youre not under any obligation. ... Some people dont even know what some businesses offer. The Optimist Club will offer a food booth at the event, with pizza, sandwiches, walking tacos and popcorn. We prepare food for the vendors and the people coming through, Carroll said. Also, theyre doing a 50/50, to be drawn Sunday afternoon. The proceeds from those sales go directly to the clubs philanthropies. They support Safety City, the Lima Youth Symphony, Little League baseball, the Lima Striders and Boy Scouts. One of those interests, Safety City on South Collett Street, is undergoing extensive renovations.

LIMA Its a 64-year tradition. The Lima Noon Optimist Club is holding its 64th annual Home and Garden Show this weekend at the Allen County Fairgrounds. The show will feature about 125 booths from a wide range of Lima-area businesses. Nanci Carroll, chairwoman of the event, said this is the clubs main fundraiser. The reason that we support it is we just wanted to have one fundraiser to raise enough money to pay for the projects that we do all year long, Carroll said. We thought if we could do one and make it successful and keep it going, its a win. Its

good for us and its good for the businesses in the communities. The show is set up for ease of browsing, she said. By coming to it, you get a lot of ideas, not just one roofer or one person who does improvements, we have a variety, Carroll said. Thats the opportunity to look, but

Club member Ken Hall explained Safety City renovations started last fall to replace the buildings, which dated from Safety Citys start some 30 years ago. Children ride bicycles through the miniature city and learn about safety. There is also a classroom onsite for personal safety classes for children and adults. Its imperative that we get Safety City back to where it was and get it rebuilt, Hall said. A new project is a full-size house where children will learn fire and electrical safety. Last week, 16 of the 56 lots were spoken for. To sponsor a lot, contact Ben Anderson at 419-999-3030 or bdanderson87@gmail. com. To arrange a tour or event, call Lima Police Officer Dave Vastano at 419-2215269.

Homeowners emphasis on energy efficiency grows

From ARA Even in a volatile economy, homeowners are making home upkeep a priority. While the number of projects annually had been on the decline in recent years, a study from BuildFax, a resource for building, remodeling and repair information, found remodeling activity was up in 2011 over 2010. Additional data shows homeowners are opting to invest in what matters most with projects that benefit their wallets, personal comfort and the environment. should also be inspected to ensure they are clean, are free of leaks and holes and direct air to the right spaces.

Recycling 101
While recycled content is commonly focused on, recyclable materials are also important. Often with home improvement projects, old materials are thrown out and replaced with the new. What many homeowners may not know is that many building materials and appliances are recyclable. Recycling is a better solution for the environment, and may be less costly than taking material to a landfill. There are more recyclable materials on and in a home than you might first assume. Millions of tons of shingles torn off from roofs end up in our countrys landfills each year. Fortunately, the technology now exists for all those shingles to be recycled instead, says OBrien-Bernini. In 2009, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC formed an alliance with Heritage Environmental Services to create a Shingle Recycling Program with roofing contractors to make recycling convenient, cost-competitive and differentiating and have since recycled more than 90,000 tons of asphalt shingles. Homeowners looking for more information about shingle recycling and other types of recycling can turn to Earth911.com, with whom Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt, LLC recently also formed an alliance. The site hosts the largest and most accurate recycling directory in North America and provides information about what materials can be recycled as well as lists of recyclers in local markets. Know the facts

Before buying anything, shoppers are taking time to learn more about the products they put in their homes. For one in four consumers, knowing and understanding what makes up general household products is important. As options continue to increase, this attention to research is key to finding efficient products that offer maximum value. For instance, homeowners will find that a few newer home insulation products that help provide greater energy efficiency also boast new sustainable formulations. Owens Corning EcoTouch insulation is made from 99 percent natural materials, contains a minimum of 58 percent recycled content and is verified formaldehyde free.

According to the 2010 Home Improvement Research Institute Trends Program Report, reducing household energy usage and bills through energy-efficient improvements continues to be the No. 1 reason homeowners make home improvements. Now is the right time to make efficiency improvements around the home because homeowners will see an immediate impact on their monthly utility bills, and will reap even greater benefits in the long term, says Frank OBrien-Bernini, chief sustainability officer at Owens Corning. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, buildings use more energy in the United States than either transportation or industry, accounting for the consumption of 40 percent of our nations energy resources. On a more granular level, the primary use of energy in a home is for heating and cooling. In many homes, excessive energy is wasted through poorly sealed and insulated attics, walls and ductwork all problems that can be solved by handy do-it-yourselfers or through experienced contractors. The Home Improvement Research Institute reports roughly one in three homeowners plans to purchase more energy-efficient doors, windows or HVAC systems in the coming year. Sealing all openings around doors and windows can help homeowners make the most of their investment. Air ducts

Retaining walls and pavers add curb appeal

From ARA Front-porch entertaining is making a comeback in Americas neighborhoods, thanks to homeowners renewed interest in beautifying the front entries of their homes. The days of uninspired concrete front stoops have passed, giving way to elegant combinations of freestanding walls, columns and matching pavers to create welcoming entrances that also serve as gathering places. Front-entry makeovers that are both eyecatching and functional are one of the hottest trends in landscape design these days. Decades ago, neighbors would often retire to their front porches in the evening and gather together for conversation with neighbors up and down the street, says Lonnie Sekeres, designer at Villa Landscapes in Oakdale, Minn. It doesnt have to be extravagant either. Doing something as nominal as adding a paver walkway and freestanding wall along with a new take on plants to accent certain areas can do a lot to freshen up your curb appeal on a modest budget, says Sekeres. The curved lines of the step are repeated in the walkway and in a round raised-bed garden. The pergola extends from the front of the house, supported by white pillars mounted inside freestanding columns.

