An introduction to teaching in Romania with the British School of Bucharest

The British School of Bucharest opened in August 2000 in response to a demand in Bucharest for a high quality internationally recognised education. The aim of the British School of Bucharest is to provide students with the education and social skills needed for an ever changing world. The school has shown sustained growth since opening. Small class sizes complemented by additional educational support allow for a positive learning environment. The school aims: To provide a comprehensive international education based on the British National Curriculum of England. To provide a strong intellectual foundation that prepares students to continue their education anywhere in the world. To provide students with a positive stimulating, secure and caring environment that encourages the fulfilment of individual potential and the growth of self esteem in all areas: academic, social and personal. To encourage students to engage in open enquiry, creativity, decision-making and independence of thought To create an environment that develops knowledge and respect for different cultures, values and beliefs, and to be active and responsible citizens of the world community To develop within students an attitude of individual responsibility, based upon the values of honesty, respect, self-control, equality and concern for others. To foster partnerships between home and school in the learning process and engage the diverse resources and talents of our international community.

Making international education accessible

The British School of Bucharest follows the National Curriculum for England from EYFS up to Year 13 when students take their Alevel examinations for university entrance. They can then continue their education at the best universities in the world. We are recognised by the Romanian Ministry of Education to teach the British National Curriculum and in May 2009 we underwent our first ISI inspection. At present, BSB has over 80 Romanian employees and 52 foreign teaching staff. We have over almost 450 pupils ranging from crche to Year 13, representing 43 nationalities. Around 20% of our pupils are British and 25% of our pupils are Romanian, other major nationalities include French, German, Italian, and Greek. A strength of the school is the diverse school body. Teachers are are supported by around 35 Romanian teaching assistants; these teachers provide assistance in all Primary classes up to Year 6. Class sizes vary, our maximum numbers are 20 but most classes average around 17 students . All teachers are fully qualified native English speakers and enjoy a high level of PPA time supported by a strong EAL team. For our IGCSE and Alevel programme we offer Cambridge and Edexcel examinations in a broad selection of subjects.

Why Romania?
1. When travelling with the Mocanita up the valley one should keep in mind that this is like a journey back in time: 2. The impressive number of churches to be found in Bucovina, with their fine exterior and interior frescoes, have been preserved and handed down from mediaeval times. 3. Transfagarasan road is fantastic, and the differences of altitude and the curves represent a challenge for both cars and drivers. 4. Romanias collection of castles and fortresses perhaps best illustrates the rich medieval heritage of the country.

5. Romania is known worldwide for her award winning wines. 6. Dracula - as known today - represents the result of the intersection of some real historical events, legendary ones, related to the reign of Vlad Repes.

7. Situated in the heart of Romania, the city of Brasov benefits from the influence of an ancient history, just 12 km above it you can find Romanias most famous skiing resort, Poiana Brasov. 8. The mighty Danube River flows 1,788 miles and just before reaching the sea it forms the second largest and best preserved of Europes deltas.

Feel at home in Bucharest

Stockholm

The 500-year-old city of Bucharest, with a population of 2,100,000, was once touted as Small Paris and is one of the cheapest capitals in Europe. Many of the teachers find it easy to enjoy a high standard of living and save money.

Bucharest today, like any large capital, is a bustling modern metropolis full of life and diversity. Boasting a rich and full history, Bucharest offers attractive opportunities to enjoy and explore. Bucharest has two international airports, Otopeni Henri Coanda, and Baneasa Aurel Vlaicu. Otopeni -Henri Coanda Bucharests main airport, is 17km north of the city on the DN1. The easiest way to reach the city is to take a taxi and the trip should not cost more than 20 Euros. Baneasa aiport is much closer to the city centre (perhaps uniquely in Europe for a budget-airline dominated airport). There are two ways to reach the city from Baneasa, using the public transport 131 and 335 buses which stop outside, terminating at Piata Romana; or taxis which are very cheap and the fare to town should cost no more than 10 Euros, and take 15 minutes depending on traffic. From Bucharest it is very easy to travel to other places i.e Istanbul 45 min flight, Athens 1.5 hours flight, Rome 2 hours flight, Jordan 2 hours flight, Madrid 3 hours etc.

Of all the wonderful things that Bucharest has to offer, nightlife is not the least of them. There is something for everyone, from trendy bars to Irish pubs, lounge clubs and jazz clubs.
