While Wisconsin winters have a way of putting some of us in a bit of a funk, this time of year awakens us to the renewal ahead. The outdoor walkers emerge once again. The tulips and daffodils begin to take a peak at the world. The evenings have more sunlight to keep us on our toes a bit longer. And, if resolutions are not for you, this may be the month you get motivated to take better care of yourself. It just so happens that March is National Nutrition Month; a good time for us to evaluate our eating habits. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics created the nutrition education and information campaign in order to focus attention on the quality of food we are putting in our bodies along with the quantity of exercise we are taking in each week. Lets all take this opportunity to better ourselves! There are a number of Web sites to help you on your wellness journey. Having three teenagers who thrive on technology, I can hold my own, well, on the computer anyway. When I finally get my turn, I enjoy visiting BeWellCooking.com. It is here where I am reminded what a huge responsibility parents have in teaching our children about healthy eating habits. Their nutrition impacts the development of their minds and bodies. As a parent, you can help pave the way for a lifetime of better moods and better health by helping them develop an appreciation for planning, preparing and eating a range of tastes. Ive also learned from experience that the earlier you start, the better. At my house, youre just not going to slip a healthy beet past the tightly clenched teeth of my 16-yearold, 175-pound, muscle-bound son wielding a menacing fork! In his case, I concede that I probably started too late. Our authors this month are especially excited to have the chance to educate you with their health and wellness expertise. get colorful with our choices. Terry Lemerond gives advice on how to arm yourself to fight off bacteria and viruses for the benefit of your health. Deb Sommerhalder encourages you to try a new exercise alternative, Bhakti yoga, a devotional experience. And so many more great articles await you in this edition. Please read on! I hope you are able to use some of what we offer this month to better your health and wellness the possibilities are endless! In health and happiness,

Massage it may be the perfect remedy

By lesley oKane

ost of us know how good a massage can feel, but did you know that massage can provide health benefits that go far beyond the relaxed and pampered feeling you may experience? Massage has been around for centuries and was used by ancient Chinese cultures as a healing tool for all kinds of medical conditions. Over the years, Western research has confirmed through numerous studies that massage therapy provides much more than just relaxation. The benefits are numerous ranging from treating chronic diseases, helping your immune system, improving the quality of sleep, increasing circulation and improving range of motion and flexibility to list a few. The amazing thing about massage is that

it creates a chemical change that actually reduces pain and stress throughout your entire body. You dont even have to massage the area that actually hurts to create this profound effect. Lets say you have a headache, just by having someone massage your feet with moderate pressure can trigger the body to release endorphins, which are your bodys natural pain killers. One study with Fibromyalgia patients, people who live with a chronic, painful condition, proved that after having a massage twice a week for five weeks their substance P levels were

lowered. Substance P is a chemical found in your brain and spinal cord associated with pain and inflammation. Our lymph system, which is a key player in the bodys ability to ward off disease and heal itself from injury, is also directly affected by massage. The manual movement from massage can increase the flow of lymph. This helps your body remove harmful substances from tissues and increases your immune function, which prevents you from becoming sick. Statistics show almost 80-90% of all

10

[Massage] helps your body remove harmful substances from tissues and increases your immune function, which prevents you from becoming sick.
illnesses are due to chronic stress. When we experience stress, our bodies create an increased amount of cortisol, a hormone that actually weakens our immune system if built up over time. Massage lowers these dangerous cortisol levels, again helping our body to ward off sickness. Other benefits include improving your range of motion, flexibility and recovery time from injuries. Incorporating routine massage and even adding in some stretching to your massage sessions can be very helpful. The built up lactic acid in your muscles is released and an increase of blood flow brings nutrient rich blood and oxygen to your muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints, promoting proper repair and recovery. As we age, become less active or develop arthritis, our joints tend to tighten up and move less freely, resulting in a loss of both flexibility and range of motion. Massage actually helps in producing more synovial fluid, the bodys natural lubricant, which carries nutrients to cartilage preventing it from becoming dry and brittle. This allows joints to move more smoothly, hence better range of motion and flexibility. Do you find yourself having a difficult time with falling asleep or staying asleep? Serotonin is an important brain chemical needed to regulate our sleep/wake cycle. People with insomnia many times show lower levels of this beneficial chemical. With massage, these levels are actually increased, which in turn can aid in getting

a better nights sleep. Some of us may remember our mothers rubbing our backs or legs before bedtime. Little did we know how truly beneficial this was for us. Thanks, mom! As we are seeking out alternative therapies to better our health or to compliment other treatments, massage should definitely be added to the list. It may feel like we are just getting pampered and letting go of some stress but in reality our body is reacting in marvelous ways, helping us to maintain optimum health. Massage, its definitely not a luxury its a necessity.

Dog treat disasters

o, Im walking down the aisles of a local big box department store and pass the pet food. Of course, since everything in my shop is all natural, without any chemicals, artificial color or preservatives, I just have to take a peek at the items on the shelf. I already know that all the dog and cat foods are using meat-by-product as their main meat source, which is basically downed, sick and dying cows, euthanized animals from vet clinics and of course can be road kill, not to mention the leftover meats and Styrofoam containers that go to the rendering plant from the grocery stores. I already know this much, including the fact that they are filled with corn, wheat and soy, which are huge offenders for dog allergies and are filled with chemicals to preserve them. Yes, I already know that, but now is the time to check out the bags of treats. Oh my goodness, how can they sell things like this? I wont name names, but please check your bags of treats at home. One is a bag with soft and chewy red colored things that smell like bacon. Here are a few things to look out for: ground corn and corn gluten. Did you know that all those dogs that died three years ago were eating food and treats that had gluten in them? And, most gluten doesnt come from the USA. Next, I see wheat flour, ground yellow corn, water, sugar, glycerin, soybeans and bacon preserved with sodium nitrite. Again, more chemicals. Please remember that dogs really are meat eaters. Not too many

dogs are running through fields eating all the corn and wheat they can find. When you see grains in food and treats, its just filler. And, do we really want to be feeding our dogs sugar? Did you notice where in the list the meat actually was? Like number nine. Your heaviest ingredients are in the first five listed. So, Wheres the Beef? Oh, I forgot to say that the bacon is also preserved with BHA. Last time I checked that can cause kidney and liver damage. OK, were getting close to the end of this bag. Red #40, yellow #6 and blue #1. These colors can be cancer causing agents. Do they really have to color it so it looks pretty for us? My dog cant see color. Would he really eat it if it wasnt bright red? Lets just throw that bag right back on the shelf! Heres another favorite, treats shaped like little T-bone steaks. You know which ones I mean. Mainly the same ingredients, except I find a few extra offenders. Natural porterhouse steak flavor? What the heck is that? Think about it. If it were natural they wouldnt have to add it. One of my favorite worst ingredients is in the little sticks that look like sausage links. Its called Propylene Glycol. Did you know thats in anti-freeze? Yes, anti-freeze! It is a carrier that makes things moist and pliable. Oh yah, onion extract is also in this one. Werent we all told by our vet to never give onion to a dog? Bottom line is that these companies arent in the business of caring about your animals health. Their only concern is the almighty dollar. Please learn to recognize ingredients. If in doubt you can always Google an ingredient or the side effects of an ingredient. Some of these ingredients may cause seizures if you have an animal prone to that. Buy treats that are whole meats, pretty much corn-, wheat- and soy-free, and preserved with vitamin C (ascorbic acid), mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) and rosemary. Now you can freak out and clean out your cupboard. Get rid of all the chemical treats and start over. Happy hunting!

Change
By tony Bednarowski

ecently, a very good friend of mine, who happens to be a personal trainer, asked me, How can I get my clients to commit to my training and nutrition advice? And, How do I get my clients to stop lying to me? I gave him the same answer that I have given many of my colleagues over the years; YOU dont.

To begin, there are two things we must always understand: Never OVERESTIMATE the power you have to change someone else Never UNDERESTIMATE the power you have to change yourself
You see, a personal trainer or a nutrition specialists job is every bit as hard and frustrating as a drug and alcohol counselors. First, you have to get the client to believe and trust in you. But, within that, the biggest obstacle is in determining whether this client really wants CHANGE bad enough to make it happen for himself. People generally set out on any new or already tried endeavor with the finest of intensions, but their conviction comes at a price most are unwilling to commit to. This commitment is called CHANGE. Changing ones lifestyle takes time and work; it is done in steps, retraining and creating new habits. Like any successful undertaking, the retooling starts from within. Committing and being completely honest with ones self is an absolute must. One has to fully desire that which they are setting out to do, be that what they want or what they truly need. It is necessary to understand that it will take time; realize there will be obstacles to overcome and that a good, sound support
13
Natures Pathways | March 2012

system should be in place. All of this is imperative in order to make ones journey successful and life-lasting. So, you see, there is more that goes into CHANGE than just a good thought or intention. I encourage you to take the time to

set yourself up for success with what is outlined here. Be completely honest with yourself. Make your commitment with your intent solid and pure ... then, CHANGE will become inevitable.

Arm yourself against intestinal parasites naturally!

By terry lemerond

f you travel extensively, or simply come into contact with a lot of people as part of your job, your immune system is under pressure. You may have already experienced the results of not taking steps to guard against viruses, bacteria and parasites: missed days at work, cramps and just feeling miserable. But finding ways to avoid immune system down times can be difficult. There are plenty of over-thecounter products on the shelves that treat symptoms, but they carry a lot of side effects with them.

Luckily, there is a great way to prevent and treat the viruses, bacteria and intestinal parasites that can make life tough. It is a combination of bio-typed concentrated plant oils that are safe and effective. Biotyped oils, unlike oils used for aromatherapy, are intended for internal use, and they are stringently tested for safety and purity. This is important because these powerful plant oils can contain as many as 300 biochemically distinct molecules, and each one is active in the body.

has strong antibacterial and antifungal capabilities. The compound in the plant responsible for this is called cinnamaldehyde, and inhibits Staphylococcus aureus which, beyond staph infections, can also cause a form of gastroenteritis that brings about nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It is also effective against four species of the problematic yeast Candida, including C. albicans. Its a great botanical to have on your side for many reasons.1-3 Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) protects against a variety of nasty intestinal organisms, including Escherichia coli (E. coli), an unfortunately common cause of serious food poisoning symptoms, and especially a danger to young children and older adults.4
Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata) contains a powerful compound, eugenol, which shows a remarkable range of health benefits. It is a strong antibacterial agent. It stops yeast overgrowth and inhibits oral pathogens like Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia as well. Plus, eugenol from clove shows anti-inflammatory effects.5,6 oregano (Origanum compactum) has been used as a culinary and medicinal herb for generations. Because of its excellent ability to fight bacteria including E. coli it makes perfect sense to rely on concentrated oil of oregano to fight parasites and keep your digestive tract and immune system healthy.7-10 Peppermint (Mentha piperita) tends to have a cooling effect on tissues in 17

intestinal protection from parasites

Its easy to forget that 70% of our immune function is determined by our digestive system until something goes wrong. But to prevent viruses, bacteria and intestinal parasites in the first place or to recover faster from their effects you need a strong biotyped plant oil combination that includes cinnamon, coriander, clove, oregano, peppermint and savory in a 150 mg dosage. It is a very powerful, broad spectrum antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic supplement. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia)

expert answers to your health and wellness questions

Boxed foods, winter health and getting cardio without the treadmill
By Karmen Nenahlo

Question: Im not a particularly great cook, and I seem to eat a lot of boxed foods. Is this a problem if health is one of my primary goals? Answer: It really depends on the specific foods youre eating, but its definitely advantageous to eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables and all-natural whole grains as possible, not to mention fresh meats and seafood. That said, convenience, price and several other factors most likely play into your food choices as well, so choosing the best foods 100% of the time may not be all that practical. My advice to you would be to move in the direction of fresh foods as much as you can, given your particular lifestyle. And remember, you dont have to be a great cook to reap the health benefits of nutrient-dense foods. They may taste better if you know how to properly prepare them, but its pretty easy to throw together some chicken or fish with a cooked whole grain and some veggies for a quick and easy (and healthy) dinner. I would also recommend taking a basic cooking class so you can learn a new skill one that will continue to pay health dividends moving forward. Question: I hate getting sick. Can you provide some tips and hints to keep me healthy throughout the winter months? Answer: Im with you being sick sucks! Luckily, there are a couple tried and true habits that will help you avoid the latest bug. First of all, wash your hands frequently, and by all means, avoid touching your face (especially your eyes, nose and mouth). Drink plenty of fluids, get plenty of sleep (people forget how important this is to a healthy immune system) and get a flu shot as well. It goes without saying that a healthful diet is ideal, but I would also recommend a good quality multivitamin/mineral supplement too, since most people struggle to eat a balanced and varied diet on a daily basis. But to me, the most effective way to avoid illness is

to stay away from people that are already sick. This can certainly be a challenge, especially if you have kids, but do your best. Put these tips to good use, and you should be able to skirt through the winter with nothing more than the occasional head cold, if that! Question: Im big into weightlifting, but Im not a huge fan of cardio. Is there a way for me to enhance heart health without hopping on one of the traditional pieces of cardio equipment for 45 minutes at the gym? Answer: Yes absolutely! Cardio doesnt necessarily mean you have to get on the bike, treadmill or elliptical. You simply need to get your heart rate up and that can be accomplished during your weight training sessions. Doing compound sets or supersets, or intense circuits with very little rest, will definitely get your heart rate kicking, and these provide the fitness and health benefits youre looking for. You can get active in plenty of other ways too, without feeling like a hamster on a wheel. Try playing one of your favorite sports or go hiking in a nearby park. Even tubing or sledding in the wintertime can provide a good cardiovascular workout. Just think outside the box a little and keep the focus on fun!

