If the SOL test(s) results are not received by the school prior to the administration of exams, exams for which a student has taken the SOL test(s) will be optional. Homework Homework can be a valuable component of education when the overall goal is to improve a student s learning and increase achievement. Teachers, students, parents, and administrators all play a significant role in making certain that homework is meaningful. The goal of this policy is to ensure that homework is beneficial and meets the learning needs of all William Campbell students. It outlines the purpose of homework, the various types of assigned work, the evaluation of homework, and the roles and responsibilities of teachers, students, parents, and administrators. Purpose of Homework The purpose of homework is to increase student learning and achievement. Homework can be a combination of the following: Practice of a particular concept, where students are given an opportunity to apply newly taught knowledge. Extension of a concept which furthers a lesson presented in class or a long-term project that parallels classroom assignments. Preparation for an assignment that will be presented in class, which may include reading, research, or review of class materials.

It may be assigned as preparation for the next day s class. This may include reading assignments or vocabulary. 2. Homework should be written down for students to copy into their assignment pads and expectations are to be clear and consistent. Work will be reviewed prior to being assigned; in addition, a student s access to resource materials will be considered before assignments are given. 3. The time a student spends on homework should have a direct correlation to increasing their scholastic achievement and reinforcing curriculum objectives. Evaluation of Homework Any homework that is assigned should be assessed to see if instructional objectives are being met. Homework will be evaluated promptly and returned to the student. The grade will reflect effort and/or accuracy. Students and Parents Students are expected to be responsible for their part in their education. This includes but is not limited to: being organized and prepared for class, communicating with teachers and parents when assistance is needed, and making sure they are aware of homework goals and deadlines. Parents or guardians should support their child by providing them with a positive environment where homework can be completed. Parents can also help their student by checking their homework and communicating with teachers when instructional concerns arise. Administration William Campbell Combined School administrators will work with students, parents, and faculty members to ensure that the homework policy is being appropriately managed and that efforts are made to address the academic needs of each student.

ATTENDANCE
After-School Activities and Absences - A student who is absent from school for more than half of the school day or leaves due to illness shall not participate in or attend any school sponsored activity. Half of the school day shall be defined as four full class periods. Attendance Policy - As of July 1, 1999, state law has changed compulsory school attendance to age 18. State law also requires that the school call home or the place of work of a parent or guardian when a student is absent unless the school has been called first. A parent may call in the morning of an absence or early release for verification purposes. Regular school attendance is important to the academic development of each student. When a student is absent from school, he is required to bring a note with a phone number from a parent/guardian stating the date and the reason for the absence. All students with or without notes are to report to the attendance clerk on the first morning they return. They will be issued an excused or unexcused admittance slip based on Campbell County School Board Policy. Persistent absences will require the student to bring in a note from the doctor to be excused. Students without a note will receive an unexcused admittance slip. Failure to bring an excused note for the second day after an absence will result in disciplinary action and zeros on all school work. The admittance slip for all excused or unexcused absences shall be signed by all teachers and returned to the office by the student's seventh period teacher. Students requesting an approved absence are required to bring in a note two days prior to the absence. The note will be submitted to the principal for approval. If the approval for the absences is granted, the student will be responsible for securing all assignments which will be due when the student returns to school. Early Dismissal - Before going to first period a student who must leave school early must bring to the attendance clerk a note from his parent or guardian stating the date, time, reason for early dismissal, and who will be signing the student out of school. The note will also require a phone number, which will be used for verification purposes. A parent may call the school in the morning to verify an early release. No student will be released until a parent is contacted. For medical or legal matters, the student shall present an appointment card or a summons. The student will be given an early dismissal note to be shown to the teacher before leaving the class. The student must sign out in the office before leaving and sign in if returning before the end of the day. A parent or guardian who comes to the school without prior written notification to pick up a student must come to the office and sign out the student. Students failing to sign out of school will be disciplined for leaving school grounds without permission. Field Trips - Field trips are a privilege, which may be an extension of the instructional day; however, if excessive absences or tardies occur or a student is not in good standing the student will be denied the privilege of attending the field trip. Illness - If a student becomes ill during school hours, he must report to the regular classroom teacher to get permission to report to the nurse s office. The parent or guardian will be called to provide transportation home. Students are not to leave school grounds without permission from the office.

