football fans, therefore I am more or less aware of football but I myself dont like it. As for my style of dress, I prefer freestyle (casual) dressing in everyday life but for a concert I prepare differently you should show respect to the audience with your visual side as well. In general, I think that singing is one of the most difficult professions. Many think it is just entertainment. I have been seriously engaged in this business for the past couple of years and I have come to appreciate all those singers who do not spare effort to achieve their goals. If you do not worry before going on the stage, you will not achieve anything Giorgi: I dont worry a bit Nodiko: If you are nervous on the stage, you wont be able to use half of your abilities but worrying is something different.

Georgias Got Talent the most ambitious show yet

Everybody who thinks that he/she is talented meaning that they can sing or dance well, perform a pass, make cigarette smoke come out of their ears, and so on, was invited to participate in a massive new show on Rustavi 2. It took the projects initiators a long time to decide whetheror-not to make such a show in Georgia was worth it and whether our society was emancipated enough to take part in this project. The results have exceeded all expectations. The number of the people who came to participate in the casting process, which took place in 24 towns throughout Georgia, was more than the initiators of the project had anticipated. It turns out that we have plenty of modest, talented people; enough very ambitious talented people; and also some people who wrongly consider themselves to be talented. The format of the show is such that it is not limited to revealing talented people only, it is also an entertainment which is enjoyed by the participants as well as the viewer.

It is noteworthy that Georgias Got Talent is the only contest show in Georgia where there are no age limitations and where a live audience attends castings. A few things from the history of the show Georgias Got Talent is analogous to the British Got Talent franchise, which was developed by Simon Cowells company SIYO. Today, the show is running in over 30 countries. The project has turned out to be quite successful in certain small Eastern European countries and this was one of the reasons that Georgian producers decided to implement the show in Georgia. From February 2010 Georgia joined the list of Got Talent countries when Georgias Got Talent kicked off. Geocell was quick to see the positive sides of the show and decided to partner-up with it. As you know, Geocell has a certain amount of experience in finding talented people: for several years it has successfully carried out the musical contest Geostar. Georgias Got Talent is different in that it allows any talent to be presented on the show, without any age limitation. The youngest participant on Georgias Got Talent is 3 years old while the oldest is 86. In total, about 7,000 talented (and talented) people took part in the qualification rounds. The show consists of four stages. In the first tour, a participant presents his/her talent to the jury and the audience. During the performance of this or that participant the jury members can express their dissatisfaction by pressing a red button. In this case the image of X in front of them is lit in red. There are three jury members and if all three of them press the red button, the participant has to stop. The jury assesses the performance of a participant with Yes or No. In order to qualify for the next round, a participant needs to receive at least two Yes votes. The jury is comprised of: Nika Memanishvili, Head of the National Music Center; Maya Asatiani, a TV show host; and Gega Palavandishvili, Programs Manager. The merriest hosts of Georgias Got Talent are Tika Patsatsia and Vaniko Tarkhnishvili who watch the show from behind the scenes. After the end of the first tour the jury gathers to make final decisions and to once again review the contestants who have successfully qualified for the next stage. They inform the participants about their final decision, which means the participants can go to the semi-final. The third stage or the semi-final which consists of five performance concerts is broadcast live. From each semi-final concert two participants will qualify for the final. One is the performer who gets the most votes during the contest and the other is selected by the jury. And finally there is the final where the fates of ten contestants is fully in the hands of the viewers. The winner of Georgias Got Talent who will receive an apartment in the Dream Town residential complex located in a prestigious district of Tbilisi will be the one who gets the most votes. Together with the participants it is the jury, the show hosts and the entire project team who create the show. The team members do a lot of hard work and therefore they have allowed themselves to gather in the club Cache on Mondays

