“The closer you get
to them, the stronger
the effect”
Hello Igor. I’m
impressed about
your work, specially
those macro
photos showing us
a mysterious part
of our world. How
did you became
interested in
insects?
Hey. Thanks a lot, I’m
flattered. First of all I have
to confess that I am a little
depraved in my thinking.
So I take weird, strange,
bizarre, grotesque, as
positive adjectives in
creative mediums. I focused my foreign, otherworldly looking
attention on creatures that aren’t creatures – the closer you get
generally appreciated and often are to them, the stronger the effect.
shunned on account of not being Reptiles in turn sport amazing,
fluffy, cute or warm blooded. That baroque textures, scales, horns
isn’t the reason I turned to them, and hypnotic eyes. And tree
of course. Weird, alien, Gigeresque frogs are full of charm and grace,
forms fascinate me. Insects are albeit in a bit sticky-slimy way.
I was into bugs and animals
since before I remember.
Because both my parents
studied biology, I had
my first contacts with
entomology and zoology
very early in my life – the
house was full of atlases
and illustrated textbooks,
and I’ve favoured them
over “normal” children’s
story books. I’ve spent
hours over the photos and
illustrations, and new the
binominal names of my
favourite animals before
I was able to read. But it
wasn’t until spring 2003
when I bought my very
first digital SLR camera,
Canon 10D, that I found
myself on the supply side
of photography.
“...I’d like to try to

You have a great eye

images from nature.
What personal
experiences have
influenced your works
to do that?
Wow, thank you again. There
wasn’t any single event that
drew my interest to animals
– it is in my genes, I guess.
I cannot even say I was
imprinted by my parents and
the aforementioned contact
with the illustrated literature
on the subject, because it
started much earlier than I
could handle a book. I was
literally terrorizing my mom to
put snails into my push-pram
during our summer walkies.
So much for making conscious
choices...
What do you do for a day
job?
I’m a scientist. I was studying
biotechnology, got a PhD in
structural biochemistry, and just
now I have moved to neurobiology
– the model animal in my field is a
fruit fly, so I have a steady source of
fodder for my pet baby-mantises.
You have to think practical when
choosing your job.
Revolutionart loves
you. Thanks a lot Igor !

What’s the story behind
Singelringen? How does
it was conceived?
The idea came up during a din-
ner conversation I had with a
friend – she also single at that
moment. We started to discuss
how much we loved our freedom
and our life as singles. However,
both of us felt pressure from our
surroundings – friends and fam-
ily who started to become a bit
pushy about why we did not find
ourselves a serious relationship/
marriage.