the body. It is a strong antibacterial, too. In fact, researchers have found that peppermint inhibits some of the most troublesome bacteria, including again E. coli. Peppermint also shows antioxidant power, helping protect cells from free-radical damage.11-13 And last, one of the most effective ingredients in this group is the bio-typed concentrated oil of Savory (Satureja montana). It is unrivaled against pathogenic germs you can encounter every day or while youre travelling. It helps balance levels of good bacteria in your intestines so that your digestive and immune systems continue to operate healthily and you stay regular.1

Get hooked on the beauty benefits of the Dead sea

By Caitlin Brotz

t the ripe old age of three million, the Dead Sea has been a staple in promoting health and beauty since ancient times. Named the Dead Sea due to its lack of plant, fish and any other living life in the water, it features an extremely high content of minerals. Ironically, the very minerals that keep plant and fish life at bay are also responsible for the health and vitality of those that have harnessed its powers over thousands of years. Aristotle,

the Queen of Sheba, King Solomon and Cleopatra are said to have recognized and indulged in the healing and therapeutic properties of the Dead Sea. According to the Dead Sea Research Center, what makes this sea, in particular, so special is that it contains a unique solar irradiation, an increased oxygen density, a high-density salty sea with unusual salt composition, thermo-mineral springs and a special natural mud. These unique properties continue to make the Dead Sea a center for research, health, wellness and beauty today. If youre not able to jump on a plane and spend the day at the Dead Sea, fear not! Everyone can easily experience the power of the Dead Sea by incorporating its salts and mud into their beauty and wellness regime. But the question remains, What really makes something as simple as mud and salt so special?

place, it contains over 26 minerals essential to skin health and balance, including chloride, bromide, magnesium, sodium, calcium and potassium. Containing such minerals, the salts are believed to provide the following health and beauty benefits: rheumatologic conditions: Skin absorbs minerals from Dead Sea salt while soaking to help stimulate blood circulation in treatment of arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and osteoarthritis.2 Common skin aliments: Skin disorders such as acne and psoriasis may be relieved by regular soaking in water with Dead Sea salt. High concentrations of magnesium may also aid in improving skin hydration and reducing inflammation.3,4,5 anti-aging: Soaking in Dead Sea salt is additionally recommended to help reduce wrinkle depth.5 Popular products including Dead Sea salt, for easy incorporation into your daily routine, include bath salts and soaks and other skin exfoliants.

The first thing that makes Dead Sea salt unique is that it varies greatly from other salt in chemical makeup. Dead Sea salt contains less than 3% sodium chloride, while normal ocean water salt is made up of roughly 97% sodium chloride1. In its

Dead sea mud
Like Dead Sea salt, Dead Sea mud is jam packed with minerals such as potassium, magnesium, sodium, bromine and calcium. It is traditionally harvested from the bottom of the sea where high amounts of these minerals naturally settle and are absorbed. Impurities are removed from the mud, and it is packaged for use. Uses and benefits of Dead Sea mud include: Fine mud grains cleanse the skin and remove dirt particles and impurities. As mud dries it pulls out toxins from skin, firming and tightening. Moisturizes skin and helps with natural hydration. Gently peels away dead skin cells to reveal a more youthful and healthier skin layer. Helps to provide effective relief for skin issues such as psoriasis, eczema, acne and wrinkles.

Creative solutions are within you

By rev. linda losey

magine living in a world that works for everyone a world without lack where all are respected and loved. How broad and how vast is your capability to expand your thinking to that level of knowing where all people on this planet have enough food, clothing, shelter and all the necessities of life? A world of abundance is not only a possibility but can become a reality that surpasses all of our expectations. We can begin to seek that which connects us to one another rather than to find and focus upon differences. To coexist in harmony with one another would imply that we seek to find solutions that benefit all rather than separate us from one another. When we begin to change our thinking, we develop fresh perspectives and explore those creative solutions. Only then can we change our lives and our world. As we continue to evolve and shift our consciousness, we find people throughout this area who have been inspired to become part of the global movement toward sustainable living with the focus on the environment and the intention of realizing the necessity to live responsibility. Author Chris Michaels reminds us, Now is the time to develop a great vision for our world. We need visionaries now more than ever! The world can be anything we want it to be. We have the

power to create it from the vision we hold inside. What is the vision that you hold inside that is waiting for your recognition and your action? To initiate the vision we must first begin with the self to honor and lovingly care for our mind, our body, our spirit and our emotions. We can allow fear or stress to affect our mental and emotional well-being and allow conditions or situations to take over our lives, or we can trust that power within each of us, that knowingness or intuition that we all possess to change our lives and our world. That would require some work on our part, but that work is mental, to expand our consciousness, to allow our hearts to be open to love and compassion and that pure potential within the realm of all possibility. To allow this infinite power God, Spirit, Infinite Intelligence, Higher Power, the Universe to work in our lives, we must be willing to change. To believe in this power and to honor it, we begin by being conscious of what we are thinking about, where we place that trust on labeling ourselves, those in our families, our communities, and

our world. Are our daily thoughts centered on ourselves or others as being different, not good enough, or are we instead choosing by our thoughts to detach from the emotions of our egos, and turn within to truly listen to that still small voice that reminds us of our magnificence. With that reminder we can then utilize our time more wisely, use our unique gifts and talents to benefit our lives, our communities and our world and bring about peace in our lives; that inner peace that we all seek. Do you hold your thoughts accountable and have a greater vision for our world? I invite you to read these inspiring books: Your Souls Assignment by Chris Michaels and The Power Is Within You by Louise Hay. Philosophy, science and religion all lead us into the awareness that our thoughts create our experience. When you believe you have the right to aspire to greatness then you begin to focus your thoughts in a new direction. Imagine as you bless the past, honor the sacredness of the present moment and move into the future trusting your inner knowingness, you bring your energy into alignment with purpose, utilizing your gifts and talents to help create a world that works for all.

lack and white. Sun and moon. Good and evil. Male and female. Yin and yang. Love and hate. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The world is filled with the duality of opposites. Positive and negative are the pair of opposites that have been in question by most people since the New Year at Mystical Earth Gallery. Continually the question is asked, What mineral shall I use to overcome depression and negative feelings? No surprise, people want to feel happy and positive. Human nature, even when experiencing the positive, is to move the mind to an experience from the past, which generally is negative; remember the details (real or imagined); and then fixate on the negativity of that experience. Few can live in the moment. Our minds dwell on the negative. Some believe that the negative experiences that affect our lives now precede this life and are from previous incarnations. There are affirmations you may say, books you may read, many courses dealing with positive attitude to take and professionals that one can seek out to assist them in finding a more positive attitude. It is essential to remove the negativity to move on to the positive attitude that you seek. The number one mineral in seeking the positive is quartz crystal.

It is the stone of power and can help shift the negative into positive ions in the energy field. It can dispel that of the static negative energy, create a force field of positive energy, redirect that energy and then convert in into a favorable state. For one who focuses on the negativity of the self, it may stimulate positive thoughts and feelings. It can be worn for both physical and mental energy. Or place quartz crystals next to your favorite chair or the environment in general to protect, maintain and balance energy. Tibetan crystals, a quartz crystal from Tibet, are also excellent to create the positive. As the mind attaches itself to a problem, it helps move the association of the negative into a positive experience. This positive energy neutralizes the negative energy through relaxation and meditation. Smoky quartz is extremely effective in changing energy frequencies. It will help the negative energy become penetrated, transforming the negative emotions and energy patterns into the positive. Smoothly, it then assists in dissolving the negative energies and emotional blockages that create the barriers to positive energy. It dissolves those negative energy patterns that may arise from negative thoughts, anger or resentment.

This is a stone of transformation. It helps one acknowledge that as one door closes another door opens. It provides one with the incentive to actively pursue new goals and creates a forward motion of actions. Bloodstone. This will awaken the vibration in the base, sacral and heart chakras. Bloodstone will help to accept change in the energy fields and then recognize the benefits associated with these changes. One recognizes that the challenges facing one are essential before one may achieve perfection. If you have clinical depression, please seek professional help. Physical therapy for your lower back pain

By Sue walbrun, P.t.

ts a common scene a patient sees his family physician for an annual physical and mentions that hes been experiencing fairly constant low back pain (LBP). The physician performs an examination, x-rays are taken and hes given the option of medication to help manage his symptoms. The office calls the next day saying the x-rays show degenerative changes that are normal for his age and he should call if it persists. Some patients are referred for more extensive diagnostic tests, which can include an MRI, costing around $2000.

Medications can help control the pain, but who wants to have to take them forever? So, what other options exist? Consider seeking the help of a physical therapist specially trained in manual treatment of the spine. Many insurance companies are beginning to require physical

24

Natures Pathways | March 2012

www.naturespathwaysonline.com

therapy treatment before authorizing an MRI. Physical therapists (PTs) that specialize in treating LBP use various manual therapy techniques. Manual therapy is defined as the skillful use of the hands to mobilize joints, lengthen soft tissues and to improve neuromuscular control. This type of treatment addresses the cause of symptoms rather than simply treating the painful areas. What should one expect at an initial PT appointment? The appointment should include a full evaluation, explanation of findings and instruction in specific home exercises. A manually trained PT assesses for movement of joints and tissues that are hypomobile (not moving enough). These areas tend to be above and/or below the areas of pain, which are generally hypermobile (moving too much) and therefore, wearing out and causing pain. Assessing hip movement is also essential to the treatment of LBP because most of the muscles of the hip have some attachment into the spine, causing them to be included in a cause/effect relationship. Sometimes, one hip is tighter than the other and due to the muscular attachments into the spine, which can cause an abnormal rotation that needs to be addressed with manual therapy. This also leads to the importance of a specific home exercise program (HEP). A home exercise program should focus on addressing the areas of hypomobility and correcting muscular imbalances, which in turn will lead to reducing stress in the painful segments. A generic set of exercises or protocol, is generally not beneficial because it lacks specificity for the individual patient. Some exercises may be helpful and others not, depending on the findings. Another advantage to specificity is that it can improve compliance at home since the patient knows its designed for them. Also, by customizing the at-home program, the time needed to do exercises can be minimized (time is not wasted doing exercises that arent necessary). Generally, if manual therapy is going to help the patient, he should begin to see results (decreased pain, increased movement and increased function) within four treatment sessions (spaced one week apart) after which, the PT will discuss a further course of action. One advantage of this approach is that it requires one-on-one time between the PT and patient. With some insurance companies limiting the number of physical therapy visits it covers, you might consider seeking a manually trained PT that provides longer treatment times per visit. Also, given co-pays, seeing a PT for fewer visits (with longer treatment times) means youll pay less out of pocket. In summary, even though x-ray findings may show arthritis in the low back, more expensive diagnostic tests may not lead to treatment of the problem. Consider a cost effective option with a manually trained PT. Many times, the symptoms are related to joint dysfunctions (hypomobility), muscular imbalances and poor motor control that can be corrected with manual therapy techniques and then, maintained with proper home exercise prescription.
Sue Walbrun, P.T. earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from the University of Wisconsin Madison. She also completed the manual medicine series through the Michigan State School of Osteopathic Medicine and has continued her education on advanced manual and exercise therapy techniques. She specializes in treatment of the spine, headaches and chronic pain. She works with patients to evaluate the cause of their musculoskeletal symptoms and formulates a plan of care combining manual therapy and specific exercise prescription, with emphasis on empowering the patient in self-management of symptoms. Sue joined Osteopathic Medicine and Physical Therapy Group in 2000, and while not working, she cherishes family time, working out, scrapbooking and travel.

Brandon Walburn honored as Goodwills Outstanding Achiever

kid with a big smile and an even bigger heart is how team members at Goodwills La Crosse Retail Store and Training Center describe Brandon Walburn, Goodwills Outstanding Achiever for February. Walburn, who is a senior at Logan High School, has been with the La Crosse Goodwill for two years through its Schoolto-Work program. School-to-Work is a cooperative effort between Goodwill and area school districts that provides valuable work experience for high school students with special needs. These work experiences help to bridge the gap between the classroom and working in the community. The La Crosse student currently works

Monday through Thursday for about five hours each week at the store. Walburn has worked in the donations area and in the apparel department, where his primary responsibilities are taking care of the fitting rooms, including returning merchandise to the sales floor and customer service. In addition, he has assisted at the registers by greeting shoppers and bagging their purchases. Scott Weaver, La Crosse Goodwill store team leader, noted that Walburn is a hard worker and has a great work ethic. As soon as he clocks in, he immediately wants to get to work. When Walburn is doing the fitting rooms, he not only takes care of the return rack but he also walks the aisles,

looking for clothes that are off the hanger or on the floor. Store team members have even seen him straightening the end grid with the hats and bags. Walburn always takes the initiative to find tasks that need to be done. Brandon has learned a lot since he has been with the La Crosse Goodwill, Weaver said. He is always willing to learn a new job and put forth his full effort. Weaver said team members are impressed with Walburns can do attitude

Each month, a program participant like Walburn or a volunteer from one of Goodwills programs is chosen for this award. Achievers come from one of Goodwills 23 store communities, its Menasha campus or its Ralph B. Shiner Center in Appleton. Keith Wilk, chief operating officer of Programs and Services for Goodwill, said the award was established to recognize the strides that individuals have made, in part, because of their involvement with programs through Goodwill. Each honoree receives a certificate of achievement and Goodwill merchandise. For more information, contact Weaver at 608.783.2710 or sweaver_gw@gwicc.org, or Wilk at 920.968.6233 or kwilk_gw@gwicc.

