How we created value

Ovivos aftermarket consultancy has saved its client several million renminbi (RMB) in operating costs. The clients energy consumption has dropped dramatically. Ovivos study and recommendation has enabled smoother, troublefree operation.

Ovivo Shanghai monitors client process performance, enabling dramatic energy and cost savings. Background Ovivos Shanghai team was commissioned to monitor performance and recommend the case for changing its clients 55kW ltered water pump from soft starter to variable speed drive (VSD) control. A soft starter control reduces the load and torque in a powertrain at start-up in order to reduce the stress experienced by motor drives and shafts. Variable speed drives enable stepless speed adjustments to be to accommodate varying mechanical stress in multi-stage processes. Process Before the change, using soft starter control, the electrical current to the running motor was 75 amperes and voltage was 380 VAC, therefore the power consumption of this motor each day was:

1.732*Voltage*Current/1000*24 (h) = 1184.64 kWh When the pump was changed to VSD control, the process required a ow rate of 138m3 at 5 bar pressure. Thus, the real power consumption per day was found to be: owrate*pump head*0.2725/VSD efciency factor/motor efciency factor*24 (h)=516.48 kWh (VSD efciency factor = 96%; motor efciency factor = 0.91) Diff.: 1184.64 - 516.48 = 668.16 (kWh) So by adopting VSD control, Ovivo demonstrated that a 55kw motor pump could save 668.16 kWh of electricity each day, which translates to a saving of about 12.15kWh per day per kW consumed. Performance Ovivo designed and implemented one ultrapure water plant for its client whose total on-line motor load is 806 kW, when running continuously all year round.

As calculated above, 12.15kWh/day per kW consumed is saved by using VSD. The 806 kW motor saves the following amount annually: 12.15*806*365 = 3574408.50 (kWh) That means the annual electrical cost saving to the business is: 0.7 * 3574408.50 = 2502085.95 (RMB) (unit price for each kWh industrial electricity in China is RMB 0.7) The new VSD-controlled ultrapure water plant prevents water hammer and pressure uctuation. Ovivos consultancy has saved its client signicant costs but also greatly reduced its energy consumption.
