Chapter 1

The problem and its background

Introduction
Many people having a hard time in studying English subjects and its usage. And in our country, its a must to learn. Using this language in a wrong way is more humiliating than having a low grades on your class card. Its like you murdered a man, and people sees you as a poorest man in the whole world. Kidding aside, speaking English inside the classroom or campuses is required especially in famous schools, for their students to practice their grammar and socializing skills using English language. But before you mastered the usage of English language and its grammar, you need to study step by step this subject and use this in all of a time. Almost all courses need to study and to master this language because English is our international and it was used worldwide. And us (as a student of Midway Maritime Foundation Inc.) we should know and study the usage of this language because, we will be using this when we finish our studies and to communicate with other professionals here in the Philippines or from other country. As of now, we are still taking some English language classes to improve and to gain more knowledge about this language. This research will open our minds and determine the problems encountered by 2nd year student of our school MMFI. The following information and topic will be tackled in next part of this research and chapters

Significance of the Study

This research will determine the problems encountered by the 2 nd year students towards English subject. Probably, the reason behind why we make this report/research for us to know our own difficulties by taking up this subject not only for us MMFI student, but also to our professor who teaches us this subject. When we determine the problem about this topic, we will also get the solution to make ourselves more effective at this subject. This research will help us 2nd year student to easily absorb the ideas or knowledge about English and apply it in our daily lives. Some practices will be included in this research to improve our skills to study this

Scope and Limitations

Our research was based in the answers of our co-students in 2nd year that only enrolled and studying here in MMFI. The other year levels are not included here in our research because our focus is in the 2nd year students of our school. We only include the information that related in our topic like problems, reasons, and solution. The students who answers our question and participate in our survey will not be named to protect their identity and for their privacy except us, because we are the researchers of this topic.

Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature
According to Ramirez (2003), there are around 118 maritime institutions all over the Philippines, producing thousands of seafarers over the years, thus helping make the country the labor capital of the world (p. 279). Students in the maritime field enroll in courses such as BS Marine Engineering and BS Marine Transportation. The maritime field is heavily reliant on constant and exact communication as well as understanding of mathematical formulas and their application on the field (c.f. Sampson & Zhao, 2003). Students are also expected to be proficient in English since the technical jargon is mainly in English, and because of the high probability of working in a multicultural environment. Cwilewicz & Pudlowskis (1998) work on didactic programs for a maritime academy in Poland state exactly this same view: to ensure safety of their passengers and colleagues, maritime students must also learn effective communication skills. An accompanying issue, however, concerns the quality of English in the maritime field. Winbow (2002) points out that in most countries, maritime professionals generally lack English communication skills. This generalization is attributed to the status of English in the countries where these professionals come fromas either ESL (English as a Second Language) or EFL (English as a Foreign Language). More often, miscommunication due to cultural differences and the perceived lack of proficiency in the English language of these maritime students are identified as sources of concern in the language classroom. With the involvement of technical terms/jargon and the high use of written and spoken communication, it is therefore even more imperative for maritime professionals to undergo extensive English communication skills training. Of course, cross cultural and/or communication skills training must be contextualized to achieve maximum effectiveness. After finding out that most available materials in ESL maritime English teaching are designed for more traditional teaching of English, Benton (2003) suggests that maritime instructors use materials that suit the specific needs of their maritime students.

Research Methodology
This chapter provides justification of the means in which the study was accomplished and at the same time helps in giving purpose and strength to the validity and reliability of the collected information that makes this particular research practice truthful and analytic. It presents methods and procedures utilized by the researchers by pursuing answers to the questions raised in the study.

Research Design
In order to for us to create a precise conclusion in our topic, we created our own strategy and techniques to collect information and to make our research more effective and in order. First, we analyze our topic and think of some related ideas that can be helpful in our research. We let our mind to think of anything related in our topic and share it with our group members to create an idea or information that is suitable in this research. After we finalized our ideas, we composed a couple of questionnaires that can give us more information that we needed to build a more precise ideas in this research paper. After making some questionnaires, we look for the appropriate respondents for this topic. We asked them some questions randomly and we gather their answers to analyze their thoughts about this topic. And then, after we gather some information, we arrange and look for the other information that is needed in other part of this research. We arrange those information and create a final conclusion regarding this topic from the survey that weve done. We used descriptive as our based category for our research design, because we cannot build our own technique or strategy without any based information or idea. This method is something more and beyond just data gathering. Furthermore, this follows logically after careful classification of data. Facts obtained may be accurate expressions of central tendency or deviation or of correlation; but the report is not research unless discussion of those data is not carried up to the level of adequate interpretation.

pg. 5

Respondents
The respondents for this research paper are the 2 nd year students of MMFI who are taking English subject. Even the researchers belong to the 2nd year students and we also asked ourselves about this topic. And we used the random sampling as our guide in picking respondents. Random is kind of sampling which everyone in the population of the inquiry has an equal chance of being selected to be included in the sample. This is also called the lottery or raffle type of sampling. This may be used if the population has no differentiated levels, sections, or classes.