Be a baby hugger Green your nursery

By amanda hammond

he phrase going green has often been thought of, and often is, about using environmentally sustainable products and having a low carbon footprint. Its a hippy-dippy thing, right? Wrong. Being green is more than that. For me it is about my family, specifically my toddler. I do NOT hug trees. I hug babies. I also love my husband, myself and even my dogs enough to give them a safe home. To me, green is synonymous with safe. When you look at it that way . Cancer, nervous system disorders and birth defects are on the rise. It is reasonable to assume that the toxins our babies are born with coupled with ones they are exposed to postpartum are partially to blame. Our bodies are affected by the scads of new chemicals produced each year as well as the ones already being used. According to studies done by the Environmental Working Group, babies are born toxic. The toxins found in their cord blood are alarming: Dioxin is a hormone disruptor. PCBs can impair fetal development lowering IQ permanently. Methylmercury impairs brain function. Babies bodies are to a disadvantage at conception, having to combat all the pollutants already in the mothers womb. This makes it crucial for mom to take care of her body by avoiding as many harmful chemicals as possible. Once baby is born, it is
Natures Pathways | March 2012

important to continue this trend in the home environment, especially her sleeping space. Babies spend at least 10 hours asleep. Whether they sleep in your room or their own room, there are several places toxins can be found. Lets start with the mattress as that is where they are actually laying (hopefully). Infant and adult mattresses are not manufactured in a very responsible way. Whether your little sweetheart is sleeping in a bassinet, your bed or in his crib, the mattress needs to be SAFE. It should be made with organic cotton or wool and void of toxins. This means, no flame retardants, no synthetic fabrics, no boric acid or antimony and no vinyl. 100% cotton, bamboo and wool are best, ideally if they are grown and manufactured responsibly. Cotton should definitely be organic being it is heavily doused with pesticides. Follow suit with the mattress pad and sheets. That new jungle-themed bedding set youve been eyeing up can have the above mentioned chemicals as well. The packaging on the mattress and bedding you buy should boast its virtues as being certified organic, nontoxic, Green Guard certified, etc. A great choice is Naturepedic, as they offer many sizes and styles of their nontoxic mattresses, sheets and mattress covers. There are many other good companies out there, too. Do your research though.

The crib and changing table need to be put together at least 3 months before baby arrives and allowed to air out. Ideally, this should be done outside as to keep the chemicals out of your home, but if that is not possible, let them off-gas in another room with a lot of open windows. This process takes between two to three months. The gas here is in the wood treatments and the wood itself if it is particle board or any other type of compressed wood. Formaldehyde and other VOCs are emitted from nursery furniture and other wood furniture in your home unless it is otherwise specified. If you can, it is really best to invest in a crib made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood or reclaimed wood. Other safe materials are wicker and rattan. The finish on nursery furniture should be VOC-free! Often it is not. Again, research! Green Guard has a great database of cribs and mattresses that are tested to have low to no off-gassing. Flooring is an important thing to consider as well. Whether the room rests on hardwoods, vinyl or wall-to-wall carpeting, there are some things to be aware of. Any flooring that involves adhesives is suspect when it comes to infant safety or your own for that matter. The adhesives used are often full of toxic chemicals. In addition, carpet can harbor a host of tiny particles including dust mites and pet dander. It is often treated

with stain resistant chemicals that off-gas. If you already have wall-to-wall carpeting in the nursery, steam clean it rather than using carpet shampoo. It gives a deep clean and can be done with just plain old water! The most family-friendly flooring is FSC hardwood flooring with nontoxic treatment. Other good options are slate, ceramic tile, cork and bamboo. Cork is more forgiving for newly crawling or walking babies. The drawback to avoiding wallto-wall is that you are sacrificing comfort. Who doesnt enjoy the feel of high pile carpeting under their feet? To remedy this, buy some safe area rugs with no backing that are made with natural fibers. Place organic rug pads underneath to keep them in place. Bamboo, organic cotton, hemp, wool and jute are good options. Make sure the dies are low-impact and nontoxic. Ideally they should be machine washable or easy to steam clean. DwellSmart offers some great options. This is a great way to warm up a cool slate or

ceramic floor! There should be no chipping paint, especially if your home is old. It is a good idea to have your home checked for lead paint before conception. Once pregnant, it is best not to remove the lead paint because it can release into the air. Paint over any exposed areas instead. If youd like to repaint, this is not a job for pregnant women. It makes for cute pictures, but thats about it. It is a disservice to your baby to be breathing in paint fumes. Have someone else do the dirty work. Your paint should be VOC free or low-voc after the coloring is added. Milk paint is another good option as it is naturally VOC free and free of many other chemicals. Wallpaper and borders should contain no vinyl and be applied with a nontoxic glue. When cleaning the nursery, be mindful of chemicals! Use safe products like Seventh Generation, Method, Meyers or better yet, make your own! Recipes involve baking soda, vinegar, washing soda, lemon juice and essential oils for the most part. Then all you need are some spray bottles. Once you have all your ingredients you can make years worth of product. Eco-nomical, right? Loving the cute curtains at Babies R Us? Fabrics used in your new non-toxic nursery should be free of any treatments like water or stain-proofing and flame retardants. Avoid synthetic fabrics and stick with natural ones like organic cotton, wool, bamboo, silk, linen and hemp. Organic cotton is recommended because it will not emit chemicals 31

in the journey of life Are we there yet?

By teresa van lanen

re we there yet? This is a common saying from youth who travel with family. Even a ride as short as an hour causes young ones to cry out as they are anxious to arrive at their destination. I have experienced trips like this both as a child and then as a parent. Another common saying about travel takes on another meaning; you know you have heard this one about the road of life being a journey not a destination. I think of these two sayings together as I assisted a friend of mine with a difficult personal situation. She and I have each gone through trials

in our lives and generally are pretty quick to see the lessons that we can learn from them. Back when I first met this friend we both were involved in self exploration. During that time I would have episodes where I felt like I had arrived to my destination. Then something would happen to derail me and I knew I needed to get back to it and away Id go. But every once in awhile I wanted to shout in frustration, Am I there yet?! If you have had the frustration of not getting to your destination fast enough, you know if you fixate on this, your trip will feel nearly endless. Use my life travel tips to avoid the feeling of Am I there yet?

Fill your life spaces with things and people that energize your spirit. Sharing a journey with others will add to fun on your road trip!

Dont let other drivers affect you in a negative way

When you find you are with others who may be traveling erratically; remove yourself from their negative energy by reinvigorating the passions and energy that fuel your spirit. Tap into your spiritual guidance by using meditation and other practices to help insulate you from others energies. It can be as dangerous to try to influence others journey as it is to allow others to influence yours. Recognize that we each may go our own way and sometimes end up at the same destination in the end. Looking at my friends journey, I know she will be a good traveler. She takes joy in the experiences along the way and learns from the detours and bumps on the path. I am just glad I can share the road with her once in awhile! Safe travels everyone!

Plan your route

It sounds so basic but if you dont know where you want to go, you will never make any headway.

Have some flexibility

Dont be too rigid with your trip. Life hits you with road bumps and detours, so expect this and be flexible enough to reroute your trip. Being too rigid with plans can cause major delays. Sometimes you may not realize you are on a detour. Once you do though; get reoriented and fuel up so you can get back on track.

Boost your energy while on your journey

found in pesticides. Not only that, but natural fabrics will not emit any type of smell and will look beautiful in any nursery. There are many adorable organic choices available. Check out www.babyearth.com. The air quality in our homes is far worse than what we breathe outside, even in a heavily industrialized area. Air quality has been associated with SIDS, so make sure your nursery has excellent air flow. Fans are great. A window fan or air conditioner will work, too. Open the windows and air your babys nursery a few times a day to release any toxic chemicals that have accumulated from furniture stains and paint. Keep your shoes off in your babys sleep space. Shoes track in pesticides, dirt and other harmful substances. Ideally, we shouldnt be wearing our shoes in the house at all. Eastern cultures set good examples as they find it completely disgusting to wear shoes indoors. They are right. Use incandescent light bulbs to sidestep the mercury found in compact fluorescent ones. When broken, the mercury is released

into the air of your home. Yikes. Incandescents also cast a more pleasant light. There is a reason babies scream at Wal-Mart. The designers from Inspired Everyday Living recommend light or neutral colors in a nursery because bright ones can be over-stimulating for babies. That is the last thing parents want when putting baby to bed for the evening! This is a place for sleep, so design it as such. Keep clutter as low as possible, using furniture that multitasks, shelves and hidden storage areas. Clutter causes stress, which is something we have enough of. And as you probably know, our babies can sense our stress and will respond accordingly. If you cant afford to buy the nontoxic crib or install cork flooring, make small changes. Opening windows and starting a no shoes rule will be a great start. So will cleaning with nontoxic products, which can be made for pennies on the dollar. You can also purchase a Babesafe mattress wrap that will block any off-gassing from your little ones mattress. Find them on Amazon.com. It may be frightening to hear all the things in your home that could potentially harm

your baby. The only thing more frightening is the ignorance we as parents have about these dangers. We certainly arent warned about them like we are about placing baby to sleep on his back. So empower yourself with information on these topics by doing research on your own. Use what you learn to make changes in your environment and feel good because you are truly taking care of your family. Love is an amazing motivator.

A monthly advice column for your energy system

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, I know that I am intuitive. I can feel my heart telling me what is right or wrong for me to do; however, I cant see anything visually. Is it possible to learn how to receive intuition through sight or do you have to be born with that ability? Eyes But Cant See Dear Eyes But Cant See, Yes, you are intuitive. What you are describing is an innate heart chakra gift within your spirit and, therefore, body. Heart gifts not only alert you with a change in heartbeat, a swelling in your chest or a change in breathing, it also allows you to heal through your heart and hands. This is a powerful gift that can sometimes be difficult to control. It may sometimes feel like you have to help someone or that you are responsible for fixing other peoples problems. If you feel that way, some boundaries are in order! To answer your question, yes you can learn any intuitive gift you are interested in; however, your naturally born gifts will come more naturally. Why do you want to learn to be clairvoyant (a person that can see energy intuitively)? Clairvoyance gets the most play in media and sometimes people feel like that is the only real
32
Natures Pathways | March 2012

way to intuit answers to lifes questions. This is not the case. Your heart intuition works just as strong ... if not stronger! If you simply want to strengthen the ability to see energy to become more versatile, then here are a few 6th chakra strengtheners you can try: Imagine an apple in your mind. Did you do it? If so, then you have the capability to work with your minds eye intuitively. The difference with intuition is that you allow the images to come to you rather than deciding what they will be first. Imagine yourself in a safe, natural setting. What is there? Explore. What do you see, hear, smell, taste and feel? Ask yourself, What color will help me with ____________ (some issue youre facing)? What color came to you? Now surround yourself with that color and go about your day. Pay attention to your dreams. Write them down and even imagine what would happen next after you wake up. Any activity that allows you to play with your imagination and build trust will also help develop your visual intuition. Good luck and have fun!
Tina, a Madison Intuitive Counselor and Energy Healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

he term LEED is often bandied about when conversations shift to the environment. A term used when discussing building certification, LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is an internationally recognized green building certification system that was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council 12 years ago. The system provides building owners and those who operate businesses with a distinct framework of guidelines that identify practical and measurable green design, construction, operation and maintenance solutions. In order to be fair, LEED uses a rating system that is developed through a collaboration by LEED committees. Committees

are groups of volunteers who represent a variety of building and construction industry subsets. Some of the things that LEED will measure through its rating system include: energy and atmosphere solutions water efficiency sustainable sites selection sustainable materials and waste reduction indoor environmental quality Organizations that are seeking LEED certification for a building must earn a minimum number of "points" to reach

certification. The maximum number of points offered is 110, which includes 10 bonus points. Most buildings are eligible for certification, but it's best to check with the LEED Rating System Checklist and find out the requirements for a particular project. That information is available at www.usgbc.org.

Build a strong foundation for wellness with food sensitivity testing

By Dr. David Janssen, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon
re you sensitive to particular foods? People are rarely successful in identifying foods that are the worst for them, except those that create an allergic reaction. Its difficult to know the foods, herbs, additives and chemicals you should avoid to improve your health. Diets consisting of foods that dont agree with you produce a negative cellular response in your body and speeds up the aging process. People react to food sensitivities in a variety of ways that are compromising to their health, including migraines, chronic fatigue, acid reflux,

skin disorders, hives, sinus issues, arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Weight loss professionals are particularly interested in identifying intolerant foods because they are harder to metabolize. A diet that includes foods that work against you does not help patients achieve their weight loss goals. Medical weight loss centers recognizing the critical role a diet plays in achieving optimal wellness offer patients a scientific snapshot of those foods to which a body is intolerant. A blood test performed by a professional with expertise in customized nutrition can identify to up 200 foods, additives, colorings, molds and even environmental chemicals a patient is severely, moderately or mildly intolerant to. Insurance may cover part of the test, but you need to check your policy. The test results will list acceptable foods, red-lined (severe) foods that should not be consumed for six months, moderate (avoid for three to six months) and mild, which indicates that particular item should not be in your diet more than once every four days. The results give the coordinator of the weight loss program the knowledge to customize a diet based on a four-day rotation for the patient, thereby increasing the likelihood of weight loss and maintenance success. Taking the test results one step further, patients can work with a team of nutritionists to create meal plans and recipes customized to any patients results. These meal plans are designed to be healthy, nutritious and easy to prepare. Detailed recipes are included for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Combining a customized diet with procurement of organic fruits and vegetables jump-starts a patients efforts in reversing the negative effects of food intolerance. The good news about nutritional testing is that you dont have to give up the foods on the severe and moderate lists forever. Once your body is detoxified for half a year, you slowly reintroduce the foods one by one, and see how you feel. Follow up tests after the initial baseline review are recommended. Roger Deutsch, founder of Cell Science Systems, the creator of the food intolerance tests, states, The testing provides customized feedback as to which foods and chemicals are activating your immune system. We believe in eating anti-inflammatory foods; but we also believe in avoiding specific foods that may not be compatible with your own biochemistry. Its all about customization. As Hippocrates so aptly said, Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food. The benefits of a healthy diet include healthy weight management, improved metabolic function, increased energy and better respiratory function. Its also true what you consume in the inside will be reflected on the outside. The largest organ, your skin, should see significant improvement. Make an effort now to spring into summer with more rigor and confidence with a customized nutrition plan!

