In an Associated Press story recently...
"The Border
Patrol reported that 14 suspected illegal immigrants were
taken into custody after a suspected smuggling boat was
found on the sand at Huntington Beach.
Border Patrol spokesman reportedly told the Orange
County Register that the group aboard the 24-foot panga
was taken to a border station.
In another incident, earlier in the month, an abandoned
30-foot panga was found 200 yards off Fernald Point in
Santa Barbara Countys Montecito area. A Sheriffs
spokesman Drew Sugars told the Santa Barbara
News-Press that life jackets found on the beach suggest
that up to 20 people may have been aboard.
City of Huntington Beach officials report that there
have been at least 8 ponga-related events in Huntington
Beach jurisdictional waters and shores involving the
possible arrival or attempted arrival of illegal aliens to
the United States through the portals of the 9-mile or so
vast Surf City shore area.
There have been eight ponga related incidents in the
last year within the city jurisdiction. These incidents
are allegedly human and drug
smuggling operations.

Lifeguard vehicles work-
ing with HB Police in transporting bales of drugs that con-
tained a street value of nearly 1.5 million dollars. The
Huntington Beach bluff area is the location of choice for
these purported international criminals who pose a serious
threat to public safety by beaching their vessels illegally and
off loading their human and drug related illegal cargo. They
are likely desperate and probably armed so their behavior
will likely be unpredictable. Obviously they are coordinat-
ing with land resources and scouting areas for drop off/pick
up. Clearly, this is a threat to public safety and officers who
are responding to the scene.
It should be pointed out that some preliminary research
indicates Huntington Beach has never had this problem
before local marine safety night patrol operations were
eliminated about 2 years ago. Our understanding is that
currently, Marine Safety assets are all off duty at 5 pm
through the winter season. Apparently, the alleged
smugglers and/or "scouts" are aware of the lack of
beach patrols and operational times. They have even
planned their "landings" during the time when beach
maintenance takes their breaks as well. Perhaps, No Habla,
but for sure, habla opportunity.

Ellis Ave. is adjacent to the proposed site of a new, major
mixed used project in Huntington Beach on Beach Blvd
at Ellis. Concerns are being raised the neighborhood.
Imagine.... 200 police calls were made in a year at the Ellis
Ave. apartment complex, far more than any other property
in Huntington Beach.
Out of a possible 365 days per year, the Beach View Villa
complex at 8102 Ellis Ave. has seen 229 police incidents.
These police calls have included a variety of police responses.
Police have responded to calls revolving around animal cruelty,
battery, domestic violence and several calls to investigate
possible narcotics activity, among other types of incidents.
This apartment complex is currently home to 106 affordable
housing units. The information surfaced when the EIR in sup-
port of more "affordable" housing was presented to the city
council. The profile begs the question: How af-

public services resulting from concentrating
high density developments without
adequate mandates for community
compatibly and sustainability.
Perhaps there should be some conditions
applied to ownership of these needed, but
obviously long term issue-driven develop-
ment projects. Two police calls per year is too
many for any single address. What is an
acceptable threshold -totally subjective,
however, a rational number should be
developed that when reached, triggers (excuse
the pun) government actions resulting in some
punitive action against the property owner.
Whether that result is substantial financial
penalties to help off-set the cost of supplying
unreal levels of public satiety or conditional
Use Permit issues that become in
jeopardy...something needs to be done to help
avoid these abuses in the future. TLN Opin-