Sekeres gave a another familys home a facelift with a handsome hardscaped frontentry courtyard graced with fresh plantings. A plain concrete sidewalk was replaced with matching pavers to create a fresh look for the home with a new, more neighborly entertaining space. The solution was a raised patio that extends from the existing front step to the middle of the yard. Installing carpet tiles is well within the abilities of most homeowners. Because theyre a smaller, more manageable size, carpet tiles are easier to install than a large piece of carpet. They require fewer cuts and no stretching. They also deliver enhanced design capabilities; its easy to create a unique pattern using different colored tiles.

DIY cheats that look like you spent a bundle

From ARA Did you ever watch a home improvement show team transform a drab room into something spectacular using a shoestring budget and less time than it takes you to clean out your closet? Ever wonder how they did it? Heres the secret: they cheat. And you can too. You would probably never consider taking shortcuts in other aspects of your life, from car maintenance to paying your taxes. But when it comes to do-it-yourself home improvement and decorating projects, theres no shame in cheating and a lot to be gained by doing it. Decorator touches like crown moulding that requires no mitering and no-sew window treatments can give your home an instant visual upgrade for a fraction of the cost of having those jobs done professionally. Here are four DIY cheats that will save you time and money and yield professional results that look like you spent a bundle:

3. Mirror framing systems

A frame around a bathroom mirror can give the entire room a more luxurious, upscale feel. Yet, like traditional crown moulding, conventional framing requires knowledge of mitering. Fortunately, a simple online search will yield plenty of easier options, including framing systems that provide a custom look with pre-cut (and mitered) frame pieces.

4. No-sew window treatments

Custom window treatments look great but can cost a bundle. Sewing them yourself requires more expertise than you likely gleaned in your high school home-ec class, and you would need a decent (read: expensive) sewing machine to do the job right. Creating no-sew curtains requires nothing more than a tape measure, some scissors, iron-on adhesive, an iron and several yards of the fabric of your choice. Simply measure the windows to find your desired fabric length, cut the fabric into appropriately sized panels, and use the adhesive and iron to finish the edges, no sewing required. When it comes to do-it-yourself home improvement and decorating, dont be a hero. A little cheating can save you time and money, and make creating your dream home fast, easy and rewarding.

1. Crown moulding
Moulding Mates is a crown moulding installation system that requires no specialized tools or skills. You dont even need to miter cut corners. Simply pre-finish the polyurethane moulding (which is available in a wide range of styles), attach the patented Quick Clips to the wall where you want to place the moulding, and pop the moulding lengths into place on the clips. Corner pieces and connector blocks cover ends and seams, eliminating the need to miter ends and patch or touch up the long pieces. You can easily install the entire system using a screw drill and a saw. You can learn more and browse products at www.focalpointproducts.com.

Planning your new kitchen renew or redo?

From ARA Upgrading the kitchen is on many homeowners to do list. And for good reason. A minor kitchen remodel ranks fourth on the list of the top 10 home improvement projects that deliver return on investment, according to Remodeling magazines 2010-11 Cost vs. Value Report. But whether youre in it for the investment, or just to freshen up the space in your home where people spend the most time, a new kitchen look could be a fun, impactful improvement to your house. Some may start with a weekend project and a $40 can of paint, while others will jump into a $50,000-plus remodel. Either way, one thing is for sure you cant go wrong with a beautiful, highly functional kitchen. of decorative plumbing faucets and fixtures.

A full remodel
Homeowners throughout the country are staying in their homes longer than they once did. Because of that, significant remodeling projects tend to rise to the top of the priority list. If youre in it for the long haul (or even to ensure you get that return on investment), a complete kitchen remodel could be for you. When the entire room footprint is your canvas, the possibilities are exciting. While a contractor is recommended for most of these projects, make sure youre involved in exploring the options that will help you use this space as wisely as possible (yet provide beautiful decor in the process): Install display shelves. This hot kitchen trend is an eyecatching alternative to hanging wall cabinets. Taking down cabinets is a pretty simple task for two and hanging the shelves is even easier. Evaluate the flow of the workspaces. Adding more water sources to your room could improve efficiency and ease. Consider a simple, yet beautiful faucet on the island for prep, a pot filler by the stove to help while cooking, and a hardworking faucet at the main sink for clean-up. Mix and match your surfaces. Replacing countertops is one of the most noticeable changes to any kitchen venue. Quartz surfaces are a popular choice, providing a unique combination of quality, hygiene and a look of natural stone. Selecting a lighter color surface for the perimeter and a darker, bolder color for the island is a great way to add another design element to the room.

A simple refresh
If time or budget constraints limit you to changing just a few basic elements of the kitchen, focus on things that make the most impact. Even novice do-it-yourself homeowners can complete many of these items on their own: Paint the walls. Painting always tops the to-do list when a mini makeover is in order. Its an affordable, high-impact way to change the decor of a kitchen. If youre not changing out cabinets or countertops, be sure to select a color that complements those major elements. Add new accessories. Switching out the small decor details in a kitchen can make the room feel entirely new. Maybe its replacing bar stools at the island, reupholstering pillows or a bench cushion, or even hanging a few new pieces of art or photos on the wall.

Choosing a more up-to-date pull-down or pull-out faucet not only improves the look of the room, but can add significant convenience and functionality. Change the faucet. Often underestimated, the kitchen faucet has a lot of influence in the overall style of the room.
