Procedures: Include critical thinking questions and accommodations for individual needs 1. Say: Explain to the students that this year we will be building a classroom reading community-reading, thinking about, and talking about books together. 2. Before going over the story, I will go over key vocabulary that can help several students. (Accomodations for ESL students especially). Show the pictures of the words and describe each one. First ask the class if anyone knows what each one of them means. Call on students who are raising their hands. After discussions let everyone know of the definition of each. Dogcatcher tulip collar dog pound Dogcatcher- a person who catches dogs that wander the streets without an owner Tulip- a kind of flower Collar- a thin band worn around the neck of a dog or cat, usually with a tag saying the name of the owner Dog pound- a place where dogs without homes are kept 3. Stick the pictures up on the wall so that everyone can see what they are while I read. 4. Ask: Can anyone give me any predictions about the story based on the Title or Cover? 5. Call on students who are sitting quietly with their hands up 6. When students make predictions, make sure to re-state their predictions and say that I like how (student name) connected this to his/her life in.. 7. Start reading the story. Make sure to pronounce words fully and to show the illustrations to the students. 8. While reading, if students are not paying attention make sure to bring up Mrs. Bahlers behavior management strategy. Also make sure to emphasize wait time. Say, Ill wait until you are done talking If that doesnt work, make sure to start counting 1, 2, 3.. If I get to 5 I will be sending students back to their seat. 9. Half way through, I will stop and ask if the students have any questions. Chose students who are sitting quietly with their hands raised. 10. Make sure to make accommodations by directing questions to them (eye contact) and by calling them for sure if they are volunteering their answers. 11. Continue and Finish the book.

Summary/Closing: 1. Once I finish the story, ask the students if they liked the book or if they did not like the book. 2. Ask: Can anyone retell the story? (Call on students who are sitting quietly with their hand raised) 3. Ask the students, Why did the little white dog go to Fred and Lucys house? What in the story makes you think that? 4. Wait for student responses and call on students. 5. Let the students know that they did an overall good job with listening and being respectful. Let students know that the next activity will be led by Mrs. Bahler. Student Assessment: The student assessment will be done through the questions that I ask at the end of the read aloud. Making sure students have understood the story and what it was about. Students will have made connections to their own lives which will let me know that there was some kind of comprehension of the reading and that they have been able to connect it to their own lives some way.