Giorgi Khaburdzania (producer of Georgias Got Talent): First it was two years ago that Demna Japaridze and I saw an American, not British, version of the show. We liked it so much that we thought it would be good to make a similar project in Georgia. First we were not sure if such a massive and ambitious show would be a success and we did not really go for it. Then when we saw this show becoming successful in so many countries, we thought Why not? but we were still unable to make the final decision. Because of this uncertainty we held an experimental casting in 24

towns across Georgia. We wanted to see whether Georgia actually had as many, willing multi-talented people as we needed. We went to places where no TV program castings had ever been held before. We went to Tsageri, Svaneti and other high mountain places. The trials showed that there was a resource for the preparation of our program. We prepared an amateur video, showed it to several potential sponsors and Geocell gave us its support immediately. I dont like the word massive but really no show of this scale has ever been done in Georgia. This is the show that 3 or 4 people alone cannot do. An experienced and well coordinated television team is needed for it. When we were planning the show, we were afraid that we would not have enough material for six shows but it turned out that six shows are not enough for even 40% of the material weve

got. That is why we choose the best. First, people did not know why they were going to castings, so we had to attract people. About 20-25% of the participants came to castings thanks to our efforts. Maya Asatiani (jury member): On the internet I used to follow the most original performances of Britains Got Talent. When Giorgi Khaburdzania and Demna Japaridze offered me a place on the jury, I agreed at once. Ever since, Ive watched this show not as an ordinary viewer but as one of its participants. I think the jury of this show is also a participant as the emotions of the jury members contribute to creating a viewer-oriented show. It is better for the viewer to evaluate how well we have done. I am considered the most emotional jury member and I was told not to limit myself in expressing my emotions. I was told to simply be the person I am in real life. Whatever emotion you can see on your screen is spontaneous. As a journalist I was surprised that our society seems to be so free of complexes. For example, a woman living in a high mountain community with a husband, grown-up children and the leader of her own small household, suddenly decided to radically change her life and step up in front of a large audience. This is something that requires quite a lot of courage and it was a big discovery for me. Some, for example, consider themselves stars There were many participants who were very interesting to me as to a journalist. Well, I am probably on the jury because I am a journalist. Gega Palavandishvili (jury member): For us it is easy to choose the best out of so many participants because this project is prepared by very professional people. We have a very good camera team. Everything is arranged and organized well and therefore it is easy to evaluate and make decisions. I myself was looking for the third member of the jury but the producers decided to make me a jury member because I work for the marketing side of Rustavi 2. The show is created by the producer who follows the format. The jury does its part of the work, as do the show hosts standing behind the scene and the team-members working elsewhere. All this is then edited and put together. One genius is the editor. If not for these people, the show would not have been so good. The most work is done by the people who actually selected the participants for the show. As almost everywhere in Georgia there are musically talented people. Nika was invited to the jury. Maya has great experience doing TV work and I am the one who is thinking of selling all this. This is how the jury was formed. Nika Memanishvili (jury member): Despite the fact that I have experience working in a jury, I have to say that my responsibility here is exactly as big as the other contests. There were two reasons why I revised by everyday schedule and agreed to be a jury member: one is that I have a blind trust in the people who offered this to me, and the other is the people who are on the jury together with me (Maya and Gega). Besides, I have had a positive attitude towards this

project because of the discoveries that the British version of the show has made in recent years. After I saw the show, I liked it. I did not think that the show during the castings would turn out as well as it has. The public is diverse everywhere and in this show as well. In this regard, I was not surprised. Tika Patsatsia (show host): This project was new for the Georgian television space and I have not been an active follower of similar foreign projects. I have, however, watched some of the most interesting performances of this show abroad. I think it is an effective project. When I was offered the job of show host I became more closely familiar with the project and I immediately knew that it would be a popular peoples project. This was one of the reasons why I

took this job. The hosts on this show create a mood. I have made a lot of discoveries and seen many surprises. I would never have imagined that a person over 80 would decide to participate in the show. This is the charm of the project that people of any age and any talent can try their luck in the project. It was quite a surprise for me that many Georgians are so open. I think if Georgias Got Talent continues next year, it will receive more applications. We work behind the scenes and this place is the inner kitchen of the show. It is here that the participants leave their emotions and go out on the stage completely different. We are witnesses and sharers of their emotions and joy. Vaniko Tarkhnishvili (show host): I have seen the foreign version of this project. On many issues my ideas and the

