Correction on
Sandhill rates
The rates for Kohlers new
Sandhill luxury private cabin,
which was introduced in the
March 1 issue of The Kohler Vil-
lager, is $785 per night for up to
four people weekdays. The cabin
is located on a wooded 350 acres

out the barrel for brew
specialists and enthusiasts
New events and new weekend tickets on sale March 1
for the fourth annual frothy festival in Kohler

Top brewmasters will treat beer
enthusiasts to a weekend of brew-
centric events at the fourth annual
Kohler Festival of Beer, June 1-3,
co-sponsored by Midwest Living
Magazine. This year, thousands of
beer mugs will be raised during
new and signature beer-themed
demonstrations, tastings, dining
experiences and celebrations. Due
to popular demand, a new ticket
option for beer fanatics is the ulti-
mate all-weekend pass. This pass,
as well as individual tickets and
day-passes, are available March 1,
at www.AmericanClub.com/beer-
festival or by calling 800-344-
2838.
The resort celebrates two new
events to this years well-crafted
event line-up. At the Beer Summit,
top brewers will share how they
took their passions of brewing and
grew them into successful busi-
nesses. Guests will learn the His-
tory of Barrel Making during an
educational and entertaining sem-
inar hosted by Frank J. Hess and
Sons Cooperage originally of
Madison, Wis. Tickets for these
new educational sessions are avail-
able starting at $25.00 per person.
In addition to the fan-favorites
and the variety of tastings the beer
festival offers, we are excited to
add these educational sessions,
said Teo Zagroba, beverage man-
ager for The American Club Re-
sort. Fans will not only get to
taste great brews, they will also
have more opportunities to learn
from master brewers, share expe-
riences, insight and tips.

Friday, June 1
The celebration will commence
with a ceremonial tapping of the
first kegs at the Tapping Party
($30) Unreleased and limited
quantity Wisconsin and American
beers will be tapped for tasting
while beer lovers enjoy live music
and food pairings.
Speak directly with top brewers
at the new Beer Summit ($48),
taste selections for their breweries
and learn how they turned their
passions into booming businesses.
The evening continues at Rhythm
& Brews ($48) a tasting event fea-
turing an array of microbrews ac-
companied by lively music, food
samplings, good people and a great
time.
The After-Hours Tap Delight (a
la carte pricing) will end the night
with featured tap beers paired with
unique appetizers at The Horse &
Plow, The American Clubs origi-
nal pub.
Saturday, June 2
In addition to the new History
of Barrel Making ($25) session, a
full day of beer-focused festivity is
planned for Saturday.
The day begins with Eggs &
Kegs ($25) where breakfast-goers
will enjoy traditional morning fa-
vorites infused with and paired
with beer.
Golf fans can compete in the
Blackwolf Run Beer Challenge
Golf Tournament & Million Dollar
Shootout ($150) with specialty
beer samples on select holes and
prize-winning opportunities.
A mid-day Beer Luncheon
($55) at The Wisconsin Room
restaurant will feature a chef-se-
lected menu paired with Wisconsin
beers.
The day continues with Beers
Around the World ($40) tasting
event offering a sampling of beers
from more than 20 countries. This
year the Jigger Ale will again be
celebrated at this signature event
as the official beer of the Kohler-
owned Old Course Hotel in St. An-
drews, Scotland. The Jigger Ale is
exclusively available at The Jigger
Inn located in St. Andrews and at
The American Club Resort.
The last glasses of the evening will
be raised at Cheers to Beers ($65)
as beer-fanatics will taste an exten-
sive variety of beers and vote for
their favorite while enjoying cui-
sine from The Kitchens of Kohler.
The winning brew will be featured
on-tap throughout the summer at
the Horse & Plow pub and grill at
The American Club.
Sunday, June 3
Eggs & Kegs ($26) kicks off
the festivities on Sunday along
with a new event titled Sour Beer
Blending ($30) an educational
demonstration focused on the art
of making spontaneously ferment-
ing beers.
The Kohler Festival of Beer
concludes with a fest-favorite
Shorts and Chefs ($45) where top
local and regional chefs clad in
shorts celebrate the summer by
grilling mouth-watering dishes
paired with delicious beers.
Throughout the entire Kohler
Festival of Beer weekend, guests
can sip various beers at the out-
door Horse & Plow Beer Garden,
located at the Baker Plaza at the
Shops at Woodlake Kohler. Most
of the Kohler Festival of Beer spe-
cial events will take place at the
Kohler Festival of Beer Main
Stage sponsored by GreatBrew-
ers.com.

