I NFORMATION

Deadline for all submissions is the 25th of the preceding month. Email submissions to jkalemis@comcast.net or deliver a hardcopy. All photographs are by 1Lt. James Kalemis unless otherwise noted.

Our squadron once again happily supported the VFW in Johnsburg by participating in the Memorial Day parade. This year was particularly memorable due to the River Wreath Service. Eleven current conflict veterans handed a wreath to Congresswoman Melissa Bean. Ms. Bean with Mrs. Marie Hockett, grandaughter of WWI Marine Gunnery Sergeant Fred Zimmermann, were taken to the middle of the Fox River by the McHenry County Sheriff's River Patrol. Then Mrs. Hockett tossed the wreath into the river in memory of Mr. Zimmermann. The Color Guard led the parade behind the active servicemen and posted the Colors during the memorial presentation. The presentation included laying the wreath at the Veteran's Park memorial flanked by the Color Guard. Our Color Guard was an outstanding example of service and excellence and I am very proud of them. "All the crowd around me were watching, very respectfully, actually quite riveted, both the current conflicts vets, the wreath presentation, the CAP escorts ... all of it. Don & I have heard nothing but compliments: 'those are some mighty sharp kids and 'that was pretty darn nice'", said Mrs. Barbara Klapperwich, Memorial Day Parade Coordinator.

C/AB Tom Oleson The McHenry County Composite Squardon Color Guard has been asked to participate in several community events in the last couple weeks. On Saturday morning May 20, C/CMSgt Emily Medina, C/MSgt Scott Hendler, C/SMSgt Jared Hendler, and C/AB Tom Oleson posted the Colors for the Grand Opening event at the new Sears Grand Store in McHenry. Thanks to C/SMSgt Jared Hendler for stepping in at the last moment to cover an absence. Everything went smoothly, and was well-received by those in attendance. Afterwards, we were rewarded for our efforts by a nice thank-you note and monetary tribute from Sears Grand, which we plan to use for the purchase of some much-needed Color Guard equipment. On Memorial Day Sunday, C/CMSgt Emily Medina, C/MSgt Scott Hendler, and C/AB Tom Oleson posted the Colors again for the Crystal Lake Ev-Free Church services. And this time, Major Ken Anderson gushed his praises-stating not once, but twice that it was a "perfect" execution! It is our honor and pleasure to represent the MCCS Squadron as your Color Guard!

SPEECH

Imagine a C-130, all C-130s are airplanes but not all airplanes are C-130s. The same principle goes with leaders and followers. All leaders are followers but not all followers are leaders. Both the leaders and followers main goal is to get the job done, whatever that job may be. A follower is someone who learns from leaders, from experience and from other followers. A follower follows a leader. A leader creates the goals and provides motivation for others to follow them, while they too are always learning. Which goes back to, all leaders are followers but not all followers are leaders. There are five aspects of followership: respect for authority, positive attitude, integrity, self discipline, and listening. Respect for authority is shown by a salute. When rendered shows that you are junior to that person, but more importantly, you acknowledge the hard work and effort that person has done to accomplish what they have done.

Attitude is defined as the state of mind behind ones actions and the best way to have a good attitude is through understanding. Attitude is probably the most contagious of all the follower traits. Integrity is like the wings of an airplane. The airplane represents you, the air around the airplane represents life in general and all the people in it, and the design and shape of the airplane represents your overall character. You can be the coolest jet, but if you loose your integrity, if your wings break off, you will eventually crash. Discipline is doing whats right even though no one told you to do it. Self discipline is is necessary so the whole group can function as one. Listening is being open to others. It does not mean that if you are deaf you cant be a good follower. It means to be open to ideas and to be able to interpret the speakers ideas and not words.

As we make our change of cadet command, lets take the time to thank those who have set an excellent leadership example over these past months, and give a word of encouragement to those who will now hold the reigns. Change is challenging, but we are ready for it! Thank you, C/Capt Mangano, for your leadership. It has been fantastic to work with youI remember the first board we provided for you And now... we are challenged to provide a board that will challenge you! C/2Lt DeCraene, thank you for your willingness to provide cadet leadership over the next year. We have already been impressed with your cadet staff selection, your ideas to move us forward, and we are looking forward to squadron growth under your leadership. On another note: How about that color guard? We have had some difficulty deciding who has time and energy for this extra duty assignment, but cadets have stepped up to the plate and gotten the job done. I appreciate your efforts; your practice is paying offliterally. Thank you, C/CMSgt Medina for seeing us through, and thank you to each of the CG team members and subs. With gratitude to each of you and to the senior members who are faithful in providing the framework,

Could it be that some of the Leadership skills that CAP teaches are sinking in? Each week I await our meetings with anticipation, it never fails that I am impressed with a leadership skill that I see further developed in one of our cadets. This week C/TSgt Peterman caught my attention. There just seemed to be a difference in his willingness to communicate, I cant quite put my finger on it, but I felt it. There has been growth, and I anticipate more. As we see more and more of our cadets selected for staff positions at encampments, we can look at our unit with pride and know that we are producing the leaders that CAP needs. Congratulations, C/CMSgt Medina, on your selection as 1st Sgt for summer encampment. C/SMSgt J Hendler you provided excellent leadership at the spring encampment and was recognized for your effort. You are finding that rank has its privileges, but it also carries heavy responsibility. Responsibility provides challenges for even more growth. You each have little engines, that when encouraged, can make it over the mountain. We seniors are privileged to walk beside you saying, you can make it, you can make it, yes you can! If you can lead here, among your peers in CAP, you can bet that you will be seen as a leader at your schools, in your community, at your colleges, better prepared to lead your future families, and at your work place, you should shine.