Late Arrival - A written excuse must be submitted to the office when a student arrives after the school day is

11

started. The attendance clerk will issue a class admittance pass, which will indicate whether the student is excused or unexcused. The pass must be initialed by the student's teachers in each class he attends during the remainder of the day. The seventh period teacher will collect the slip and return the slip to the office. Make-Up Work Policy - It is important for every student who has an excused absence from school to make up his work. For a student to be able to make up his work, he needs to receive an excused absence from school, and he needs to get the absentee slip signed by his teachers. Any student receiving an unexcused absence will receive zeros for those days missed. A student is to make-up his work before or after school or during study hall only. It is the student s responsibility to request and obtain make-up work from each of their teachers. The length of an excused absence will determine the amount of time the student is allowed for make-up work. For example, if the student is absent for one day and the work was assigned the day prior to his absence, it will be due upon his return. If the work was assigned the day of his absence, it would be due the day after his return. However, if a student has been assigned a special project or paper, the project or paper needs to be sent to school that day. On occasions where a student has been absent for three or more consecutive days due to hospitalization or other extenuating circumstances, the student will see an administrator to set up guidelines for making up his work. The following guidelines will apply to providing assignments for students absent due to illness: A. Students are strongly encouraged to get assignments for short-term absences from their peers. B. When assignments are being requested, please follow these guidelines: 1. If requests to the guidance office are not submitted by 8:30 a.m. of the day needed, assignments may not be available the same day. A parent who submits a late request is advised to call and ask about availability of assignments before coming to pick them up. 2. Assignments may not be picked up before 3:20 p.m. 3. Students are requested to return assignment sheets with the completed work. Tardiness - Students at William Campbell High School are to be in class and ready to learn prior to the tardy bell. If a student is tardy to class, he will be required to have a pass from a teacher, or he will be informed that a tardy slip has been issued. After the third unexcused tardy to school, homeroom or class during the semester, the student will receive the following assignment: 4th offense - 1 day PAD 5th offense - 2 days of PAD 6th offense - Further disciplinary action

It is the philosophy of William Campbell High School that students of senior high school age are capable of exercising self-discipline. Their responsibilities are continually increasing in the school, home, and community, and their acceptance of these responsibilities should be displayed throughout the school year. To implement this philosophy, only those rules and regulations necessary to ensure an effective instructional program and ensure the safety and well being of the students have been adopted. These rules also apply to student conduct when going to and from school, attending or engaging in any school-sponsored activity. GUIDANCE
At William Campbell guidance encompasses a wide range of activities to help the student get the most out of high school experiences with the cooperative efforts of parents, students, administrators, teachers, and counselors. Current emphasis on career education has added to the importance of guidance as an instrument of aid to the student in planning a course of study. We encourage parents and teachers to participate in the student's planning.

College Information
College Applicants - Seniors should begin obtaining and filling out applications for colleges by mid-October. A transcript of the high school record should accompany all applications. A signed release is necessary prior to the mailing. Admission requirements to colleges vary. A good resource providing the specifics of any given college is The College Handbook. Usually, the colleges expect the applicants to have taken the SAT I: Reasoning Test. Larger colleges and universities also expect their applicants to take SAT II: Subject Tests. The Admission Testing Program provides the necessary materials for the various tests which are generally administered during the following months: October, November, December, January, March, May, and June. Students planning to attend college must pre-register for all tests approximately six weeks prior to the actual test date. Juniors are encouraged to take the SAT's. An opportunity for juniors and sophomores providing experiences similar to those of the SAT's is optional in the selection of the PSAT/NMSQT for practice. Community colleges generally administer the Comparative Guidance Placement Tests for purposes of determining the selection of courses and other guidance services. Costs for the different tests vary. Transcript Fee - Official high school transcripts may be requested from the guidance office. Students scheduled to graduate at the end of the current school year may request two transcripts, free of charge, to be sent directly to the colleges of their choice. Additional transcripts may be requested for a fee of $2.00 per transcript. Transcript request forms are available in the guidance office. Please allow one week for processing.

TRANSPORTATION
Student Automobile Regulations - Each student driving a vehicle to William Campbell must display a William Campbell High School Parking Permit. Students must park in the main student parking lot located by the tennis courts. Students must secure permission from the administration before they will be permitted to park on the school grounds. Applications may be picked up the first week of school. These applications must be returned to the office the first week in September. If the application is approved and school fees have been paid, a parking decal will be issued that must be displayed and properly adhered to the rear window. The cost of the decal will be $5.00. Parking decals may not be transferred from one vehicle to another vehicle. Any violation of parking regulations will make the student subject to loss of the parking decal and/or disciplinary action. Students are not permitted in the parking lot or in vehicles, except when arriving at or departing from school, without permission from the administration. Any student going to the parking lot without permission from the administration will be subject to disciplinary action. Any students staying after school for extra-curricular activities are prohibited from moving vehicles from the student parking lot. Students who violate the conditions of the parking application will have their parking decal confiscated. Students who are repeatedly suspended are subject to loss of parking privileges. The school also reserves the right to deny parking on school grounds to individuals who have not purchased a decal, who are constantly tardy to school or who fail to observe the 10 mile-per-hour speed limit. Any violation of parking regulations will result in disciplinary action. Vehicles are subject to being searched on school grounds if there are reasonable grounds of suspicion for a search.
