On31January2011theGloballyResponsibleLeadershipInitiative(GRLI)andtheWorldBusinessSchool CouncilforSustainableBusiness(WBSCSB)withactivesupportoftheUnitedNationsbackedPrinciplesfor ResponsibleManagementEducation(PRME)Secretariatannouncedastrategicpartnershiptodeliverahigh levelreportonthefutureofbusinessandmanagementeducationinthecontextoftheUnitedNations ConferenceonEnvironmentandDevelopment(UNCEDRio+20)inJune2012.

Background

TheWBSCSBinitiallyproposedareportoutlineentitled50+20Report:BusinessEducationfortheWorld makingalinktothebreakthroughreportsofthe1950sandtheneedforthetransformationofbusinessthat hasbecomeevidentandneedstotakeplaceinthecoming20years.TheGRLIhadbeenworkingseparately onablueprintofthebusinessandleadershipschoolofthefuturewiththedevelopmentofanewgeneration ofgloballyresponsibleleadersatitsheart.AstheWBSCSBandGRLIjoinedforces,theUNGC'sPrinciplesfor ResponsibleManagementEducation(PRME)initiativerecognisedthepotentialofsuchareporttomakea significantcontributiontoRio+20anddecidedtoactivelysupportthiseffort.The50+20projectwasborn.

Why50+20?

Currentlybusinessandmanagementeducationinitiativesandinstitutionsfunctioninlinewithanagenda thatwassetduringthe1950s,whentheFordandCarnegieFoundationssponsoredtworeportstopromote thescientificrigorandtheacademiclegitimacyofhigherbusinesseducationintheUnitedStates.Ithas thereforebeen50+yearssincetheagendaformanagementeducationhasbeenresetandtheworldwasa verydifferentplacefromtheoneweknowtoday. TheupcomingRIO+20UnitedNationsConferenceonSustainableDevelopment(June2012)willmarkthe 20thanniversaryofthe1992RioEarthsummit.Ithasthereforebeen20yearssinceGovernmentshavebeen collectivelyurgedtorethinkeconomicdevelopmentandfindwaystohaltthedestructionofirreplaceable naturalresources. Itisatthisjunctureinhistorywherethe50+20projecttakesactiontoresetthemanagementeducation agenda.

Purposeandaimsof50+20

Thepurposeof50+20istoensurethatbusiness,managementandleadershipschoolsofthefutureprovide

educationandresearchthatisrelevant&applied,holistic&integrative,responsible&sustainable,inter disciplinary&multilevel,and,ofcourse,learningoriented. Webelievethattheeconomicsystemisbroken,thatthemajorityofbusinessschoolsonbalancedomore harmthangood,andthatmanagementeducationshouldberecreatedtohelpensureasustainablefuture. Stage1oftheprojectseekstosparkbreakthroughchangebydeliveringthe50+20reportcomprisingof: 1. Asummaryagendathathighlightsthevision,thechallengesandtheemergingsolutionsthatwillbe presentedattheRIO+20UnitedNationsConferenceonSustainableDevelopmentinJune2012. Themajorityofcurrenteffortsarefocusedondeliveringthisagenda. 2. Acomprehensivebookfortheinspiredmanagers,businessstudentsandgeneralpublicoutliningthe futurebusinessschoolinpragmaticandcaptivatinglanguage(publishingthereportafterJune2012) 3. Basedontheagendaandbookseveralcommunicationpiecesareplannedforreachingspecific audiences.Suchmaterialmayincludeamanifesto,pointedarticles(popularandacademic),butalso visualmaterialsuchasvideosandinterviewswithstakeholdersandinvolvedcontributors. Astheprojectgrowsinreachandcapacity,futurestagesof50+20willenable: Colaboratoriesandinnovativeprojectsatparticipatingbusinessschoolsaroundtheglobe,showcasing emergingpracticesandpioneeringsolutionsofaresponsible&relevantbusinesseducation. Thecreationofnewleadershipandmanagementschoolinitiativesaspioneersthatshowcase enlightenednewmodelsofbschools.

Audienceforthe50+20report

Theintendedtargetaudienceforthe50+20reportisdefinedbytheirmindsetratherthantherolesthey currentlyhold.Thismindsetistypifiedbyawarenessandunderstandingoftheglobalchallengesweface,a senseofurgencytobringaboutchange,andanunwaveringbeliefthatweowntheresponsibilitytodoso. The50+20Agendaempowerswillingactorsthatmayinclude: Buyersofmanagementeducation(corporations,etc.) Investorsinmanagementeducation(funders,policymakers) Influencers(media,rating,ranking,accreditations) Purveyors(forwardthinkingDeansandeducators) Futurestudentsandtheirinfluencers

Themessagewillbetailoredtospecifictargetaudiencesandchannelledviaarangeofcommunicationmedia aspreviouslyindicated.

2) StGallenretreat:Input,objectives,participantsandoutcomes 2.1)

The50+20projectfirstconvenedduringApril2011inNewYorkwhereparticipantsengagedinaPresencing sessionfacilitatedbyOttoScharmer(MIT,TheoryU).Thesessionwasdesignedtogaindeepalignmenton thevisionfortheprojectandresultedintheformationofworkstreamsthatwouldtacklethedevelopment andwritingofchapters2,3,4and5.Therewere25participantsfrom11countriescomprisingmainlyof businessschoolProfessors,Deansandanumberofeducationalconsultant.Therewerenostudents,NGOs orrepresentativesfromlargebusiness.Itwasagreedthatsubsequentmeetingsshouldhaveawider representationfromsuchstakeholdergroups.

Therearecurrently11coauthoringinstitutes(in9countriesandacrossallcontinents)fundingStage1of 50+20.FundsraisedarepaidintothebankaccountoftheGloballyResponsibleLeadershipInitiative FoundationwhichisanonprofitfoundationunderBelgianLaw.Fromanaccountingperspective,thesefunds areringfencedseparatelyfromtheGRLIsgeneralfundsandmayonlybepaidoutforthepurposesofthe 50+20initiativeanditsmandatedprojects.Shouldthe50+20projectdissolve,thecommitteewillallocate thefundstoamultiorganizationalinitiative(s)thatiscongruentwiththeaimsofthe50+20Project. 50+20willprovideanaccountofexpendituresincurredona6monthlybasisforscrutinybyanyfund contributoronrequest.Thefirstsuchreportwillbepreparedforthesixmonthsending30September2011 andwillbeavailablebytheendofOctober2011.