Get your closet in order

By Jill Nelson

ave you ever stood in your closet and said, I have nothing to wear!? You are not alone. It is difficult to see what you have when things are unorganized, of various sizes and many years old. It is not uncommon when speaking with women to find that they dont wear 75% of what is currently in their closets. Here are a few steps to get your closet in order: get organized; make things ready-to-wear; and keep it manageable. First, get organized! Take everything out of your closet. Yes, everything! You are starting over. You may want to close the bedroom door, turn on the stereo and grab a glass of wine. Form three piles: one for donation; one for trash; and one for consignment. (Prepare yourself by getting educated on the rules of your favorite consignment business.) Examine each piece. If it doesnt fit, has a stain, is too worn or hasnt been worn in 1-2 years, out it goes. Be brave. Some of these could be your favorites, but not suitable to leave the house in. You are allowed to keep a few sentimental pieces. Those just in case clothes you have held onto in the event you lose a few pounds or in case you gain it back must go on a pile. As a rule of thumb, if the item is less than two years

36

Natures Pathways | March 2012

www.naturespathwaysonline.com

old and is still in style, put it on the consignment pile, otherwise donate. The keepers go back in the closet. Second, make things ready-to-wear! Dont put things back in the closet that need to be de-linted or ironed. You will never grab those in the morning when you are rushed to get out the door. Put those in another section of your closet ... well get to that in a bit. The clothes need to go back in the closet in such a way that works for you. Maybe its by item type (e.g., tanks, short sleeves, long sleeves) or by item color (e.g., whites, blacks, prints). Those clothes that need to be ironed or de-linted will then need some attention. My suggestion is to designate one night a week or every other for these chores. If the ironing board/steamer becomes a fixture in your bedroom or family room, you know you have a problem that you need to get under control. Third, keep it manageable! One trick is to coordinate several outfits ahead of time to wear for the coming week. Hang the tops, bottoms, shoes and jewelry all together in the closet. In the morning when you open the closet, there are 4-5 choices for you to wear that day. Its not only time-saving, but it also makes your morning a bit less stressful. If, after all of this, you look in your closet and its empty ... its time to go shopping! Next month well look at how to make the most of what youve got!

Wellness vs. wellbeing

By Julie a. rider, otr, ClCP

or the past few years, the idea of wellness has inundated our organizations throughout the country. There are wellness programs, wellness incentives, as well as wellness benefits in about 90% of companies. Each one of these initiatives is trying to better the health of employees in hopes that their efforts will decrease health care costs. Fortunately, there are some programs, incentives and benefits that are working. And yet, I ask to what extent and at what cost? Could we see greater results, could we spend less money, could we have happier, healthier employees? I believe the answer is yes, yes and absolutely YES! I believe it is in our approach. Which leads to my next thought, should we only focus on wellness (which typically is the measurement of complete physical and mental wellness) or could we take a risk and shift our focus to wellbeing? What if we came from the belief that if peoples wellbeing increases then their wellness will increase too? Individuals who focus on their wellbeing are more likely to be happy, healthy and whole. Wellbeing is the foundation to wellness. Just for MeTM Wellbeing Program is designed to enhance wellbeing, strengthen your relationships, expand your ability to manage stress and further enjoy what you do. The Just for MeTM Wellbeing Program has implemented successfully at Target Corporation, cities of St. Louis Park and Prior Lake (both in Minnesota), St. Catherines University in the Twin Cities and the Multiple Sclerosis

Often, women who care for a family pay too little attention to their own needs.
Society. Each participant in the Just for MeTM Wellbeing Program sets an intention at the start of the program and each week the focus is on one of twelve realms to encourage, inspire and ensure movement forward on that intention. Please join me each month in the Just for MeTM Series, exploring the twelve realms that will support our overarching intention of creating wellbeing throughout our lives:

Physical power relating to body

Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps extend your lifespan? Exercise is the key! Our bodies are made to move to feel their best. Physical activity decreases stress and improves your overall mood. If you find you are tired all the time, exercising is an effective way to battle fatigue. Research shows that people who exercise at least two days a week are happier and experience less stress. (Wellbeing, Rath & Harter, pg 78). Cultivating a love of movement can help us get beyond the concept of physical fitness separate from mental fitness and toward a lifelong program of good health through mind and body fitness. Developing an exercise plan that fits your lifestyle and your desires is critical. Redefine exercise as any activity that reduces stress and connects your mind and body. Is it something you enjoy and can maintain? A routine that brings us pleasure and is gentle

on our bodies is more likely to lead to the long-term health gains you are seeking. Others have found that classes such as Nia Technique, Ageless Grace, yoga and Zumba can provide that mind/ body connection to physical fitness. Check in your local area for classes currently being taught. Often, women who care for a family pay too little attention to their own needs. This added stress benefits neither you, nor your children and spouse. Can you take a look at your schedule (or your familys) and reschedule some time for yourself? What would it be like to say no?

some tips to help us start exercising and continue our commitment:

Select activities that you consider fun, enjoyable and most of all bring you pleasure. When the urge arises to move, follow the urge. If you experience pain stop! Find the level that brings you back to pleasure and work there. Create your own unique ways to stay inspired. Set and celebrate milestones. Strive to improve 1% a day. Find people to support you and count on them to cheer you on. How ready are you to feel better, have more energy and be happier? When do you want to start reaping the benefits? Who can help you get what you desire?

luck is not just for the irish!

By lynn Bub

oesnt it seem that some folks just always luck out? Its true: we all have that one friend or family member who always seems to be winning something, getting a promotion or finding the perfect partner, home or outfit. Well, there is some truth to being lucky. According to feng shui tradition, there are three kinds of overall luck in a persons life: heaven luck, earth luck and man luck (or, as I prefer: human luck). Of these three

types of luck, we purportedly have control over the earth luck (via how we construct our environments at home and work) and our man luck (via our ideas, decisions and choices). The good news is that you can implement some simple feng shui cures and tips to strengthen your environment and choices (earth and human luck) to bring more good fortune your way. So, here are a few cures and tips to help strengthen the various types of luck in

YOUR life: Keep a gratitude journal. This is a very simple, yet effective tool that you can use to monitor the way you perceive your world and your experiences. We tend to get that on which we focus. Its sometimes fun to have a travelling gratitude journal with another person, your entire family or a few friends. Start by choosing how many items you will list that you are grateful for and come up with a daily or weekly rotation.

40

Natures Pathways | March 2012

www.naturespathwaysonline.com

Its fun to see gratitude through the eyes of other important people in your life, too! Even children can participate in this activity and they often have a better grasp of gratitude than adults. Analyze your environment for physical (and, therefore, emotional, career, relationship or other) blocks. This one step, which is part of a greater clutter-clearing process, can yield amazing results. You technically dont need to know much about feng shui at all to benefit from clearing out physical blocks in your home, office or yard. I once recommended that a friend clear another friends clutter that was being stored in (of all places) her main entrance. Until this point, she had harbored some resentment toward this person. Upon sorting and sending the items back to their owner (or, in some cases, to the dumpster), the two were able to have their first open and honest conversation in months! Bottom line: if its happening in your home, its happening in your life. To make a change, you have to clear the block!

You should have a positive, solid surface on which to pay your bills, you should only have artwork that is consistent with feeling abundant...
If you are looking for luck in a specific area of your life, you need to take a look at the objects that are embodied in your space. For example, lets say you want to have a better handle on your finances. Even though there are specific spaces in the home to analyze, you can start with anything that touches your finances. Wherever your files are in the home, they should be neat and well-organized. You should have a positive, solid surface on which to pay your bills, you should only have artwork that is consistent with feeling

abundant, and any dead or dying plants need to go, etc. Once you get the hang of this idea, it becomes easier to see things through the literal translation of your subconscious. Analyzing objects or possessions related to relationships can be especially enlightening and fun. For instance, if you are hoping to meet a special someone or spice things up in a current relationship, you might literally check to see that you have more spices than just salt and black pepper! While this is just a short list of things you can do to improve your luck, it could definitely keep you busy for a while! Our subconscious likes to reveal itself in layers, so be patient with yourself. Every positive change you make leads to the next one, so make that commitment to improving your space and, therefore, your life.

natural ways to keep your brain healthy

By Dr. Susan hibbs

arch is Brain Injury Awareness month. Avoiding trauma to the head resulting in concussions or loss of consciousness is the most important thing you can do to keep your brain healthy. But like we work to keep our bodies in shape, there are also some natural ways to keep your brain in shape.

strengthen cognitive ability

Like your muscles, your brain needs regular workouts to stay healthy. Staying mentally active could reduce your risk of Alzheimers disease or other dementias. Try memorizing song lyrics, doing math in your head, learning a foreign language, playing games or memory exercises, doing crossword puzzles, enrolling in a college course or taking a class on a hobby you enjoy, such as knitting or cooking. Keep your brain learning!

eat brain-healthy foods

Most people dont know that the foods they consume have an effect on their brain. According to the Alzheimers Association, studies have shown that high intake of saturated fat and cholesterol clogs the arteries and is associated with higher risk for Alzheimers disease. Reduce your intake of foods that are high in fat and cholesterol. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, found in spinach, black beans or walnuts, can help fight off disease.

Take your supplements

Supplements such as folic acid, fish oil, ginseng and vitamin B12 can help with your memory and reasoning powers.

Avoid smoking

Smoking damages almost every major organ in the body, and the brain is no exception. Research shows that smoking may thin the outer layer of the brain, the cerebral cortex. That region of the brain is linked to impulse control and decision-making. Tobacco smoking has also been linked to abnormalities such as brain decay. If youre a smoker, quit. Your brain health and the rest of your

since there arent straight lines from genes to disease, doing what you can to live a healthy life will help keep your brain in shape.
organs are at risk.

Get enough sleep

The brain needs rest, just as your body does. If you arent getting enough sleep, you may notice your memory may not be at its peak performance. Try to get eight hours of sleep a night.

stay physically active

Exercising maintains good blood flow to the brain and encourages new brain cells. Research shows that aerobic exercise increases capillary development in the brain, meaning more blood supply, nutrients and oxygen. Staying physically active also helps you maintain a healthy weight, which can significantly lower your risk for a memory disorder.

stay socially active

Those who are regularly engaged in social interaction maintain their brain strength. Research shows that activities that combine physical, mental and social activity are the most likely to prevent dementia. According to the Alzheimers Association, in a study of 800 men and women aged 75 or older, more mentally active and socially engaged participants had lower risk for developing dementia. Of course, some people are genetically predisposed to Alzheimers disease and other dementias, and that cant be changed. While researchers do not know the exact cause of Alzheimers disease, its most likely a combination of a variety of genetic and other factors. Since there arent straight lines from genes to disease, doing what you can to live a healthy life will help keep your brain in shape.

living below your means

By Charles Schmalz

his is going to sound very simplistic but true. The easiest way to build a big nest egg is by spending as little of your money as possible. In other words, live below your means. Its so simple and yet so few people actually do it. Im not suggesting living on beans and driving a junker car. What I am suggesting is making a conscious effort to monitor spending and make cuts where possible. Why would you want to do this in a world where easy credit provides access to the latest electronics, upscale restaurants and dream vacations? There are as many reasons as there are people. It can help guarantee youll have enough for retirement, or that youll

be able to retire early, or pay for college, buy a summer home, take some time off to learn a new career the list goes on and on. Most importantly, living below your means can mean life with a lot less stress. Wouldnt it be nice to not worry about where the money will come from if the car breaks down or the dryer conks out? Wouldnt it be great not to have to juggle bills each month to figure out which can be paid and which have to wait for the

next paycheck? Wouldnt you like to not live from paycheck to paycheck? Trying to make this work can leave you feeling like a salmon swimming upstream. Our entire culture makes it easy for you to get into hock up to your eyeballs. This is the first generation in which we have a credit card economy. We used to have layaway you didnt get something before you could afford it. Were one of the few cultures on the planet where getting ahead is more important than getting by. Many students already have bought into the spending culture. A lot of students have credit cards, loans, theyre going out to nice restaurants on the weekends theyre living beyond their means. Our society promotes more spending, more credit card debt. Most Americans would be much happier if they bucked society, scaled back and reduced debt. Remember, if you earn $1.00 and spend $.99, youre okay. But spend $1.01 and youre heading for trouble. Yet today, spending seems more fashionable than saving. What once was called poor money management has become deficit spending. Whatever its called, it leads to inevitable headaches and heartaches for people, companies and governments. No new economic theory beats this old favorite: a penny saved is a penny earned. As Calvin Coolidge once said, There is no independence quite so important as living within your means. Dont let your checkbook be the saddest book you ever read. Living below your means can make all the difference for today and tomorrow.

