A Lesson Plan in English III

I. Objectives:

With the use of pictures, the third year students with at least 80% accuracy will be able to:

A. explain the different kinds of sentences according to structure; B. give examples for each kind of sentence; and C. construct sentences basing from a certain picture.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: The Four Kinds of Sentences According to Structure

Value Focus: Teamwork and respecting ones ideas

References: Magazine 1. English Magazine A Slice of Life pages 12-13

Book

1. English Arts and Skills by Julie Cornelius pages 297-311 2. Prentice Hall Writing and Grammar Communication in Action by Joyce Armstrong Caroll, et.al., pages 336-338

Materials:

1. piece of cartolina containing sentences 2. rolled paper containing instructions 3. pictures of the physical condition of our environment 4. blank piece of manila paper which will be used by the students

III. Procedure:

A. Stimulating Activity:

1. The teacher requests the students to stand. The teacher posts some legend on the board. These are the legends: Blue- simple sentence Red- compound sentence White- complex sentence Yellow- compound- complex sentence

The teacher reads some questions and sentences to the students and they must choose among the four colors which is the correct answer. The students are given 10 seconds to think to choose and to line what color is their answer. Those who will not be able to answer the question correctly will be eliminated.

Here are the questions and sentences:

1. This kind of sentence consists of two or more independent clauses. -red

2. This sentence consists of one independent clause with one complete subject and on e complete predicate. -blue 3. This sentence is composed of two or more independent clauses and one or more subordinating clauses. -yellow 4. What kind of sentence is this example? The doll that the bride carries doesnt have arms. -white 5. This sentence consists of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. -white 6. I practiced daily until my writing improved, and my teacher was very satisfied with my effort. What kind of sentence is this? -yellow 7. We won the jingle contest. Is an example of what kind of sentence? -blue 8. I tried out for point guard, and my cousin tried out for center. What kind of sentence is that? -red 9. What kind of sentence does this example fall? The author of the book and the publisher went to the convention. -blue 10. I ran back to the school, and there I found the notes that I had lost. This sentence is what kind of sentence? -yellow

B. Actual Activity:

1. After the activity, the teacher asks the following questions: a. What is our topic all about? Four kinds of sentences according to structure

b. What are the four kinds of sentences? b.1. simple sentence b.3. Complex sentence b.2. compound sentence b.4. compound-complex sentence c. What is simple sentence? Simple sentence is composed of one independent clause with one complete subject and one complete predicate. d. How about compound sentence? Compound sentence is composed of two or more independent clauses. e. How about complex sentence? Complex sentence is composed of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. f. What is compound-complex sentence? Compound-complex sentence is composed of two or more independent clauses, and at least one dependent clause. 2. The teacher calls someone who will explain the sample sentences used in the first activity. 3. After the students explained the sentences the teacher divides class into four groups. She gives card boards to each group. The teacher presents sentences and each group will write simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex on their card boards. The group who earns greater points will be declared as a winner. Here are the sentences:

simple1. The earths condition is getting worse. Complex 2. Only a few answered the call when Mother Earth needs us. Compound 3. Mother nature needed our care and help, but only a few responded. Compound-complex 4. People continue to create damages to our environment; consequently, people are suffering environmental problems which are caused by humans. Complex 5. We must do something to cure Mother Earth so that we will not suffer at the end.

C. Follow-up Activity:

1. With the use of the same groupings, each group is given a picture about the physical condition of our environment. Basing on the picture, the students will construct a sentence depending on what kind of sentence they will be assigned. Each group is given 5 minutes to prepare and all members must be ready to explain their work because the teacher will randomly call someone in a group who will explain their work.

IV. Evaluation:

Directions: Use the following instructions to write five sentences of your own. Be sure that your sentences must be related to the environment.

Write a simple sentence with a compound subject and verb. Write a compound sentence with two independent clauses joined by Write a complex sentence with one independent and one subordinate

4. Write a complex sentence with one independent clause and two subordinate clauses. 5. Write a compound-complex sentence.

V. Assignment:

In your assignment notebook, construct one example sentence for each kind of sentence about the latest movie you saw.