ideas of the authors of the show coincided and probably this is why they decided to hire me. It is an interesting project. I was happy to see that there are so many talented people in Georgia. Everything on the show happens spontaneously and all the emotions are real. One of the projects unique sides is that I meet each participant before he/she goes out to the stage. The border between the stage and the auditorium for us is backstage where we are both the viewers and the fans of the participants. Everything happens together with us and we worry along with the participants. I think the audience does not get as nervous as we do. It is a completely real and live process and we express our emotions from the energy we receive in real situations. It really doesnt matter in which country the show was created. The fact is that the Georgian version of the show

aroused a great deal of interest even before it was shown on TV and discussions about it are still very topical. If it wasnt for Georgias Got Talent, Georgia would never have discovered the unique skills of Gulnazi Goletiani and her life would not have changed so radically; the oldest participant of the show Givi Gvelesiani would not have turned one ordinary day into a completely extraordinary one and fulfill his wish of performing in front of a large audience; and we would not have met the ambitious young man from Rustavi who, as he put it, is blocked in his own city. We would not have learned that there is a pitbox performer (Guga Chkonia) in Georgia who can make the sounds of several different instruments simultaneously with his mouth. In short, we would not have witnessed many things. And the most interesting part of the show is still to come.

I have already told you about the project. You can watch the shows yourself. So whats left? To meet some of the participants more closely. I was able to catch them when the second round of the contest was recorded. Like the jury of Georgias Got Talent (and perhaps many of you), I could not have imagined that the performance of Gulnazi Goletiani would be so impressive. It is really not easy to imagine that a woman who lives high in the mountains, has a husband and three children and works in her own household, would find time for singing and what a voice! Even the most jaded jury member in the field of music Nika Memanishvili could hardly hold back his tears. He later admitted that when listening to her, he wanted to cry. Gulnazi Goletiani was baptized the Georgian Susan Boyle (in reference to the sensational singing discovery made on Britains Got Talent) but unlike Gulnazi, Susan used to sing in a club in her childhood and has even recorded a CD. The Georgian had never before stood on a big stage and had no musical career whatsoever. She has lived a difficult life and came to the show all the way from Tsageri at the persistent request of her children. She does not regret a bit of her decision. Gulnazi Goletiani: Deep in my heart I wanted to participate in the show but I was scared to do so because of my age. I did not know what would happen and I did not want to leave the show in disgrace and humiliation. But my children and friends insisted and I made the step. The three minutes that I was on the stage completely changed my life and I thank God for that. Gulnazis talent was discovered by her teachers at school. She sang in school choirs and then started working in a culture house where she had a miserable salary. She has never attended singing lessons and prepared for the show herself. The talent that she has is literally a gift of nature. I had quite a hard childhood. My one of my brothers died when he was 18 and my other brother died at the age of 28. A few years later my mom passed away and I was left alone together with my fatherYou know that Tsageri is in the mountains and the living conditions there are harsh. Our everyday life is full of hard labor. It has not been easy to raise three children in such conditions, especially because our family does not possess a lot of material wealth But despite all that I will spare no effort to say my piece through my singing. When I came out onto the stage of Georgias Got Talent I was focused on singing. When I started singing it all came from my heart. That my performance would make such a noise I had really no idea but somewhere in my heart I believed in myself and I knew that something would come out of my effort. That moment changed everything. unfamiliar people rushed up and kissed and hugged me. What can be a greater happiness than to win peoples love? For most it requires many years of hard work and practice and for me this joy came after just one song. All of you probably remember the performance of Mariam Kakhelishvili. Now, imagine that at one prestigious music contest she was told that she had no voice and was kicked out. This fact caused the little girl to fall into a great depression. She locked herself in the house and spent days crying. Finally, she overcame her depression with the help of a teacher who gave her singing lessons at Mariams house. This is how she regained her wish to sing. Now she is 14 years old. She has been singing since she was three and has participated in many music contests. The first one was Geostar but because of the format of that show it was impossible for her to be accepted due to her young age. Despite that, the Geostar jury listened to her and offered their praise. In 2008 and 2009, Mariam took part in the qualification rounds of the Eurovision Song Contest but without any luck. Twice she participated in the Ana-Bana contest but back then she performed in a different genre and the jury did not like her style. Finally, she came to Georgias Got Talent at her moms behest and is very proud of her achievement. Mariam: After I appeared on TV, people recognize me in the streets. They stop me, cheer for me and say nice things This gives me more stimulus to fight. I spend so much time on singing that I have little time left for studying. But my teachers at school understand my situation and support me. I did not, however, expect the reaction I received after my performance. After she performed, one of the jury members (Gega) said that this one song would change Mariams life. She admitted that it already had.

