Garden Wastes at Malaysian green areas: Composting into biofertiliser

Green areas: - Playgrounds - Parks - Road reserves - River reserves Green areas amount to 10% of total developed area. Composters - a small size ESC-H which can be placed at a corner of a garden. - a larger garden should have several ESC-H composters. - or a larger sized ESC-T for centralized composting. - biofertiliser can be periodically collected from the bottom window of the composter. - The ESC-H and ESC-T do not require any mixing or aeration, but remain aerobic (thus without unpleasant odours) by virtue of design. Waste disposal problem: Dead leaves, cuttings, etc, (garden wastes) are bagged, collected, transported to disposal site and disposed at landfills as garden wastes.

Savings, by doing composting at site Garden wastes do not need to be bagged, saving on labour and bag costs and impacts Bags do not need to be collected and transported, saving on labour and transportation Green wastes do not need to be disposed, saving landfill capacity and reducing leachate content of tannin (high COD component) Biofertiliser from composter can be used to increase soil fertility and friability. With compost biofertiliser, only supplements of fertilizer nutrients need to be added every few months, this saves on fertilizer costs and labour With higher soil friability, there is better water infiltration, giving better growth With higher infiltration, there is higher base flow to keep river water quality better. With higher infiltration, there is less runoff, which helps to alleviate flash floods and river or stream surges.

City Greening Composting is a means of alleviating CO2 rise in atmosphere. It is counted as a carbon sink under UNFCCC. Composting of organic wastes is eligible for Carbon Credits, as in UNFCCC Baseline and Monitoring Methodologies AM0025 - Avoided emissions from organic waste through alternative waste treatment processes --- Version 5. Public Education on Environment Disposal of wastes via composting into fertilizer educates the public: - To conserve resources and recover it as much as possible, even from garden wastes. - On ecofriendly bioprocesses ongoing inside the composter. - On linkages in the environment, such as between soil friability and river baseflow. In fact, accompanied by a well designed poster, a composting station can be an educational spot in a garden.

BENEFITS Instead of being a problem, biodegradable solid wastes A typical test for plant (domestic, industrial, agricultural) and sludges (sewage, industrial, etc.) can be growth using compost converted into a useful product through simple and affordable composting, which entails the benefits of: Rapid on-site disposal, preventing odour and insect problems: From kitchen wastes with fish, prawn and meat wastes, From animal farm droppings, Positive From spoilt fruits in orchards, preventing proliferation of effect of fruit flies. compost on Producing soil conditioner fertilizer (SCF) from wastes, useful for plant growth gardening and rehabilitation of arid lands (deserts, ex-mining lands, sandy (2nd pot) soils, boggy lands, spoilt, acidic farmlands, etc) as SCF provides fibres and slow release nutrients. SCF is stable and easy to bag, transport and store for later use. Composting is environmentally friendly, without harmful gases, occurring at normal temperatures. Envirosource COMPOSTERS Successful composting in Envirosource composters has been on-going for over ten years using both stationary and rotary composters on various types of wastes. These processes are registered as Envirosource composter (ESC) and Envirosource Rotary Composter (ERC). ESC is available in two sizes: the ESC-Home for individual homes and ESC-Trade for centralized composting at markets, apartments, etc, or for farms and industries.. ERC is for large composting centres, eg, townships.
In the composter , acclimatized microorganisms (AM) rapidly attack wastes, stabilizing and turning them into compost. Composter (ESC-Home)