he Cranston West Prayer
Banner is not just an old mural
painted on the wall. Both
the School Creed and School Prayer
should be viewed as cornerstones of the
foundation that makes West the
school that it is today.
After discussions with my
high school classmates
regarding the recent court decision to remove the Prayer Mural
from the wall, I realized my feelings about the mural were
much deeper than just our class gift in 1963.
Many comments and opinions have been expressed on
the internet, TV and newpapers but no one seems to under-
stand why the murals both the Creed and Prayer were an
important gift, for our class and the school.
To understand you need to go back to 1960 when students
graduating from Hugh B. Bain Junior High were
divided into two groups. Students from western
Cranston would start their sophomore year at the new
Cranston High School West, also being used as a
Junior High School at that time, and the rest of the
students would attend Cranston High School East
previously named Cranston High School. For the first
time the city would have two high schools. There was
a lot of controversy and some students were unhappy
about attending a new school. Many of their
parents and siblings had graduated from
Cranston High a school filled
with history, tradition and
legacies. We
started our high
school years in
a new school
where not only
theacademic
bui l di ng
was not
fi ni shed
but the
gym and
auditorium
had not
even
been started! As sopho-
mores, in 1960, we were
the entire high school student body no juniors, no seniors!
Imagine your school fielding sports teams with only
underclassman, hallways without trophy cases, walls void of
academic achievement awards and PE class without a gym!
We were students in a school without a history or a legacy.
The Class of 63 became the leader of tradition at West not by
choice but by circumstance. Not that we knewit then. We were
just enjoying our high school years and could not project out
10 years never mind 48. Did we feel deprived by all that was
missing at our school? I dont think so. In fact, we really didnt
know anything else and enjoyed every milestone as it came
along. Interscholastic games were played, dances were held,
plays put on and SATs taken. Everything we did was a first!
And that made it special. Finally the main part of the school
was finished, the gymnasium built and the auditorium was
almost complete when we graduated.
During our senior year, one of the big questions was: What
should we give our school as a graduation gift? It needed to
be something special, a lasting gift. With the approval of the
school we chose to place the School Creed and School Prayer
on the auditoriumwalls. Our Prayer Mural was given not as a
religious statement bu as part of the school society as we knew
it during our high school years.
What a pleasant surprise when I went back to West last
year and found the hallway lined with trophy cases as well as
banners hung around the school showcasing awards and
achievements earned over the years. Wonderful to see! West
now has the history, tradition and legacy that was missing in
1963. The School Creed and School Prayer murals were
part of that legacy. Taking down the mural will remove a
cornerstone; part of the foundation started by the schools first
graduating class so many years ago.
June 2013 will be 50 years since the first class, 1963,
graduated fromWest. As part of our 50th Reunion celebration
we would like to present the school with a replacement
mural to continue building on the
legacy of Cranston
High School West.

A
segment of the popular
90210 TV series that was
shot at Bolsa Chica State
Beach recently, may appear in March
on KTLA Channel 5, according to
officials. Bolsa Chica State Beach
is a great place to shoot because its
a beautiful location and less
crowded in Winter, said Nick
Biron, a CBS Location Scout, who
works finding sites for the show
about 9 months of the year. He said
they also use beaches in Torrance
and Redondo for shooting.
A large set, complete with huge
lights, was set up on the beach,
including a stage and and other areas
where a variety
of cameras, on
and above
ground, caught
every move.
Surfer actors
were used in
b a c k g r o u n d
shots. Nearby
joggers and
bicyclists going
down the beach trail cranked their
necks in an effort to catch a glimpse
of the shows stars and take in the
exciting Hollywood glamour.
In the Bolsa parking lot were
dozens of star trailers, production
trucks and Hollywood caterers. The
taping brings much needed money
to the state, employment to hundreds
involved in the show and adds a few
hours of glitz to one of our beautiful
beaches, where seagulls, pelicans,
least terns and other passersby
usually see just sand and surfers
this time of year. After Bolsa,
the show is heading to Inglewood
for further shooting.
More than 60 people recently came to
a Costa Mesa Historical Society meeting
to hear legendary Southern California
Architect Richard Dodd speak about the
Missions along El Camino Real. The
Newport Beach man, who has been an
award-winning architect for more than
50 years, showed slides of his mission
photos and told fascinating facts about
many of the 22 California Missions. He
said the missions were established
between 1769-1823, a one day horse ride
apart. The first was in San Diego. The
Spanish initially created the missions to
have Franciscan Fathers save souls, for
trading posts and to protect California
from other countries. But after Mexico
defeated Spain, missions were given
back to the native people, who mostly
didn't want them, Dodd said, so the
spectacular church compounds were sold
to friends. After the United States took
control of California, the missions were
returned to the church.
Dodd said Mission Santa Pala is the
only one where the bell tower is separate
from the church. The width of Mission
Santa Ynez is based on the size of the
timber in the area. He said San Gabriel
is the only one built with fired bricks but
most are made of adobe. Dodd said the
city of San Francisco got its name
because of the mission.
He gave the fascinated audience free
mission photos taken over the last
several years. There were also trivia
contests in which he had the crowd
answer mission questions and winners
got parts of real adobe bricks. Dodd, who
received the California Council of the
American Institute of Architects'
Excellence in EducationAward, is author
of "Architectural Styles Orange

attended Cranston High School West a very
long time ago. Some 48 plus years after the
first graduating class of this school a young
lady brought suit giant the school for a banner
that my class donated to the school upon our
graduation.This letter to the editor sums it all
up...why all the fuss?

