School Environment and Learner Analysis WCES is an elementary school located in Pooler, GA. Pooler is a suburb of Chatham County, GA. According to the 2010 Census Demographics, the current population of Pooler is 26,438 persons. The average household income is $47,485 with an average house value of $95,100. The average persons per household is 2.59. The median age of Pooler citizens is 32 years old. WCES is an established elementary school, built in 1999. The first year that WCES was open the student population was 342. Today the student population is 839. The school is home to 96 members of faculty and staff, of which 64% have advanced degrees. It is the generally considered one of the best elementary schools in the district. WCES is a Distinguished Title I school. It has made AYP for the last 11 consecutive years. The grade levels represented in WCES are pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. There are a total of 839 students (434 male/405 female). The ethnic make up of the student population is as follows: 45% African American, 38% White (non-Hispanic), 9% Hispanic, and 8% other. There are 97 students (12%) in the school receiving SPED services. There are only two ESOL students in the school. For the purposes of this assignment, I will be focusing on the pre-k and kindergarten grades. There are a total of 223 pre-k and kindergarten students. The majority of the students are White or African American. There are approximately 25 students receiving SPED services in these grades. Typically, pre-k students and kindergartners are not yet true "readers." But, there are a few readers that can read on a .5-1.9 or BR level. Pre-k teachers utilize WSO (Work Sampling Online) and teacher observations for student assessment. Kindergarten teachers use GKIDS and teacher observations for student assessment. The WCES Media Center is accessible throughout the instructional day. It holds extended hours one hour before and after the school day. Student in grades PK-1st may check out one book per visit. Students in grades 2nd-5th may check out two books per visit. Teachers do not have an official limit on the number of materials they are allowed to check-out, but they may only hold them for 30 days. There are approximately 21,200 books in inventory at this time. The average monthly circulation is 5,855. Multi-media resources available to faculty and students include audio, video, and e-books, promethian planet, educational databases, digital cameras/recorders, and multimedia carts for the classrooms. There are also 30 laptops and 5 desktop computers available for student use in the media center. The media center has a website that links to the school's virtual library. On this site students have access to information outside the walls of the school to major databases, instructional videos, and multimedia resources, etc. Outside the WCES school district, students in Chatham County are fortunate to have many multi-cultural resources available to them. High school students can speak with members of African American Entrepreneurs of Savannah. Savannah State is a predominately African American college which offers thousands of dollars in scholarship money to local graduates. Families can partake in annual Irish and German festivals. There is a strong subculture of German, Irish, African American, and "Southern" American influences in the
area. These cultures blend together to create a myriad of international holidays, festivities, and traditions. Savannah is also home to a rich history that spans the colonial era to present. The city of Savannah played a significant role in many of America's wars. This lead to its history being proliferated with ghost stories surrounding war heroes, religious leaders (many for which the city holds holiday festivals), and haunted houses. There is also a generous "helping" of fantastic food, as the Hostess City is home to the famous Paula Deen. Curriculum Review/Mapping Since there is such a wealth of historical and cultural influences in our city that have led to holiday celebrations, I decided to concentrate on the GPS standards reviewing holidays. The GPS standards focus mainly on national holidays. The Georgia Pre-K Standards are designed to correlate with the Kindergarten GPS standards. Both standards focus on understanding why Americans celebrate specific holidays and how those celebrations take place within the community. The following standards help pre-k and kindergarten teachers build unit of studies around holidays:
Pre-K Content Standards SS1d Becomes aware of family and community celebrations and events a. Describes family celebrations (birthdays, family gatherings, and holidays) b. Participates in community events (parades, festivals, fairs, picnics) Kindergarten GPS SSKH1 The student will identify the purpose of national holidays and describe the people or events celebrated. a. Labor Day b. Columbus Day (Christopher Columbus) c. Veterans Day d. Thanksgiving Day e. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day f. Presidents Day (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and the current President) g. Memorial Day h. Flag Day i. Independence Day SSKG1 The student will describe American culture by explaining diverse community and family celebrations and customs.

This information was provided through a teacher survey. The survey was sent via email to both pre-k and kindergarten teachers (4 pre-k classes and 6 kindergarten classes). The responses showed the following results: 1. How many students are in your class? The class size averaged 21 students. 2. How many students in your class are special needs? The JumpStart and PACE programs have 4 special needs students in each class. The pre-k grade level has 9 special needs students. The kindergarten level has 6 special needs students in the inclusion room and 2 special needs students in other classes. 3. What is the average AR or Lexile score for your students? The responses included nonreaders, BR, and Lexile scores form .5-1.9.