Students close

nature teaches
sustainability
Eagle River, WI Chaperoned by
their teachers, fifth grade students
from Kohler Elementary traveled
northward to Trees For Tomorrow
Natural Resources Specialty
School. During their three-day
workshop, February 20-22, they
studied various aspects of the
Great Lakes ecosystem. With a
focus upon sustainability, resource
awareness and outdoor recreation,
students trekked wilderness areas
and examined managed forests.
Taking in the environment on
snowshoes, they had the opportu-
nity to observe a live porcupine
den. Children possessing patience
and a calm presence were re-
warded with a live visit by chick-
adees on their outstretched hands.
Paper making, outdoor survival
techniques and a lecture about
skulls, skins and bones rounded
out their curriculum. Kohler Ele-
mentary students received scholar-
ship support for their workshop
from Ms. Amanda Brotz.
Brotz, an alumna of Trees For
Tomorrow who attended as a jun-
ior high school student of Kohler,
remembered her experience and
wanted to share it with others.
Trees For Tomorrow had such a
positive impact on me... I specifi-
cally remember the point when a
light bulb went on in my head and
I realized that I could actually pur-
sue some sort of natural science as
a career... I think it is so important
to simply bring environmental
awareness to kids, so as they grow
up, that awareness is factored into
decisions they make that can posi-
tively affect our environment and
community as a whole. Today,
Brotz is a professional in environ-
mental compliance coordination at
a Wisconsin company.
A Wisconsin education tradi-
tion, Trees For Tomorrow encour-
ages students to spend time out-
doors and gain an appreciation for
nature, which can influence them
for life. One student stated, I
learned how to feed a chickadee
and it landed on my hand. We were
very lucky kids to experience this
in our lifetime. I had so much fun
learning about so many things like
wolves, bears, and about other an-
imals too.
This fully accredited program
educates participants about the nat-
ural environment and the sustain-
able resources humans rely on.
Classroom time combined with ad-
ventures in the outdoors keep the
students engaged while in an at-
mosphere that encourages critical
thinking, team building, increasing
self esteem, learning new skills,
and enjoying the outdoors.

The 2012 Kohler Police Ath-
letic League (KPAL) Brat Fry held
at the Kohler Fire House in Febru-
ary, welcomed sunny skies and un-
seasonably mild temperatures in
contrast to last years event which
was held during a winter storm
that dropped 10 inches of snow.
The Brat Fry was well attended
throughout the entire day, with the
fire house filled to an estimated
90% of its capacity between avail-
able seating for 200 and standing
room. Just under 8,000 advanced
tickets were sold, with 80% of
them redeemed at the even for
food and beverage. Busy volun-
teers served up 1,920 brats, ham-
burgers or chicken sandwiches
during the day along with 200
pounds of German potato salad,
150 pounds of baked beans, 25
cases of soda and water, nine half-
barrels of beer, and lots of desserts.
For the fourth year in a row, the
KPAL Brat Fry exceeded the pre-
vious years profits helping to off-
set lost funding that resulted from
discontinuing their monthly Sun-
day night BINGO
KPAL would like to thank the
Romanoski families auto dealer-
ship in helping to bring in their
friend and spokesperson Mason
Crosby of the Green Bay Packers
for pictures and autographs. He re-
ceived a very warm welcome and
was given a rousing standing ova-
tion when he left.
KPALwould also like to thank
the following: The energetic
golden voice of Jeff Dickert, who
keeps the crowd enthusiastic and
willing to stay and socialize;
KPALmember spouses and chil-
dren who helped sell raffle tickets,
serve food and beverages, baked
goods, and assisted in other ways;

the Kohler Boy Scouts and Cub
Scouts who helped the day of the
fry with cleanup detail and raffles;
Special thanks to the youth foot-
ball team participants (players,
coaches, parents) who on the
weekend before the fry canvased
the village selling over 800 re-
maining advance tickets (both the
scouts and players show their ap-
preciation for the support they re-
ceive from KPAL by providing
these valuable services for us in re-
turn); to KPAL sponsors including
the major sponsor Kohler Co. and
Hospitality group for printing the
tickets and offering up gift certifi-
cates constituting our grand prize
($250) and 10 other prizes of $25;
to the many other friends who con-
tributed door prizes totaling over
$2800. More than 130 prizes in
total were awarded. Profits from
the brat fry alone contribute to the
$10,000 that is that is awarded to
youth programs in Kohler by
KPAL each year
KPAL continually seeks new
members to join in their efforts to
support the youth in the Village.
They are a very social organization
with an important mission. Meet-
ings are held on the second
Wednesday of every month. Resi-
dents are encouraged to join and
help the organization support the
youth of Kohler.