Re: Student Faces Towns Wrath in Protest
Against a Prayer about a successful lawsuit
brought by Jessica Ahlquist, a 16-year-old
atheist in Cranston, R.I.:
There are only six words in the text posted on
the wall of Cranston High School West that are
the cause of the problem. They are School
Prayer, Our Heavenly Father and Amen.
Take them out. The text can then read, with
slight modification:
May we each day
desire to do our best,
to grow mentally and
morally as well as
physically, to be kind
and helpful to our
classmates and
teachers, to be honest
with ourselves as
well as with others.

1963 was a different time, we ate dinner as a family,
often including a prayer before meals. In 1963 we
drank water from a garden hose, we played in the
street...we even burned our leaves in front of our
homes in the summer.
I had the honor of being the President of the first
Graduating Class at CHSW. We had no agenda with
our gift...common words were used to express a
message to future classmates, teaches and parents
of Falcons.
Almost 50 years have passed since then, several
wars, numerous tragic events and what we have today
is a more politically correct (perhaps vanilla) set of
hyper-sensitivities directed towards everything we all
once took for granted. Where is Thomas Jefferson
when we really need him?
We, the Class of 1963, are about to celebrate our
50th Anniversary. The real tragedy in all this
unnecessary grandstanding over legal points
surrounding the separation of Church and State would
be if our Class could not continue to point to our
attempt to leave a "message" vs. the few specific
words in question, over the years to come. Our intent
was so wholesome, non-political and all-inclusive
that I we will be allowed to come together and
re-dedicate a 2013 version of our thoughts, hopes and
dreams so that all who have and will follow can share
what we felt as we pioneered a new School
experience With unlimited fiscal resources, the
passion to drive a train and with an army of believers
at my side...I would certainly pursue what I thought
was the right answer. Keep the Banner!
But unfortunately, for the Cranston School Board
demands for service out way the resources available.
I believe the resources needed to try to change this
national mood would seriously detract from other
public priorities, even though perhaps it is the right
course of action. I applaud your courage and
righteous approach to this
incremental dismantling
of what so many hold
dear...so many have
died and suffered
for. I remember
when my first classmate died in the Vietnam conflict
and the reality of life struck me so hard.
We had just played football together a mere few
years before.. Our fight needs to be at the ballot
box if core life styles are to prevail. I've come to
own and publish a newspaper in Souther California
so I live these issues every day...and do not envy
the tough debate you have had. Thank you for
your public service. Good luck with the results of
your decision process.

Scottish history professor at the
University of Edinburgh, had
this to say about the fall of the
Athenian Republic some 2,000

L
arry Taite started his career
with the City of Huntington
Beach in 1977 as part of the
Public Works Survey Section. After
a brief stint in Las Vegas in 1980-81,
he returned to the City and has
never looked back. In 1986 Larry
moved over to the Engineering/
Design Section and currently works
as Civil Engineering Assistant.
Unfortunately for the City, Larry
plans on retiring this summer after
33 years of service. His coworkers
will miss his work ethic, his sense
of humor and the stories he has to
share from his many experiences.
Larry is known for his meticulous
attention to detail. Once given a
task, there is no doubt that he will
give it 100% and you know it will
not only get done, but get done
right. This attention to detail has
proven valuable as evidenced by
the many successful projects with
which he has been associated, in-
cluding the many successful audits
of state and federally funded grants.
Larry brings this same bird dog
attitude to his hobbies. In addition
to obtaining a black belt in martial
arts he is currently a member of the
World Championship USA Rifle
Team. Larry set a world record in
2005 at 600 yards and was
subsequently named National
Bench Rest Shooters Association
(NBRSA) national champion. Most
recently, in May 2011, Larry
travelled with the team to Ireland
where he competed in the Ireland
National Championship(anindividual
event), taking a bronze medal at
800 yards and grabbing the gold at
900 yards. While there the team
competed in the USA vs. Europe
Challenge Match and the
Creedmoor Cup (USA vs. Ireland)
taking gold at both events.
Larry was born in West Covina,
the 6th of 7 siblings. He moved to
Huntington Beach at the age of
three and has lived here for most
of his life, attending Circle
View, Perry and Dwyer Schools
and Huntington Beach High. He
is the proud father of daughter
Mystie and son Mark and has 3
grandchildren. When it is all said
and done, family is more important
to Larry than anything else in his
life. We wish him the best in a well
deserved retirement.

