Tax break approved for K-Space

By Christy Vander Haagen
Special Writer

Village Council voted unanimously March 13 to approve an tax break for K-Space Associates Inc., at 2182 Bishop Circle East. According to materials provided by assistant village manager Courtney Nichols, the exemption will provide a 50 percent tax abatement on $85,754 in real personal property and $704,132 in real property improvements to their facility over the next seven years. The value of the tax

abatement is approximately $2,677 in village taxes and $6,065 in taxes from other entities including Scio Township, Dexter District Library, Dexter Community Schools, Washtenaw County, Washtenaw County Intermediate Schools and Washtenaw Community College. The property improvement project consists of a 6,800 square-foot addition to the existing facility which will help the company meet its growing demand for thin films and imaging products. The project is expected to be completed

within three weeks and, according to owner and company President Darryl Barlett, should lead to the addition of up to 12 employees to the companys current 21-member workforce. K-Space Inc. is a company specializing in the production of semi-conductors, according to Barlett. We have adapted our traditional semi-conductor technology to monitor the manufacturing of solar panels, Barlett said. That is one of the main reasons we have expanded. The goal of the Villages Industrial Facilities Tax

Abatement program is to encourage Dexter-based companies to invest in improving their businesses as well as to encourage new companies to invest in the community.

In other village council news:

Some residents from the Westridge subdivision were present to share their concerns about traffic safety with Council. Westridge Homeowners Association President Roger Sullivan addressed Council in regard to his recent request for a four-

way stop at Eastridge and Bridgeway. I would appreciate sheriff presence there as well, Sullivan said. Other Village and Westridge residents were present to share their concerns about overall pedestrian safety within the Village. The goal for the opening of Mill Creek Park, according to Community Development Manager Allison Bishop, is the weekend of Dexter Daze. We would like to celebrate its opening at Dexter Daze, Bishop said.

The exchange students are also involved with the organization PeaceJam., a program that introduces them to Nobel Peace subjects and winners. As part of requirements for both organizations, theyre required to investigate and act upon a social or political problem, said Clinthorne, who over the years has hosted six exchange students. The AFS students chose to become involved in Camp Take Notice, a tent city for

Saint Joseph Parish will host its fourth annual Lenten Mission March 18-20 at its Country Campus, 6805 Mast Road. The theme of this years mission is We Believe ... I Believe ... Why Believe? Promesso presented by Rev. William J. Promesso, pastor of St. Cyprian Parish in Riverview. The purpose of the three-day mission is to help believers be renewed and refreshed in their relationship with God as well as to examine how Christians beliefs deepen their relationship with God and with one

another, according to Marinell High, St. Josephs director of religious education. We are all responsible for one another, High said. This mission is about social justice. According to High, Pastor Promesso will discuss three phrases, one each night, and explore how each impacts Christians and their relationships with God. The three phrases he (Promesso) will discuss are begotten of, consubstantial and Incarnate of, High said. He said begotten of is translated as Jesus is, consubstantial is the relationship among the father, son and holy spirit and incarnate of, meaning God made flesh. Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter which is one of the highest holidays in Christian religions. Christians typically prepare for Easter by observ-

ing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline, all of which allow time for reflection on Jesus Christs suffering, sacrifice, death and resurrection. According to High, the church hosts a different speaker or presenter each year for the mission. High said the focuses of the missions vary from year to year as well. Sometimes, according to High, the presenters have their messages prepared whereas this years message was more of a collaborative effort among High, Promesso and Father Brendan of St. Joseph Parish. This is a custom-made mission, High said. High said it is tradition for parishes involved in the mission to swap pastors the week preceding a mission. So, Pastor Promesso will say all the masses at St. Joseph and Father Brendan will travel to St. Cyprian in

Riverview, High said. The purpose of the swap, according to High, is to not only give churchgoers the opportunity to hear from the presenter before the mission but also to promote the event. Our goal is to feed our parishioners and everyone who attends, High said. This is going to be like a really good sermon. High said there will be opportunities for questions and spiritual exploration as well. The Lenten Mission at St. Joseph is open to everyone and will be 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 18 and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 19-20. The mission is free though there will be a good-will offering. Child care will be available and provided by St. Josephs trained volunteers. High asked that anyone interested in child care should preregister by calling the church office at 734-426-8483.