Instrumentation
The instruments that were used in gathering pertinent data for this research are the following: Survey Questionnaire Primary data are gathered with the aid of the predetermined questionnaire consistently distributed to the respondents. This type of survey questionnaire is also called close-ended questionnaire. Close-ended survey questionnaire are also used in obtaining the information relevant to this study in order to draw out substantial amount of information yet limited in number. In administering the tool, respondents gathered selfreported information through self-administration of questions in a paper-pencil format. This method is useful in collecting data for the following reasons: subjects were asked to respond to the same set of questions in the same order, they had the same set of options for their responses, and it is economical. In a questionnaire using closed-ended questions, the researcher offered a list of answers that will be checked or chosen by the respondent. Closeended questionnaires are not limited two alternative replies of true or false from which the subjects choose the one that matched the appropriate answer. Further, close-ended questionnaires facilitate easy tabulation and orderly treatment of data. The questionnaires are more convenient and provide fairly straightforward information relatively useful for the

pg. 6

solutions of the problem posed. It also served as an aid for deliberate and immediate tallying because of the limitation of time for the prescribed duration of the research investigation.

Interview Interview is an effective means to accumulate some information and facts that are based from authorized individuals and experiential knowledge. The information gathered from the interviewee were directly quoted or adapted to support the initial observations of the researcher. Analysis and discussion of findings were incorporated to both literatures and facts obtained from the survey. Using the theories and principles of marine education, the researcher came up with his discussions, conclusion and recommendations as a product of empirical interpretation and analysis.

Data Gathering Procedure

Quality and quantity of information are at stake that is why this portion is considered to be an arduous part of the paper. Upon writing this part, we consider the sources of our information which is our English Professor for the topic, different kinds of literature books related to our topic, and 2nd year level students of MMFI. We interview our respondents like a normal interview. First we asked them their name, year level and course. After that, we asked them if they have encountered some problems about taking English subject. We also asked them some of our question that we created to get more information and idea about our topic. But, we only choose the people who will answer our questions because some of the students is not cooperating in this activity.

Statistical Treatment
Mathematical skill is needed in doing this section of our research. Tallying the responses of our respondents after retrieving the questionnaires will take place. Moreover, Padilla et al. (2002) discussed that at this phase of our research, statistical computations used are described in details.

pg. 7

In getting accurate result, we as the researcher should follow the standard formula in knowing the percentage. The frequency is to be divided to the total number of respondents and multiply it by a hundred (which is constant).

P=f/Nx100

Where: P percentage f frequency N total number of respondents

Example : P = N/A f = 20 N = 40

Solving: p=f/Nx100 p= 20/40 x 100 p= 0.5 x 100 P= 50%

Chapter 4
Presentation, Analysis & Interpretation of data

In this research we achieve our goal and that is to identify the problems that have been encountered by the 2nd year MMFI students. Through asking the 2nd year students of MMFI and cooperation of my group mates, we successful collect and gathered information about our topic.

Conclusion
Almost all of our respondents having trouble in studying English subjects, maybe because of their state of life, their previous school and environment. But even they come from a good school or they have a good professor, if they did not help their selves to study or practice this language, they will not improve and be good in this aspect. And we observe that we have good English professors in MMFI and that is based on our survey.

Recommendations
After we create our research and surveys, we realized that the problems that 2 nd year MMFI students encountered in English subjects can be resolve by implementing some English exercises, rules, activities and so on. In giving exercises, it gives the professors the idea of the ability or knowledge about of a student in English language. It is important for them to know the topic or ideas that they need to teach to their students and to tackle so they will have the step by step learning. In implementing English rule in our campus, it practices the ability to speak fluently in English language, some of the students having a hard time with pronunciation of words and in constructing a complete sentence. By implementing this rule it will improve their skills in English language not only the 2nd year MMFI students, but the whole courses and levels in this school. There is a lot of way to resolve the problems encountered in English subject, but the most effective way to avoid or resolve this problems is to help ourselves to be good in this aspect, because it will be useable when we finish our studies and start working.
