Many of you know that one of the prime benefits from our cadet program is the recognition of cadets leadership training by the U.S. Air Force. The cadet leadership program is set up in four phases. As our cadets progresses through the program they receive very challenging academic test and physical fitness test covering all aspects of their training from Day 1 to completion of phase two of the program. Passing the academic and physical fitness test marks a milestone for a cadet where the cadet earns the coveted General Billy Mitchell Award and may proudly where the Cadet Grade of Second Lieutenant. It is the completion of this achievement, which the U.S. Air Force recognizes by awarding any cadet who enlists in the U.S. Air Force the Grade of E3 or Airmen First Class upon completion of Basic Military Training otherwise best known as Boot Camp. We have received good news that our leadership program is now officially recognized by one of our other military services, the U.S. Coast Guard. This became effective on June 22, 2006. The new recognition by the U.S. Coast Guard allows any applicant for enlistment with at least two years experience in CAP the pay grade of E-2 (Seamen, Airmen, Firemen Apprentice). Also, any applicant for enlistment with at least three years experience or has received the General Billy Mitchell Award are eligible to enlist at the grade of E-3 (Seamen, Airmen, Firemen). Many cadets around the country take advantage of the benefits obtained through the CAP cadet program, and with the additional recognition by the U.S. Coast Guard of our training will open the door for many more who are interested in serving our nation by enlisted in the armed services. What an exciting time to be a Cadet in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol.

Beverly Composite Squadron Recognized

William Frank 2Lt, USCAP
Safety Officer

Beverly Composite squadron of the Massachusetts CAP Wing achieved a mishap free record for the 12 months ending in December 2006. The squadron was awarded a Certificate of Achievement in February of this year by CAP National Headquarters. This most recent award is a continuation of an excellent squadron safety record, having received the same award for four of the past five years. In addition to weekly meetings with cadets and senior members, the squadron participates in numerous activities including conferences, search and rescue exercises, and week long encampments. Members of the squadron should be commended for having maintained an incident free record in all CAP activities. CAP has an extensive safety program including monthly squadron safety briefings for cadets and seniors and an annual safety survey of the squadron facility. There is also participation in a CAP National Safety Down Day. Both the Mass wing and National Headquarters provide training materials on topics such as aircraft operation safety, ground team safety, physical fitness, and vehicle safety.
