Apparel market (wedding) worth: Rs 10,000 crore

With each passing year, Indian weddings are getting bigger and better offering lucrative business opportunity to players involved. Giving up the basic traditional look, the Indian weddings are donning a more corporate look, these days. Currently, the country has a population of around 1.25 billion and considering an average family with five members, there are around 250million families in India. With about one marriage per family every 20 years, the country averages roughly 10 million marriages every year. With half of Indias population being under 29 years of age, the marriage market is set to boom like never before over the next five to ten years. If we take the above figures, it means the Indian marriage market is around Rs 1 lakh crore to Rs 300,000 crore annually, if one crore marriages are solemnized in the country annually. A person, in India, spends one fifth of the wealth accumulated in a lifetime on a wedding ceremony. That means, a tremendous opportunity for retailers to capitalize on. In India, people have become very style conscious and they want to give their best on their wedding. Things have changed in the past few years, it is more about brands and people are ready to spend to look their best. Apparel market is booming because of this

In My Project I will be studying the change in trends in Wedding attire of an Indian Bride.

Rational of the Project Indian wedding market worth: Rs 100,000 to Rs 110,000 crore Apparel market (wedding) worth: Rs 10,000 crore Indian wedding industry is over Rs 100,000 crore and is rising at 25% 30 % annually. The estimated cost of a wedding with no expenses spared could be between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5 crore, in India. This is very Profit and design oriented Industry

This Project will help to understand the wedding rituals and the wedding attire of the bride for different rituals. This will also help to understand me how the fashion trends have changed in this 5 Years and which is the most proffered fashion styling in last 5 years in bridal industry.

Background Study This Project is the overview and extension of two concepts the first concept focuses on understanding the wedding cultures rituals and the costumes of the bride 2nd concepts focus on the market segment of the wedding industry. Indian wedding are occasion in which person tries to spend much more than his pocket. We all are aware that marriages are bound to happen every year. So my project focuses on wedding attire and its change in last 5 years. This topic also attracted me because there is great shift from people spending huge amounts on wedding attire as compared to previous era. Marriages now in India are more of status symbol and Show Biz. We are aware that marriage in India are celebrated like festival and last for almost 10-15 days. Whether it is middle class or rich cream class of the society they love to spend maximum of their money on marriages. Wedding attire and wedding decoration is the main focus of the entire wedding. Almost all the designers have their legs in this industry and as per the literature review the Industry is growing by the rate of 25%- 30% annually. Main day ceremony Includes:

Mandap ceremony Varmala Ceremony

Post Wedding Include:

Bride Attire: The Bride usually wears Sarri or Lehanga in this ceremony. The Mehndi Ceremony is a fun filled Hindu wedding ritual that is mostly celebrated at the bride's place. Today the pre-wedding ceremonies in India are not just a small affair where only family members and friends get together, but it is celebrated on a large scale. There are different religions in the country with different traditions and ritual that have their own way of celebrating the Mehendi Ceremony. In the

ceremony, the female friends and relatives apply turmeric paste on the bride's hands, feet and face. Beautiful designs drawn on the hands of the bride that is usually done by an expert Bride Attire: Mehndi is applied on full arms So, an elegant salwar suits is best for the ceremony. Sangeet Ceremony- It is one of the most fun filled traditional events. The ceremony is performed at the Brides house few days before the wedding. In Sangeet Ceremony families from both the sides meet each other and sing, dance along. T h i s ceremony makes the family members from both the sides comfortable. Traditionally the e v e n t u s e d t o t a k e p l a c e i n o n l y n o r t h I n d i a n w e d d i n g s . Bride Attire: As the event is not that loud so, the bride wears salwar kameez or lehnga. Sagan Ceremony- Punjabi weddings are famed for their grandeur and opulence. Punjabis pull all stops when it comes to celebration and their wedding frequently resembles a carnival. Sagan is the first ceremony in a Punjabi Wedding preceding a long list of rituals. Sagan Ceremony is usually performed in the groom's house or in a banquet hall if the number of guests is m o r e . T h e S a g a n C e r e m o n y i s u s u a l l y h e l d t e n o r t w e l v e d a y s b e f o r e t h e d a y o f t h e marriage. The girl's family visits the groom's carrying 'tikka' material and wrapped gifts. Sagan is basically a ceremony where the relatives from both the sides get to know each other. Bride Attire: Chunni Chadana is the occasion when the boy's parents and relatives visit the girl's house. The boy's sister or sister in law presents a red 'Chunni' or a red sari to the bride. After the bride is dressed up in the sari, she is lead into the ceremonial venue.