What color is your diet?

By Kim Neher, mS, Clinical Nutritionist

emember ROYGBIV? This mnemonic device is how many of us learned the colors of the rainbow red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Nowadays I use the acronym to represent the colors of food I should be eating. March is National Nutrition Month, and eating the colors of the rainbow is one of the best things we can do for our health. Of course, Im not referring to the popular candy that encourages tasting these brilliant colors, Im talking about fruits and vegetables! Think about the average persons daily meals. Breakfast may start with either cereal and milk, or eggs with pancakes and sausages. As one moves into the lunch hour, grabbing for a burger or sandwich sided with chips, fries, cookies and soda are pretty common. Lastly, envision a typical supper, which is usually based around some sort of meat with potatoes/rice/noodles and a fan favorite veggie known as corn! Close your eyes and picture the colors that were just consumed on an average day brown, white and yellow! Unfortunately, some of the only vegetables that Americans eat are lettuce, tomato and onion because they came with that burger! The proof is in the pigment everyone! And what a wonderful and easy way to protect your health through eating! Consuming a diet rich in plant foods will provide a vast amount of phytochemicals,

or nonnutritive substances in plants, that possess health-protective effects preventing and treating chronic disease. Phytochemicals are both anti-inflammatory and tissue-specific for the body. The best part? The benefits come from consuming mixtures of the fruits and vegetables, not just a single few, leaving us with many options to select from natures pharmacy! Challenge yourself to eat foods from each color every day. There is only so much benefit received from eating the same thing all the time; rotation and variety is key! The following are a few examples of where to find these phytochemical colors and their specific healing properties:
red: lycopene or anthocyanins, help to reduce several types of cancer risks (especially prostate) and serve as a powerful antioxidant protecting from cell damage. Beets Radishes Red Apples Cherries Pink Grapefruit Pomegranates Red Peppers Strawberries Watermelon Red Potatoes Rhubarb Red Cabbage Cranberries Red Grapes Raspberries Tomatoes

Orange/Yellow: carotenoids help to maintain healthy mucous membranes and eyes. They also may reduce risk of cancers, heart disease, and can improve immune system function. Butternut/Yellow Apricots Papayas Squash Cantaloupe Peaches Carrots Grapefruit Pears Pumpkin Lemons Pineapple Yellow Peppers Mangoes Tangerines Yellow Tomatoes Nectarines Yellow Apples Oranges

Blue/Purple: anthocyanidins are anti-aging, protecting ones brain health and nerve tissue, and controlling blood pressure and heart health. Purple Kale Purple Grapes Purple Blueberries Cabbage Blackberries Purple Boysenberries Potatoes Raisins Eggplant Figs Plums

Green: chlorophyll, lutein, zeaxanthin and indoles serve to maintain vision health, atherosclerosis and also protect against some forms of cancer.

Dean of Blue Sky Massage School passionate about changing lives
By Alison Eggert and Jackie Peters

touches
aren Lewis-Weigle has always wanted to help people, but it wasnt until a life-changing motorcycle accident at the age of 21 that things would be set into motion. A number of surgeries on her leg and physical therapy still had her doctors saying that she would never walk normally and would need a brace the rest of her life. Out of desperation, I had to start looking for an alternative, says Karen, recalling that her grandfather always believed in caring for and treating the whole body. Karen drew from her grandfathers knowledge and sought out more and more information on nutrition, herbology and natural healing. Working with natural healers, she was able to custom design a therapy program that included meditation; quieting her mind to allow her body to heal. Karen eventually regained strength and movement in her leg. After this struggle, she knew that she wanted to help people using natural methods. I wanted to revitalize and rehabilitate others without causing pain, says Karen.

touch the lives of others

In 1978, Karen started studying massage therapy in Michigan; by 1983 she was working at a holistic medical practice. Karen had decided to start teaching patients about healthy living, noting that people can heal faster if they know how to take care of themselves. She didnt know it at the time, but the first Blue Sky classes had been born. Since then, Karen has studied and worked with well-known professionals in her field from studying homeopathy in Greece to yogic traditions and philosophies in India and at the Himalayan Institute in Pennsylvania. Fast forward a quarter of a century and there are three Blue Sky School of Professional Massage and Therapeutic Bodywork (Blue Sky) locations around the state. And it didnt stop there. Karen created Blue Sky as a non-profit, enabling a local and global connection. Ive always had a desire to do more, says Karen. I believe in going the extra distance. To date, Blue Sky has contributed to building a hospital in Dehradun, India, and the first free library in Kumbo, Cameroon, which has created reading programs to help illiteracy problems in Africa. Blue Sky has financially contributed to village schools in Allahabad, India as well. The school takes a very holistic and diversified approach with the goal of graduating massage therapists who really care about people and reach out and touch the community through educational opportunities and massage services. This approach, combined with Karens energy, has had a ripple effect on its students. After 27 years, Blue Sky has graduates all over the world, who continue and embrace Karens vision to really touch the lives of others Blue Skys motto. Today, Blue Sky has a distinguished reputation, national accreditation and state approval. The accreditation is important, especially in these economic times, as it allows us to offer federal financial aid to those who qualify, says Alison Eggert, marketing coordinator for Blue Sky. The school also stands out because it offers programs/tracks with a minimum of 853 hours, with the state requirement being 600 hours. Students appreciate the convenient hours, specialized seminars, national speakers and instructors who work in the profession and own their own businesses. Chris Wolf, an alumnus from Green Bay and massage practice owner, values this comprehensive education. I was taught everything you need to get out the door and get started with your own business, she says. The larger skill set that we have to help people upon graduation really allows us to go above and beyond for our clients. When looking back at her Blue Sky education, Wolf recalls, It was the best life-changing experience I ever had. In 2010, Sheila Schaller found herself working as a metal fabricator looking for fulfillment in her life. Thats when she met someone, a massage therapy student, who inspired her to go back to school. Schaller took a leap of faith and enrolled at Blue Sky, the same school that came so highly recommended to her by that student she had met and many others. Bhakti yoga: The path of devotion

By Deb Sommerhalder, e-ryt

ncient yoga practitioners thought of yoga as a living tree with roots and six branches coming from the trunk. The branches represent the styles of yoga, with the most wellknown one to the west being Hatha, the yoga of physical processes. The other branches are: Bhakti devotion and the heart Jnana path of knowledge, yoga of the mind Karma what we experience now is created by our past actions raja royal yoga, cultivation of the mind with meditation tantra ritual as a means of experiencing the divine in everything

Within each of the branches there are additional forms. Lets explore the branch of Bhakti, the path most followed in India. The term Bhakti comes from the root Bhaj, which means to be attached to God. There are nine forms of Bhakti: 1. Sravana hearing of Gods stories 2. Kirtana singing of Gods glories 3. Smarana remembrance of Gods name and presence 4. Padasevana service of Gods feet 5. archana worship of God 6. vandana prostration to God 7. Dasya cultivating the Bhava (feeling, emotion, mood) of a servant with God 8. Sakhya cultivation of the friend Bhava 9. atmanivedana complete surrender to the Self In the West we are embracing Bhakti yoga in the form of Kirtan. This call and response format of chanting of mantras is said to be one of the supreme forms of yoga. David Newman (Durga Das) describes it like this: Those who practice this form of yoga feel more in tune with their inherent joy and happiness, which is the ultimate goal of yoga. Kirtan practice is an intimate and powerful reflection of inner joy, yet it is hard to describe if you havent experienced it. People may become exposed to Kirtan through yoga, and may first simply like the music, and then tune into the vibration. They may see a local Kirtan band, or a traveling wallah and their experience grows from there. Every time you sing Kirtan, there is a little opening, a beam of light that expands your connection to your inner joy. The more you practice, the more that expands until it pops and we experience an awakening. That is the ultimate goal: With repeated exposure, we realize who we are.

Can we talk about iBs?

By Scott vander wielen, DC
t is estimated that 10 to 20% of the population suffers from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). By and large, women are afflicted more often than men, and as much as 38% of children suffer from IBS or functional abdominal pain weekly. The medical research admits that finding an effective treatment using medications remains a challenge. The severity of the symptoms associated with IBS varies from person to person, and for years sufferers have been told that little to nothing can be done to help. If you suffer from IBS, there is hope! There is an effective approach to IBS besides taking prescribed symptom-based medications. What if it were possible to get to the root cause of the IBS so you wouldnt have to deal with all the medications and their side effects, with little or no

improvement? Recent medical research shows that lifestyle medicine is the most effective path to managing IBS. Lifestyle medicine uses food, nutrition and lifestyle choices that are based on how your body is functioning. This approach to health is called functional medicine. So what would the functional medicine approach to IBS look like? We first need to understand that the label of IBS says absolutely nothing as to the source of the dysfunction. The why and how behind the diagnosis of IBS still remains undefined. Answering the why and how will involve diagnostic testing and asking the right questions. Does the patient have a heavy metal toxicity causing a series of immune and bowel reactions? Does the patient suffer from small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)? According to medical research, the odds ratio is 5:1 that SIBO has gone undiagnosed. Is there a vitamin D deficiency which has been shown to be associated with unregulated immune responses? Does the patient have pathogenic organisms, parasites or a gluten sensitivity? Over 90% of patients with gluten sensitivity are undiagnosed. Is there gall bladder dysfunction

56

or pancreas dysfunction? The list of possibilities is extensive and needs to be sorted out so the why and how can be defined. The patients medical history and family history are also significant and can answer as much as 90% of the mystery behind the why and how. Lastly, a detailed physical exam should be performed. Once this has been completed, a therapeutic target can be established and an effective treatment plan can be designed and implemented using lifestyle changes, nutrition and food. Food choices will affect symptoms for IBS. FODMAP, which stands for Fermentable Oligo-Di-Monosaccharides and Polyols, is an acronym that was coined to describe different kinds of carbohydrates and sugar alcohols (polyols). They comprise fructose, lactose, fructo-, fructans and galactans, and alcohol sugars such as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol and maltitol, all of which affect our digestion differently. FODMAPs are poorly digested in the small intestine, are rapidly fermented and can significantly worsen many of the IBS symptoms, including constipation. A top tier medical journal published a study in 2010 concluded that a low FODMAP diet improves IBS symptoms, which include abdominal discomfort, abdominal bloating, excessive flatulance, nausea, heartburn and tiredness. A complete list of high FODMAP and low FODMAP foods can be downloaded free for your review at www.HealthyMeToday.com. Gluten free and the game

By Janet Novitski

n the past few years you may have heard of professional athletes having amazing performances and crediting a glutenfree diet for their success. While some athletes are compelled to make this change because they have been diagnosed with celiac disease, or gluten intolerences, others are finding that a gluten-free diet is a simply superior nutritional choice for them.

Professional tennis player, Novak Djokovic, who switched to a gluten-free diet last year, just won the U.S. Open. His 2011 win-loss record was 70-6, winning an

incredible10 titles, including three of four majors: the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. When his nutritionist determined last

year that he was allergic to gluten, he eliminatedgluten from his diet, lost weight and says he quickly felt sharper. This is common for people who experience brain fog from eating gluten. Since the dietary change, Djokovic is able to breathe better and take in more oxygen. His body is much healthier and this is the key, says Djokovics Coach. Our very own Green Bay Packers running back, James Starks, has followed a nutritionists advice andstarted a glutenfree diet of his own; as a result, he has healed faster, gained the right kind of weight and gotten stronger. Also, Kyle Korver of the Chicago Bulls switched to a gluten-free diet in 2010 to boost his performance, but has noticed an improvement in his post-game recovery as an added benefit. How could we leave out the GarminCervlo Team (professional bikers for the Tour de France) a team made up of superstars like ThorHushovd, Tyler Farrar, David Millar, Tom Danielson, Julian Deanand Christian Vande Velde. Basically the entire team made the switch to reduce inflammation. For the Tour de France, one

of the biggest goals participants have is to maintain as low a state of inflammation as possible. The amount of inflammation that the riders bodies accumulate during the day is so high that any little bit of help they can get, and this includes dietary modifications, is essential. An anti-inflammatory diet, it is believed, aids the bodys natural mending process, allowing athletes to recover more quickly for their next event. Theyget their requisite carbs from sweet potatoes, gluten-free cereals, quinoa and rice-based breads, and other GF pastas. By eating this way, athletes reported having better digestion, quicker recovery time, great sleep and better performance. Any athlete will say that food is the key to function. While no one should jump into a gluten-free diet without researching the pros and cons, it is certainly an option athletes can explore as they seek to achieve their goals.