Five men and one woman this was the band Next Level who presented quite an eclectic show during another casting of Georgias Got Talent. The group is from the city of Rustavi and had never performed on stage before. As soon as they finished, people started asking questions: Who is better? Them or their competitors New Style (who had performed earlier). The fact is that the debut performance of Next Level proved to be successful. Four members of the group are students while two are still school age. They do not have a solo performer and have never attended choreography lessons. Each of the band members loves dancing. First, they danced separately but then their paths crossed and they started performing together. They are so enthusiastic that they spend more time in the practice hall than at home. They have put a lot of effort into dancing. Irakli Lomidze: Our performance for Georgias Got Talent made quite a splash. Some liked us, others did not. This is probably how it should be. We fit some peoples taste while we are not so acceptable for others. Still, we have gained some fans. Amiko Samadashvili: Before Georgias Got Talent nobody had heard our name and even if we do not win, this project has already done a lot for us. The style that we dance is not popular in Georgia and Georgias Got Talent was our opportunity to show people what we are and what this style is. We have done our best and we still have everything ahead. Each member of our group has a different taste and likes different genres. We discuss and share our opinions and fantasies with each other and then democratically create our shows. We are self-taught and dancecrazed people.

Jimi Ebitashvili (nicknamed Michael Jackson) has been imitating the King of Pop for about ten years. He does everything to look like and to be like his idol. Whenever he has free time, he puts on the music of Michael Jackson and tries to master his moves. He had lived in Belgium for 15 years but when he learned about the casting for Georgias Got Talent on the internet he immediately purchased a ticket and flew to Georgia the very same evening (as the next day was the final day of castings). Jimi: I was familiar with the British project but since I do not speak English I could not participate there. I am a huge fan of Michael Jackson but unfortunately I never attended one of his concerts. His death was almost like a tragedy for me and this is probably why I made the decision to try my luck on Georgias Got Talent. Besides dance moves, Jimi can do his own make up, and choose concert costumes and performances. He has participated in concerts in Belgium but never in Georgia. Jimi: I think very few people will recognize me on the stage because I am in make up and I want it to be as if it is really Michael Jackson rather than me in front of you. This is good for me since I like being free. This show gave me the stimulus to make my hobby more perfect and diverse. Mikho and Maro or Elene and Giorgi Tchamiashvilis are among the most peculiar and merry participants of Georgias Got Talent. This duet from the village of Shibriani in the Sagarejo Region managed to captivate the jury and the audience with a small theatre sketch. Elene: We dont have actors in our family but we really want to take up this profession. We are not twins but we were born in the same year, we studied in the same group and we have been together most of our lives. We have participated in small theatre perform-

Giorgi: When we heard that the casting for Georgias Got Talent was being held, we prepared a small sketch with a dance in just three days. We were very nervous before going out on stage but once we were there we managed to relax and showed everything we could. The applause and ovations added to our motivation. Since that day we have been receiving phone calls from strangers who have congratulated us, which was quite unexpected. You will probably remember Mikho and Maros Disco Tango. Just like the audience, the jury liked them very much and approved them for the next round. Finally we have a pair of twins who are extremely cute and active on stage and incredibly reserved off stage: the nine-year-old twin sisters Elene and Eka Torias. When I first met them I really did not think they could set such a fire on the stage and go crazy like they did. Besides the fact that Eka and Elene look very much alike, they are also excellent dancers. As soon as their mom noticed this, she brought them to the Saladze Childrens Studio. In their case, it was Georgias Got Talent who came to their house, not vice-versa. The producers of the project learned about the talents of these twin sisters and paid them a visit. The twins performance has caused a big reaction in the internet world too. Somewhere it was written that If there was a world record given for people who receive the most cute evaluations per minute, they would surely win it. Thus, without the efforts of Rustavi 2 and Geocell, all these people would have remained unknown. Like the famous saying goes, talent needs to be given a wide way to go, and Georgias Got Talent has just proved it.