ten eighth graders with their
seventh grade alternates from Saint
Bonaventure Catholic School
traveled to Rancho Santa Margarita
High School Saturday to compete in
the annual Academic Decathlon.
Undergoing a long day of super
quizzes, individual testing and logic
quizzes, the team walked away with
three medals. Theyve worked so
hard these last few months, states
Janice Callender, vice principal at
Saint Bonaventure Catholic School.
We are beyond proud of their
accomplishment right out of the
gate. And we will be back next
year. The team from Serra Catholic
won Best Overall out of the 16
Catholic schools participating and
will represent the Diocese of Orange
at the state competition in May.
This year marked the first time
Saint Bonaventure students have
competed in the event. Medal
winners were
Catherine Trinh,
1st place in
Literature; Kayli
Minear, 2nd place
in Religion; and
Aurora Johnson,
4thplaceinScience.
We were thrilled
to see Saint
Bonaventure at
the Decathlon,
says Sally Todd,
assistant superintendent for Orange
County Catholic Schools. She says
that the Academic Decathlon is the
only intermediate level competition
in the country.

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work
in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer
specialist. She had an ulterior motive. Irena
smuggled Jewish infants out in the bottom of the
tool box she carried. She also carried a burlap
sack in the back of her truck, for larger kids.
Irena kept a dog in the back that she
trained to bark when the Nazi
soldiers let her in and out of the
ghetto. The soldiers, of course,
wanted nothing to do with the dog and
the barking covered the kids/infants noises.
During her time of doing this, she managed
to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.
Ultimately, she was caught, however, and the Nazi's broke both of her
legs and arms and beat her severely.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had smuggled
out, in a glass jar that she buried under a tree in
her back yard. After the war, she tried to
locate any parents that may have
survived and tried to reunite the family.
Most had been gassed. Those kids
she helped got placed into foster family
homes or adopted.
In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel
Peace Prize. She was not selected. Al Gore
won, for a slide show on Global Warming.
Later President Barack Obama,
won for his work as a community
organizer for ACORN.
Thank God for all the Irena
Sendlers in the world and we
hope and pray there will be
more in our future.
I was in my back yard trying to launch a kite.
I threw the kite up in the air, the wind would
catch it for a few seconds, then it would come
crashing back down to earth.

just finished
reading
a new book
entitled; You
can be THE
Man of Your

Finding new
courage that he
never knew he
had, he stormed
into the
kitchen and
announced to his wife, "From now
on, you need to know that I am the
man of this house and my word is
the 'Law.' You will prepare me a
gourmet meal tonight, bring it to
me, and when I am done eating my
meal, you will clear the dishes and
serve me a scrumptious dessert.
After dinner, you are going to go
upstairs with me and we will make
love the way I want! Afterwards,
you are going to draw me a bath
so I can relax. You will put on
soothing music, wash my back and
towel me dry and bring me my
robe. You will massage my feet
and hands to relieve any last bit of
tension so that I can sleep like a
baby. Then tomorrow, guess
who's going to dress me and comb
my hair?"
The wife replied, "The funeral
director would be my first guess,
unless I have your arse cremated."

