Why50+20?
Currentlybusinessandmanagementeducationinitiativesandinstitutionsfunctioninlinewithanagenda thatwassetduringthe1950s,whentheFordandCarnegieFoundationssponsoredtworeportstopromote thescientificrigorandtheacademiclegitimacyofhigherbusinesseducationintheUnitedStates.Ithas thereforebeen50+yearssincetheagendaformanagementeducationhasbeenresetandtheworldwasa verydifferentplacefromtheoneweknowtoday. TheupcomingRIO+20UnitedNationsConferenceonSustainableDevelopment(June2012)willmarkthe 20thanniversaryofthe1992RioEarthsummit.Ithasthereforebeen20yearssinceGovernmentshavebeen collectivelyurgedtorethinkeconomicdevelopmentandfindwaystohaltthedestructionofirreplaceable naturalresources. Itisatthisjunctureinhistorywherethe50+20projecttakesactiontoresetthemanagementeducation agenda.

Purposeandaimsof50+20
Thepurposeof50+20istoensurethatbusiness,managementandleadershipschoolsofthefutureprovide

educationandresearchthatisrelevant&applied,holistic&integrative,responsible&sustainable,inter disciplinary&multilevel,and,ofcourse,learningoriented. Webelievethattheeconomicsystemisbroken,thatthemajorityofbusinessschoolsonbalancedomore harmthangood,andthatmanagementeducationshouldberecreatedtohelpensureasustainablefuture. Stage1oftheprojectseekstosparkbreakthroughchangebydeliveringthe50+20reportcomprisingof: 1. Asummaryagendathathighlightsthevision,thechallengesandtheemergingsolutionsthatwillbe presentedattheRIO+20UnitedNationsConferenceonSustainableDevelopmentinJune2012. Themajorityofcurrenteffortsarefocusedondeliveringthisagenda. 2. Acomprehensivebookfortheinspiredmanagers,businessstudentsandgeneralpublicoutliningthe futurebusinessschoolinpragmaticandcaptivatinglanguage(publishingthereportafterJune2012) 3. Basedontheagendaandbookseveralcommunicationpiecesareplannedforreachingspecific audiences.Suchmaterialmayincludeamanifesto,pointedarticles(popularandacademic),butalso visualmaterialsuchasvideosandinterviewswithstakeholdersandinvolvedcontributors. Astheprojectgrowsinreachandcapacity,futurestagesof50+20willenable: Colaboratoriesandinnovativeprojectsatparticipatingbusinessschoolsaroundtheglobe,showcasing emergingpracticesandpioneeringsolutionsofaresponsible&relevantbusinesseducation. Thecreationofnewleadershipandmanagementschoolinitiativesaspioneersthatshowcase enlightenednewmodelsofbschools.

4) Stage1:Funding,financeandauthorship
Therearecurrently11coauthoringinstitutes(in9countriesandacrossallcontinents)fundingStage1of 50+20.FundsraisedarepaidintothebankaccountoftheGloballyResponsibleLeadershipInitiative FoundationwhichisanonprofitfoundationunderBelgianLaw.Fromanaccountingperspective,thesefunds areringfencedseparatelyfromtheGRLIsgeneralfundsandmayonlybepaidoutforthepurposesofthe 50+20initiativeanditsmandatedprojects.Shouldthe50+20projectdissolve,thecommitteewillallocate thefundstoamultiorganizationalinitiative(s)thatiscongruentwiththeaimsofthe50+20Project. 50+20willprovideanaccountofexpendituresincurredona6monthlybasisforscrutinybyanyfund contributoronrequest.Thefirstsuchreportwillbepreparedforthesixmonthsending30September2011 andwillbeavailablebytheendofOctober2011. Inthecomingmonthsthesteeringcommitteeandprojectmanagerwillrefineandpublishanumberof projectgovernancedocumentsthataddressimportantquestionssuchas: Budgetandfundingrequiredtocoveressential50+20costsrunninguptotheRioevent o e.g.Whatisourfinancialpositionandrequirements?Howwillfundsbedistributed?