It took her years to win fame. To do this she says one needs to create something unique. For her, such a thing was the program This is Love. It was broadcast at night and Gvantsa talked about the loves of famous people. She worked the whole week in the library to collect materials for her program. She had to read a lot to gather sufficient information. During the course of one hour Gvantsa told her radio audience about the details of love and the next hour was for receiving phone calls. It was at this time that she was nicknamed the Love Expert who everybody thought was in love and who was always asked advice in the matters of love.

Now she is the head of music programming. She is recognized not only by her voice but by her appearance as well. The Academy of Stars made her appearance more recognizable. During the show, it was Spider who sat in the studio and recorded her. With his help her listeners could finally see what the owner of this familiar voice looks like.

In the popular Rustavi 2 program called Merry Starts Gvantsa become a co-program host together with Dima Oboladze. It was here, behind the scenes, that Gvantsa saw Spider for the first time. What is 13? Nobody knows. There are Ten Commandments; the God loves Trinity. Football is played by 11 persons, while basketball is played by five. There were 101 Dalmatian dogs; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs constitute a total of eight. In one word, as if nothing has a direct link with 13, but if we watch closely, 13 is a magic number. Simply, it should be noticed. For example, there are 13 persons depicted in the Last Supper Twelve Apostles and Jesus. Probably, such negative attitude towards the number 13 has originated from this painting. According to one of the prejudices, if there are 13 people sitting around the table, one will certainly die. In order to avoid this unexpected death, the profession of the fourteenth guest has emerged among the Irish Catholics. A person with such profession was hired only if the number of invited guests was exactly thirteen. Jewish males are circumcised when they turn 13. Traditionally, circumcision has a great importance for the Jews and respectively the number 13 is also very important for them. In the American hotels the 12th floor is followed by 12+1, or 14. There are no rooms numbered 13. There are no rows numbered 13 in most of the planes. Moreover, there are no 13th rows in the Italian opera halls or cinemas. The Thirteen Clubs was created in many countries, including in the United States and France to debunk the superstition of 13 at a table being unlucky. They met on the 13th of the month (I think they still meet) for a dinner served to 13 people at each table and held senseless rituals calling either kind or wicked forces. However, nothing extraordinary has ever happened to any of them. There are people who believe that the number 13 brings misfortune. It is called triskaidekaphobia or fear of the number 13.

However, there are people, who have quite different opinions and try to introduce this number in their lives for example to have a telephone number including the number 13, to live in house No 13 and so on. For example, when Kakha Kaladze moved to Milan, he put on a football shirt No 13. However, later more superstitious person, Nesta joined the team and put on the shirt numbered 13. In reality, number 13 would have been nothing if it were not our curiosity to dig deep in such things which are not our business. We ourselves have turned the number 13 into an unlucky or sometimes lucky number. We all have our number 13. There are as many opinions about the number 13, as many heads exist on the earth. Personally for me, it is nothing but a usual number, which is placed between 12 and 14 and which is used as frequently in life as other numbers. Like other numbers, special attention is paid to the number 13, when you turn 13. So, in 2010 Geocell will celebrate its 13year anniversary; however, it can be said that it will celebrate its 12+1-year anniversary. The question is that 13 years have already passed since Geocell was established, but a year has passed since the companys rebranding. Although paradoxical, the fact is that for some Geocell is 12 years old, for others it is only 1, while really it has turned 13. P.S. I would like to ask you one question about whether 13 is a lucky or unlucky number: is this number lucky or unlucky for the Apollo 13 crew? They failed to land on the Moon but escaped the death. For some time I used to write art-chronicles for a monthly magazine and I had to attend every art-event in Tbilisi. During this time, the events that I most frequently attended were photo-exhibitions, because during that period Georgia was experiencing a boom in photography. Every other youngster seemed to have a camera hanging around their neck. Perhaps they considered photography to be the easiest medium with which to gain entry to the art world or perhaps the rapid advance of digital technology prompted them to shoot everything they saw. But this introduction is no good for starting the story of the photographer Davit Meskhi. I first met him when he was assigned to take a picture of me. For Davit, photos are an integral part of human relationships, life situations, music, books, cinema and his own lifestyle. So, I should say that Meskhi is my friend. He is my friend first and then he is a photographer.