epublicans, Democrats, the tea party and the Occupy Movement -
it seems every American from 1 to 99 seems to have their own
favorite plan on how to tackle taxes
and federal spending. Assuming there's
room for one more plan, I've borrowed bits
and pieces from the current debate, but -
urged on by the political commentariat and
citizen-pundits alike - I've gone
big and bold.
First, the philosophy behind
my policy, drawn from careful
consideration of the debate to date:
For any plan to work, we need a
federal tax policy that's simple, fair,
and - this part is key to the maximum
extent possible, involves someone
else's money.
With that principle in mind, like Willie
Sutton, that early "corporate raider," we go where the
money is. Our national treasure: America's billionaires.
Under my plan, billionaires aren't just going
to pay more, they're going to pay it all - a 100
percent tax rate. And not just on what they
make in a year. We're going to take it
all - 100 percent of their entire
lifetime net worth.
As for the "99 percent," relax. We're
cutting your 2012 rate to 0 percent.
That's right: You're going to live like
you're a hedge fund manager on the
Newt Gingrich plan. We're going to
simplify that U.S. tax code at the same
time. The IRS will be replaced - by the
September issue of the Forbes 400.
Let's get started. The Obama administration has requested $3.7 trillion in
federal spending for 2012. Conveniently, that's a bit above $10 billion a day.
Fittingly, Bill Gates leads us off, with his $59 billion. Microsoft's founder
could pay from the moment we rang in 2012 to almost midnight January
6. Up next, Warren Buffet. The Sage of Omaha's $39 billion gets us to the
end of January 10.
Larry Ellison - $33 billion - gets us through the weekend. Koch
brothers David and Charles - $50 billion combined - cover the work week.
Then come four Walton Walmart heirs - sons and daughters of Sam, bringing
us eight days federal spending combined. George Soros, friend of Barack
Obama, is next; his $22 billion will cover two full days and a bit more.
Then comes Sheldon Anderson, Friend of Newt, with his $21.5 billion.
Another two days and change.
We've burned through Forbes' Top 10 billionaires - a total of nearly $310
billion.
It's January 31.
Forbes' No. 11 to 99 - folks like Google's Sergey Brin, Facebook's Mark
Zuckerberg, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Amazon's
Jeff Bezos - would get us through February and March, with nearly $600
billion. Numbers 100 to 200 - a collective $260 billion - get us past Tax
Day and almost to the end of April.
But by the second half of the Forbes 400, we're scraping the bottom of
the billionaire barrel. All 200 billionaires batched together barely cover a
month of federal spending. By mid-May, the federal burn rate reaches 10
billionaires per day.
Then, somewhere on the afternoon of May 26, we've run through our last
billionaire: fittingly, it's Washington's own Dan Snyder, owner of the
Redskins. All together, the lifetime earnings of the Forbes 400 have paid
for more than $1.4 trillion in federal spending. In other words, their lifetime
take has covered the federal deficit - for one year.
But enough celebrating. We're still $2,219,999,999,999.99 short if we
want to keep the federal government running until New Year's 2013. So on
to the millionaires. We've got more of them - but we need more, too: After
all, it takes 1,000 millionaires to equal one billionaire. In federal budget
terms, that's 10,000 millionaires a day. Trouble is, millionaires are fiscal
twigs in the federal fireplace. Mitt Romney's $20 million for 2010?
That's 3 minutes of federal spending. Romney's entire $190 million to
$220 million fortune? A bit over one half-hour. Newt Gingrich's $3.1
million 2010 take? Gone in 30 seconds. Barak Obama's book royalties plus
presidential salary ($1.7 million)? The federal government will spend that
in 14 seconds.
Hey, Steve Forbes, come back here. Thanks for compiling the federal
contributor list - and for your net worth of $430 million.
That's more than an hour of federal spending!
In order to pick up the pace, let's take the IRS data that tells us that in
2009, 236,000 Americans made $1 million or more. All told, at our 100
percent rate, that's $610 billion - another two
months of federal spending.
But there are still five months left to
fund.
Let's move from the people
who earn $1 million a year to the
people who have more than a million in
net worth. They're millionaires too, right?
After we've taken away all that wealth
and fed it to the U.S. Treasury, what's the
take away from all of this?
For one thing, $3.7 trillion is an enormous
amount of money - far more than our mortal minds
can comprehend. $6.9 million in federal spending per
second, every second of every minute, every hour of
every day including weekends, every day
all year. Even the lifetime earnings of all
U.S. billionaires combined aren't enough to
keep the federal government fed
for a single year.
But back to the budget. It's 2013,
and not a billionaire in sight. Wait a
minute: Where's that 99 percent? Please
step forward.

