In designing this timeline, I wanted to emphasize the major location shift in John Singer Sargent's life (from Paris to London). This dictated, among other things, what one of the required art pieces to use would be, the Portrait of Madame X, as in addition to being one of Sargent's most famous works, it also marked the end of his time in Paris. The other works were chosen a bit more arbitrarily, with some things (such as the self-portrait and the one of Roosevelt) being chosen for appropriateness in this type of project or for being noteworthy themselves. The focus was on Sargent's portrait work as opposed to his watercolors. The rest of the design was based on this split between locales the background images are an obvious representation of this. The sharp shift in the height of the timeline, as well as the change in picture borders are other ways this was emphasized. These borders, although stylized, are there to give the art used a place within the piece, much like an actual picture frame, as opposed to floating freely. Colors were kept to black, white, and grays so as to keep attention on the actual pictures. The one exception, the border/frame for the self-portrait, was to reinforce (along with its size) that it represents the subject of the timeline itself. The font used was Trajan Pro, with normal used for text & bold used for year numbers. Several fonts were tested, but this one had the right feel for a timeline about a portrait artist.