Get healthy soil with compost tea

By todd rockweit

or the past year you have read our articles that described what is happening in the soil and the potential problems that can occur if that life cycle is disrupted either chemically or through our own use of the land. Today I would like to talk to you about a tool that homeowners and gardeners can use to help get back your healthy soil compost tea. Brewing high-quality compost tea with consistent results is a challenge (much like brewing good-quality coffee or beer), which is why its critical to source the highest-quality compost and nutrients as well as utilize the best equipment and processes

that will not harm the biology. Brewing compost tea can be as simple as a fivegallon bucket and compost processed from home or as complex as a 250-gallon brewer, bio-assay tested compost, and an assortment of nutrients and soil additives, which is the approach that Backyard Organics takes. In addition to the technical design of the equipment and the science behind the formulations, timing of the applications is critical. Compost tea is a live, active, aerobic blend of microbes, which are rapidly expanding and can become unfavorable if they run out of nutrients and become anaerobic. Applying compost

tea with the first 48 of a finished brew cycle is critical to receiving a quality product. A good-quality compost tea has a quantity and diversity of microbes. Compost teas that achieve high quantities and a good diversity of bacteria, fungi, nematodes and protozoas are able to combat a larger variety of symptomatic issues. Each community, each neighborhood and each yard have unique soil needs. Having a high count and a diverse group of microbes ensures consistent results. Also, applications within a yard can vary, which is why its important to be able to understand the differences between a fungal-dominated need versus a bacterially dominated need. For example, certain grasses prefer a more bacterially dominated compost whereas certain trees and shrubs prefer more fungal activity. This is why its always important to test your soils prior to applying amendments.

Verified benefits of compost tea

Improves soil structure and porosity creating a better plant root environment Increases moisture infiltration and permeability, and reduces bulk density of heavy soils improving moisture infiltration rates and reducing erosion and runoff Improves the moisture holding capacity of light soils reducing water loss and nutrient leaching, and improving moisture retention

Improves the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soils Supplies organic matter Aids the proliferation of soil microbes Supplies beneficial microorganisms to soils and growing media Encourages vigorous root growth Allows plants to more effectively utilize nutrients while reducing nutrient loss by leaching Enables soils to retain nutrients longer Contains humus assisting in soil aggregation and making nutrients more available for plant uptake Buffers soil pH In addition to the numerous biological benefits, compost tea also has a practical side that can greatly benefit the homeowner. Compost tea, whether you brew it yourself or have someone apply it for you, can be applied as a foliar feeder. Feeding the leaves of plants, shrubs and trees, efficiently uptakes nutrients, stimulates the plant rhizosphere and acts as a protector against harmful leaf diseases. Also, compost tea is much easier to spread and

faster acting than compost with the same biological benefits of a compost top dressing application (we would still recommend compost application if your soil is lacking organic matter).

Here is what a few experts in the field have to say about compost tea:

Aerated compost teas are the latest in scientific organic research today. In many ways, aerated teas offer greater immediate benefits than classic compost, manure or other homemade foliar teas The Garden Web Good tea is worth the trouble to brew because it can transform your lawn and garden Paul Tukey, author of the Organic Lawn

organization, sums the benefits of compost teas up best The use of actively aerated tea, when applied under a proper management regime, returns beneficial biology to the soil. This in turn rebuilds a soil food weed which, reduced dependency on fertilizers and pesticides, improves plant growth and reduces disease, significantly reduces water use, reduces toxicity and encourages the healthy establishment of healthy biology Dr. Elaine Ingham, President
and Director of Research at Soil Foodweb, Inc.

Compost tea is one of the inputs on the horizon that will change the way we deal with several of the management aspects of growing high-quality turfgrass, either in your backyard, on your towns parks and athletic fields, or on commercial and institutional properties Chip Osborne, Osborne Organics Dr. Elaine Ingham, a leading researcher and founder of the Soil Food Web

Backyard Organics firmly believes in the benefits of organic land care and agrees with Chip Osborne and experts in the field who believe that compost teas will be one of those tools that will change the way we deal with land care in the future.

elder care: When is it time to intervene?

By Kate mcCarthy

fter the holiday madness settles and winter sets in, families often notice that their elderly loved ones have care issues that need to be addressed. Suggesting the need for extra help coming into the home or introducing the idea of moving into an assisted living situation is a difficult and sensitive subject to raise. Many elderly refuse to face that their health-related challenges or limitations due to aging are serious enough to warrant action. Fear of treading on their loved ones privacy and independence often limits families from broaching the subject and taking an active role.

So how do you know if it is the right time to take action? There are several areas that family members need to look at when determining if it is the right time to intervene in their elderly loved ones lives. medical issues Often a diagnosis of a disease, illness or injury affects the quality of daily life and requires active intervention. medication issues Difficulties in managing medication dosage and frequency, or confusion in changes in prescriptions can result in pills that are not taken and pose a risk that needs to be addressed. Behavior issues Changes in behavior such as excessive anxiety, irritability, or social withdrawal or depression can be the signal that there are underlying cognitive issues, such as Alzheimers or dementia, that should be checked. Nutritional issues Lack of healthy, nutritional food in the house, lack of balanced meals, inability to manage grocery shopping, or clean out spoiled food from the fridge all point to the need for help. mobility issues Unexplained dents and scratches on the car can indicate changes in reflexes, vision, and ability to respond to unexpected situations and can be signals that continuing driving poses a great risk. hygiene issues Noticeable body odors, lack of basic hygienic tasks and grooming, and inability to choose clothing all are common signs that help is necessary. housekeeping issues Daily living tasks such as cleaning, cooking and laundry, plus managing the household finances becomes difficult at some point for the aging. When these tasks are continuously left undone it is a clear indication that intervention is necessary. Safety issues Forgetfulness about keeping the house locked and secure, carelessness with lit cigarettes and gas stoves, and lack of safety features in the bathroom can all lead to accidents and are issues that require active family intervention. When first raising the subject of getting additional help in the home or the need to move to an assisted living facility, it is important to include your loved one in the conversation. Involving them in the

discussion can alleviate some of their anxiety about making life changes and make choosing a solution less stressful for all involved. Remember the goal is to find a solution that provides the amount of care your loved one needs, while maintaining as much independence as possible. It takes time and energy to sift through all the options available. That is why it is a good idea to research all the elder care solutions ahead of time. Then when it is time to intervene, you and your loved one can make a smooth transition.

lmost every plant contains some essential oil. Essential oils can be found in the petals, as in roses, but it can also be found in roots, leaves, bark or resin. Essential oils are fragrant; the smell when you crush lavender, or peel an orange, is the essential oil exploding into the air as it is released. These oils are molecules produced as part of the plants survival mechanism and are stored within the plant, then released when needed. In different plants, they have different functions: preventing insect attack; protecting against bacteria and fungi; attracting insects to pollinate; or healing wounds. Essential oils are extracted from the plant matter primarily through steam distillation and other methods, such as CO2 extraction. In the steam distillation process, pressurized steam is passed through the plant matter. The steam evaporates and the water is collected leaving the essential oils. The water that remains is known as hydrosol, hydrolat or aromatic water, which is also used in aromatherapy. Essential oils are highly volatile, meaning they evaporate and disperse as soon as they are exposed to the air. In effect, this means they are exploding into our olfactory system when we take the lid off of a bottle. Once the molecules are in the moist lining of the nose they pass quickly into the blood and to the brain via the nervous system. The olfactory area of the brain lies within the limbic system. This system is concerned with instincts, mood, emotion and memory, and through the hypothalamus, these can be transformed into physical responses. In most English speaking countries, aromatherapy for humans involves massage as the primary medium of delivering the essential oils. When using essential oils with animals, we use their ability to self-medicate. This system was first developed by Caroline Ingraham, who studied aromatherapy and kinesiology with Robert Tisserand in the late 1980s. Soon afterward she
www.naturespathwaysonline.com

64

Natures Pathways | March 2012

started to experiment with using essential oils with her own pets, saving a dog she had adopted from starving and another dog from a rattlesnake bite. Because of these successes she further explored the use of essential oils with animals. During this time, she noticed that animals would show a definite preference for one essential oil over another, depending on their life experiences and present problems. They would very clearly indicate with which oils they wanted to be treated. In 1995, Caroline set up her first training course to teach others what she had learned. From there, todays modern method of using aromatics with animals has developed with its clear emphasis on allowing animals to self medicate. So how do we use essential oils with animals? We allow animals to use their innate ability to self medicate. If left to their own devices they pick and choose herbs, nuts, grasses and even different types of dirt that they need to maintain their health. Have you ever seen a dog drinking out of a mud puddle when he has a perfectly clean bowl of water to drink from in the house? When choosing essential oils with animals, we make use of this instinct and allow the animals to guide us in their healing. Once the oils are selected and diluted, they are offered to the animal and their responses are read, which tells us how often and how long they want the oil, along with if they want it applied to their body or if a different means is more appropriate. Each species has specific patterns of response but the character of each individual animal must also be taken in to account. Shy, withdrawn animals must be given time to interact; greedy enthusiastic types need to have time to settle down and fully engage in the experience. Patience is one of the most important aspects of offering essential oils to animals. Offering the oils should be at a quiet time that is free of distractions and without hurry; healing happens in an environment of totally being with each other.

Mullein
(Verbascum thapsus)
By Cheryl hosmer

ullein has many nicknames, including torches, candlewick plant, velvet dock and, my favorite, campers toilet paper. The names describe how the plant looks. Mullein is a tall stately plant. Once you recognize it in an uncut field or roadside you wont forget it. Mullein is a biennial plant, so the first year of growth a rosette of large, gray-green, fuzzy, soft leaves are at the base of the plant. The second years growth of this plant creates a dramatic five- to seven-foot stalk of leaves with a flower spike about twelve inches long covered with tiny yellow flowers. Mullein is very rich in iron and contains vitamins A and B-complex, as well as minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Mullein also contains polysaccharides, which have mucilaginous properties. The

cooling, soothing properties of the mucilage lubricate tissues reduce inflammation, act as an expectorant and enhance healing. Mullein has many medicinal uses and the leaves, flowers and roots can be used. This herbs gentle nature makes it one of the best for childrens health problems. The seed is not recommended and is said to be slightly narcotic. Mullein is most commonly associated with respiratory problems, providing soothing relief to the lungs and throat. This herb is especially good for a dry, irritated cough. Mullein can relax muscle spasms, and it also has diuretic and antiseptic properties.

Mullein can stimulate the expectoration of excess phlegm. Mullein oil can be made by putting the flowers in olive oil in a closed container and leaving it in the warm sunlight or near a warm stove for two to three weeks. The flowers are then strained off and the oil can be used as is or 10% alcohol can be added to preserve it. This oil, warmed slightly, is commonly used in Germany for earaches and hemorrhoids. Mullein oil can be applied externally to relieve itching and help heal boils or sores. Mullein tea is very soothing to the throat. The tea would be made by steeping the leaves in boiling water. The tea should be strained through cheesecloth or coffee filter, to remove the fine hairs on the leaves, before drinking. The combination of herbs mullein and lobelia are excellent for lymphatic stagnation and lung/respiratory issues. Mullein can also be very healing to the intestinal tract. The only precaution is to not use the oil in the ear if you have a perforated ear drum.

Health care at home

By Dawn ristow

ith the oldest baby boomers becoming 66 this year, the idea of retirement for this huge contingency is now reality. That means the number of individuals who will be needing health care is going to be significant in the coming years. Now, consider that the parents of the people in this group are in their 80s and 90s, the ages where additional care becomes necessary. That leaves a lot of people who need to be aware of whats available for health care options. Whether it be for you or for your loved one, it is important to consider one care option available in the comfort of ones own home. Home health care aids do just that. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, home health care aides assist those with disabilities or elderly individuals who may need assistance to remain in their own home. These aides do various tasks such as: cleaning, laundry, shopping and meal preparation. On a more personal side, these aides can also assist with toileting, bathing, grooming, dressing/undressing, prescribed exercises and

medication reminders and/or administration. The National Association for Home Care and Hospice says that home health care is a cost effective alternative to hospital stays. nutrition and gum disease

By michael J. Pierquet, D.D.S.

eve been in a battle against gum disease for a long time. And still we have up to 75% of adults with bleeding gums, and gum disease as the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. And whats even worse is that gum disease has now been implicated as a risk factor in almost every major disease! There are several reasons for these sad statistics, perhaps none more important than the failure to recognize the role of proper

nutrition in stopping gum disease. Gum disease occurs when mouth bacteria invade the gum tissues causing infection and inflammation in the gum tissues and bone around the teeth. Proper nutrition impacts the never-ending battle against gum disease in four ways. First of all, these bacteria thrive on junk food. That means that every time you eat junk food, you are feeding the bad bugs just what they need to multiply, thrive and cause more damage. This means that improper diet has a direct effect on how much damage bacteria cause in your mouth. The second factor is that the gum tissues form a tight physical barrier around your teeth that seals out the bacteria from the gum tissues and the rest of your body. The gum tissues are under continuous assault from bad bugs 24 hours a day. To be an effective barrier and repel bacterial invaders, the gums have to be healthy. Having a HEALTHY soft tissue barrier is a critical factor in winning the never ending battle against the bacteria that live in your mouth. Proper nutrition is the main factor in keeping the barrier healthy. The third way nutrition impacts gum disease is through effects on your immune system. Your immune system fights off invading

bacteria and helps injured gum tissues heal. If your immune system is compromised due to poor diet and improper nutrition, then obviously it will be less effective in fighting off bacteria. The final way that nutrition affects gum disease is by aiding in the healing process. Remember, once gum disease is present, it means that the gum and bone tissues around the teeth have been injured. These injuries need good nutrition to heal just like any other injury in your body. I believe that it is simply not possible to effectively treat and prevent gum disease without addressing the impact of nutrition. Not understanding the link between gum disease and nutrition is one of the main reasons why 75% of adults still have bleeding gums that are putting them at increased risk for heart disease, cancer, stroke, Alzheimers and other medical problems.

Hanging on or letting go?