Saints have created
the worst kind of
headache for the
NFL at the worst
possible time.
Football has been known as a
physical sport since the game was first
invented. Defensive players are
taught to hit opposing players hard in
an effort to prevent the offense from
gaining yards, scoring points, and to
wear down their opponents. Some
teams make no bones about trying to
intimidate the opposition. But the
Saints have taken that concept to an
unacceptable extreme.
A number of Saints players and
officials, including Coach Sean
Payton, have admitted to a bounty
program that rewarded players for
intentionally injuring their opponents and knocking
them out of the game. The timing of the disclosure
has created a public relations nightmare for the
NFL, coming as it does when an estimated three
hundred former players are suing the league for
ignoring, if not encouraging, injuries that have
left them with brain damage that will lead to
dementia, affect their quality of life, and reduce
the number of years they live on earth.
At the center of the Saints pay-for-injury
scheme is former defensive coordinator Greg
Williams, who currently holds the same position
with the Saint Louis Rams. Williams was also
the head coach of the Buffalo Bills and a former
defensive coordinator withtheWashingtonRedskins,
prompting the NFL to expand its inquiry of
Bountygate to those teams as well. Anumber of
current and former players have confirmed that
Williams implemented his seek and destroy
program everywhere hes been. Players were
paid for each big hit, defined as knockouts and
cartoffs. The amounts ranged from $200 to as
much as $1,500 for injuring a player sufficiently
to put him on the sidelines.
Bountygate is the worst public relations
disaster for the NFL since the infamous Spygate
incident involving the New England Patriots and
head coach Bill Belichick. In response to an
admission that one of its employees taped a New
York Jets practice, the league fined the Patriots
$500,000 and docked the team a first round draft
pick. Belichick was also fined $250,000.
But Spygate pales in comparison to Bountygate
and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should
mete out punishment accordingly. In
addition to hefty fines to individuals
who knew of the scheme and lied about
it to league investigators, a loss of draft
picks and stiff suspensions should
apply. It wouldnt be excessive to sus-
pend Williams and Payton for at least
a season. Anything less would amount
to a slap on the wrist and leave the
league vulnerable to charges of failing
to protect the players from themselves.
While Bountygate comes at a
sensitive time for the NFL, it also gives
Goodell an opportunity to send a
strong message that such action will no
longer be tolerated in the NFL.

A
couple of months ago, I had the
opportunity to donate 24 basketballs
to the Huntington Valley Boys and
Girls Club on behalf of the Orange County
Water District (OCWD). How were these
basketballs used by a water district?
Why were they no longer needed? Herein,
lays a story of engineering creativity and
imagination, as well as a story of water
conservation and monetary frugality.
To capture as much of the Santa Ana River
water as possible, the District installed a long,
rubber inflatable dam in 1993. The dam is
320 feet long and 7 feet high. During flood
events, the dam can be deflated. When
deflated the dam lies flat on the riverbed.
When flows begin to subside, the dam can be
re-inflated so that water can be diverted from
the river channel. The cost to construct the
dam, pipes, valves, compressor and other
equipment was $3.2 million. It is estimated
that the additional storm water captured by
the dam paid for the dam in the first winter of
operation! There is no question that this dam
is a key part of the Districts groundwater
recharge system.
In 2010, District staff
noticed that there were signs
that the dam was wearing out.
Because of its importance, the
District began making plans
for replacing the dam. The
replacement rubber dam was
made in the USAand
weighed 40,000
pounds. Alarge crane
was used to lift
the dam off of the
delivery truck onto
the ground. In order
to move the dam
into position, 400
basketballs were pur-
chased and used like
ball bearings. Once
the dam was in-
stalled, the Districts
Board of Directors
decided to provide
the basketballs to
local charitable
organizations.
With this inflatable rubber
dam the OCWD can divert
15,000 acre feet of water
annually, water that need not
be purchased from the
Metropolitan Water District.
The savings can be approxi-
mately $12 million annually.
In conclusion, the children
at the Boys and Girls Club
can have fun playing basket-
ball, we can be proud of the
fact that we are conserving
this priceless resource and the
monetary savings can help
keep our water rates to users
at the lowest possible level.
Clearly a win, win, win for all
of us...and a series of darn
good ideas.

Dear EarthTalk:
What caused
Solyndra, a leading
American solar panel
maker, to fail last fall and what are the implications
for U.S. alternative energy industries?