He calls his first photo the video that he took of his parents when he was a child. Recently he turned one shot from that video into a still photo. However, it would be wiser to call his first photo the first one that he took in his adult life. which was heartbreaking. Eventually he convinced his friend to let him take one photo and when the pictures were developed, he was eager to see what came out of it. Finally I found it! It turned out that I had taken a photo! It was almost as I wanted it to be. There was a road with cars on it seen in the distance and the light cutting through everything. I was very pleased. I wanted something and it came out well. It was good. This was my first real contact with photography and this is where I developed an interest in it.

Shot #3 The first exhibition and Hot Chocolate Soon after he started taking photos, Davit Meskhi received an offer to put on an exhibition of his work. At the time he was working as a bartender and because the owner of the bar liked his photos very much he gladly sponsored an exhibition. In 2003, Davit Meskhi had an exhibition in the Amirani Cinema. He was proud and happy to see so many people visit his exhibition. And at a time when a number of important things were happening in the country: revolutions, demonstrations It was due to this turbulence that nobody thought to take his photos off the walls of the theatre and they stayed there for the entire month. Finally, when the revolution was over and when Davit went to get his pictures back, he was told that two of his photos had been sold. It is still not known who bought them but at that moment I knew that it was on! Today he is a photographer for the magazine Hot Chocolate. This was also a defining moment for me: I took photos for myself, I had exhibitions but this had not been assessed from the professional angle. After I started working for Hot Chocolate a new stage began in my career a more professional one. But at the beginning I was afraid that the photos I was told to take would not show any of my original elements. This was a panic-like fear. I had maintained a strict separation between my work and my photos. It took me a while to bring my own characteristics into the ordered photos, and so the editors liked my work. It is interesting to work when you are asked to take this or that photo and when you know that it is because of your particular style and because other photographers do not have it. Success gives you confidence. One of the most important elements in this regard for Davit Meskhi was an exhibition in Germany in which five Georgian photographers took part. There, four out of his eight works were sold. Today numerous European and American internet and print publications are interested in Mekhis photos. Once I remember, he was even contacted by Shanghai. There was a project there and its managers wanted to use Meskhis photos. Just recently he received a letter from a Los Angeles shop that wanted to hang his photos on its walls. I dont know what the photographers answer was, probably yes. Shot #4 Mekhis Photo I mentioned above that there were a lot of things in Meskhis life before photography. He traveled a non-classic and quite romantic way before coming to photography. First he studied geography and received a Masters Degree in hydro-ecology. Then he played keyboards in the local post-punk band Plaxa (with success). Later, for one month he lived with his friends who taught him web-design. After that he entered the Theatrical University in the faculty of cinema and occasionally worked as a bartender in various cafes. Then the specialty of photography was opened in the universitys cinema department and he moved there. Probably I was lazy to write, tired of webdesign and the only thing that was left was photography, he says. This is exactly what Meskhi is like always searching for something. And this is reflected in his photos. Black and white, snapshots, portraits, projects: Sports School, The Diaries of a Reserve Soldier, Landscapes Taken at Sunrise (when the earth seems to be light), nudes, skaters and the list goes on. The list is not chronological or systematic but each of the items on it is interesting, novel and different. But at the same time they have something in common, something that even such an amateur as myself can distinguish and identify as Davit Meskhis work.