By wendy Fahrbach

hat are you holding onto that no longer serves you? This is a question often asked of people attending events at The Chopra Center for Well-Being, Carlsbad, California. The intention of this question is to really consider what sort of dead weight we are lugging around in our lives. Its not so much about understanding why weve lugged it around as just making a decision not to lug it around anymore. Doing so is a kind and loving gift to yourself. Here are 3 steps you can take to move into a kinder, more loving space in your life: give yourself is 10 minutes a day, that time in stillness with yourself is going to help you become more centered. You will feel more deeply, care more compassionately and make decisions based on faith rather than fear. Find a means to learn how to practice this

step 1: Meditate on a regular basis. Even if all you can

life-changing skill. Meditating helps you connect with your own personal Higher Power. Its not about religion, its about spirituality, but the two are not mutually exclusive. A regular meditation practice should benefit any religious practice as it will develop your skill of hearing the messages from your Higher Power. Bottom line: Seek out stillness in every day for greater peace of mind.

something yet to come. Bottom line: Be honest with the changes you need to make in order to be a happier, more fulfilled person.

step 2: Be honest with yourself. When asking yourself

what no longer serves you, it is not about being selfish. The intention behind pondering this is not its all about me. The intention is about reviewing the habits we have of hanging onto things out of familiarity even if they are not healthy for us or dont produce loving outcomes. While we may feel like we have no choice, there are always choices. This is one key area where a regular meditation practice can help open your mind to other options. Are you staying in a job because you are scared to leave it? Or a relationship that soured years ago just because you may not want to be alone? Surely you have other reasons such as, I need the health insurance or I dont want the children to go through a divorce. But what if you sat in stillness with this question and dug to the root of your decision to stay in unfulfilling circumstances? We often find a different root reason for making decisions that result in our continuing unhappiness. We need to believe in something bigger than ourselves. Have faith in a Higher Power! Make time to be around uplifting, positive people. Move beyond the fear and trust that what you are going through will make sense down the road as it is preparing you for

in order to move on, but dont be embarrassed or ashamed of it either. As you think about the events of your life, dump the negative feelings and experiences and just keep the lessons you learned and the love you felt. It really can be that simple! You dont want it. You dont need it. Now let it go and make your move toward change, trusting in your Higher Power that things will be okay. We are stronger emotionally than we give ourselves credit for. This is another way meditating every day can help you. It builds your faith in both yourself and that there is something bigger than us out there. We may feel like were just a speck on the planet in a huge universe, but you know what? Were all made up of the same things at a molecular level. Were all connected. As we move closer to springtime, its a good time to ponder what changes we might make for a happier life. Theres so much wonder to experience. We just need to be honest with ourselves and let go of that which no longer serves us. You can do it. I believe in you.

s springtime approaches, weather warms up and leaves turn green, many people will spend more time outside planting bulbs, mowing the lawn and pulling weeds. Gardening can provide a great workout, but with all the bending, twisting, reaching and pulling, your body may not be ready for exercise of the garden variety. Gardening can be enjoyable, but it is important to stretch your muscles before reaching for your gardening tools. The back, upper legs, shoulders and wrists are all major muscle groups affected when using your green thumb. A warm-up and cool-down period is as important in gardening as it is for any other physical activity.

Performing simple stretches during these periods will help alleviate injuries, pain and stiffness. To make gardening as fun and enjoyable as possible, it is important to prepare your body for this type of physical activity.

Quick tips on stretching

While stretching, breathe in and out slowly, and do not bounce or jerk your body. Do not use the motto no pain, no gain when stretching; stretching should be comfortable, not painful. Lastly, hold stretches for 15-20 seconds, trying to maintain good, well-controlled posture.

Garden fitness stretches

1. While sitting, prop one heel on a stool or step, keeping the knees straight. Lean forward until you feel a stretch in the back of the leg or hamstring. 2. While standing, balance yourself and grab the front of one ankle from behind. Pull your heel toward your buttocks to feel a stretch in the front of the thigh.

74

Natures Pathways | March 2012

www.naturespathwaysonline.com

3. While standing, weave your fingers together above your head with the palms up. 4. Hug your best friend by wrapping your arms around yourself and rotating to one side to stretch. 5. This stretch can be done either lying on your back or standing up. With one leg straight, pull the other knee into the chest toward the opposite shoulder. 6. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Cross your right leg over the other leg, allowing the inside/back of the right thigh to lie on the inside/front of your left thigh. Drop your knees gently to the left to feel a stretch in your low back and buttocks.

heat for chronic injuries, such as overuse injuries, before participating in a physical activity. Do not use heat treatments after activity, and do not use heat after an acute injury. Heat therapy can be done using a heating pad or a hot, wet towel, but be careful to use a moderate heat for a limited time to avoid burns. Never leave heating pads or towels on for extended periods of time, such as while sleeping. Consider chiropractic care. It works on correcting misaligned vertebrae, removing pressure placed on nerve endings that line joint surfaces and span joint spaces, reducing pain and improving flexibility and function. Massage therapy may also help to alleviate muscle aches and pains and improve blood and lymph flow.

When the bulbs are planted

You have been doing your warm-up and cool-down stretches, and you still feel aches and pains from gardening. There are a few more things that you can try in order to alleviate the discomfort. Apply a cold pack for 20 minutes on and 40 minutes off with a thin cloth between the skin and cold pack. This cycle of cold therapy can be done throughout the day as many times as you want. Generally, cold therapy is used for acute pain, which is defined as the time period within 48-72 hours of the onset of pain. It works to decrease inflammation and swelling, and it can be used after the 72-hour acute stage, mainly after activity in order to minimize inflammation. Heat therapy is used in chronic conditions to help relax and loosen tissues, as well as to stimulate blood flow to the area. Use

Garden to relax

Gardening can be therapeutic, making people feel happier and relaxed. Keep it that way, and prevent yourself from needing therapy yourself by doing warm-up and cool-down stretches, icing and/or heating, and visiting your chiropractor for occasional checkups.

went to see Pam at Radiant Health Imaging after reading numerous articles on the benefits of thermography and how it may detect breast cancer years before a mammogram or ultrasound ever could. Thermography can help detect disease or injury by revealing the thermal abnormalities present in the body. Although it is not meant to replace mammograms, ultrasounds or any testing normally done by your practitioner, because they are complementary screening tools, thermography is quite effective in early detection. Heres the difference: thermal imaging screens for abnormal physiology while traditional imaging screens for abnormal structure. Thermal imaging utilizes a hi-tech infrared scanner or camera that takes over 80,000 temperature readings, accurate within 1/100th of a degree, in one click. That data provides a thermal image that can be interpreted by analyzing the colors, patterns and temperature differentials between the right and left side of the human body, through the use of software. In my case, after over two years of ultrasound checkups every six months because of the high rate of breast cancer in my family, I decided to try thermal imaging with Radiant Health when they were in our area because of the additional information

thermal imaging provides. Radiant Health comes to northeast Wisconsin every three months and I was able to see them at Appleton Chiropractic. They also travel to other areas, with a home office based in Iowa. The wonderful thermographers working at Radiant Health have backgrounds in the medical field and are trained to take the images following standard protocols. The interpretations are performed by physicians who are board-certified in thermology. Due to the extensive network of physicians in place, Radiant Health is able to provide a two to three-day turnaround time. And, the cost is less than what I pay to go to the doctor! I felt very comfortable trying this early detection procedure. I went in to my appointment and filled out a short health questionnaire. Pam made me feel very comfortable. She explained how thermal imaging works and that she would like me to come back in three months to compare the images, which is how abnormalities are detected. Unlike your traditional mammogram or ultrasound, this is hands free and you are covered with a privacy screen for your comfort. It is a no touch, no compression, no radiation procedure. They then take images of the area you are having checked, which only takes a couple minutes. There is no pain or discomfort. After the images are

complete, they review them with you. In my case, I will be following up with Pam in three months for another set of images to establish a baseline (like a fingerprint). The temperature data is compared to my original images for change. Once the baseline is confirmed, it will be used for all future comparative analysis. I appreciate the wonderful peace of mind this procedure has provided me. While thermal imaging is a wonderful way to check breast health, it can also be used on all different areas of your body, from head to toe. It was approved by the FDA in 1982. Radiant Health conveniently provides your doctor with a copy of your results as well. Early detection is key in beating any disease or health problem; and that is what Radiant Health provides its clients along with peace of mind. I am recommending that all of my friends and family make appointments for the next time Radiant Health is in the area. I believe taking responsibility for our own health is important. Please be aware, however, that thermography does not replace

emerge from hibernation with rolfing structural integration

By victoria huss

re you emerging from hibernation and feeling stiffness or rigidity in your body? Are you carrying the postures of trudging through snow or bracing against the cold? Would you like to feel more in tune with the upcoming arrival of spring? Rolfing Structural Integration (or Rolfing SI) a dynamic and holistic system of manual therapy and movement education can help free your body from the heavy season of hibernation and hunkering down so that you can feel lighter, better aligned and more flexible. Many of us have become so used to inhabiting our bodies over time that we just get used to feeling or moving in a certain way. As we age and accumulate stress, accidents and years of wear and tear from sitting behind desks or performing repetitive tasks we may find ourselves slowing down, experiencing chronic pain, losing flexibility or just not having our usual pep. Sitting and standing with ease while maintaining proper posture becomes difficult because our bodies have forgotten how to be friends with gravity. Through the Rolfing SI process, a Certified Rolfer helps a client heal a dysfunctional relationship with gravity. Various

fascial segments of the body are addressed in sequential order while a client is taught how to relate differently to his or her environment. By focusing on the fascia body history, accumulation of armoring or chronic tension patterns are released as the body is balanced around a vertical line through a series of ten sessions. Addressing alignment issues may not only make you feel like spring, but can also positively affect you on multiple levels. As bones and muscles can finally do their proper jobs, energy is freed up and the body can now move more efficiently. Functioning of respiration, digestion, circulation and the nervous system is enhanced and the ability to process stress improves. Better balance and body symmetry can shift posture so dramatically that chronic pain often eases or disappears entirely. Many individuals who have experienced Rolfing SI have reported changes in their physical structure to help them connect with themselves in a deeper way that they feel more alive, more aware, and more emotionally and spiritually balanced. Shedding the heaviness and rigidity of

winter will help your body transition more smoothly as you move, flex and expand into the warmer months. A spacious, flexible and balanced body is a more resilient body that will help you to effortlessly spring right into summer!

Victoria L. Huss is the Certified Rolfer of New Possibilities Integration LLC located in Downtown Appleton. She finds joy in helping people unfold and find freedom from rigidity and chronic pain. Victoria offers free 30-minute consultations. For more information, contact her via phone at 920.427.7653 or at www.wisconsinrolfing.com. The mystery behind extra virgin olive oil

By Sara Cujak

hat helps with ulcers, hypertension, heart disease, cancer and sink damage, and also tastes great? Extra virgin olive oil. So, what makes it extra virgin and how can I use it? Imagine picking olives from a grove of trees and placing these olives in a press. The first pressing is called extra virgin, and if done cold, is also known as cold stone press. The Olive Oil Source says today there is no longer first pressing or stone pressing occurring with modern day equipment. Instead, centrifuge and racking is used. According to The Worlds Healthiest Foods, extra virgin is the healthiest of oils as it contains most of the phytonutrients and is .8% acidic. This oil is great for salad dressings, sauting and as finishing oil. Some companies use heat to press the olives. This is not good because you lose the fruit flavors and increase the bitterness and astringency. With this first pressing you also get virgin olive oil. Virgin olive oil is higher in acid, up to 2% according to The Worlds Healthiest Foods, low in phytonutrient levels and is less delicate to your taste buds. This one can stand up to a little bit more heat. Still great for salad dressings and as a finishing oil. Extra virgin and virgin olive oils can be heated to high temperatures, however, they do lose flavor. If you do cook with them, never go above medium heat as you will burn the oil due to its delicacy. Use them instead to enhance flavors and to add body and depth to your dish. Think of it as pairing wine with your dish. You want to enhance it. Now those olives are still in the press so
79
Natures Pathways | March 2012

you continue pressing more and you get pure olive oil, although today pure olive oil is a term no longer used in Europe; it is just olive oil, according to International Olive Oil Control. This oil is refined, which the Olive Oil Source says, is tasteless, odorless and colorless, so it is blended with virgin oil. Perfect for frying, shaving your legs, detangling your hair and using as a lubricant for your kitchen equipment. I also have heard it is a great way to stop snoring. Apparently you drink a tablespoon before going to bed for the night. That I have not tried. And the final category for olive oil is called refined olive oil. According to International Olive Oil Control, this is oil with .3% acidity and has been refined using charcoal or other chemical filters. This is not used for cooking, but is what your sardines are packed in. Now you are done pressing the olives, you have some wonderful oil to use for different purposes. Oh, by the way, dont forget to clean out the press.

For an effortless life, get more than you need and far more than you deserve. Invest 10% of your time to maximize the other 90%. Get love. Let your vision set your goals and guide your life. Expand your vocabulary so you can be and share yourself. Get comfortable with change and chaos. Get a coach.