Main Day Ceremony- A Hindu wedding is a mainly four to five day event that keeps the whole family engaged. Each of the days has its own significance due to the various rituals that are performed during the day. The Pre - weddinf ceremonies like mehndi, sangeet and the engagement is followed by the main day celebrations which consist of the Var Mal andthe Mandap ceremony. All the ceremonies are mainly held at the house of the bride at anopen place which is beautifully decorated. The ceremonies take place in this mandap. Bride Attire: The Bride usually wears Lehanga for this ceremony.

Var Mala: The Hindu wedding is full of enthusiasm and adventure. The main wedding ceremonies c o n s t i t u t e o f s e v e r a l r i t u a l s a n d a g e o l d c u s t o m s ; o n e o f t h e m b e i n g t h e V a r M a l a ceremony. The rituals of the main day are performed by the bride, the groom and their close relatives. The priest or the Brahmin chants mantras in Sanskrit during the entire course of events. On the main day of the wedding, there are several items required like rice, coconut, fresh flowers and many types of different grains. One of the main rituals performed during the main day of the wedding is the Var Mala ceremony which is also known as the Jai Mala. This is a ritual that shows that the bride accepts the groom as her husband. Bride Attire: The Bride usually wears Lehanga or Saree for this ceremony. Post wedding ceremonies Vidai: The Vidaai ritual marks the end of the wedding ceremony. It is very heartfelt moment for the bride's family members, close relatives and friends. According to the ritual, bride should leave her father's home and go to the husband's home. It is a new beginning for a b r i d e a s s h e b i d s f a r e w e l l t o h e r p a r e n t s a n d m o v e s o n t o b u i l d a n e w l i f e w i t h h e r husband and his family. The bride's father gives her hand to her husband and blesses her for the successful life

ahead. The ritual of Vidaai is marked as the most sorrowful and emotional moment of the wedding festivities. During this emotional moment, the saalis or sister-inlaws are gifted kalichari, which is a gold or silver (or cash) for returning the groom's shoes which were deliberately hidden by the sisters -in-law d u r i n g w e d d i n g . Thus, in Vidaai, light banter and teasing (negotiation between groom and his new sisters-in-law) combine with emotions and tear Bride Attire: The Bride usually wears the same Lehanga or Saree which she wears for the Wedding. Reception: A post wedding reception ceremony is one of the most important post-wedding rituals in India. However, the details of the recept ion ceremony vary from religion to religion and place to place. Hence each of these groups is guided by their own traditions and norms. Usually, the reception ceremony is celebrated just a day after wedding. This is a post -wedding function, in which, all the elder members, friends and relatives from both the f a m i l i e s gather and celebrate with the newly wedded couple. It is a first public appearance of the couple after wedding where they get the blessing and gifts from the community and relatives Bride Attire: The Bride usually wears Lehanga or Saree for the Wedding.

Saris lehengas deck up Bridal Asia 2007

Gold and silver embroidery, pearl sequins and mirror work shimmered on a breathtaking array of saris, lehangas, and churidar kurtas as models sashayed down the ramp showcasing traditional designs and modern lines at the Bridal Asia '07 Designer Surily Goel's collection showcased a cocktail and a bridal wear line. The color palette used was pinks, oranges and lemons and even nude-base embellished with pearl sequins. The line featured saris, knee-length skirts - both flared and straight fits - loose, long blouses like corsets and traditional cholis (blouses) with embroidery on the waistband Designer Malini Ramani crossed all boundaries created a four-tier story in her collection, with one line for a Bollywood-type 'sangeet which moved to a tropical beach party, then to a Rajasthani 'mehndi' and finally ended with a Roman wedding

mehndi', she used a lot of mirror work and block printing on chiffon and silk. The Roman wedding had evening gowns, lehanga-cholis and kurtas in shades of gold. Her flashy lehanga-cholis were embellished with beads and bright silk and brocade work. For the tropical beach party, the line featured saris with floral designs and kurtas in pale pinks and lavender - all in chiffon.

