APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

1 Cassie Normand Introduction to Psychology Due: December 8, 2011

Well Id like to start off by saying that over all I learned a lot from this class and I enjoyed it quite a bit. In this class I learned specific things about myself and I learned things that may help me in my future as a radiographer. But I guess the question here is what exactly I learned. We started off the year by learning the way people react in situations. There are different theories to explain the way people react, and different ones are appropriate to different situations. There is the common sense theory, the James-Lange theory, the Cannon-Bard theory, the Schachter-Singer theory, and the Le Doux theory. Knowing that different people react in different ways in situations is good to know when going into the health care profession and working with patients who may not be happy about the situations there in. Then we learned what parts of the brain interpret what, which went along with my anatomy class and was interesting to learn what actually occurred in these different regions. After that we moved onto dreams. I learned how the REM sleep schedule works and how this is the portion of the night that we dream in. Being able to explain what REM sleep is and how important it is to a persons health is useful information in the health field. We then learned about conditioning. How a person is conditioned to respond to different medical related stimuli is very important to be able to understand. Knowing how they respond

and why they respond that way can be the difference between getting a procedure you need done and not getting it done. We then moved onto the theories of motivation. What motivates a person to do something, whether it is a bodily need or a reward. Maybe a patient needs a motivation to keep getting treatments and knowing how this works you can help them through it. We learned about different types of learning, like latent learning and the rats. The way a reward was introduced into the experiment determined how quickly they made it through the maze. We also learned about observational learning where a child beat up a bobo doll. The child learned more from observation than being told something. We then learned about memory and how it works. We learned about both long term and short term memory. This is important because as a radiographer I will be working with elderly who have fallen and hurt themselves. And its a possibility they may have problems with their memory. Itll be important to know how memory works to help work with them. I also learned cool tricks to help commit things to long term memory which helps with studying for tests. We then moved onto human development. We learned about how parenting affects how a child will be later in life. We talked about the different types of attachments between an infant and mother and how it affects the child later in life and we talked about the different types of parenting styles. We then learned about Eriksons stages of development and how we either positively or negatively develop different qualities during different stages of our lives. We learned about the different personality types. About how a person can be extraverted or introverted, sensing or intuitive, thinking or feeling and judging or perceiving. I learned I am an introverted, sensing, feeling and judging person. I believe this is a good description of me.

made me understand that even I conform to things to fit in. We comply with things we know are wrong to seem consistent. And marketers take advantage of this. I think everyone has fallen victim to this at least once, I know I have. We then talked about why we obey. We commit to authority because we hold a certain amount of faith in it. When working in groups we tend to loaf and let others do the work. I have been guilty of doing this in the past. We will also agree with things we dont really agree with so that we dont seem like the odd one out. Ive also been guilty of doing this as well. We then concluded with psychological disorders. We discussed anxiety disorders, mood disorders and schizophrenia. Working in a hospital I may be exposed to these things. And I should understand how they work. We learned about anxiety disorders like panic attacks, panic disorder, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. We learned about mood disorders like major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. And we learned about schizophrenic disorders.