Very often he takes pictures of youth. He says capturing young people gives him a chance to look into the future. He pictures those youngsters who somehow remind him of himself. Years will pass and many things will change in their lives and they may not even recognize themselves on the photos. Meskhi tries to look into their minds and to see their forms of expression. He is so much into this search that you can find him in unimaginable places. For example, one of his recent interests was centered on skating. It is a good example of how photos make life more interesting and suddenly connect you with different people and places. Meskhi wanted to capture Georgian skaters. The fact that the skaters were skating in the centre of Tbilisi was so removed from everyday Georgian reality that he could not have missed that. In this process he bought a skateboard and practiced it almost as much as he used his photo camera. There was a counter reaction as well: one of the skaters started taking photos. This is good too! And one more thing: Meskhis photography is a result of influences, inspirations and a lot of experience. My interest in photography was aroused by the same thing that aroused my interest in cinema, music and literature, and it is the same topic and means of expression that I search for. I may listen to a song and create an image in my mind and then try to visualize it. This is a synthesis of everything: my childhood impressions, feelings from TV, magazines and travelling in foreign lands.

Mathew Bryza put on shorts and a shirt and we had such a photo session that you could only see in the video music of The Smiths. Unknown Shots Today Davit Meskhi has a great many photos. He can sit down peacefully and spend some time to sort his pictures taken over the past 10 or so years. This is something he would gladly do: It will be very interesting to sort pictures taken in different years and see how people appear and disappear and who has left what legacy. I do not know what he is doing for the time being. I remember him telling me that he did not know what to do. He had philosophical thoughts about art. I hope this does not last long. And if you learn that there is a photo exhibition of Meskhi in the town, do not miss it. You will surely find something interesting for you.