Many people have life experiences that are incongruent with their true selves. At some point, they allowed the opinions and beliefs of others to become their own. While there is nothing wrong with adopting beliefs that serve, often those beliefs are held on to indefinitely ... even when they no longer serve the greatest good. In fact, they may even be causing harm. One of the hardest concepts for clients to grasp is the difference between hurt and harm. An illustration we can all identify with is a trip to the dentist. To eat lots of candy and sweet snacks can feel fun (initially). If a person is unable to keep their intake in check, they may take in too much and as a result, a cavity develops. They
80
Natures Pathways | March 2012
www.naturespathwaysonline.com

may not notice the cavity (which was developing all along) until it hurts. They contact the dentist, and need to go through the potential pain of having the tooth drilled and the cavity filled. The tooth is restored, but it will not have the same integrity as the initial tooth. Will they be motivated to stop the cycle and adjust their intake of the harmful snacks as a result of the learning? Or will they go right back to the behavior, risking a repeat of the cycle? The scenario works whether you substitute any addiction (alcohol, food, sex, overspending) or addictive behavior (gossiping, complaining, criticism, self-abusive attitude). The way out and onto higher ground is to take responsibility for yourself and your actions, and allow others to do the same. If you intervene in their learning, you intervene in their growth. If youre truly interested in having the life you want, you need to take responsibility for all aspects of it. Working with a life coach who can help you objectively look at your limiting beliefs and encourage you to make the needed changes can be an invaluable experience. And the best coach for you will know that you have all your answers. They will help you become more self-aware, which affords you the opportunity to take your life back into your own hands.

Get your plate in shape this national nutrition Month

By melissa Seith, rD, lD

rowing up, mom may have taught you to not leave the dinner table until your plate was clean. Well, its that mentality still sticking in the minds of Americans today. Unfortunately, the plate we fill has grown about 36%, portion sizes at restaurants have grown up to 50%, serving sizes in packages have grown up to 40% and food hasnt necessarily improved in nutritional quality.1, 2, 3 As a result, Americans are filling up on way more calories than they recognize, developing dangerously large waistlines and increasing the risk of chronic disease.

March is National Nutrition Month and 2012s theme is Get Your Plate into Shape. So take matters into your own hands starting this March and help prevent overeating by making a couple of changes. Try switching to serving yourself on a salad plate instead of an oversized dinner plate, using smaller utensils to control bite size and switching out large cups and bowls for smaller child sizes (unless you

are drinking a calorie-free beverage). Also, note that the FDA has just switched over from the Pyramid to the Plate Method to describe how one should be filling their plate. It suggests that you fill half of your plate with fruits and veggies, split the other half between whole grains and lean protein, and insert low fat dairy into the diet as well. Below is the daily allotment of each of the food groups recommended for the average adult and their size in relation to common items. Use it as a tool to help you control portion size and calories to keep your waist slim!

he green movement continues to grow in the country despite a multi-year global recession, with more solar panels installed in 2011 vs. 2010; more green buildings being erected; and more green consumer products being purchased, according to the 2011 Green Brands Survey. In other words, green isnt going anywhere. One shop that encompasses the green consumer products end of that equation is Just Act Natural in downtown Appleton. This eco-lifestyle store is a one-stop shop for all things green. The shop is a mini department store of sorts, selling items such as organic cotton clothing, reusable bags and bottles, non-toxic cleaners, natural body care, safe toys, baby items, recycled greeting cards, gifts and more. The store opened appropriately on Earth Day, April 22, 2009. Next month the store owners, J.C. and Dianne Paustian, will celebrate the stores three-year anniversary. Its hard to believe itll be three years already, J.C. said. It took us almost three years from concept to opening the doors in 2009, so that means Just Act Natural has been in the forefront of our minds for about six years. The thing that the Paustians wanted to
84
Natures Pathways | March 2012

showcase was the green products themselves. Back several years ago it was hard to pick up and hold a green product. Online green stores have been around a while, but brick-and-mortar green stores not so much. People could order just about anything online, from stainless steel water bottles to an organic cotton baby onesie to safe nail polish, according to J.C. But to actually find it and look at it in a store was pretty difficult. With two small children of their own, the Paustians know how important it is to convey the message of buying the right item that is safe and healthy, not just green. Body care products are big sellers in the store and are also in the category that gets the most research when bringing in something new. Dianne and I look at ingredients on body care products and compare them to the Environmental Working Groups Web site called The Cosmetics Database (www.cosmeticsdatabase.com), J.C. said. They research over 70,000 products and rank them on a hazard scale with zero being the best and 10 being the worst. This is our bible. The homework is done for customers so they dont have to spend time sifting through brands, products or ingredients trying to figure out which ones are safe, healthy or environmentally friendly and which ones are not.

We would never bring anything into the store that we wouldnt use ourselves or on our kids, added J.C. Theres just so much greenwashing going on today that consumers have to be careful in what theyre buying. Greenwashing is a term used when a product or company markets itself as green or environmentally friendly and it isnt. A company is inventing a bogus green logo; claiming something is recyclable when it isnt; calling something organic when in fact, that word has no legal definition outside of the food industry; etc. One green logo that is king of the hill is Green Americas Seal of Approval, which Just Act Natural can proudly display. The store is also listed in the National Green Pages the Yellow Pages of authentic green businesses and services across the country, J.C. said.
Just Act Natural is located at 129 E. College Avenue in downtown Appleton. Store hours are: Monday Friday 10am 6pm; Saturday 10am 4pm; closed Sundays. Go to www. justactnatural.com for more information; find them on Facebook and Twitter; e-mail at info@justactnatural.com; or call 920.574.2932.

The Consumer Choice and Wellness Act

Bill SB-280
By Jane hamilton & Jesse martinez

urrently there is a battle behind the scenes that is hidden and out of sight for the average citizen. It has not been publicized, but there is a movement throughout the country with the goal to legislate your rights of freedom of choice for your healthcare away from you. Conversely, there is another movement of grassroots support, which is fighting to keep your healthcare rights of self-determination safe. The movement of self-determination regarding healing and wellness continues to grow and expand. According to a study conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in conjunction with the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 40% of the population utilizes alternative healing. Yet in spite of the growing group of Americans that are taking more control of their healthcare by choosing a variety of alternative modalities, either as a complement to their traditional medicine or as their exclusive choice of wellness; there is an opposing movement to eliminate those alternatives choices. Generally alternative practitioners are unlicensed practitioners such as herbalists, homeopaths, naturopaths, nutritionists, aroma therapists, reflexologists, body-mind healing practitioners, yoga teachers, mediation instructors, Chinese herbal practitioners, energy workers and complementary health practitioners. Any modality practitioner who may make a health or wellness claim in association with their services may be in danger of violating medical or licensing laws. Although only a technicality, these practitioners may be charged with a violation leading to unwarranted superfluous disciplinary action or criminal charges. Some states are taking direct action to stop alterative providers from practicing. Pennsylvania currently has a bill in Committee, Pennsylvania H.B. 1717, which if passed
Natures Pathways | March 2012

would effectively eliminate all alternative healthcare and wellness availability. It would criminalize practicing anything with in the proposed definition of naturopathic medicine, regardless whether it poses risk of harm to the public. The definition of the bill would essentially make hydrotherapy, topical medicines, food, vitamins, minerals, dietary supplements, homeopathy remedies and essentially all alternative practices criminal. The passage of this bill effectively eliminates alternative choices in that state. One wonders why those legislators sponsoring the bill, paid lobbyists and those employing the lobbyists have the need to control individual healthcare choices. Whats in it for them? The continuation of alternative medicine threatens not the consumer, but rather those wealth-accumulating industries and individuals, such as large medical conglomerates and the giant pharmaceutical companies. They stand the most to gain by the elimination of alternative healthcare and complementary practitioners. The persecution of alternative medicine continues in Australia as 400 doctors, medical researchers and scientists petition Australian universities, where one in three offer courses in some form of alternative therapy or complementary medicine, to close down those alternative degrees. The FDA continues to target a variety of supplements, including B6, natural thyroid hormones, bioidentical hormones and countless other natural products. Next on the FDAs list to ban is IV vitamin C, which demonstrates a variety of benefits in working with many conditions. It will be necessary to obtain these from a medical doctor and not your homeopathic or natural practitioner. Over 200 years ago when our Constitution was penned, Dr. Benjamin Rush warned us about the loss of medical freedom. Dr. Rush was a noted physician, professor of medicine and Surgeon General to all Continental

armies. As a signer of the Declaration of Independence representing Pennsylvania at the Continental Congress he said, Unless we put medical freedom into the constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize into an undercover dictatorship to restrict the art of healing to one class of Men and deny equal privileges to others. The Constitution the Republic should make a special privilege for medical freedoms as well as religious freedom. There is a grassroots movement here in the state of Wisconsin to pass a bill that would confirm and insure citizens rights to continue to self-determine regarding their health and wellness choices. The Consumer Choice and Wellness Act, Bill SB-280, is sitting at a standstill in committee. Once passed, this Act of only 7 pages will secure practitioners right to practice their alternative modality and allow the citizens of Wisconsin to choose their own path to wellness. WI for Choice in Wellness, a non-profit organization of unpaid members has been reaching out to circulate petitions for support of this bill. President Steve Lankford said that one of the goals of this organization is to try and move the bill from committee to a vote on the Wisconsin House and Senate floors before the session ends in April. With enough support from the people of Wisconsin this bill has a great chance of passage. As one practitioner, Nicki Jansma, owner of Remedies LLC Holistic Natural Wellness Center, stated, Because your life is the consequences of your decisions it should not be the governments decision to determine what the consequences of your life are, especially in healthcare.

is listening the forgotten skill?

By Diane Beatty

lthough listening is the most utilized method for learning, it is typically the least understood function of all. Many of us, when thinking about listening, see it the same as hearing because, for most of us, hearing is instinctive and automatic. This can lead to little effort being put into developing and learning how to really listen. Listening is a key component in communication. It requires us to be engaged, and to use energy and intellect. A good listener has not only learned the skill but also continually works at it. Poor listening can cause poor communication resulting in an array of problems in our personal and professional lives. Frustration, embarrassment, loss of much-needed information, misunderstanding and hurt feelings can all be avoided with the use of good listening skills. Conversely, the use of good listening skills can create a sense of connection and well being for both the speaker and the listener, causing a deeper understanding and mutual respect. What kind of listener are you? As a baby we first experience listening. One may easily argue it starts already in the womb. Initially and profoundly influenced by our parents. We learn that if we are quietly lying in the crib there is usually no reaction. However, if we cry, laugh or even move around, we learn that we have created a response. Even if the response is negative, we still learn that we being heard causes some kind of a reaction. As we grow, we continue to receive messages from authority figures and peers possibly compounding our initial decision about listening. Perhaps the message was sent children should be seen and not heard. These messages can be reinforced with body language as well. From this place we learn that we are either listened to or ignored. From those experiences decisions were made as to how we listened or merely heard others. A good listener works at developing the skill. Keeping an open mind without personal agenda allows the listener to really tune
Natures Pathways | March 2012

Keeping an open mind without personal agenda allows the listener to really tune into the speaker.
into the speaker. Nonverbal acknowledgments such as eye contact, nodding of the head and open arms can relax the speaker, allowing for an easier delivery of the information. Mirroring body language and what you perceive the other person is feeling or saying can create a place of common ground. Think about someone you perceive to be a good listener. What attributes do they display? Are they attentive, interested and listening with understanding? Do they re-cap or paraphrase for clarity? Does their listening style present a feel of authenticity and trust? Notice perhaps how smoothly their personal and business relationships run. Look at the correlation between their listening skill, communication and success in life. Perhaps from this place you are at a good spot to analyze your own listening skills. Looking for gaps and opportunities for improvement may make a noted difference in your communication and relationship with others.

Think positive!
By trish Poole

he benefits a person can derive from positive thinking and imagining positive outcomes is gaining more credibility in the scientific and medical fields than ever before. In his book The Brain That Changes Itself, Norman Doidge, M.D. brings together fascinating research that demonstrates what many of us already know; that positive thinking can lead to positive results. Scientists do research. Ideally, they help us discern the truth about the world around us. Sometimes it may seem as if scientists are attempting to un-do belief, in this instance belief and facts work together to show that our imagination is more powerful than we think. As a professional working with the mind-body-spirit connection to help others accomplish goals and to support their healing, it is exciting to uncover scientific research in neuroplasticity. Take Alvaro Pascual-Leone, chief of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, part of the Harvard Medical School, for example. In 1995 The Journal of Neurophysiology published Pascual-Leones research results in which he used the tool of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) to test whether mental practice and imagination can lead to physical changes in ones body; and found that indeed it does. Drs. Guang Yue and Kelly Cole showed

When we are attempting to create a new behavior or respond in a new way to an old situation we must first rehearse it.
that imagining one is using ones muscles actually strengthens them, in their research published in The Journal of Neurophysiology in 1992. Brain scans show that the same parts of our brain light up during the brain scan whether we are actually moving parts of our body or imagining moving parts of our body. That is why visualizing can improve performance.1 When we are attempting to create a new behavior or respond in a new way to an old situation we must first rehearse it. We must visualize it in our imagination; this is why hypnosis has been found to be so effective in changing negative habits, managing stressful situations, improving sports performance and more because in hypnosis the client imagines accomplishing the change in a positive and successful way. The first time the client imagines success, s/he lays down a new neuronal pathway and as the client visualizes it more and more, s/he strengthens the new neuronal pathway for the new habit, stress response, sports improvement, etc. So when the challenge presents itself, the clients brain now has another choice; it doesnt have to run the same old neural pathway, it can run the new positive one for good habits, healthy stress response, improved sports performance, etc.

Taught by Dr. Steven Farmer The shamanic journey is one of the most fundamental skills shamans and shamanic practitioners possess. Through the use of drumming or rattling the shaman intentionally sends an aspect of her soul to travel to an alternate spiritual domain called non-ordinary reality. There she meets up with helping spirits to seek advice for helping an individual, family or community, returning with guidance, ceremonies or rituals that are given to her by the spirits. You dont have to be a shaman or shamanic practitioner to learn this very powerful process, one that cannot only be beneficial to yourself,