Senate Bill 2 was passed and
signed by the Governor, which ex-
tends the open enrollment applica-
tion period from three weeks to
three months. The Open Enroll-
ment application period in Wiscon-
sin now runs from February 6
April 30, 2012. (It was previously
February 6 24, 2012). Open En-
rollment allows children to attend
school districts other than the dis-
trict in which they live. Parents
who would like to apply for the
2012-13 Open Enrollment must
apply no later than 4:00 pm on Fri-
day, April 30, 2012. Additional in-
formation is available at any public
school main office or on-line at the
Wisconsin Department of Public

The 5th grade Kohler Bombers
girls basketball team won the Ply-
mouth Hoops Basketball Tourna-
ment on March 3. The Bombers
went 4-0 on the day, beating Ply-
mouth, Reedsville, Ripon and
Fond du Lac to win the tourna-
ment.

Bombers Basketball Team took
2nd out of a field of 10 teams at the
Ozaukee Shoot Out on February
4th. The Bombers had wins over
Slinger, Grafton Select and
Mequon-Thiensville before falling
to Manitowoc in the finals. The
team is coached by Mike Kelm and
Rick Ertel.

Karting Club swap
meet scheduled
Saturday, March 10
The Road America Kart Club
(RAKC) will host its annual swap
meet on Saturday, March 10th at
Racers Hall in Plymouth, Wiscon-
sin. The event is open to the public
at 11:00 AM. The show runs until
3 p.m. Admission is free.
This is a great opportunity for
race teams to buy and sell new or
used equipment for the upcoming
race season. People new to the
sport can meet with suppliers to
discuss various aspects of kart rac-
ing. Club officials will hold an in-
formational meeting at 1 p.m. At
this time questions will be taken.
Rule changes and other topics of
interest will also be covered.
Vendor booths are just $10 and
sellers can start setting up at 10
a.m. on the day of the show. No ad-
vanced registration is required.

east of the Hwy 57/Fleet Farm in-

Thirteen members of the She-
boygan Lakers Figure Skating
Club competed at the 2012 Badger
State Games held in Mosinee, WI,
February 3-5, bringing home 22
medals, including gold medals for
their theater on Ice program Toy
Story. The program was coached
and choreographed by club presi-
dent Alexis Scott. Gold medal win-
ners were Kohler residents Larissa
Paseta and Katie Lindow along
with Gemma Sutkiewicz, Giu-
lianna Sutkiewicz, Kassandra
Scott, Elizabeth Weidner, Sydney

with Centennial
Its been a long time since the
Kohler High School reunions at the
old Rec Hall or at the Falls Munic-
ipal Building! In conjunction with
the Kohler Village Centennial fes-
tivities in August, a Kohler High
School reunion is being planned.
After the Village picnic at Lost
Woods Park winds down, Kohler
High grads will take over the park
for camaraderie and reminiscence
about the days at Kohler High.
Tentatively planned from 6 p.m. to
11 p.m., spouses or significant oth-
ers are also welcome.
Anyone willing to help with re-

The Sheboygan Mercury, a weekly local newspaper, was first published on February 19,
1848 in the village of Sheboygan, Wisconsin Territory. In a relatively short time, many
daily and weekly newspapers followed. Several were printed in German and Dutch.
They covered the local news, agriculture, temperance, politics, national and international
news. For well over a century, local newspapers have been the primary window to our
communities and the world. Join us as we celebrate our local newspapers and the news-
paper history of Sheboygan County.
Third Saturdays are a great way to meet history experts, local history buffs, and
learn about our local history through displays, presentations, demonstrations, local
history handouts, historic videos and hands-on activities. Series programs are held
the third Saturday of the month, January through October at the Museum.