4. How many ESOL students do you have? There was one ESOL student total for the pre-k and kindergarten grades. 5. What are some projects/activities that you use to teach your students about the holidays that are listed in your standards? The survey responses included crafts that go along with a writing activity, read alouds, fact and fiction books, UnitedStreaming videos followed by Q & A, and centers that are themed. 6. What are some key assessments that you use for the holiday standards? The teachers utilize Gkids, WSO, and teacher observations. 7. What are some types of resources you would like to see added to the collection for the teachers and for the students? Teachers responded by suggesting that the collection increase units in: beginner readers, read aloud picture books, e-books, technology components, ipad apps, highlight magazine subscription, and mailbox magazine subscription. 8. What multicultural needs and materials do you think we need more of in regards to holidays? (Jewish, African American, Agnostic, German, etc.) The overwhelming response was books. Teachers wanted both fiction and nonfiction books. Collection Evaluation
Curriculum Standards, Copyright Date, Reading Levels, Student/Teacher/TITLEWAVE Recommendations
The WCES has fairly sizable collection of books about holidays. In order to review the non-fiction titles, I simply searched under the term "holidays." Using this technique, there were a mere five books suggested on the list under the fiction section; one of which was lost. However, there were 99 titles in the non-fiction section. The 394 section (general customs) held the majority of holiday themed books. Other sections that included books on holidays were: 31's (World Book-North America), 290's (Religion Indic Origin), 390's (Customs, Etiquette, Folklore), 630's (Animal Husbandry), 740's (Drawings), 790's (Indoor Games), 940's (History of Europe), 950's (History of China), and 970's (History of North America). Review of the search results showed one more major deficit. In this topic, WCES was lacking non-print materials. Items such as videos/DVD's, music collections, and website subscriptions would have to be added to the collection in order. Many of the books were dedicated to one specific holiday. Therefore, each of the holidays listed in the kindergarten GPS standards was covered. There were many more titles that covered historical and religious themes associated with holidays as well. Most of the books in the media center are in excellent condition. I did not see the need to replace more than a handful of titles due to poor condition. The copyright dates ranged from the 1980's up until 2007. Fortunately, there were only 7 titles copyrighted in the 1980's. About half of the remaining books were copyrighted in the 1990's and the other half were copyrighted in from 2000-2007. The age of the collection is reasonable considering the fact that the purposes, events, and traditions of holidays have had very few changes. The collection certainly encompassed a wide variety of holidays celebrated from different countries, perspectives, and religions. But, up further inspection it became evident that even though the collection appeared to have a wide variety of multicultural influences it was actually very unbalanced. The majority of the books were based on American and European holidays. There were only one or two titles from each of the other countries.
Circulation records showed that the most popular books centered around traditional American holidays. Titles about holidays celebrated in Europe were the next most popular books. The narrow focus of the circulation records is probably due to the fact that the books had mainly been checked out to teachers rather than students. The World Books appeared to be a rarely used resource. I would like to have seen more books about common family celebrations such as birthdays, Quinceaeras, or family reunions. This would better address the needs of the pre-k students and the SSKG1 standard. The books found were also all above the beginning readers levels. Typically speaking, there are only a few beginning readers in these grades anyway. Finding books above beginning readers would almost be expected because it is normally the teachers that check out these books and read them to the students. The drawback to this is that a student relies on a teacher or parent to read the books. Therefore it becomes very important to add books to the collection that are appropriate for beginning readers. Even picture books would suffice for the pre-k students. Books like this should be added to the non-fiction and fiction sections of the library. Both students (the children I asked that were in the media center at the time) and teachers agreed that the fiction section of holiday books needed to be "beefed up." There was even one student (3rd grade) that asked if we could get more books written in Spanish. This was slightly surprising as the learner analysis revealed only two ESOL students in the building. But, upon reflection, this was a very reasonable request. We have just the two ESOL students that receive services; but we have many students that are from Spanish speaking families. Spanish language books would be a wonderful way to create better family and parental relationships through reading. The teachers were not as specific with their requests. The most common answer to the email survey was that they wanted more books. Extended conversations with the kindergarten teachers revealed that they thought, "there were books about a lot of holidays, but only a few books on each holiday. This can prove to be problematic because we plan our units as a grade level and because holidays can only be celebrated on that one day each year." The teachers wanted more books, not about more holidays, but rather an increased number of volumes dedicated to the each of the most popular holidays. This would allow them to each have holiday books in their rooms on the same day, as opposed to taking turns for each class to read one book. Budget Summary In order to compensate for the collection's weaknesses materials ordered were focused on the following criteria: 1. Multi-media formats 2. Easy Fiction books 3. Increasing volumes for grade level sets 4. Spanish language books 5. Family celebrations (not necessarily national holidays) 6. Magazine subscriptions for teacher resources In addition to the materials listed in the consideration file, a website was also developed for teachers. Information may be found at http://holidayunit.wikispaces.com/. This site is
filled with helpful and free resources that teachers may use to enhance their unit design and curriculum mapping. Materials Consideration List See attached Excel file for listing of materials from multiple sources. Materials on Excel file come to a total of $2,303.52. Additional materials from Bound to Stay Bound are listed below. The total for BTSB materials is $1,688.08. The grand total for all materials ordered is $3,991.60.