Solyndra was a California-based maker of thin-film
solar cells affixed to cylindrical panels that
could deliver more energy than
conventional flat photovoltaic
panels. The companys novel system
mounted these flexible cells, made
of copper, indium, gallium and
diselenide (so-called CIGS), onto
cylindrical tubes where they
could absorb energy from any
direction, including from indirect and
reflected light.
Solyndras technology was so
promising that the U.S. government
provided $535 million in loan
guaranteeswhereby taxpayers foot
the payback bill to lenders if a
borrower fails. And fail Solyndra did:
In September 2011 the company
ceased operations, laid off all
employees, and filed for bankruptcy.
What caused this shooting star of alternative energy
to burn out so spectacularly after just six years in
business and such a large investment? Part of what
made Solyndras technology so promising was its low
cost compared to traditional photovoltaic panels that
relied on once costlier silicon. When Solyndra
launched, processed silicon was selling at historic
highs, which made CIGS a cheaper option, reports
Rachel Swaby in Wired Magazine. But silicon
producers overreacted to the price run-up and flooded
the market. The result was that silicon prices dropped
90 percent, eliminating CIGS initial price advantage.
Another problem for Solyndra was the falling price
of natural gasthe cleanest of the readily available
fossil fuelsas extractors implemented new
technologies including horizontal drilling and
hydraulic fracturing to get at formerly inaccessible
domestic reserves in shale rock. In 2001 shale gas
accounted for two
percent of U.S. natural gas output,
while today that number is closer to 30 percent. The
result of this increased supply is that the price of
natural gas has fallen by some 77 percent since 2008,
meaning utilities can produce electricity from it
much cheaper as well. Renewables simply cant
compete, adds Swaby.
The final blow to Solyndra was Chinas creation of
a $30 billion credit line for its nascent solar industry.
The result: Chinese firms went from making just
six percent of the worlds solar cells in 2005 to
manufacturing more than half of them today, says
Swaby. U.S. market share is now just seven percent.
Low natural gas prices have also hurt other
renewables, especially given the slow economy and
its stifling effect on innovation. To wit, the rate of new
wind-turbine installations in the U.S. has declined by
more than half since 2008. The fossil fuel industry
and its allies in Congress clearly see the solar and
wind industries as a threat and will try to kill [them],
says Representative Edward Markey, a top Democrat
on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Regardless of the challenges in furthering
renewables, the White House remains committed to
the greener path. In his recent State of the Union,
President Obama renewed the call for a federal
Renewable Energy Standard that would force utilities
to derive significant percentages of their power from
cleaner, greener sources. This would provide
much-needed regulatory uniformity and a more robust
and consistent market for renewable power, wherever
solar panels, wind turbines or other equipment happen
to be manufactured.
Navigating a wine list can be
daunting: Even wine geeks are
intimidated by the leather-bound tomes
that so many restaurants hand out.
When the wine list doesn't land on the
table with a thud, patrons are still met
with unrecognizable regions and
producers. Plus, no matter where you
dine or how much you know, prices
can be senseless.
Fortunately, deciphering a restaurant's
list doesn't have to be stressful. Here are
five simple tips.
Ask For Help: The era of the snooty
sommelier is over. Whereas yesteryear's
sommeliers were glorified sales agents
who intimidated their guests by pushing
expensive, predictable wines, today's
sommeliers are wine zealots, eager to
share their passion and palates. So if the
restaurant you're visiting employs a wine
professional, ask for advice. Most are
keen to help patrons find the perfect
wine, regardless of the price.
Be Brave: If you're at a restaurant
with an impressive wine list, seize the op-
portunity to be adventurous. Your dinner
companions will be impressed with your
courage, and you'll learn something new.
If you like Chardonnay, for example,
consider Viognier. If you like Sauvignon
Blanc, try Torrontes or Albarino. If you
typically order California Cabernet,
consider ordering Malbec or Sangiovese.
And don't be afraid of Merlot. Even
though it's become cool to bash the
grape, Merlot can be as rich as
Cabernet Sauvignon, and is generally
more approachable.
If everyone at your table has ordered
something different, opt for an
unusual wine that'll pair with virtually
everything. For white, think Austrian
Gruner Veltliner. For red, think
Sicilian Nero d'Avola.
Look For Value: I recently chatted
with Kathy Morgan
MS one of just
186 people world-
wide to earn the
"master sommelier"
designation and
she insisted that
good deals can be
found virtually
everywhere.
"Don't be afraid
to order cheaper
wines, especially if
the wine list was put
together by a
sommelier or a
wine professional,"
she explained. "If
thought is put into
the list, all the wines
should be good."
If there isn't a
sommelier, Morgan
advises people to seek out wines from
less popular regions. At steakhouses, for
example, you can often find deals on
Pinot Noir from France and the United
States, as most patrons order
bigger wines. And at every
restaurant, wines from Spain
typically offer a great value.
Try Some Glasses: Morgan
is also convinced that skipping
the bottle list can be a wise
decision. "At restaurants with
serious wine programs," she explained,
"sommeliers see
wines by the glass
as an introduction
to their programs
they know
that's where
people are going
to get their first
impression."
Ordering by
the glass also
enables patrons to
try a wine before
committing to it
it's not frowned
upon to ask your
server for a taste
of something
before ordering a
full glass. Plus,
ordering by the
glass makes it
easier to try a
variety of wines at one meal.
Remember That You're InCharge: Is
your wine too warm? Do you feel
pressured to spend more than you'd like?
Is your server refilling
your glass too quickly?
If the answer to any of
these questions is "yes,"
speak up!
Restaurants are noto-
rious for serving red
wine too warm reds
should always be served
slightly cool, at about 60-65 degrees. So
if your wine tastes like it's been sitting at
roomtemperature, ask for an ice bucket
or switch to a white wine or beer.
If the sommelier is steering you
towards something too expensive, there
was probably a miscommunication. So
say something. If you don't want to let
your guests know how much you're
spending, point to the price you're
thinking and ask for something similar.
Finally, don't be embarrassed to ask
your server to slowdown. I always insist
on finishing my glass of wine before it's
refilled. That way, I can track the wine's
evolution and better monitor how much
I've consumed.
While there are countless other
ways to navigate a restaurant's wine
program, these five tips should be easy
to remember and help elevate your
next dining experience.

