Romans 1:18-32 ESV

(18) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
(19) For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to
them.
(20) For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been
clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been
made. So they are without excuse.
(21) For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him,
but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
(22) Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
(23) and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man
and birds and animals and reptiles.
(24) Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the
dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
(25) because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served
the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
(26) For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women
exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;
(27) and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed
with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and
receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
(28) And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a
debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
(29) They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice.
They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,
(30) slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient
to parents,
(31) foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
(32) Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to
die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

To get the full gist of this passage, read it several times in several different translations.
What this passage said to me was this:

1. God has wrath against sin. A holy, righteous wrath that is just.

1:18 Paul’s explanation of the gospel always included the fact of the wrath of God—His
righteous, personal anger against all sin in the universe, which He exercises because,
rather than bringing Him glory, sin dishonors Him and contradicts His holy, moral
character. People’s unrighteousness often leads them to suppress the truth and hold
false views of God or the teachings of the Bible, because they know that the truth would
require that they repent.

2. To deny God or deny Him the glory that is due Him leads to ever increasing levels
of sin and depravity.
3. No one is without excuse. God’s divinity and power have been revealed to all
men. That is why we must preach the gospel to them.
4. Paul considered the example of homosexuality to be perfect to illustrate those
who are totally given over to depravity. This is because it goes against nature and
the order of the family that God established.
5. Worshipping the creature rather than the Creator is the definition of humanism.
When you fail to tell people that they are sinners in need of God, you have failed
to present the gospel.
6. We have all seen in the last 30 yrs the increasing barbarity of sin. Every day we
are faced with new levels of depravity that would have shocked our grandparents.
One word that Paul uses is “ruthless” and we have seen that recently. Crime is
becoming more and more ruthless.
7. People are not ashamed any more of sin. Not only do they practice it – they give
approval to others who practice it.

A good example of verse 32 is the Anglican Church – who not only condone
homosexuality, but actually ordain bishops who openly practice it. This is the extent
to which our society has fallen.

We have failed to preach on sin from the pulpits in our churches. We have failed to
teach our children the concept of sin. We have failed to tell people that they are
sinners who are going to hell unless they repent and accept the atoning work of Jesus
and receive the salvation He purchased for us on Calvary.

Let us preach the word of truth! Let us teach the Scriptures to our congregations and
children! Tell men the full gospel – that without God they are going to hell. Tell
them of the amazing grace that saved a wretch like me. Tell them!