The designer duo used metallic threads, crystals, sequins, zardozi, dabka and pearl work on georgette, silk and chiffon trousseau of gararas and shararas.

Sabyasachi collection in the collection staples- namelylehangas, angarkhas, and heavy kurtas and his signature style saris. With an emphasis on bringing in dynamism in colour combinations which hitherto did not exist in the Indian Bridal wear genre, this collection is inspired by the intricacy and beauty of traditional Indian folk motifs. Sparkling beauties: Bridal Asia 2008 Judging by the preview shows of Bridal Asia 2008, it seems unconventional hues are the statement for brides to make this season. Detailed blouses and antique embroidery seem to be the other eye-catchers Designer duo Muzaffar Ali and Meera Alis collection dazzled in traditional embroidery interpreted in modern application. While the couple are known for their palette of pale

tones, this time they have experimented with colours like blue and silver. There is a strong emphasis on woven texture, with fitted outlines defining the ensembles.

Designer Ritu Beris collection, on the other hand, is essentially opulent. Though Beri has worked on a pleasing colour palette with various tones of rose, dramatic add-ons like frills make the final impact rather garish. However, Beris best is evident in the detailing on her garments.

Bridal Asia 2010 Raghuvendra Rathore by his collection redefines the lifestyle and costumes of the old world and the reinvention of those costumes during the last few decades of the British Raj. Jodhpur has always been known for its rich repertory of heritage and tradition that dates back to an era that has always been Raghavendra Rathores essential ingredient while designing each of his beautifully handcrafted ensembles. The use of a diverse mix of

material, textures and embellishments have widened the range of choices and appeal for this collection. Fabrics like silk brocades and tanchoi, have been meticulously combined with an old world sensibility to evoke a timeless quality. The authentic traditional detailing like handmade gota, zardozi and other structure detailing in silhouettes have been brought back in focus to evoke the spirit of a bygone era.

Sidhartha Tytler in his collection is a fusion of 50s Hollywood glamour and contemporary Indian Couture. The colour palette of the collection is ivory, maroon with highlights of copper, silver and gold emphasising on surfacing, texturing as well as embellishments. The silhouettes consist of sherwanis, angrakhas, kurtas, lehengas and saris

Rina Dhakar is all about reinventing luxury for a magnificent simplicity. Her design shows intense perforations, interweaving, tangles and fringes. It has interestingly merged the 90s look in umbrella lines, where most of the silhouettes are bias or slim line. The romantic floral motifs are reinvented in a cobweb avatar with pearls, sea pearls, Chinese sea pearls, bugle beads, decorating the web. Bhairavi Jaikishan: a vibrant ensemble of anarkalis, kurtas, sarees and lehengas specially designed for the upcoming happiness associated with festivals and weddings. Clothes that make a woman feel special and beautiful. Bright colors in Ombre and contrast effects to reflect the different moods and

meanings associated with our colorful country. A collection that is traditional in silhouettes but contemporary in treatments and embellishments. Flowers play a central theme in the motifs as romance is now in the air and there is nothing more romantic than beautiful flowers. Falguni & Shane Peacock: They love to dress their woman in ultra-feminine and glamorous clothes and are known for their bridal wear. Their label Peacock Bride is every brides dream come true, presenting wedding finery embellished with diamantes, feathers, intricate embroidery and semiprecious stones. Peacock Bride experiments with rich fabrics like velvet, net, crepes, satins, chiffons and brocades to create a line, which is truly traditional but with a contemporary twist. The label is known for its unique and exotic collection of lehengas, salwars and saris.

Pallavis Bridal Asia collection is aimed at all the functions of a wedding, be it mudda tika mehendi or sangeet or the wedding day or a cocktail or reception. This line is in gossamer tulle in rosy pinks to aquas to brilliant corals and reds.