Future Problem
Solving State Bowl
The Wisconsin Future Problem
Solving Program will hold its 30th
annual State Bowl in Wisconsin
Dells from April 19-21, 2012.
Over 300 fourth through twelfth
graders from around the state will
participate in the Global Issues
Problem Solving competition at
the State Bowl. Working in teams
of four or as individuals, students
will analyze the challenges and de-
velop solution ideas for a situation
set in a fictional future and related
to the global topic of Trade Barri-
ers. Three teams from Kohler who
qualified and will attend the State-
Bowl are Team One: Kendall
Wolf, Michael Krueger, and An-
drew Grose; Team Two: Charles
Olmsted, Sydney Yang, Grace
Lofgren, and Kelsey Wright; and
Team Three: Kitty ONeill, Sam
Dedek, Madeline Kelly, and Con-
nor Hogan. Katelyn Van Treeck
will compete individually.
Global Issues Problem Solving,
a component of the Future Prob-
lem Solving Program Interna-
tional, is a year-long educational
program in which students learn a
six-step problem solving process
and apply it to future situations in
three practice topics they have re-
searched. The practice topics this
year were All In a Days Work,
Coral Reefs, and Human Rights.
The goals of the program are to
encourage students to become
more creative in their thinking, to
develop richer images of the fu-
ture, to increase their research
skills, to learn cooperative team-
work skills, and to increase their
written and verbal communication
skills.
At the State Bowl, Global Is-
sues Problem Solvers will brain-
storm 16 challenges, an
underlying problem, and 16 solu-
tions for a future situation related
to the topic of Trade Barriers.
They will also develop criteria to
use in selecting the best solution,
and write an action plan for imple-
menting it. This written team ef-
fort is completed in a two-hour
time frame. In addition, students
will plan and present four-minute
presentations to introduce their
best solution action plan to an au-

America (JA), the national trade
association for businesses serving
the fine jewelry retail marketplace,
has awarded Karin Burg, of She-
boygan Falls-based Corner Studio
Jewelers, a first-place award in the
2012 CASE Awards, the associa-
tions annual jewelry design com-
petition. Burg competed among
more than 25 jewelers in the com-
petition. The CASE Awards recog-
nize the creativity, artistry, style
and excellence in jewelry design
from top jewelers across the na-
tion. It was held at the JA New
York trade show, January 22-24,
2012, in New York City.
Jewelers of America is hon-
ored to recognize the exceptional
talents of jewelers, like Karin
Burg, whose design demonstrates
the remarkable jewelry available
from JA-member stores nation-
wide, says JA COO Robert
Headley.
Burg won the first-place CASE
Award in the Alternative Materials
Jewelry category for a modern
ring made from Argentium silver
and steel with three diamond
melee. The ring also won first
place in the 2011 Wisconsin Jew-
elers Association Design Compe-
tition.

southbound I-43 will be com-
pletely detoured onto the adjacent
access ramps at WIS 32 during the
evening next week. This is being
done so that the current bridge
crossing I-43 can be removed.
Motorists should be aware traffic
impacts could be significant.
WIS 32 over I-43 is closing
starting Monday, March 12 at 7
a.m. and will remain closed until
mid-May. Also starting Monday,
there will be various lane closures
on northbound and southbound I-
43 between Smies Road and Ams-
terdam Road in the town of
Holland.
Tuesday, March13 from 8 p.m.
to 5 a.m. Wednesday, March 14
northbound and southbound I-43 at
WIS 32 will be detoured up the
off-ramps and continue down the
on-ramps. During this time, no ac-
cess to the ramps will be permitted
from the east or the west.
Wednesday, March 14 from 8
p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, March 15
- northbound and southbound I-43
at WIS 32 will be detoured up the

p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, March 16 -
northbound and southbound I-43 at
WIS 32 will be detoured up the
County O and County J under I-
43 in the town of Sheboygan re-
main closed. The WIS 42
southbound on-ramp to I-43 and
the I-43 southbound off-ramp to
WIS 23 also remain closed. The
ramps are scheduled to reopen by
Memorial Day and County O and
J by the 4th of July.
This work is part of a $14.5 mil-
lion project that began in Septem-
ber 2010 and be will finished by
August of this year. The project
totals 24 miles and includes as-
phalt paving, 8 new bridges, 3
bridge overlays, 2 deck replace-
ments, beam guard, concrete base
patching, ramp closure gates, law
enforcement pads, and pavement
marking.

Spa responds to
community call
In the spirit of stewardship, the
Kohler Waters Spa staff donated
nearly 200 blankets, towels and
robes, and even a microwave, to
the counseling center at Sheboy-
gan South High School. The team
responded within 24 hours to a
call from school volunteer Martha
Safford, who is collecting essen-
tial items for a food and cloth-
ing/supply pantry to support
students of families in financial
strife.