A Lilac Lady

It was Spring of 1948, a 83-year old widow Hulda Klager was looking over the window of her house in Washington D.C. She had a tense expression; she was quiet and seemed to be listening to the rain drops on the roof of the stable and deserted water mill. Occasionally, she would look at the outrageous river flowing near her house, she had a fear in her eyes. She was trying to avoid looking at the bush of lilacs; she would not bear to see how rain was withering her plants. Nonetheless, the next day, even worse thing happened, the swirling waters of the Columbia River swept across her property, wiping out her lilac gardens. Only the big trees withstood the flood but undaunted and at the age of 83, she set about rebuilding her garden. Many people who had purchased her lilacs in the past returned starts to her so she could replace her losses. None of those 64 varieties of lilacs which Hulda had created herself, had survived. Family, friends and even complete strangers helped the old hybridist to bear this tragedy. It took two years and a great deal of work to again give life to all 64 varieties of lilacs. At the end of two years, she resumed her tradition: Every spring when lilacs showed first buds, a single gardener would open her gates for people. From ten oclock in the morning, she was showing off her garden, taking her guests take on tour around her estate. She was never tired of talking about her lilacs. If any of the guests wanted to have lilacs, she would give them for some cost. Hulda, at the age of 90 was as hard working and enthusiastic in her garden as when she was 16. Her acute eyesight would not leave any weeds unnoticed. She had a brilliant memory, she remembered the name, flavor and history of each lilac. She had never been bed-ridden, the only difference was that Lady Klager worked in her garden from the wheelchair. It is spring, time to plant lilacs. To me, lilac is more associated with spring than snowdrops and cyclamens, because lilac is the bush which needs 6 hours of contact with sun in order to blossom into bright-colour flowers and to fling splendid fragrance. So when lilacs are fully bloomed and flavoured, it means that spring has truly come. Roots of Lilacs can be equally traced in Asia and Europe, but if you try to search more information about lilacs than you knew before reading this article, you will discover that lilacs are the most popular in America. Americans adore lilacs, they have recorded all days related to bringing lilacs on their continent. Americans are often told, if you decide to plant lilacs in your garden, dont forget, they are the part of your country history. This is the story behind this statement: In 1767, Thomas Jeferson, in his diary, described his own, special method of planting lilacs. After twenty years, George Washington himself was planting Presidential lilacs in the garden. To cut the long story short, lilacs are the part of American history with roots in Europe, similar to the majority of Americans. The most famous lilac (Syringa Vulgaris) was born in East Europe, however, French people grew so many varieties and hybrids of it, that today, France has become the synonym of the most beautiful, the most fragrant and the brightest color lilac. Germany with her family when she was two years old. She was always fond of wild flowers, but she started gardening after becoming sick. While she was recovering from an illness, some of her friends brought her a book called New Hybrids in plants. After reading this book, she was anxious to begin her own experiments with hybridizing plants especially apples. She could not wait till the day when he would develop a bigger and juicier apple in practice. The experiment turned to be successful. Hulda was delighted with the result, her big sour and juicy apple was the best match for making American Apple pie at home. In 1905 she began hybridizing lilacs, she ordered 7 different varieties of lilacs. She used to get up at dawn to enjoy the sight and fragrance of lilacs at the background of sunrise. Later she started experiments on lilacs. She was doing everything by herself, she opened a new bud of lilac with a small hook, collected the dust with a brush and moved onto other varieties of lilacs. She was mixing the lilacs of different tones, fragrances, sizes and flowers. She wanted to get the darkest lilac colour. In five years, she had created 14 new varieties and after ten years, the amateur lady hybridist even received state awards. She became so famous in 1920s that people used to go to her garden without any pre-notice. She had developed so many new varieties that she decided to hold an open house each spring when the lilacs were in full bloom to share her efforts with other lilac enthusiasts. Today, Huldas lilacs are looked after by the Lilac Society. It mainly unites elder age ladies who have put in many hours of hard work hoeing, spraying, weeding and pruning in order to restore the gardens to the condition they enjoyed under Hulda Klager's care. There are different varieties of lilac bushes in the garden, some of them are dark violet, others pink or yellow with white elements. There is one strict rule established in Klagers estate, lilac bushes must not be allowed to grow in height, their fragrance must not be wasted in the air on a windy weather. It is important to maintain this unbelievably beautiful micro-climate in the garden. Only a couple of bushes have grown in height, no one dares to cut them, as they are the Men of the garden, they have the names of Huldas husband Frank and son Fritz. Lilac Society managed to maintain the old name of each lilac in the garden, so one can see here lilacs like Sweet Blanche, Queen of Burgundy, A beauty from Nans, Sharl the Tenth, Prerian dwarf, Prediction, Pink cloud, Miss Elen Willmont, President Lincoln and Leon Gambeta. Out of so many varieties, only one carries the name of Hulda, it is a pink lilac, with two-layer leaves (i.e. each flower has eight leaves) and a magnificent aroma.

Lilac Society garden is supervised by 81-year old Peggy Stanlund, who likes to say: People have pets, Hulda had lilacs. Today, Huldas fence is painted in white. None of the fence can hold the smell of lilacs from spreading outside. There is a big notice hang in the garden: Please do not touch lilacs. Lilac Society maintains and looks after the garden with the help of 10-dollar donations made by each guest. The garden has lots of visitors, they come here to find peace. Although the garden is always full of people, one can find some peace and quietness there. Colourful bushes of lilacs are arranged in rows, there are walking paths made between them. Lawns are newly cut, the sun is shining pleasantly. It is kind of a therapy to sit on a wooden branch and observe the gradation of lilac colours. Dont be surprised, your deep thoughts may be interrupted by the sound of a steam-engine, there is a railway passing near the estate. The noise of train will be lost somewhere and will be replaced by the pleasant sounds of birds and door bells. It is a great place to give you memory some rest, to enjoy the tones of lilacs and to smell acute, sweet and sometimes even sour fragrance of lilacs. Only after meeting with American lilacs, I realized what Tbilisian spring lacks and what people in Tbilisi need to relax from their multiple daily stresses public gardens and squares with blooming flowers, where one would relax, enjoy magnificent fragrance of flowers and receive plant therapy in an urban environment.
