RFID

An Innovation for Aviation Industry

Innovation the key to success

There is a strong potential for implementation of recent IT technologies in aviation, like RFID(Radio Frequency Identification). Major aviation industry players, such as IATA (International Air transport Association), Boeing or Airbus have recognized the potential huge savings and benefits of such technology being incorporated on a large scale basis. Application of RFID in aviation can be directed to a great variety of problems aiming at higher control, reducing costs or both. It is a proven concept; technology is available and standards are in place; and now is the moment to think how to incorporate it in our airports. State-of-the-art RFID technology and equipment is available today at reasonable costs. Definition of standards is being promoted by GS1 EPC global with the support of IATA.

RFID Technology
RFID tags, or simply "tags", are small transponders that respond to queries from a reader by wirelessly transmitting a serial number or similar identifier. There 3 types of RFID tags in relation to power or energy: Passive Semi-passive Active Rfid tag Rfid Reader communication

RFID tags fall into three regions in respect to frequency: Low frequency (LF, 30 - 500kHz) High frequency (HF, 10 - 15MHz) Ultra high frequency (UHF, 850 - 950MHz, 2.4 - 2.5GHz, 5.8GHz)

RFID-The advantage
Flexibility RFID do not require line of sight reading (like bar-code solutions). Ability RFID allows multiple simultaneous scanning and distinguish between different equipments. Accuracy RFID is fully automated and very accurate, with read rates higher than 99% (bar-code equipment seldom exceeds 95%, and can go as low as 60% or 70% in transfer situations in some airports).

Additional advantages include durability, data support (data on tag is possible to be updated)and low maintenance.