According to recent data, the housing market
may have finally be reached bottom. For many
homeowners that have been watching the equity
in their home stripped away year after year, this
is welcome news. For prospective buyers who
have been hesitant to get in, this may be the sign
theyve been waiting for.
For buyers, the timing couldnt be any better.
Depressed values combined with record low
mortgage rates have pushed home affordability
to an all-time high. Many peo-
ple who never thought
theyd be able to afford a
home of their own are
finding that they can
buy a home and obtain
a mortgage payment
that is lower than what
theyre currently paying
for rent.
The primary variable thats been keeping
prospective buyers on the sidelines is the fear
that values might drop even further after theyve
bought. This may no longer be a cause for
concern. According to a recent report
from the Commerce Department, home
values actually rose in December of
2011 compared to the prior year.
The difference was small only 0.7% - but its
the first positive data that weve seen in a long
time regarding home values. Although the years
final figures still showed a drop in values, that
decline was only 2.4% from the prior year. In
California, values only fell 1.3% in 2011. These
figures are substantially less than the 10-20%
annual declines weve previously become
accustomed to, and a welcome sign that the
housing market may finally be stabilizing.
For those who already own a home, the pain
of watching their largest investment decrease in
value year after year may finally be reaching an
end. Many of these homeowners have been
unable to sell or refinance their existing homes
as a result of no longer having sufficient equity
to qualify for terms that offer any benefit.
This recent data provides welcome optimism
that the equity they want and need may soon
be coming back.
The data provides an additional optimism in
terms of refinancing programs. Lenders
eliminated many programs and the remaining
options became much stricter
as property values
dropped. Lenders will
become more likely to
relax their lending
criteria and open the
refinancing window to
more homeowners after
values turn
the corner.
Al t h o u g h
were not
there yet,
this recent
data might
be the light at the end of whats been a long and
painful tunnel for many.
On a broader note, this may be the data that
the country as a whole has been waiting for to
finally stage a recovery in our dragging
economy. The housing market has been the
foundation of every single economic recovery
for the last century. It happened after the Great
Depression, it happened in the 1980s, and its
been part of every other recovery in between. It
needs to happen again
in order for our
economy to recover
today.
This tenet is well
understood by US
policymakers. On
January 4, 2012, the
Federal Reserve
released an official
statement on the state of the US economy. The
very first line of that statement read:
Restoring the health of the housing market
is a necessary part of a broader strategy for
economic recovery.
In other words: fix housing first, and the rest
of the economy will follow.
Warren Buffett says along with equities,
single-family homes are a very attractive
investment right now.
Appearing live on CNBC's Squawk Box, Buffett
tells Becky Quick he'd buy up "millions" of
single family homes if it were practical to do so.
If held for a long period of time and purchased
at low rates, Buffett says houses are even better
than stocks. He advises buyers to take out a 30-
year mortgage and refinance if rates go down.
