We talked about all the factors which affect a flight such as weight & balance, aerodynamics, how parts of the airplane work and weathers impact. about the opportunity to participate in this program. Upon returning to land at Lake Elmo airport (21D) and experiencing the refuling process we pushed the aircraft (N5154D) back into the hangar and had the post flight briefing.

Teacher Orientation Program or TOP Flight!

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has a program which not many are familiar with, the Teacher Orientation Program or commonly known as TOP Flight. On a beautiful winter Wednesday, January 26, 2011 the St. Croix Squadrons own Aerospace Education Officer, Maj. Paul Prior had the opportunity to conduct a TOP Flight with Amy Stattick (477071) of Scandia, Minnesota. As a homeschooling parent, she found out about CAPs TOP Flight program at a student lead CAP recruiting event. Amy Stattick submitted the request for the opportunity to participate in the TOP flight program and was approved by Minnesota Wing AE Officer, Blaze Cunningham. After a few failed attempts to go (bad weather, no aircraft, etc.) the opportunity finally presented its self and we met at the St. Croix hangar at 3:30 that afternoon. I introduced myself and pro-

She indicated how much fun she had on the flight and how beneficial the TOP flight program is for CAP. She had also indicated her son was building a rocket to launch as part of a school project. St. Croix Hosts Combined Wright Bros Camp!

On 11 & 12 February 2011, the St. Croix Squadron held another Joint Cadet training weekend for those cadets looking to achieve their Wright Brothers Award an d promotion to Cadet Staff Sergeant (C/SSgt.) This joint effort was once again the combined senior and cadet staffs of the St. Paul & St. Croix Squadrons. This training is geared toward more advanced training for the junior Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) and other leadership positions within the squadron then than that of the Curry Camp which was a first venture between the two squadrons. The Deputy Commanders for Cadets, 1st. Lt. Amy Pahr of St. Paul and Capt. Jay Sliwinski of St. Croix Squadron have had much success with past combined training camps that this has become the model for future training between these two cadet rich squadrons. This type of training event provides each squadron with the opportunity for advancement for their cadets but also provides the opportunity for each squadrons cadet staff to practice what they have learned thus far in their CAP training and careers. On their own, each squadron would not be able to field enough cadets to warrant putting on this type of training , but together with pooling recourses this has been a good receipt for success. St. Croix Receives A Rare U.S. Flag Gift!

On 13 January 2011, the St. Croix Squadron was honored to receive a rarely granted gift from the Architect of the United States Capitol. Our Minnesota Wing Commander, Col. Thomas Theis had delivered to us this gift forwarded to us from the Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters. We were presented with a United States Flag which was flown over one of our Nations Capitol buildings as part of a commemorative gift. Our squadron was presented with a 3 x 5 United States flag and a certificate which reads; This is to certify that the accompanying flag was flown over the United States Capitol on December 13, 2010. At the request of the honorable Senator Al Franken, United States Senator, this flag was flown on the occasion of Wreaths Across America Observation date. The certificate was signed by Stephen T. Ayers AIA, LEED AP, Architect of the Capitol 2011-008670-001. We at the St. Croix Squadorn would like to thank the efforts of Minnesota State Senator, Al Franken for taking his time to acknowledge the Civil Air Patrol and the Wreaths Across America program which is dedicated to remembering our nations fallen veterans. If you would like to view this flag and certificate, we will be displaying these items in the hangar in the near future.

St. Croix Announces Members for 2011 Color Guard Squad!

In early January the St. Croix Color Guard (CG) Squad announced its beginning line up for the 2011 Color Guard season. This years Color Guard staff positions are; CG Commander, C/CMSgt. Ethan Pike, his CG Deputy Commander, C/MSgt. Ryan Malcolm, CG training staff members, C/CMSgt. Alex Swanson & SMSgt. Mohammad Battah. Officers in charge of Color Guard (OICG) are 1st. Lt. Scott Richardson & SM. Susan Rogers. Since October 2010, dedicated Saturday training days have been set aside and all members had to tryout for positions on the squad. With a lot of new cadets in the squadron, many came to try out and be apart of this years squad. With many color guard presentation events scheduled so far, we are looking to secure a minimum of 15 members which would make up at least 3 squads of 5 members each. This desired number is also what is required for Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Color Guard competitions. The competition s require a squad of 4 with one backup member allowed. Over the months, many cadets turned out for tryouts. The training which was given concentrated on the areas of ; uniform Inspection, standard drill, Indoor & outdoor presentations, Aerospace quiz panel questions, flag bearing and protocol, rifle training & guard positions and team marching. Cadets who made the Color Guard Squad are: C/A1C. Lucas Biniek, C/Amn. Colton Dexter, C/Amn. Philip Harris, C/Amn. Joy Horn, C/SrA. Valeriya Kolyadenko, C/Amn. Jacob Kummer, C/Amn. Kyle Reinsberg. Congratulations and good luck on this seasons presentations!

Cadet Training and Testing Day Success!

The St. Croix testing officers have once again set aside a cadet testing and training day for cadets who need to have physical fitness tests, drill testing and milestone tests done in order to earn awards and promotions. Although most cadets are now registered on the electronic online testing method, some testing still needs to be done in person. All of the cadet milestone tests are still done with paper and pencil with a testing officer. Wright brothers, Gen. Billy Mitchell, Amelia Earhart and Spaatz tests are just a few. Cadets have the opportunity to advance through achievement testing every sixty days. So the testing officers have set aside a Saturday roughly every sixty days to give cadets the opportunity to advance for promotions and awards. This is the brain-child of testing officer, 1st. Lt. Charles Jents who has served as Deputy Commander for Cadets and is now the St. Croix Squadrons Emergency Services (ES) Officer. He recognized early on the need for our testing officers to get together and provide the time just for testing and promotions. The squadron has had great turnout in the past with more than 20 cadets who turn out each time to advance their CAP cadet careers. The cadet command staff turn out and get their work completed and all the paperwork needed to get done right away and this enables promotions to be processed in a quicker turn around for each cadet. With each weeks squadron meeting jam-packed with many scheduled events, there just is not always enough time to get testing tasks completed in the time allotted. Cadet staff members who turned out to make this event such as success were; C/MSgt. Mohammad Battah, C/SrA. Valeriya Kolyadenko, C/TSgt. Ryan Malcolm. They also provided the drill testing for each cadet who needed this to promote. By providing these testing days ,this assures our cadets are some of the best trained and some of the finest leaders within the Minnesota Wing. Congratulations to all of the cadets who wisely used this day to complete achievements and forward progress in their personal enrichment.

The Chaplains Corner Breathe Deep, Fly High

You are probably wondering what this little phrase means. Well, it is going to be the name of our chaplains Corner for future articles in our Squadrons Newsletter. The phrase is actually a greeting that is found in the movie Dinatropia. The greeting occurs when someone who is a worker of the earth (planters and harrowers) greets someone who is the sky (a flyer). For me, how appropriate to call our chaplains corner this because of what we do best and that is to Fly High! As we develop this section of our newsletter, I hope to touch issues of leadership focused on those things that shape our morals, values and virtues. These are the items that I feel are core to shaping who we are, how we live, and how we conduct ourselves as members of an elite force called The Civil Air Patrol. Many Blessings and
