Office of Graduate Studies Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering University of Toronto GUIDE SHEET FOR THE PREPARATION

OF MEng PROJECT

Please also refer to the Thesis Information and Microfilming at: http://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/current/thesis/index.asp. General A Thesis (Ph.D., M.A.Sc.) or Project Report (M.Eng.), summarizes a "best scientific effort of its author". Accordingly, special care is called for in its preparation and presentation. All theses and project reports prepared by graduate students in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (UTMIE) must be set in double-spaced typescript on one side of good quality, standard letter-size paper. Pages should be properly numbered, and provided with adequate margins (left-hand margin at least 1-1/4" and remaining three margins at least 3/4") to allow for microfilming and binding. The title page should conform in content and layout to the attached sample where proper distinction should be drawn between "Thesis" and "Project Report" Students ready to commence the write-up of their research are encouraged to inspect sample copies of theses or project reports which are on display at the UTMIE Graduate Studies Office. Binding Requirements The binding of theses and project reports should be good quality buckram hard-cover, with gold lettering. The particular UTMIE-format of the imprints of front cover and spine (known at U of T Press as Jones-style) is portrayed by the attached sample. Students should complete the corresponding form-sheet in all necessary detail to facilitate the binding and imprinting process. In this, special attention should be paid to the UTMIE colour-scheme, viz. blue for Ph.D. Theses, red for M.A.Sc. Theses, and orange for M.Eng. Project Reports. For all theses and projects, it is important to remember that all official copies (see page two) must contain the properly completed "Authority to Distribute Form" which is available from the UTMIE Graduate Studies Office. Thesis requirements Upon completion of the examination process, a specified number of copies of theses and project reports are to be delivered to the UTMIE Graduate Studies Office. The requirements are the following:

UTMIE Clearance Form All graduate students upon completion of their program must obtain a UTMIE `Clearance Form' to certify that there are no outstanding items for which they are responsible. These forms must be signed by all parties concerned before the student's degree recommendation will be sent to the School of Graduate Studies. Deadlines It is the student's responsibility to be informed about all regulations pertaining to his or her academic venture. Accordingly, he or she should consult the SGS calendar and the UTMIE Graduate Studies Office to ascertain applicable deadlines.
